  • Thank you to everyone who has stuck around for this 2 stroke project. This is NOT a wrap on the project yet, but just like you I am human and with that comes trial and error. This project has been a lot of fun and I have enjoyed it, however I am out of space and swamped in projects in my shop!! I will be taking time through the holidays to clean up the shop, get some projects done, and get back to making good content for you guys lol. I am a one man show and without the positive support and help from my subs I wouldn't be where I am now. Happy Holidays!

    Id love to see 8, 2 stroke dirt bike carbs. On each hole.

      @benfreeman4707 7 месяцев назад

      snowmobile carbs or throttle bodies with injectors come in bigger sizes than dirt bike carbs. I looked into it thinking they would be a cheap source for feeding a small block Ford or Chevy they need to be very large most common cheap large size mikunis are 40-42mm which is enough to feed 600hp. Ive read these V8 two strokes were easily making 6-800hp reliably in endurance offshore racing applications.

    • @astrawally8448
      @astrawally8448 7 месяцев назад

      @@benfreeman4707you can't just add bigger carbs to a 2 stroke - the inlet pulsing/oscillation can cause massive issues with fuel metering (the same air can past through the nozzle 3 times). Mikuni, Keihin or Dellorto carbs are great on a two-stroke but they don't have accel pumps so you'll likely have nasty flat spots and backfiring in your small block 4 stroke. To make big horsepower in these OMC engines you need 8 exhaust pipes with specifically tuned expansion chambers, a lot of porting work and only then bigger carbs.

    • @benfreeman4707
      @benfreeman4707 7 месяцев назад

      @@astrawally8448I wouldn't use two stroke sled carbs on a four stroke V8 engine, I would use sled throttle bodies. They're large enough to not be a restriction vs. say cbr 1000 throttle bodies, way to small.. Itb's are not very practical anyway, have yet to see a sanitary air cleaner setup besides screens and what's the point of itb's if you can't see them under an air box? 😆 a custom throttle linkage with eight cables, plumbing the fuel system, etc.
      Back on the 2 stroke V8- I think used snowmobile pipes and carbs would be the cheapest way to get 8!! Pipes and wow, that's crazy to even think about isn't it? 8 pipes lol.. so it's 3.6 liters or 450cc per cylinder if you could get it to flow close to a 900cc sled that's 70-80hp per cylinder x 8 560-640hp! Assuming there's some design constraints with the outboard 450-500 is probably a more realistic goal and you are correct about carb sizing can't just go from say a 32mm to a 36mm without needing the extra flow from larger bore, larger reeds opening up intake ports, increase compression, exhaust etc. Drag race engines successfully use much larger custom carbs though like 52mm. Back on topic though. He's going to have enough issues just getting it installed into something and I would ditch the edelbrock carb and intake run carbs sized slightly larger than what came from the factory.

      I do have a fun project I am working on my self I have a 97 stepside f150 I pulled a 4.6 out of and am replacing it with a 5.4l dohc that I took out of a 02 navigator intech engine the thing is a monster I love the way it looks I've watch some videos on it and not everything told about the installation was accurate as I thought they'd be I had to lift the body 2" to make it work and 8" to install a few head bolts and valve cover I port and polished the heads and am welding a 3" dual exhaust on the truck at this time I am using the stock trans eventually need to up grade the input and output shafts to harden shafts or remove stronger ones out of another donor trans. Due to the torque that will be produced will be around nearly 800+ft.lbs. of torque. I see most all videos talking about change the torque converter or rework the computer to lower the torque not one man spoke on keeping the torque. Why would anyone want to get rid of the torque when you want all the torque you can get it's a truck man. Me I'm keeping all the torque I can get and will make the necessary changes to keep all that torque I figure with all the mods I made the engine should be around 360hp and 400ft lbs torque to get all the free toque from the trans I'll keep and have a beast of a truck eventually I'll get the axles and suspension out of a f250 or f350 and have one heck of a mean machine that not only I can enjoy and love but other people who loves trucks the project has been nothing but costume everything and has taken some time to do but in the end I'll be extremely satisfied with my project and I'm sure get alot of compliments and possibly some fellas wanting me to rework their trucks. I'm sure that the end results is gonna be the 305's I have on it in 4 wheel drive cruising at 45-55mph I can hit the throttle and smoke the tires like nothing even pulling a load take off but then some sports cars. I'm not done yet I even plan to install 2 turbos on it in which means pulling the engine again and reworking that the crank in it is steel and capable of handling 3000hp but the pistons and rods are cast will need upgrades to buy forged rods in Pistons will cost well over 2grand and I don't have that kind of cash laying around, however, I believe only 1 year Ford put forged everything in the 5.4l engines in the trucks 99 I found one for 200 bucks and will gladly purchase it believe it or not I only gave 100 for the dohc running 😅. I plan to finish it and fire it up for the first time today or tomorrow and I'm hoping to get 20mpg hwy hoping but we'll see depending on where the rpm's are running at at in over drive I will make the necessary changes in the gearing to get that and more due to the power it'll produce I can hardly wait to get that far, however, I'll be patient at this time.

