This was the opening song in a one-hour concert that aired in 1983 on late-night TV. It was one of the first times U.S. audiences really got to see Phil as a solo artist and it was mind-blowing to get hit with this song right off the bat. Shortly after this, he really blew up. Genesis had its biggest-selling album to date and then Phil had top-10 U.S. hits with Against All Odds and Easy Lover, followed by his massively successful album No Jacket Required.

I honestly think the best live performance of Mama by Genesis is from the 2007 Live Over Europe Tour, recorded in Rome, Italy I believe. It's a more "mature" version and obviously Phil and the band are a lot older, but it's just as immense, creepy, and powerful. The sound and video quality is outstanding, and as always, tour drummer Chester Thompson is amazing... his playing is like thunder from the Gods!! Check it out on RUclips

Holy CRAP!!! Honey I've been loving this song and this Pasadena performance since I was 13 years old in 1982!!! I'm now 55 and still love this song and this performance more than ever. Never anything quite like this song ever...before or since. And your priceless reaction tonight gave me some of the biggest laughs I've had in several years!!! Laughing my ass off all alone in my living room! I cannot thank you enough, and I'm so, so glad you enjoyed this song....and more important, sharing it with a much younger generation, whom I know for a fact have been STARVING for music of true depth and quality.... and Phil Collins....well....there truly was no other artist quite as prolific or busy than Phil Collins throughout the entirety of the 1980's.
