This is a dream, someone else knows about this game? I thought I owned the only copy of this game in the world considering how NO ONE seems to know about it. It's a great game, it's one of those games that pushes audio and visuals to the max and is actually fun to play.
Gah! I hope you've at least played it. I'm not even sure how I got it. I think my brother came home with it one day and it's become one of my favorite games on the Genesis! I keep coming back to play it, beat it on the hardest mode without dying. From what I gathered it failed because SEGA didn't market it at all, Gau went out of business because of it
It's definitely a showcase title and has one great set of tracks. Too bad the serious issue with it is a big, annoying one in that it's one of the few action titles on the platform that runs at half update rate (effectively 30fps) and that hurts a 2D scrolling action-shooter quite a lot. The early shoot 'em up, Curse, and some Wolfteam titles also suffer a bit from this development decision. Like many modern games, the difference is really pronounced when switching to or from a fullly fluid 60Hz game, which back then, was the rule rather than the exception on the 8- and 16-bit 2D-focused consoles.
Ranger X is easily one of my favorite Sega Genesis games of all time along with MazinSaga & Cyborg Justice! Nice to see other people were able to enjoy this hidden gem.
@@KTJohnsonkidThunder hes using a model 2 right now but with a sound mod. I have an old model 1 and love it so gotta agree there. But fyi later model 1s are no better than model 2s. So it's more complicated. At least tones and sounds on model 2 is correct imo it's just got that fuzz. My neighbor had a model 2 and it didnt stop us from jamming to sound test menus!
04:07 Stage 1-2 (Temple) is my jam. Noriyuki Iwadare is a beast, the CUBE driver might be my favourite sound on the system, after Technosoft's, and Hitoshi Sakimoto's driver
Well, if I remember the composer was that guy Yoshinobu Hiraiwa but the sound director was Noriyuki Iwadare. Maybe he used Iwadare's sound driver with his supervision.
Love this game and its soundtrack; thank you for uploading this! Ranger-X is truly one of the Genesis's best kept secrets. Question for you Dustin, could I make a request for a future upload? I'd love for you to record the music from El Viento & Earnest Evans on the Genesis. If you could, that would be awesome. Thanks!
Here is my story on how i got this game back in the 90s. I asked my mom could i get a new game so we went to kb toys. Instead of going to the case with the new titles i looked in the bargin bin and seen ranger x. The box art grabbed my attention, also got tecmo super bowl and batman returns that day. Spent alot of time playing this game growing up.
I always like jamming to this amazing soundtrack and my personal favorite is the Japanese only hidden stage theme which is Unknown Track (Sound Test 09)
_"Part Man... Part Machine..."_ Apparently the publishers didn't realize that humans were tiny compared to the player's mech, meaning that the player is piloting a giant robot suit.
the game that always felt hella inspired by tekkaman which somehow we got in the west where i lived early as fuck on sunday morning along w dbz in the mid early and mid 90s on local channels i swear this game is slept on so hard
This game is fantastic, even though it's brutal in difficulty. Love the soundtrack. If I can make a request, is it possible to do the Red Zone soundtrack? I know it might not be possible because it's crazy long, but I can dream that a good recording of that might exist some day. Gleylancer is another good one that should hopefully be doable. I would do it myself but I don't own a flash cart or a repro.
While it could be argued Thunder Force IV had the better soundtrack in that era, I still loved this one just as well. ... that and I preferred Ranger X as a whole. Just seemed to have a more gripping narrative and aesthetic.
@@avideogamemaster ha! just noticed this, thanks for the clarification, I suppose it's using the same sound tools/samples then, some parts sounds so similar
For the rest of my life I'm keeping the underrated Sega Genesis classic from my childhood. It's a shame this game never got the recognition it deserved on account of Sega focusing on those stupid FMV games for the CD add on instead of good Sega CD games like Popful Mail, Dark Wizard, Shining Force CD, Vay, Lunar Silver Star/Eternal Blue, Sylpheed, SoulStar, and Snatcher just to name some. Sega should have advertised Ranger X as it is cause it would've sold well.
Not my personal favorite CUBE soundtracks, but it's catchy to listen to. Although, my personal taste for this soundtrack will change when I have a chance to listen to it again.
Nice to hear. Personally, Zero Wing and Gleylancer are the best of CUBE. I'll certainly give Ranger-X another go at its soundtrack in the future. I think the reason why I'm not a fan of this soundtrack is that the Snare drum samples that the composer used kinda put me off a bit. Not to mention these snares sound a little quiet if you ask me.
ben owen Opening Theme, Mission Objective, Stage 1 & 2, Stage 6-1 (labelled as Unknown Track (Sound Test 17)), Final Boss, Ending Theme, Unknown Track (Sound Test 06), Unknown Track (Sound Test 14), and the JP-exclusive hidden Alex Kidd bonus stage (labelled as Unknown Track (Sound Test 09)) are my favorite tracks.
one of best games from mega drive and genisis, is not the best because sonic 3 & knuckles offer an wide content... also urban strike was goos as ranger x too.