    • @ItsDaJax
      @ItsDaJax 5 месяцев назад

      @@RobertMattson-fr2mo First off... paragraphs, my guy. Secondly, that sounds like a decent mild build, I hope you took care of the spark plug issues, if it was a gen that had that problem. Unless those planned turbos are small, shouldn't you be going for a supercharger, if you're trying to get all the torque?
      All mod motors have the same crank, which is a powder sintered crank, I believe. They all have the same cams* and hypereutectic pistons, and heads**. The only possible exception would be the 5.8s, in the GT500; it may, may, have a steel forged crank, it's an overbored 5.4, and probably still uses the same supercharger the Lightnings and Harleys use. The one in the GT is probably the same but with a different supercharger.
      Most people don't want them, mod motors cost a lot to build, just for little gains. All that for roughly a 30hp gain. The 4v 5.4 has a hair over 300hp. Probably as far as regular engines goes; it might be inbetween the 3v 4.6 with 305hp and the cyclone v6 with 312hp.
      * All engines share the same respective cams to their design
      **same as above, except the 4v 4.6 which unlike the 2v 4.6, and 5.4, and 4v 5.4, possibly even 3v, have three different heads.

    Old man here Have you ever herd of UD a two stroke diesel In 1955, the iconic two-stroke UD engine was born. At that time the race for horsepower had begun, and in Japan as well as overseas, trucks were traveling farther. Engines capable of 150-200 horsepower were in huge demand.
    The Uniflow scavenging Diesel engine-the origin of the UD name-was the first engine produced by a Japanese company to reach this level. The industry-first 150 horsepower version was followed by the UD6 engine, which further delivered 230 horsepower at a weight 40% lower than conventional models, making it one of the world’s lightest per horsepower engines.
    For truck owners, this meant lower vehicle weight and in turn less fuel used for a given distance just saying

      He'll get it to run one day in the future when he has a clear workshop, and the time and maybe a little more budget too. I think the trigger wheel and a wasted spark set up with a relatively cheap stand alone ecu like megasquirt is definitely the best way to get it to run in a horizontal configuration. It would also look great in a Mustang like the one in the shop.👍
      But a rat rod is much more practical and would give him more space for exhaust system routing. Maybe someone knowledgeable might give him some specs for an expansion chamber per cylinder one day. It would sure look good with 8 expansion chambers like stacks sticking up vertically on top of the engine, especially in a rat rod.

    A 2stroke is constituted by 2 things: The form, size and position of the different ports (intake, exhaust, boost) at the cylinder-walls, and the form, size and position of the resonance-chambers along the exhaust-pipes (8 in this case, cannot be united in groups of 2, 4 or 8). Please dont forget the resonance-chambers, or it won´t work at all...! The resonance-chamber gives better efficiency and double the power of a 4stroke at a distinct and pretty narrow RPM-band, but if you make the pipes (between exhaust-port and res.chamber) out of 2 tubes, sliding in each other, you get variable-length-exhausts, broadening the peak-power-RPM-band to all different and relevant RPMs, from the relevant 500-peak-power-RPM-band to 2-3000 RPMs !!! From what I´ve noticed, for 50cc, 12cm of lengthening lowers the peak-power-RPM at about 1000rpm. This should be valid for any cylinder-size, since the speed of sound isn´t affected by the cylinder´s size.

