Seeing them in Philly. I was going to see them March 22 2000 in NY and the broke up March 20 it was devastating. I hope they play their whole discography
Man, love this song. Never got to see them before they broke up, but I have seen Doughty a couple times solo, luckily before he stopped playing the SC stuff. Reading his book now which caused me to go out and find some old live stuff. Have to agree he looks ridiculously skinny here and probably strung out. Glad for the stuff they put out and that he's still doing great music
Holy God! Thank you so much for uploading this. I didn't discover Soul Coughing until mid-2000s. I was alive when this was happening, and....watching something else.
So perfectly have you written my experience. I went to NYC early in the 2000s and heard this in a web cafe on New Amsterdam. I asked who they were... the server said who they were... then told me they were already broken up. I was gutted. I went and bought everything. Soul Coughing will always be the soundtrack to NYC for me because of that. I've since seen him live solo about a dozen times, he's always great value, with or without a backing band. Like you, I was busy listening to other things... and in England I never got to hear about them until it was too late.
Neil Biggin Very interesting, because I discovered them in my friend's car a month before I moved to Brooklyn, so that chunk of my life is also synchronistic with their wonderful sounds. Rock and roll. Can you recommend anything he recorded as just Mike Doughty? Everything I've heard of that has left me wanting. But I have only dabbled.
Dead Matlack He's done a lot of grea solo stuff. When he plays live it's a real mix of SC and his solo material too. For starters. I would recommend " I Hear The Bells", " Unsingable Name" and "Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well". For something very SC, try "Busting Up A Starbucks". I hear the Bells is the perfect pop song.
Dead Matlack Anything from Skittish/Rockity Roll is awesome! Also, his new album Stellar Motel has really grown on me. The best music always does and I would rate his as among the best.
I got to see these guys at 1st ave in Minneapolis in 97. Went to 2 of the 4 nights they played there. Still best concert that I have seen. Wish I could have gone to all 4. Thanks for introducing me to these guys cooter RIP
Thanks so much for the clip. I love these guys so much and I never got to see them live. I had tickets to my dream concert, Soul Coughing and Morphine, in 1999, but a few weeks before, Mark Sandman died on stage in Italy, the tour was canceled, and the next year Soul Coughing broke up. So sad. I wish they would do a reunion tour.
Morphine is an AWESOME band. I've always loved Soul Coughing and Morphine in the same way, even though they sound nothing like each other I relate the two of the together. Soul Coughing is still my favorite of the 90's, but I'll have to check out Afghan Whigs.
I was once high at an Our Lady Peace concert. And at a deftones concert. And at a Korn concert. And at a Primus concert. And at a Weezer concert. And at a Placebo concert. And at a Metallica concert. Wasn't high at the Papa Roach concert. Wasn't at the Powerman 5000 concert, either...
@@rgfdg4y46 agreed. I love this song. I just didn’t realize it was the first single from Irresistible Bliss as I never heard it on the radio and have never seen that single.
meedily I'd be willing to give my best attempt to humbly change your opinion on that. What is it that you like most about SC? Their experimental qualities? Their feel-good yet passionate vibe? What do you like best? Answer me that, and perhaps I can give you a few better songs. I feel you in the sense that I prefer SC over MD solo however there are totally some noteworthy tracks of Doughty's that could be comparable to what he did in SC. I wouldn't dare feed you any of his recent garbage. It's been getting worse progressively, I'll admit it (his current weekly drip.fm tracks are almost un-listenable) but there are some from his solo days that are actually really great.
Max Aronow In a nutshell, they were much more experimental. Not every single intro was just some played out acoustic riff. He was "forced" to collaborate with SC and that actually had a much better impact on the result. Have you heard his "reimagined" SC re-release? Nothing but lame-ass loops and cliche rhythm hand riffs and it sounds extremely homogeneous and unimaginative. He took Unmarked Helicopters (one of my fav SC songs) and laid a giant steaming turd all over it. He's an egomaniac who puts his pride above his art and I have absolutely no respect for that.
meedily Believe me, I feel that. I tried reaching out to Doughty a few times and he's actually blocked me across most social networks. He's an ass. If you don't fit a certain mold, he doesn't want you liking his music, even though we are who pays his rent... in the few times I have reached out to the others, they were all very chill (especially Mark above all. He's so humble.) I do, however, greatly enjoy Doughty's solo music, and I separate the music from the artist in this case. I wouldn't recommend you anything from really recent, as you said, it's trash. Everything that came before 2012's The Flip is Another Honey (sans Dubious Luxury.... shudder. That's his worst release yet) is pretty good in my opinion.
@@maxaronow712 So you have never actually met or spoken with Mike Doughty, and yet you have the audacity to call him an ass just because he allegedly “blocked” you on social media?! How do you even know it was MD himself and not his page manager? He is constantly making new music, playing live, writing, collaborating, experimenting with new & innovative ideas in his music, etc. That does not mean in any way, shape or form he only “wants certain fans” that fit a particular mold (whatever that means) listening to his music! It is beyond the pale and frankly, it is wrong for you to be projecting the way YOU feel MD “feels” regarding his fan base. Having met & spoken with the man myself, he was nothing but very kind & gracious. If the other members of SC answered you back online, it’s probably because they actually had the time to do so. Because what have they accomplished since SC broke up? I personally have no idea. But I do know it is not cool to project some contrived notion about an artist and release it into the universe while claiming to be a fan of his work. His latest album, “Ghost of Vroom 2”, is incredible & reminiscent of SC style and yet sounds completely unique in its own right.
One of the coolest and most underrated bands of the 90's. Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Almost every Soul Coughing video I see has 1 dislike and I'm convinced it's Mike Doughty himself
I picture him somewhere bearded and beered.
THEY ARE BACK!! 👏
This damn band shoulda been way more damn popular. Dammit.
THEY’RE BACK
Seeing them in Philly. I was going to see them March 22 2000 in NY and the broke up March 20 it was devastating. I hope they play their whole discography
and they still kinda suck tbh but in a way you can still enjoy if you’re willing to try lol
I know but why in the world are they not singing Soundtrack to Mary WTF
@@proyectosfamiliares805yo I was at the philly show! Had a blast, their music was meant to be heard IRL
Please come out West on your tour!

