- I got a 2 stroke V8 that runs... and it is AWESOME!!!
I got this second V8 off marketplace that has all new ignition modules and now we can use it to better understand these very different engines.

outboards that big have tapped holes in the flywheel for temporary installation of a lifting ring. at 4:39 you're holding a fuel pump, it runs off of crankcase pressure differentials or pulses via that "vacuum" hose at 5:35 that goes into the side of the engine and the screw in the middle of the circle holds the diaphragm in. that module at 5:06 with the little red handle is a primer, it does the job of a choke for cold starts and when wired to an omc key switch, you push the key in for choke. that engine would've had vro variable ratio oiling and the first generation of vro sucked so it was commonlydeleted as it appears to have been on your motor.
@@mostlymotorizedyep it is. My father has 2 of these engines, but in V6 configuration. A beast of an engine, drinks fuel like a thirsty salt desert, and they have a fucked up loud af bangs and pops rev limiter that bangs on those pistons and it's crazy how it actually sounds at high revs. My father was testing it running out of the water and he accidentally gave it 1/4 throttle. The hole house was shaking because the Garage is right underneath 😂😂 they both still run, wiring goes bad... Pipes and tubes go bad, thermostats went bad and overheated like a fucker, nothing changed not even compression lol. Block's are really well made. Keep the eletrics and tubes in good shape, premix your fuel to 1% (somehow that's what they need, with so much fuel going in they only need 1% of oil in the fuel) and you're set. My father's have 150hp jiglers both of them. The V4 config with 120hp is sad and boring to work and run after you messed around the V6 😂😂

At 5:00 those are fuel pumps and work off crankcase pulses (2 strokes use the back side of the piston/crankcase to help draw in air/fuel and use the tapped off pressure oscillation to drive the diaphragm in the fuel pump). The other bit with the red lever on it is the fuel primer, which injects raw fuel into the inlet manifold behind the carbs when cold starting, it can operate normally by pushing the key in when cranking or the red lever can be used to manually actuate - when using a rope to start - good luck with that :)
i got a 4l johnson small block and its got oil line everwhere on bottom end. runs about 30 to 45 psi oil pressure on XD-100 from vro pumps.
I would absolutely love to have that engine. Put it in my little 91 ranger..

Congratulations 🎉 🎶You have to ground out the coils to remove ignition. Those are oil lines to the block for bearings.
yep i got one of these johnson side oilier small block 4l v8 fpr parts im working on. VRO pumps provide oil pressure to all this.

And one more thing the bolt that holds the flywheel on is threaded so you can put a piece of pipe with a welded Loop so you can hoist it

They make an eye hook that screws into your cranshaft to lift from. At least Mercury does. My neighboer had one on a 21 foot tunnel hull boat. It moved out pretty good over 100 mph. I jave a 97 2.5 Drag Merc. I used to build Tunnel hulls in the 80's through the 2000's.

The lifting eye is screwed into flywheel as mentioned earlier. Those vacuum hoses your talking about going into engine are oil scavenging hoses that pull two stroke oil out that has pooled up in crankcase and reintroduces back into engine to be burned again I believe. It's been a while... When the engine is running the exhaust cover in between cylinder heads should never be so hot you can't touch it or the engine is overheating
The plugged off hoses were for oil injection. Common failure, it was bypassed and they ran premix instead.
You got to make sure that things got some good oil in it as well as hook a hose up to it at least for coolant
i hit my finger with a sledge hammer getting a 1 ton truck axle under the car, but that 2 cycle has a very exotic tone to it
Thats amazing the ign system was good. Thats why they end up in the scap yard most of the time that and the carbs.

Those jumper cables are probably alot of the slow spinning over problems go to a salvage yard and find you a couple long battery cables to rig up for doing stuff like that
Hey buddy, when I lived in Nokomis and did a lot of boating related stuff, I had a nut with a hanger welded on it that screwed onto the Crank , remove the Nut holding g the flywheel and crew on you new tool, you can thank me Later!

5:26 Thats the Choke system. For cold starting. You push in on the key to activate the choke
If you want to revive some of the batteries that you have, top them off with distilled water, and then get you a next peak 10 amp battery charger reconditioner . It's a little red and black rectangular brick looking thing with a digital display that I've been using for the past couple of months and I've probably brought at least six batteries back to life to the point where I've been able to put them in cars and use them regularly.

Just have a jumper wire on your coils, and ground them out to shut it off
Man i lmao when you showed your finger, said you shouldnt have because people would be calling you a pu$$y then said grabbing it there could have been dangerous😂😂. My first thought when you grab ed it was the flywheel tooth grabbing your finger and running it thru the starter housing, glad it didnt but damn it would have been a hellova story to go with the swap when finished lol. Try get an evinrude E-TEC, those are DFI so you could use the stock fuel system as well.
Can you put these horizontal or are they forever vitrtical. would be much more useful if it could run sideways

Hey to kill the engine, there should be a black wire with a yellow stripe going to the CDI module. Ground that out and it kills spark!

wouldnt have run that long and hard with ether. still had fuel in it.
most all starter fluids have upper cylinder lubricant in them
Watch zip ties and biasplys that guys tries hard every day to blow engines with ether never happens

Please use lube and figure out your coolant situation. These motors are very temperamental and break very very easily 16:25

Thats a good way to burn a piston. When you run a two stroke out of fuel you not only starve the bearings of oil for a few seconds before it shuts down, you also are running it very lean too ! You may get away with it several times, but your rolling the dice each time.

Dude, like a run away diesel, just cover the intake, have a piece of board on the ready.
This motor likely has an oil injection for the bearings, in which case premix on its own doesnt work.
Google is your friend here ... research every thing you need to know before changeing anything/everything lol

NO....leave that fuel system alone, sort out the wires, INSTALL or fab a air cleaner ...
That home fab intake seems a bit sketch to me in that, the factory KNOWS tuning lengths for performance.

Dude. This is so painful to watch. There is so much information out there. Just bumbling along "this thing" and "that thing" is so silly. I almosy shit when i saw "it runs". A new one for you to destroy...that makes alot more sense. And just get a mechanical non microprocessor controlled 200amp battery charger. Speedway series is decent and will do the job.
