I think the writers didn't consider the audience thinking the quote was a joke, but I can understand someone thinking it was if they aren't familiar with the novel.
Here's how I'd rewrite 'The Snurks'. Firstly, have them be the main characters. Despite being the main villains, their crimes never amount to anything more than petty vandalism. Really, they're just lashing out at being ostracized from by rest of Gaya for their individual quirks. The gang have a close, almost familial bond, with Galger and Bramph even having raised Zerk after finding him abandoned as a baby. However, Zerk secretly yearns to be seen as more than just a ruffian, all while trying to appease his stern father figure, Galger. Due to their cunning and determination from being thwarted every other episode, they adjust to the real world quickly after being transported there. Meanwhile, Boo and Zino start bickering due to the sudden absence of plot armor. But when the Snurks find out the mad scientist's plan, they're horrified, having never hurt or killed anyone and realize he needs to be stopped. Alanta and Zerk's romance would be more fleshed out, with her being attracted to him because of his free spirit, feeling repressed by her role, him for her down to earth nature, despite her royal status and just how stifled they both are by society's expectations of what they should be. The Snurks grow more heroic and the heroes more wily, realizing they're more than their character archetypes. They use this to defeat the mad Scientist and find a way back home. The film ends with Alanta and Zerk together, Boo and Zino as better friends, and the Snurks being honored as heroes.

Hilariously, when Fractured Fairytales did Puss In Boots, it was oddly straightforward. Though, it was one of the first episodes where the "fractured" bit was just throwing some jokes in there instead of twisting the stories proper.
Renegade Animation(the company behind obscure Cartoon Network show HiHi Puffy AmiYumi) did other knockoff movies that also tried to be Fractured Fairytales, such as Tappy Toes & Chop Kick Panda.
I'm surprised that the Puss in Boots in this video isn't the French CGI movie that features a dub where William Shatner decided to do this annoying cartoon kitty cat voice instead of just his usual self aware hammy bit. Granted, it's far more interesting and has a lot going for it otherwise, rather than a bad imitation of a Jay Ward cartoon. Anyway, I think we're also forgetting the early 00's where Shrek-o-Mania ran rampant and we had a LOT of mid-actually bad Twisted Fairy Tales movies coming out of the woodwork. Happily Never After, Hoodwinked (which wasn't directly one at first, but Weinstein forced it with the second one), and even Jim Henson Productions making a trio of meh CGI Fairy Tale movies. Parody versions of Fairy Tales aren't exactly new with Shrek, but there was no denying that lesser studios wanted to cash in. Even Tangled was almost one of these, and still was marketed as such.
I remember watching Fungus the Bogeyman as a kid, having it on DVD, I barely remember anything about it, all I remember was skipping through the parts and got a random ass jumpscare from one if the characters screaming at a human. I also watched the 2nd adaptation, I didn’t like it as much

Though are the names I recognize. Shame their talents were wasted. Though Troll-land does have it worse with more talented people being wasted. Other than Dick Van Dyke, we have Ja Rule, Christopher Watkins, Jerry O'Connell and Debbi Derryberry.

Absolutely epic video! I’m trying to complete a DVD set of these knock-offs. (God help me.😅) This makes for an excellent and useful guide. It’s kind of amazing how many of these there are given CGI animation wasn’t exactly cheap or easy on the early 2000’s. Seriously you can put together an entire book shelf of DVD covers made to emulate Shrek, it’s crazy.

Absolutely epic video! I’m trying to complete a DVD set of these knock-offs. (God help me.😅) This makes for an excellent and useful guide. It’s kind of amazing how many of these there are given CGI animation wasn’t exactly cheap or easy on the early 2000’s. Seriously you can put together an entire book shelf of DVD covers made to emulate Shrek, it’s crazy.
