In school this was literally the hardest thing to model because I never studied anatomy. Character modeling is the absolute toughest. Edgeflow is the rule and to get those radial loops is a pain. Great tut. Meticulous and nicely well narrated.

You mention that portrait photography or dramatic lighting isn't good for reference. I always felt reference that revealed the form of the shapes, landmarks and anatomy were gold. For me even lighting is important for texturing but modeling I like adding dynamic lighting to help me read things, especially if number of images are limited I think the biggest hurdle for artists using found reference is not compensating for perspective , forcing people going back and forth from front and side and trying to figure out why nothing is lining up! As always great work. Thank you for sharing
Hey there Mr Mussi... would you happen to know how to animate a metal lathing process in Maya, where, say, a thread for a large screw is cut out of a steel cylinder?
@@fivemeomedia Yeeah I know, I only said that I prefer ZBrush for doing characters, because for me do characters on Maya it's a too much long process. I'm not comparing only saying wich one I prefer for do characters
@@fivemeomedia That's the point. Modelling a head from scratch in Maya is an ancient workflow, everybody with a working brain is sculpting heads in ZBrush and doing retopo in Maya nowadays. It separates shape from topology (which makes is easier) and is much faster.
@@jlmussi I was playing with the shrink wrap a bit. Not sure if it is the angle difference between my view and yours but it seems that mine shrinkwraps smaller than yours does compared to the size of the eye. It's got the same basic shape and it's not really an issue. But considering that I seem to have wierd behaviors in other tools as well (Like the radial symmetry issue I had where it stacks all of the segments over where the first instance would be created) I'm sure that it may be in my settings somewhere. I really need to dedicate more time to this.
I was looking at the 2nd Pass on the Head Model downloaded from your Gumtree. It only seems to bring up two small parts you modeled for the Lacrimal pieces. Nothing else loads for me. The 1st pass loads fine loading the head and eyes though.
@@jlmussi Thanks. Also when I import Pass two into a scene with the first pass the right eye from 1st pass seems to move almost to the exact same position as the Left Eye from Pass 1. I've never seen that before so I thought it may be something to look into.
Ears sold separately. lol Actually I did start with the ears, but ended up scrapping it as it made the process more complex and video too long. I will probably end up doing a video just for the ears.

Had at least 2 classes on this in person and still hard , definitely one of the hardest things to get right so thank you for this!!
Yup definitely agree, this was one of the hardest things to do when I first started out. Glad I could help.
Thankyou for making this video!!!!! It helped me through my 3rd semester of school in my 3d modeling class!
Waited for so long for this kind of a poly head modeling tutorial even though I use Zbrush nowadays this is really helpful.
I use Z-brush as well, they both have their uses and pros and cons.

Its crazy you don't have more subscribers
Thank you, great video. Not a video for direct beginners but surely for beginners how have seen a whole process of human head modelling
One of the best👌Thank you!
Thanks for stopping by the comments section Simon.
Very good tuto! Thank you for sharing.

I'm new to maya interface. I really want to know how your mesh is in 1 hotkey mode ( not 3) yet your object is kind of smooth.
Definitely the most complete guide for a head modelling ! I like your technics and explanations are very clear, next is rigging this face? ;D
Glad you liked the video. Sorry but rigging is not my fortay but maybe I'll get a guest appearance by somebody that could do it.
Will you be making a body tutorial in the future?
Thanks Zbrush for exist! Haha but Maya can be useful for lowpoly and topology changes
zbrush and maya are completely different software with different workflows its like comparing apples to oranges

@@RyoMassaki ok...i dont get whats your point?
So would you say starting by placing spheres for the eyes is a good place to start?
Yes and you can quad draw on top to start creating the eyelids.

I'm very good at drawing so I just draw the refs, I use blender but this is useful😁
Yup drawing works as long as general proportions are correct.
