We have a Floor - Cabin Build Ep.4

- We've got a floor! Took longer than expected but it's on and it's sturdy! Unfortunately, the day after I finished it rained for two days straight. The wood got wet but I was able to protect it with some metal roof. Very glad I went with plywood as it didn't soak up nearly as much water as OSB would have.

Your 2nd piece of plywood should have been a half sheet so as to stagger your joints.
Thanks, man, for showing me your interesting building project!
I truly love this channel. Thanks mate. Keep it up
It's been my dream to build my own little cabin for small getaways. Your channel looks awesome and I'm learning so much. Thank you for the effort you put into these videos, I know its no easy task. Cheers!
just ran across this channel tonight and got sucked into this series, love the videos
I guess I'm kind of randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to watch new series online?
@Cayden Tripp i would suggest flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Cayden Tripp I watch on FlixZone. Just google for it :)
Hey! Man I really appreciate these cabin builds and how thorough they are. I've recently started up a sleepout/cabin building company as a first year apprentice. It's a side business. But people are wanting them! 20+.. So thank you for these videos, they will help out!! Keep sharing 👍
You're living the dream!
Great job
Underrated channel.
Subbed.
cabin is looking great. i like the way you show yourself building every step of the way. not doing the job an saying i got this done. youll be proud when you get it finished. SIMPLE LIFE IS THE BEST LIFE. KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING.
Jerry Pruitt thanks for the kind words!
Your really good strategy of using the eight inch beams to provide room for error showed up right at the 4:20 mark.
I came for the floor, I stayed for the river dancing 😆
Me too
Good video! Thanks
@ 2:18 Bitumen shingle under the beam and on top of the post and fix the metal strap vertically not horizontally and make the base fit the size of the plywood too @ 11:08
We build ours 18 " off the ground to protect from rain, snow, wood rot, etc.
That's a safe distance! Smart.
My main concern is how do you trust your beam not moving since they were not attached to the concrete?? Please help me out. Thank you
Lol nice moves! 🤙🏽
Looks good I am right now laying my pier block I have 16 piers in a 16x24 cabin with a 6x24 front porch. I think I will glue and screw my 3/4” t&g subfloor down. I would have liked to have seen you break your floor sheeting joints, however very nice job !
Wow I appreciate the details you show... but anyway I have several questions ✌🏼😂
New follower here. Love the way the foundation looks. Haha, not sure about those dance moves. Just kidding. Great video. I’m intrigued to see future videos.
This stuff can get wet guys. As long as it dries out before you put final coverings on it.
I just started a cabin build so I wanted to entertain myself on your build in the meantime. Its interesting to know all the different ways to frame a floor. I went with running 2 x 10's 16' into two end beams...so the floor system is all on one level. But it all works!
You provide some good humor along the way too thats fun to watch
if you're going to use the ties, you should have put them on the beams first, measuring them out. then, you just drop each into its predetermined location
Nice
How did you mount the 2 2X8 to the individual concrete supports?
That’s what I was thinking too!
Gravity, by the looks of it.
Yep glue that sub floor
how come the beams aren't somehow connected to the concrete its just laying on top isn't that unsafe?
my thoughts exactly
I’m pretty sure there are brackets in the concrete and underneath the wood.
they’re**
Fr
Didn’t see any brackets al lot of building mistakes no joist header, sub flooring joints are butted they need to be staggered, always screw & glue sub floor. He did good work just a few mistakes.
The first five seconds of dance made me subscribe. Your joy was just simply contagious!!
I think I remember you saying some people have told you that there's a better way to do the joists, but I actually like your setup. It will support a ridiculous amount of weight, and it doesn't depend on the sheer strength of your fasteners (or brackets).
You sir make me feel good!
A bit of felt on top of the concrete post under the timber beam would be great
@@sheilaharrison8547 to stop the damp / moisture rise from the wet ground up the concrete post and soak in to the timber .. meaning it will rot .. felt would act as a barrier between the two... timber will last a lot longer
I've also seen a few videos were they use shingles on top of the concrete.
Great series so far. We're building a 10'x20' shed style roof. Can you show an example of crown up for the beams and floor joists?
I don’t have footage to show you exactly. But just look down the spine of the board and find it go up hill and then down hill. That’s the crown. Or basically the rainbow!
@@WoodnessGoodness Crown facing up right?
How is the joist resting(secure)on the concrete posts?!
The bro thing to do these days is build a something like this.
Is all of the lumber you're using already made weather durable? Or do you need to apply some sealant later on?
Hi. What type of wood you used for the basement? Besides playwood..
How did you achor the double beams to the piers?
I guess i would have glued the floor down - structural strength and no squeeks
greg radke yea I figured after the fact...but I’m learning...next cabin will be bomb proof!
@@WoodnessGoodness You glue that sub-floor down and you're just creating a headache down th eline if you ever have to replace any of that plywood.
@@markf.4063 Always glue/foam down a subfloor. How often do you replace the subfloor in your house?! once in a lifetime?
how deep did you go with the cement pillars!?
Interesting. I built my cabin floor in a similar way. I did however install metal brackets into the still wet concrete. Then ran three parallel rows of 4x4 beams on the 9 piers. Then built the floor basically as you did on top of the pier and beam layout. I did mine 16x20 so that none of the plywood would need to be cut. There is a 2' overhang on both ends, but it's very solid. I did do the chicken wire and insulation before laying down the flooring, and I did also glue the flooring.
Keep up the great work.
Thank you! Great to hear what you did. Love seeing all the different ways and better ways of doing things.
