First heard this as a kid on a particular Boomerang commercial on Cartoon Network. Loved it almost as much as I loved the classic cartoons in the commercial. Got older and discovered late '90s alternative rock, leading to my re-discovery of Circles and Soul Coughing. Bravo! Amazing stuff.
just now getting around to giving this band a listen... first listen i was like this is dumb and annoying... 2nd listen i'm like wtf this shit is pretty unique i kinda like, 3rd listen i get it.
why does every fan think THEIR favorite band is some kind of one off legendary musical sensation the like's we've never seen before or never see again. it's like when a singer dies young and people suddenly want to act like they were some kind of legendary musical phenomenon. so tedious and only speaks to the self centered atittute of people, where they think THEIR favorite music is so more special than the music other people enjoy. it's just music. if it's your favorite, then great. but stop acting like it was somehow special in the world. that's a lazy fantasy people want to believe to make their taste in music seem high brow and sophisticated.
I got to see them when i was younger at a benefit show my neighbor put together for one of our friends that got hurt playing Rugby back when this album came out, it was soooo damn awesome. They were super cool NY cats
It’s honestly a wonderful thing. Their sound in general just makes me happy because I found a category I like. I knew rap wasn’t my thing and I only sorta liked hip-hop, but then I found this. I knew I was a rock oriented person but the rhythm had to be there, and this band captivated it. Now I dunno if there’s a band that’s blended the categories into a perfect mess of spitting poetic lyrics whilst still keeping the perception of “coolness” by being lame (unorthodox) by substituting the electronic influence with the instrumentation and supplementing it’s lack thereof with live sampling. TL;DR: They’re cool to me because they’re trendsetters by way of being weird. That makes me content with being lame amongst my peers that dig rap music or pop that’s oversaturated in the main stream. So much so that I wanna replicate it myself someday.
From reading his memoir apparently the most expensive guitar he had but the worst to play...strings always popping out. Glad to see him playing it though. Super cool looking indeed!
For the past year I’ve been trying to find rationality behind it, like “Who do I blame? Who’s fault is it?” But I just gotta accept it, they just can’t cut it as band members. Great musicians, but it’s clear Soul Coughing was an anomaly that was a miracle to last.
@@crudecube Exactly. From personal experience I know being in a band with someone changes the dynamic of the friendship/relationship with the other members. Sometimes, like in the case of R.E.M., they are able to stick it out and have a long existence without much drama. But then you have bands like Soul Coughing where four seemingly disparate personalities came together to make records. It didn't help that the other members were 7, 8 years older than Mike Doughty at the time.
Thumbs up if Cartoon Network brought you here.
Just saw them play this live the other day still so amazing!
Brooklyn Steel? Great show....they sounded amazing.
@@shredit_nyc I went to the show at 9:30 club in DC it was awesome.
@@kaleidoscopesthirdeyevizions I’m sure they were just as amazing.
@@shredit_nyc definitely love this band
The skat man Mike Doughty .... American Treasure right here folks

Same as my kids. When they heard this they were watching Cartoon Network. They were babies. Memories 🥰
it took me over 10 years to grow into the 3 albums of this band. and still, these guys are in a league of their own.....

@@Jaymes400 who hurt you?
Wow. I've loved this album for years. This is the first time that I've seen what the band looks like. Still one of my favorite CDs!
Having the same experience, now... I've been listening to them, since 2002... and just now seeing them play live.
I got to see them when i was younger at a benefit show my neighbor put together for one of our friends that got hurt playing Rugby back when this album came out, it was soooo damn awesome. They were super cool NY cats
Still to this day one of my favourite bands
Drum and bass music on the next level. Alot of the electronic bass drop trap music was influenced by this. "El Oso" was so ahead of it's time!!!!
been saying this for years!

Really good stuff. All member right on point for this one.
That ol boom bap
If you like one song off El Oso, chances are you'll like the whole thing. Great piece.
Masters of groove. I love them.
I love Soul Coughing!
I knew of this band and was surprised when my tap teacher (it was an adult class) brought this CD in for us to tap too. It was awesome!
One of my favorite bands from the 90’s!!
My GOD this is great!!!!
Late 90's geek jam right here.
I've always really liked this band for .... Ever.....
Pretty much Mike's breakup song to the band

Reading Mike's 2020 memoir where he writes about this performance ... good stuff!
Have you read his book- “The book of drugs”? So good
God that big body green guitar is gorgeous!
From reading his memoir apparently the most expensive guitar he had but the worst to play...strings always popping out. Glad to see him playing it though. Super cool looking indeed!
@tfraser that's really interesting! It's like my absolute favorite shade of green. I'd keep it around too even if it were faulty.
Awesome.
Where is Yuval Gabay now?
Bass line on piano would be fun to learn. Anyone out there help with that?
It looks like they're having fun here, but they were all in hell.
I heard what went on Behind the Scenes. They sure did make good music, but it was extremely fucking toxic
toxic? ,What do you mean by that?
DarkelX996 The band members behind the scenes we’re really toxic to each other, they didn’t get along at all

Yes
You are correct.
who, huh?

Boom bap was a thing long before this
This songs so great. Reminds me of being 17 😐

Yes sir, and I will say it proudly! Not one mention or glorification of drugs, gang, crime, murder, sex, or N-word here.
