  • This is a walk round of an O gauge model railway that we are currently working on within the Cheshire area. It is a DCC layout, which we have the pleasure of helping the new owner maintain, in addition to hopefully developing and extending in the future.
The layout has come with a number of locomotives and rolling stock, which are in a variety of running states that we plan to address in future videos

How lucky are you guys!?! Now straight to ideas for future vids. Ah, where do you start? Maybe the viewers would enjoy a slowish, continuous, panning shot around the entire layout.
The option of a mini cam, could be good for some driver point of view and rear cam views of the entire circuit.
The fiming is great quality of the first vid, btw.
Rail enthusiasts like locomotives, so, maybe a vid about the engine shed and the loco's giving the entire list on a pause screen might be nice.
A vid concentrating on the trackside buildings, which look pretty much perfect, would be great too, maybe seperate vids for domestic buildings, railway, industrial with multiple view angles and the buildings surroundings, even a top view from above too.
Operational vids, plenty of variety of rolling stock, don't keep filming the same train! There looks like plenty to play with.
Research old photographs from 1950/60s to copy the look of frieght trains when selecting wagons and vans, goods trains are in some ways more interesting to watch.
Do a shunters special showing off the variety of smaller loco's at the goods yard/coaling stage and then a mainline express special lining up all the finest carriages, in correct order[!) to show off the greatest achievements of the steam era. Diesels too! There's a side vid idea, modern vs old. which is preferred?
Scenery vids can become difficult to compose and a stream of photo-shots for the viewer to pause, 5 seconds per view, might be good, could be a regular feature of the series?
If you want to go deep, with a lot of vids, take a look at a comprehensive model railway retailer website and take themes for your vids from their list.
Some viewers would enjoy a 15 min vid on just the signals, their reason for being in situ, the operational side and their construction along with 'beneath the board' details.
Perhaps the setting of a scenario might be entertaining, get creative with the mini-world at your cameras end! All the best.

Beautiful to see such a large and finely detailed layout in O gauge, wow a real masterpiece. It sure will be a steep learning curve and with your stated approach and respect you have shown am sure you will do the owner proud. Look forward to following your progress. It was great to see this layout as it is now, as I'd not seen it since my last visit quite a few years ago. This layout was initially built as a commission by the well known railway modeller Norman Solomon and over a number of years I occasionally helped him to deliver and erect the baseboards that he had initially made at his workshop in Somerset. Virtually all the trackwork was hand built by Norman and connecting it all up to the various control panels was a mammoth task. Norman has recently emigrated to Australia. If you wish to see more about the layout, particularly details about it's early construction, check out the book "John Ryan's Express". As a matter of interest the oldest part of the layout is the stone bridge over the river that was built by Norman as a diorama for the previous owner long before any locos ran. It got incorporated into the large layout at a very early stage. How great oaks from little acorns grow!!

What’s magnificent layout - thank you for sharing it with us. I was already full of admiration and then it was casually mentioned that it is ‘O’ gauge! The locomotives and the carriages, all Golden-age Models and the like. I am simply a proud owner of a Bassett-Lowke built original Merchant Navy, a large Prairie and one Golden-age Pullman car, all in O gauge but with nowhere to run them! Seeing this layout let me step into my dreams. Time, space and money - the three vital ingredients of model railway construction brought to life.

Railways run from end to end via sections along the route , not round & round in circles or ovals , however in miniature given space & modeling requirements we have little choice but to loop things sometimes , this is a fantastic model railway layout & great to see young guys getting involved in the hobby .
And yes I’d mention it’s value then perhaps people would view with their eyes not their hands which essentially damages things . Every layout made is respective to its owners so if things are not quite right who cares get a life , I grew up on the LD&ECR railway where nothing was ever quite right .
Nice video guys we’ll done will certainly be coming to look at it sometime , please everyone continue only positively with our glorious hobby.

Hi, I remember this layout being built many years back by a very professional team of experienced quality model makers, it appeared in many model railway magazines at the time. From your video and the comments has this layout been relocated to a new home? This really is one of the very best layouts in this scale, in fact any scale, you will ever see. You have taken on a monumental task, just to maintain this layout as it currently stands, I wish you every success, but please respect the layout and the quality of what is already there. I mean no disrespect, but if you wish your videos to appeal to model railways enthusiasts, you really need to get you terminology correct. You called it a "Point Box" it is a "Signal Box" . "Train Set", never, it's a "Railway" and the blue engine you wish to repaint because it looks tatty, is weathered as it would have appeared in real life. I wish you every success with this railway adventure, and I really do hope you do it justice. I look forward to seeing how things progress. All the very best of luck, Dave.

The modelling looks like kit bash or bespoke. Wagons and carriages all have types and variants. You need to know them. 600,000 pound train room sounds like you won the lottery and bought it all. Good Luck

I used to work on that layout, with two other guys, for many years until I moved from the area 4 years ago. I was surprised when JR told me he was leaving the layout with the stock. it took him many years to put it together with a lot of work by him and some first class modellers. Because of the size and complexity of the layout it does take a bit of regular maintenance. Have you got a copy of the book which details a lot of the history? My favourite view is the bridge over the shallow river on the two line section. It was one of the first sections to be built and has stood the test of time. Good luck and enjoy one of the very best layouts in the country.