Interesting use of the strong ties, never seen them used for floor joists. Why go that route as opposed to joist hangers on rim joists? While on the subject, why no rim joists? Maybe it's a northern vs. southern thing?
Mark F. Haha I think it’s an amateur thing. I’d seen it done before in NZ and also basements seem to go from one side to another and rest on the foundation. I guess that’s what I was thinking when I did it? I think it will work...I hope!
How many square feet is your cabin going to be
Just started looking ! Nice series, but what have you done under the floor to weather proof it ??
Takes me a while but i eventually do it!
Was wondering the same, maybe a membrane above the joists, under the Ply....saying that.... it would be worse right now as the rain would be trapped ! hmmmm😬
hi guy.
u not fixed the beams on piles.
no matter?
As soon as you finished dancing I said to myself “damn I hope it don’t rain”
Cut to next scene...
Sorry maybe the question has been asked before but what are the bracket names? The ones that stop the warping. You're one of the few who show your work very well. My polish husband who is qualified to judge you says you are spot on. Keep building please
Not sure what the brackets are called...thanks for the kind words!
It looks like the brackets are Simpson H1 clips. They are not rated to stop the twisting. They make sure the joist doesn't move in/out or side to side. For twisting you use a rim joist around the perimeter or blocking in between the joists
Hey guys where can I learn to build a cabin like this
Right here baby!!!!
Why no rim boards?
Did u not insulate the flooring?
What size is this foundation?
and 12 pillars or 9 for foundation?
I dont know if i can trust a right handed carpenter who wears his hammer on his left side
Edit: not to mention one whos tool belt is brand new.
All jokes aside nice build coming along nice!!!
Hahaha I know! I promise I learn to hold my hammer in my teeth in no time!
What keeps the beams from tipping or falling over?
Great question. I didn't know what to do at first but eventually used dry anchors into the concrete. One of my mistakes...
Winguardium leviousar
u missed adding chickenwire as a pocket to ram some insulation before adding the plywood as floor.
Use a wooden handle hammer, its better for your wrist.
Check the forecast before next time
Nice, what about insulation?
I do it later. Unfortunately making it harder on me!
Should stagger the subfloor sheeting that’s a weak way you done it.
Palm nailer..invest in one save your hands!
Calluses save your hands
Shouldnt the plywood be staggered?
Lance Ladewig should of, could of, would of.
I was kinda hoping something wasn't even so I could see what he has to do to fix it......I know I will have that problem at some point lol.
Well done, BUT...loos like the floor is floating on concrete bases?? How do you secure those beams / floor to concrete?? Did not see that, next big wind.....bye, bye????;o)
Eero Laukkanen I drilled wedge anchors and used brackets into the concrete pilings later on. I wasn’t sure what to do at first. Learning as I go!
Bro do u... Even have rim joists???
How do you attach to the concrete or you dont?
I do attach it later with dry anchors into the concrete
What is the width and length of this floor?
What kind of wood?
Wow I’m Canadian and could’ve sworn you were Canadian. U sound like one.
I am! Just live in Virginia
@@WoodnessGoodness okay I knew it! Just splurged through your series and saw a leafs hat too and knew okay this guys Canadian. Nice Virginia is beautiful. I subscribed!
im sure this has been mentioned but what is the messurements of this platform? 16'x16'?
thanks
12x20
Hey, you don't have anything that connect those double beams onto the concrete foundation.
I didn't know what to do so I ended up doing it a little later. You'll see!
How long did this whole build take you?
Still building!
No insulation?😁
Why you didn't fixe the wood in the concrete base?
ivan galante I didn’t know what to do at first but I did it a little later. Made more work for myself but we got it!
hi, nice video! what about isolation?
What is the point of those metal plates nailed at middle of the beam where the 2 boards meet? I would think it would be unnecessary if you nailed the 2 beams together with a row of 3-16D nails at 16” o.c.
They could totally be unneeded. Not sure, thought maybe it was a good idea!
@@WoodnessGoodness cant argue that one bit. I saw in a other video you mentioned you arent sure if the joists on top of beams was best method vs using joist hangers. I think you did it right, it's definitely more strong and slightly higher off ground giving more space for access underneath.
No insulation in floor?
Insulate later on...wish I did it then!!!
shouldnt you have staggered the plywood?
Winston Scott that would of definitely helped a bit. With the tongue and groove I found it was strong enough and didn’t want to make too much waste. Good point though! Next time!
NOT have ready floor before add insulation 300mm to under deck.
This is probably a dumb question but what’s the problem with the floor getting wet?
No big problem from what I know. It’s just not ideal and can start to warp the sheathing. Sitting water is never great and over time can sometimes delaminates the plywood. I’m fairly certain, most houses had rain on its sheathing while being built.
Bruh, at 10:25 were you trying to hammer the board back into place while you were on top of it or am I missing something?
There’s a good chance. I am a semi professional amateur.
@@WoodnessGoodness I found your channel literally during work tonight, and we're apparently both named Graham, so....
*cue highlander music*
Glad to see your weak legs gained enough strength for that jump for joy!😁
Me too!
There's something oddly cathartic watching a hammer whacking in nails....😳
Are you sure that’s how you put those plywood sheets??
I should staggered them ideally.
What state r u in?
anyone ever tell you, you sound exactly like Nick Kroll....lol
Hahaha is bee since I started this channel I’ve got it quite a bit!!! Hahaha
Your piles are what?
Need a band?
@@rzeitler9560 get over here. You can be my opener.
This has to be a joke...I see no past framing experience in these vids
