    Thanks for your video, as I need to do this with my Macbook Pro. One thing I might suggest is to slow down a bit, as you clearly know this stuff inside and out. But for me, even as pretty tech-savvy, you fly by every step so fast I had to repeatedly back up and watch again. Your video did help with my fear of going through this process, though, so thanks for your expertise.

    If you need to run Mojave, the actual version of APFS format in Big Sur and above will update to a newer version so the volume Mojave is on will boot with an error about the disk format. You can use Volume with Catalina and above and have all the space sharing advantages of APFS just fine. I dual boot a 2012 Mac Mini with Mojave and Catalina using separate partitions on the same drive to avoid this error while my 2012 Mac Pro dual boots Sonoma and Catalina off 2 volumes on the same drive just fine using OpenCore. The disk error didn’t seem to do any harm on the Mojave boot disk on the Mac Mini but I think people using older systems for compatibility with software that’s Mojave only should be made aware of this.

    Nice! Does this mean that I can instal the latest OS on my iMac + 10.14. Mojave and still run Photoshop CS6 on it?😮 (Because it won’t run on anything later than Mojave.
    Would be soooo useful!

    Anyone know how to merge/undo a dual boot setup to consolidate to a more current OS? i.e. I have a 2013 iMac dual booted with El Capitan and Catalina. I want to bring everything to Catalina so I can do a clean clone to an external ssd running whatever the lastest OS that will run on this machine/config (Ventura?). I understand most of the apps won’t run on the latest OS. Mainly wanting all my files/data. At the very least I want to merge to Catalina and run that on the external ssd. Thanks!!

    Amazing video, Andrew! Do you know if (even without Bootcamp for Mac M1) we can install Windows ARM on Volumes or Partitions? Thank you so much!!!

  • @PoetryFilms
    @PoetryFilms Год назад +1

    Why do you select Partition here when Apple's own how-to suggests selecting a Volume? To be honest, I thought Apple's instructions skipped over the reasoning, and the issue of whether to select the 'home' Volume or the Data volume associated with it, so I came here. But now I'm still not clear

    • @AndyMcClements
      @AndyMcClements Год назад +1

      Agree. The guy confuses volumes and partitions when he's speaking, I'm not convinced he's done this in the optimal way. To me it's more intuitive to add a second volume at the container level. I'll have to look elsewhere for better info..

    • @PoetryFilms
      @PoetryFilms Год назад +1

      @@AndyMcClements I've done this in the meantime and it worked out perfectly. The presenter's confusion between Volumes and Partitions seems to originate with Apple. If you select Partition, you are indeed offered an opportunity thereafter to choose Volume, which is very confusing. As you say, the 'right way' to do this, and the way that worked without glitch or hitch for me, is to choose Volume at the container level and proceed, carefully, from there. (Actually I don't know why I didn't do this to continue using an older OS before: it's great to have the latest OS on the main volume but an older OS, and a handful of legacy applications, still available on the second volume too.

      You can access your other partition's data through Finder, and you can give yourself permissions to access the user folders.

    • @PoetryFilms
      @PoetryFilms Год назад +1

      @@aussietwiggySimplest solution is to delete the whole volume, create a new volume and install Monterey into that. If Monterey is on your main drive you can Restart with Shift down then choose Reinstall then select the appropriate drive. If it’s not you have to find the Monterey installer online. A tip: any time you install a new OS on anything, copy the installer file before installation as it automatically disappears once you install it and can be hard to source afterwards.

    Hi Andrew - I have managed to upgrade my macOS on my Mac Mini to Ventura using Open Core Legacy Patcher, but I now seem to have my applications divided between two internal SSD hard drives...! How can I combine my macOS and applications on one SSD and leave the other SSD for my files - especially the heavier iTunes files? I also want to make sure the Mac always boots into the correct SSD each time. Thank you!

  • @exidion54

    Let's say I want the two OSes to be isolated, in the sense that you can't access the files of one from the other, nor see its partition in Disk Utility, would I be able to achieve that by creating a partition rather than a volume?

    • @keot777
      @keot777 Год назад

      Yes, I did exactly this today. Create a partition instead, and follow all the other instructions, and you should be fine! Works exactly the same, except with no shared space

    • @tobbe8287
      @tobbe8287 Год назад +1

      @@keot777 I think what exidion54 means is that if you use volumes and install two OSes, when you're in the first OS, you can see and access all the files of the other OS as well. If this is not desired, I suppose you can create user accounts with different passwords on the two OSes and enable filevault. This way they will be encrypted with with different keys, and you can only access the other volume's files if you know the encryption (user) password of the other OS. If they're encrypted with different passwords, then when you boot up either of the OSes, it will ask for the password of the other volume when you log in to be able to mount it and access the files. If you don't have the password or click cancel, then you won't be able to access the files of the other OS either.