Welcome to the club 😊
In terms of suggestions, personally I'd just like to see more about what you both find out as you learn about this layout and the hobby in general - it's interesting to see it from the perspective of people who haven't been immersed in the hobby for years. I'd also love to learn nore about you both, which aspects and parts of the layout most capture your imagination, and how you ended up working on this collection - a challenging but fun project for sure! Do you think it will ever make you want to build your own layouts? Anyway, enjoy and I'm looking forward to future updates!
PS I can easily believe it's a £600k layout and collection; some of those O Gauge locomotives are crazy expensive on their own, never mind all the coaches, wagons and scenery! But in terms of the work that went into putting it all together; priceless!

Hi, as a modeller in 0 gauge and enthusiast myself I hope you dont mind me commenting! I am impressed in the railway you are working on and on your enthusiasm for it. Its certainly quite a work of art. I think with a model railway it its purpose is one of a few reasons and guess a decision needs to be made….The usual purposes are 1)A time machine to show something that was but is not now as accurate as possible 2) A nostalgia trip for the operators 3) A complex operation requiring skill and knowledge to operate successfully 4) A showcase for models. 5) an outlet for skill and technique. There are probably other reasons but maybe the owner has a view on what he/she wants it to be. I will not give an opinion on which of the above I think this model is best suited to of the above reasons. I will say, however, to operate it to its full extent it probably needs several (possibly 5?) operators to operate it to its full extent from what we have seen so far. So when extended, as you hinted at, it will probably need more. Its a bit daunting where to start with a railway of this size and complexity but my recommendation would be to go on a course on DCC control as that is fundamental to this model and without a good understanding of its possibilities it will not live up to expectations. Most layouts with DCC operation do not live up to the potential of DCC in my opinion so maybe that could be an early goal……just a thought.

Thank you for stepping up to be custodians of this histroically important and wonderful layout.
Even more importantly you have recognised you are on a steep learning curve, and you need help, and you are reaching out to other modellers who I am sure would love to help. A layout of this size in O gauge will be a dream of many, but few will ever be able to realise.
This hobby suffers from far too many rivet counters and armchair critics who always know best, the terminology will get better with experience, and I would suggest that the more droll commenters might want to offer their hands on help if they are geographically nearby to help with the ongoing maintnenance and restoration of the layout. Rather than criticising from their keyboard !
I would also see if Ellis Clark Trains will lend you one of their O gauge Black 5's it would look fantasic on that coal train the 9F was pulling.
Have subscribed and look forward to following your adventure forward😀, also check out Chadwick Model Railway, a fantasticlly helpful u tube channel, Charlie is an awsome resource..

Welcome to the hobby! This might be one of the most impressive layouts I've ever seen. The level of detail is superb. It's great to see more younger people coming into the model railway scene now too. Count me in as a new subscriber and I really look forward to seeing what content you guys come up with.
For me, I'm always interested to see modelling techniques, especially weathering. I think some model reviews would be great as well, in terms of detail, price, performance. As your both new to the scene, this could be something you get the owner to support you with too? All in all, everyday is a schoolday on model railways and you never stop learning. I'm 27 so don't have as much experience as most in the hobby, but you'll find the majority of modellers are supportive and very much encourage a younger crowd gets involved.

Well done on acquiring this fantastically realistic model railway. (It’s more than just a train set) do look up and explore why elements of the modelling that appear to be neglected, they are most likely made that way to show and recreate reality of the era of steam trains. Steam Locomotives by nature are not all bright and clean. Do visit a working Heritage railway which will surely give you an insight into how it was and as you have already immersed yourselves into this hobby this visit should serve to inspire your creative talents to continue with what already is a magnificent piece of art not just modelling. Good luck and who knows one day you could open your doors to the public to view this incredible Railway.

There is still quite a few sections of the layout that need attention. Not sure if it's not been used for a long time or maybe it's deteriorated over time but alot of the rail connections are faulty leading to dead sections of track. Also quite a few shorts in places especially the section in leading into castle cross station. Tash used "tinkering" which for sure is the wrong word when what she meant was maintain/restore.

@@CheshireRailCraft Short circuits through the station throat are almost always caused by incorrect route setting. I suggest that you do not start trying to find short circuits in the station throat. Number 1 it's incredibly complex and number 2 it's very very likely the route selection is wrong especially the exit to the clockwise route. Speak to JR before you start in this area.
The problems of open circuits are a routine part of running this layout. Start by assuming that YOU'VE done something wrong. This is not a slur on you but I assure you that after many years this has often been the case. Next look at the point motors. They are tortoise motors and aren't the best available, however they were chosen for good reason. After that look for the isolations and get out your meter. Soldered dry joints are a bit of an issue so look out for them.
Speak to the owner; you be well advised to ask the two guys from Alsager to give you some training on the layout if they will. Good luck and enjoy.

Finally, 17:53, _this_ live steam must be the layout's raîson d'être. Getting a good run of chuffs on those straight sections must be an absolute joy.

Likely that it is just the huge progress made with new design smoke units.

Nice layout there. Here is a couple of video tips. Start off with some random lineside running shots to make about a 3-8 minute video. Also do 30-60 second shorts videos to grow the audience but most importantly be kind and gentle with yourselves and have buckets of fun. If you have any O Gauge Class 60 Diesel Locomotives on the layout. I would love to see one running in the future. Doesn't matter what colour it is mate. Although you introduced us, the viewers, to the layout, you never (unless I was too busy watching in awe at the railway), mentioned what your capacity is with this layout. Did you inherit it?
