    Very nice tutorial. I learned a few new things that I'll have to try. Instead of cmd + m to minimize, you can use cmd + h to hide an application. Then when you cmd + tab to the app, all your windows of that application show up. If you hold the option key when you hover over the red/yellow/green buttons, you get alternate display options. You can make your app window fill the screen without it creating a whole separate desktop. I always put my Applications, Documents, and Downloads folders on the dock. I find them useful there. In the dock you can right-click on them to choose how you want them to display (I choose display as folder), and you can choose how you want to view their contents (I find "grid" and "list" more useful than "fan").

      Its way simpler and more reliable, It also prevents apps from planting their files deep into your system and instead keeping them compact just inside the app itself. So when you want to delete something you dont have to install a third party uninstaller to make sure every single file is removed from your system

    • @xtan-yt
      @xtan-yt 2 месяца назад +14

      @@mertilizm can't agree with the last statement, the 'data' of the application will be still present on "./local/share/applicationname". You will have to manually remove it.

    • @ZaneAlgogh
      @ZaneAlgogh 2 месяца назад +8

      @mertilizm it does not work this way for Adobe apps. All of the cache isn't consolidated inside the .app, it's in some bullshit directory somewhere. So I may move the Adobe After Effects.app to the trash can to get rid of the 5gb install but it won't get rid of the 15gb worth of random playback cache that it generated

    • @ZaneAlgogh
      @ZaneAlgogh 2 месяца назад

      @@mertilizmeven then, when you go to the launchpad and long-press an icon so that the apps start wiggling, you only get the option to uninstall apps by pressing the "x" icon IF they were installed from the Mac app store, since that guarantees that every single piece of cache it generates is consolidated inside the app manifest . If it was downloaded from the internet it won't give you that option since macos can't guarantee it won't leave junk somewhere else on the system. I think this architecture would be super solid if there was a better way to link the app and its cache together

    I was a lifelong Windows user since 95, but I hated when they brought in Window snapping. Whenever I was trying to just move and position a window to a custom size that I needed, instead Windows would grab the Window and suck it up on the side. It was so frustrating. Was relieved when I moved to MacOS in 2020. But I did setup keyboard shortcuts (a built in feature on Mac) to snap Windows for the rare times I actually need that.

    There are so many comments about how bad Windows is, that one might think that Mac OS is something from heaven.
    I like Mac OS. The system where the only way to show all the icons in the status bar on your mac with notch is to pay $16 for Bartender.
    I like Mac OS. The system that has the worst window management (Windows and Linux are lightyears ahead).
    I like Mac OS. The system where to make the mouse work normally you need to search for 3rd party solutions.
    I am using Windows and Mac OS. Mac OS is more consistent in terms of design and overall UI experience. But Windows is superior in terms of productivity.
    I am really waiting for Snapdragon X Elite. I hope that it will be the reason to switch back to PC.

      MacOS Windows management is a complete joke
      Basically if you can't find a third party app to fix it you are screwed
      Also MacOS has terrible support for monitors as well

      @@vlcthefish The "thing" that's missing is snapping, but that's solved with Rectangle.
      Other than that, Mac is far ahead. Usually people just haven't bothered to get familiar with Mac's "way" of doing things.
      You can't make a real split screen in Windows, only resize two windows next to each other.
      With Mac, you can both move windows next to each other natively (option + green button or window-menu) or add "Split-Screen 2 apps" Shortcut from Shortcuts gallery or use Rectangle etc. or set them in split screen mode, so full-screening content respects it's side.
      You can't drag and drop stuff through task view.
      On Mac, swipe up with 3 fingers while dragging. You can even use mouse and trackpad at the same time. Or keyboard shortcuts, including spacebar as click.
      You can't click while dragging stuff to and from windows
      On Mac, you can press spacebar or force click the trackpad.
      To move a window to another virtual desktop, on windows, you open a taskview, right click on a window, choose move to another window, choose the desktop from a menu.
      On Mac, you drag the window to the side of the screen. Or to top and drop it to any desktop, or press ctrl+arrow to switch desktop while holding the window.
      You can't drag and drop stuff to another virtual desktop.
      With Mac, you can many different ways. Just swipe with 3 fingers, use keyboard shortcut, Mission Control, hold over Dock icon, use Hot Corners, drag to side of the screen...
      On Windows, you must move window from the top bar
      Mac lets you both resize and drag window from every side. Perpendicular moves, parallel resizes.
      On Windows, you can only minimize or maximize.
      Mac let's you minimize, maximize, fullscreen, hide.
      Window let's you drag the "splitter" in the middle to resize both windows at the same time.
      That's something Mac can't do ons desktop. It does do it in Split Screen mode.
      Other than the snapping layouts, Windows resizing is very limited. It let's you drag a side and maximize the window, but that's pretty much it.
      Mac lets you maximize by double clicking top bar, or option double clicking a corner, but you can also auto-resize to a screen border by double clicking any side or corner, option let's you also mirror movement. For example, you can resize to fill top and bottom of a window by option-doubleclicking top or bottom. Shift let's you keep the current shape of the window. Good for media-related windows.
      For developers, the windows are more limited on Windows. For example, on Arc browser, the browser cannot have the uniform thin look on Windows.
      On Mac, developers can make their own implementations if you want. Like Opera GX on Mac has the window buttons on side of the window to maximize vertical browsing space.
      In fact, even if you're not a developer, you can use Apple's Shortcuts app to create your own advanced Window management scripts without actually scripting, by using drag & drop blocks like "move window" and "resize window" in Shortcuts app. For example, I've made a shortcut that sets 4 last active windows next to each other.