    the back cylinders starving is mostly a myth, they tried to say that with the tunnel rams and air scoops too, it should be turbulent enough to keep the fuel in suspension as that is the bigger issue than air distribution but i think it should work, should be able to tell by plug color in a very short amount of running anyway. also there are ways of dimpling the bottom of plenums like that to re introduce puddled fuel into the air if it becomes an issue. i think the turbulence of an intake pulse every 2 strokes will keep it working

    for the intake design, do a like a 140-180 elbow and make a design for the main intake feed a similar shape to how a aftermarket intake manifold is for a supra. Initial feed is large and tapers down to the rear cylinder, the shape is meant to force air to the rear cylinders first so they don't starve. Also, if you wanted to go efi, it can be done on the cheap side very easily!!! I've done it myself a few times already , you can get a good used standalone ecu that can run a 2 stroke or 4 stroke engine for a very good deal if you know where to look and what to look for. have the air come in from the middle. have each end squared off so flow will balance in the whole thing. youll end up with -0- shape intake and run a small carb on each side.
    no matter what your gonna have some fuel pooling. when intake is on bottom. call it cheap insurance when your letting off the throttle. youll have some oil to suck up.
    on my 2 stroke engines i drill out the oil passages slightly even though everyone says dont.
    what i have is oil and a tiny bit of fuel in my crank case at any given time instead of vapor. im fine with that.

I was saying I do TIG welding and aluminum TIG welding maybe we could use those aluminum butterflies and put some fuel injector bungs in the flange so you can use a megasquirt to operate your injectors and use the timing system under the flywheel?? One thing that I will say that I think you're going to have problems with is your exhaust system you have with a two-stroke you need to have expansion pipe on the cylinder so you could have the right amount of scavenging in order for a 2-stroke to run properly.

    Its been awhile since ive seen this project.. has anyone suggested 'up draft' carburetors yet? Also, you could absolutely get away with 4 side draft carbs, mounted down low, so you only need one 90° bend per runner..

    Can't you make one of these engines run with four MSD boxes? Seems like they used four capacitive discharge ignition units potted in one "box" and connected each cdi unit to a pair of coils for the cylinders that meet TDC at the same time. I think I could get one running with four Ford duraspark boxes or four GM 4-pin HEI ignition modules if that's your flavor 😂 they're relatively inexpensive... I think you just need some outside help, an extra viewpoint with experience to present you with some viable options for this setup

    I dont know if tauht about it but being a two stroke, you can run it upside down. It's only an idea. It sure make thing more complicated to fit it in a car but it seem to be really small for a v8

    Simplest is best. Stock carbs are tuned…easy…. Just weld up a intake manifold.

  • @nathanhansford76

    Rear cylinders won’t starve, just think about it a bit, 1) only one cylinder is on the intake stroke at anyone time. 2) each cylinder sucks the fuel air mixture in as it goes. (Manifold is always in a vacuum) you can confirm this with the firing order.

      The issue is likely not one of getting air to all cylinders, it's getting fuel and oil to all of them equally as the liquid tends to settle out. That's why carbed intake manifolds on inline engines usually have heat applied under the carb to help evaporate the fuel. This doesn't work so well in a 2T as the fuel might evaporate but the oil won't.
      If cylinders are running lean, especially in a 2T they'll run hot and short on oil. That's an issue.

    Build an expansion chamber on intake basically make a plenum as close to the block as possible combine both banks to one big wide chamber about 6 to 8 inches tall. Try about a 6 or 8 inch plenum chamber. Have your intake run straight down at end of plenum basically like you have it now kinda but have it connect down as far as possible at bottom of plenum. That way hopefully the air velocity coming down along with fuel won't puddle in bottom of intake 🤷 it's just a theory 🤣 where an engine like this may not require an expansion chamber on exhaust maybe it will work on intake. I know it's redundant but you need a little volume along with velocity as close to block as possible.