I was alive and sitting in front of the TV recording it on VHS . He gave Conan a kiss on the cheek after the performance.
Soul Coughing opened for Jeff Buckley @ First Ave MPLS, MN. One of the greatest concerts I have ever witnessed, and I've been to too many to remember.

They were so good. Happy we have these clips of them.
Awww, his green guitar!!❤️
Ruby Vroom was my favorite 😍!
Doughty is really killin it here.
Zero dislikes, that's what I like to see
i saw these guys in mpls that year as well (97). mysteriously good live shows. also saw them at cedar fest mpls 95. very funky band.

Your wish has been granted
@Bmoregon two of my favorites bands easily... 16HP and Soul Coughing. HUGE influences!

I like soul coughing way better. Morphine is cool, but it's not as funky.
i got into both bands the same Summer - you're in good company
Love it! Great VHS-rip. Kudos!
Jackie Chan
Once I was high in a Soul Coughing concert .
Mehmet Pinarci me too. Later this month ill be high at a mike doughty concert as he plays soul coughing songs

Ever listen to El Oso while rolling?
I hope you feel better later on 💗
they were a great band
Its crazy how good they were live. You'd think the Soul Coughing sound would be studio only
Wow
Such a random song for them to perform on Conan
This is the perfect type of soul Coughing song to play.
@@rgfdg4y46 agreed. I love this song. I just didn’t realize it was the first single from Irresistible Bliss as I never heard it on the radio and have never seen that single.
you're awesome! thanks!
Couldnt agree more - Morphine was incredible
wow...this must have been when doughty was pretty strung out...look how skinny he is.
"fawn, faw, fawn, fawn"
It's pretty close to the CD!
I hereby nominate Doughty as the best rhythm guitarist of all time.
First time I have seen this!?!?!! Where have you been hiding?
***** Me 2 love it.
Memphis
Dear god man what a line up!
Looked doped af
@71savages Soul Coughing and Afghan Whigs - no doubt!
That dude at the start though
from a ben stiller movie. I wonder how he gets those spot gigs...
I was at that show...it was really great. Sorry you missed it.
They dropped the needle on Super Bon Bon for “Last Dance” episode 8 whereas band leader Michael Doughty kicked his habit altogether
was that JAckie Chan @ 00:1 ?
Sure was!
by this time there is only one dislike on it and it's probably MD's work
What kind of guitar is he using here?
fender coronado
this song is like kurt cobaine
That's what drugs 'll do to ya
I do not know about the soundtrack to Mary, but the soundtrack on this video is kind of screwed.
So much better than his boring ass solo stuff.