      @@eclipticpath Seems to me that you're coming from "laptop" point of view. MacOS is great when using as a pure laptop, its when you connect to a monitor and mouse, thats is when MacOS completely shits its bed.
      I have been using MacOs for about 3 years, and its still very hard to image that somebody would take MacOS over Windows for desktop setups given you have experience with both systems.

    • @eclipticpath
      @eclipticpath Месяц назад

      @@Sinier940n I have Mac Mini & Ultrawide monitor, trackpad on left hand, mouse on right. I don't have a Macbook, but I can imagine MacOS is very good for laptop users, so I'm sure you're right. But on desktop too, on Windows, it's not possible for me to put Resolve on left and make a video go full screen on right, cause windows doesn't have split screen mode. It's not possible to use trackpad and mouse at the same time. It's not possible to maximize vertical space on browsers because windows on Windows don't let me hide the top bar etc...
      The thing is, for most "issues" on Mac, I can find an answer like "install Rectangle", "disable this setting" etc, so I can do stuff "the Windows way" if I want to, but I can not do stuff "the Mac way" on Windows. On Windows, getting the file from File Explorer must be done with alt tabbing. And I can do that on Mac too. But if I happen to have my hand on trackpad, I can also swipe to Finder, choose the file and swipe back. You can't do that on Windows. Though, PowerToys etc. does bring some more functionality, so with some tweaking and extra apps, Windows can be very good too.
      Usually, people who think MacOS can't be used with desktops just haven't learned an efficient workflow and are using 3rd party mouse/keyboard but haven't set up any way to use any of Mac's navigation capabilites. They full-screen an app and think they're stuck cause they don't know they could slide between the apps or peek into desktop at any time. So for less tech-savvy people, I'd definitely recommend Windows. Although Mac is super versatile, its desktop and window management system is MUCH more complicated. I tried using Linux's AwesomeWM and I couldn't use it at all. It's even more complicated but that doesn't mean it's shitty. It just means I don't know how to use it efficiently.

    uninstalling apps isn't 'that easy' just like on windows you need a piece of third party software to cleanly uninstall software. On windows it is 'geek uninstaller' and on macos it is 'app cleaner'

    My thoughts after watching the entire video:
    using Mac as non power user (not using shortcuts ) is actually harder and less intuitive than Linux not to mention Windows.
    While Windows suffers from lack of customization and power user friendliness, Mac OS actually comes a lot closer than I thought to Linux in that regard.
    Sadly both Mac and Linux don't natively run as much apps as Windows (Linux can't run Office and some games, while Mac Os doesn't run most), of course it's not their fault, as Windows has more than 90% market share.

    MacOS is terrible for Windows management. It's basically a OS designed to work best on a laptop with trackpad. You get into trouble once you deviate from that into using a mouse with a large monitor and even worse is multiple monitors.
    Typically the response from the Apple cult is you are using it wrong and you need to go back to Windows or Linux. The response from the reasonable Apple users will tell admit your issues are very legit and offer some help as in using third party apps to fix these issues when available(such as Moom to fix Windows snapping/Forklife to fix the terrible Finder, Betterdisplay to try and fix MacOS terrible monitor support). Even with all of these apps you are still dealing with a OS that simply is not designed to work well outside of the laptop with trackpad. But remember Macbooks are where Apple makes by far most of their money for their computer sales. Mac Studio/Mac Mini/Mac Pro are a fraction of their laptop sales.

      It's puzzling that RUclips is flooded with lengthy "Switched to Mac" videos, praising the build quality and integration etc.., yet curiously overlooking the fact that MacOS is essentially unusable as a desktop operating system.
      Bought my M1 Macbook 3 years ago, im not new to the OS, i know the shortcuts, i love it for what it is, but it could never replace my windows machine for work.