    • @astrawally8448

      it's a two stroke mate, the induction is done by the piston going up (not down like a four stoke) and fuel/air is initially drawn in underneath the piston in the crankcase. If you believe the fuel is still a liquid at this point, it will pool right in the bottom of the crankcase and never make it up past the transfer ports. But fuel is atomised no different to water in clouds, and like clouds it won't sink - water is heavier than air but the clouds still manage to float. Also Bernoulli's principle tells us if the intake is the same cross-sectional area, then at all points along that intake, the pressure and velocity (and hence flow) will be the same.

    • @nerd1000ify

      2-strokes don't normally need heating of the intake. They send the mixture through the crankcase before it goes into the cylinder, so usually it gets pretty well vapourised in there thanks to being constantly stirred by the spinning crankshaft and also heated up by the bottom of the piston. Also has an important function of cooling the moving parts; in a 4-stroke the oil cools the piston, bearings, etc basically by getting sprayed all over them and then draining back to the sump where the heat can be dissipated through the oil pan (or oil cooler). In a 2-stroke that obviously isn't an option, so the internal moving parts are mostly cooled by evaporation of the fuel as it passes through the crankcase.

  • @JOSH1657

    Do all the cylinders share the same crank space, like do they all pull fuel from the same crank area? If they do then the intake should be fine coz that's not where the cylinders are getting fuel if you know what I mean

      Well my experience is only with single cylinder stuff so I'm not sure how the evinrude works

    • @stevenbusk539
      @stevenbusk539 6 месяцев назад

      It wouldn't have a chance in running if the cylinders shared the same crankcase space. As in any other two stroke, every cylinder has its own sealed crankcase area from the next cylinder. I'm sure if he gets a decent aftermarket ignition system set up to suit a car configuration it will run to an extent, no matter what intake manifold design, carbs or EFI set up he uses. It would also run with or without the turbo, or a supercharger and with or without expansion chambers.
      Getting it to run well and more specifically to make more power than it does in a boat would be much more challenging, but none of this is essential. Getting a decent bell housing, thrust bearing and flywheel solution that's compact, strong and reliable is everything to making this fit and run in a car. Even the cooling with big enough radiators and an electric pump could be managed, but that engine and transmission set up needs to be much shorter and better engineered to ever see it sitting in a car and be usable. One day he'll have it done though, and he's done well to find the engines in the first place!

  • @MrKingdavis13

    You could flip the motor over and make a single carb work on the top as well. 2 stroke will run the same upside down.

    • @astrawally8448
      @astrawally8448 7 месяцев назад

      No it won't. These engines need individual circuits on the inlet to make horsepower. They rely on pulses or oscillation on the inlet (and exhaust) to be able to perform, their inlets are very much tuned length and individual for this very reason. A common plenum (the carb itself) will hurt power as each cylinder's pulses will interfere or null out each other.

    • @MrKingdavis13
      @MrKingdavis13 7 месяцев назад

      @@astrawally8448 Forced induction changes that like the old 2 stroke diesels from yesteryear. I think it is worth a try anyhow but it's no my project. I was going to attempt making a northstar engine run like a 2 stroke but still have the 4 stroke lower by doubling the cam speed since the ignition system is already programmed to fir at each tdc event to only reprogramming that would have to happen is the fuel injection so I think it would be quite simple.

    dude it costs like nothing to convert it to efi; Just go to a junk yard and find a truck LS motor harness and injectors, fit it and make a manifold and make it somehow trigger twice per revolution so it can inject the fuel on every stroke than other stroke like a 4 stroke would. After than you can tune the ecus on them. Or build a efi system with a speeddruino for around $300-400

      I have yet to tune a EFI on a 2 stroke, but they are far from as easy to tune as a 4 stroke. You can't rely on O2 sensors for tuning the same way you do with modern standalones on 4 strokes.
      I agree on the Speeduino, or maybe a Megasquirt.
      And a MAF and EGT sensors to help tune it.
