  • Laying down the floor beams! Things are moving along as I try and get ahead of the winter weather that's coming.
** EDIT ** I did not know how to mount the beams to the concrete originally. It seems kinda simple but for whatever reason, I couldn't wrap my head around it. If you keep watching episodes, you will see that I eventually use dry anchors (wedge bolts) into the piers and attach the beams. Better late than never!

I don't recommend piling dirt up around the piers because it allows termites to travel a shorter distance before they reach wood. They will even travel across a treated beam to get to untreated wood. A piece of square sheet metal placed on top of the piers with the edges bent downward will make for an inexpensive termite shield.

Looking back I wish I had the confidence to put wet anchors in the concrete but was scared they wouldn't be square.

Glad I found this because it is exactly what I am getting ready to do for my cabin build to get it close to the lake! Awesome

A 4 by 6 beam would be ideal for that size cabin, that's what handsome guys do.

Yes, I’m watching all your videos in order. Been through a microwaveable pizza, and two ice cream cups. Lol I’m actually going to build a home for myself soon on a piece of land that my parents gave me. So this content really is helping me more than you know. I appreciate the jokes and just being human as well. Dropping the tape measure. Using your drill as a hammer every now and then. It’s real life. Glad to know I’m not the only one doing those things. Concrete poles in ep one are gold for me. I’m learning more than you could understand

Not only were you wasting your time putting the dirt from your vegetable garden around your concrete peers, you’ve created a very handy entrance for the termites to get into your cabin! That was a very bad idea! Now you should go back and remove all that dirt and just let the concrete show and that gives you the advantage of seeing any termite tubes coming up the side of the concrete to your cabin!

I think these early episodes are your best and most enjoyable. You are an absolutely fantastic teacher, producer and I have gotten energized to build in part because of you. My only suggestion is to take out some of the added music and let the content exist a little more. Quietly building a small cabin is by itself some of the best mental health therapy I have. I can relax to just watching this and you describing what’s going on. It’s how I can relax in 2020: relaxing and learning.