I nearly bought this once back in 1995/6 for £5 or something when it was sitting in a bargain bin and plumped for PGA Tour 96 instead!
Gah! I hope you've at least played it.

Curse is much worse. I swear that is running at 20fps. I'm really grateful that
Knowing is half the battle. Uh... In choosing good games.
I do actually have the menu screen music for PGA 96 on my channel it's not bad.

Great soundtrack. Sounds amazing on real hardware!
On a Model 1, yes. On a Model 2, not so much.
Holy crap I'm a huge fan of your music!

That mission objective music has a gorgeous tone to it.

very underated sega game. every stage was unique in design, difficulty, mission, and music
Hell yeah! What a great game too. I am definitely gonna cover this game at some point in time. Oh yeah, composer is Noriyuki Iwadare as well Dustin!
Hell yeah, and thanks! Soooooooooooooon!
Is it just me or is the game way too short...and easy.
Yeah I actually agree, its a breeze but still quite the great game regardless me thinks.
Well, if I remember the composer was that guy Yoshinobu Hiraiwa but the sound director was Noriyuki Iwadare. Maybe he used Iwadare's sound driver with his supervision.
oh shit Noriyuki Iwadare the composer who did music for both Lunar & the Grandia series.
I've watched a review for this game and the video featured the stage 3-1 song for a moment, then I had to look it up and listen!
This is one of my favorite games of all time and the music is part of the reason.
24:37 is my jam. Who's with me
An underrated soundtrack for the most underrated Mega Drive game!
One of the best games I have ever had!
I'm so happy this exists. Thank you for posting. I'm going to have find a way to play this game, among other sega games soon!!
I love this game, thanks Dustin!

I never knew these tracks played with stereo so much until now.
Listen to it with headphones if you never have.
Imagine listening it on a real megadrive model 1 like i am right now .Huge diference
Legendary soundtrack if I ever heard one

I still remember the amazing parallax of this game. It's one of the most impressive on Genesis
3-1 music. I remember coming home from blockbuster after renting this game. First time I heard that track i about punched my dog.

"Very, very small part man, mostly machine" doesn't sound as cool 😎
My childhood!
Another classic. Please when you get the time think about Splatter house 2, it has some really great tunes.
Great Game and Special Music !!

God I miss this game I want it back so I can play it and I don't wann play it on a damn computer
Stage 5-1@20:33 is such a good track. Who would write a track like that for an action game? I love it.
That s1 baseline...
stage 6-1 factory theme is my favorite....i like the build up..its like im running up the stairs to reach the top and yell victory is mine!!!!!!!!
There's a song called "Strawberry Letter 23" by The Brothers Johnson that kinda sounds like Stage 4-1's theme
Camu Tao - King of Hearts ♥️
I love this game but I am so bad at it. Someday I'll get a real Genesis and finally play it as it was intended.
I will tell my kids that 8:08 was Little Drummer Boy.

15:48 banger
Unknown Track 14 is the Stage 6 boss (the one at the end of the factory stage, not the final boss)Unknown Track 09 plays in the hidden stage.
You mean Unknown Track 17
I always wondered about the backstory to this game: why did the enemy attack? who were the characters? etc
Great soundtrack, cool game, just wished it was 60 fps
oddly similar to Soleil even if the games couldn't be more different, it really shows it's the same composer\sound engine
not the same composer actually
@@RockoEstalon Nope, the composer of Centy is Motokazu Shinoda

Same devs and composer.
Not kickin' myself anymore as i just purchased a complete copy in box on ebay for $40. In general a complete copy can sell for more.

Another soundtrack request: Starflight, developed by EA for Sega Genesis.
Rings of Saturn must have played heavily mega drive shoot em ups😁😁😁
Why not? Remember what came after the Genesis.
I love you.
The music in this game is not my personal favorite CUBE soundtracks, but it's still catchy!
