- CarID was kind enough to send me a DVD player from Boss to install into my 2001 Honda Odyssey. Originally, I had thought it would be a pretty straightforward installation. It turned out to be a bit more than that. The headliner had to come out several times to make sure that the right measurements were made for the mounting bracket. The mounting bracket also needed a custom installation in order to make it work. Not to mention getting 'creative' with the electrical hook ups. Truth is, this is typical with installing aftermarket accessories like this. You need to be prepared for anything.
In this video I walk you though the steps I took to overcome these challenges. Hopefully it will help you if you are also wanting to install a DVD player of this type.
Thanks again to CarID. Here's a link to their site: www.carid.com

Hey Eric, l've a 2007 Odyssey EX-L with DVD in it and how to replace the Odyssey original DVD to this big one?
Smashing job eric :-), there is more than one way to get the holes in the right place, but yours worked smashing :-))
The things you do to make a quality video Eric. I hate those things but appreciate your drive to show us how. Keep it up!(fairmont video hype!!)
Elmano Locko 1 - Remove old DVD2 - Follow this video.
i heard if you spin the drill bit in reverse it will cut stuff like carpet and that padding
4:44 "I may not take it all the way out." does exactly that puts it on the roof no less🤣🤣
Im glad you showed using that 'tap a fuse'. Im planning on using them when I add heated seats to my truck. Thanks!!
People say he should have just gotten a ipad and use that but did you think about how safe it would be to leave in the car ? thats right no unless you take it out and in everytime this is the next best thing its mounted on so they would have to do all this work just to remove it and run off with it i think this is better since it adds a more factory look to the car
Just saw the installation video and wow it's hard work but thanks for the education video Eric.....thumbs up.
That seemed to be a big job, nice work Eric!
I'm always waiting for new vids from EricTheCarGuy .
Cheers to that guy that says he installs them every day without removing headliner. Wicked good quality.
The sharpie worked ok I guess, but what I would have done differently is install the mounting screws into the roof bracket, put some sort of paint on the heads of them, then mock the headliner into place. The paint from the mounting screws would then transfer to the back of the headliner giving you your locations to drill.
Brian W Nice idea. I'll have to try that next time.
no need for for paint, just press the head-liner against them and it will mark the position :)
Yeah, that would work too
If you're worried about a rattle inside the DVD player I would rap the ends of the RCA cables with electrical tape and that should keep them from rattling.
Ya gotta have a magic screw pile in every shop! Great vid Eric.
Good video Eric. Thanks for sharing!
Nice video, good work! Always great to see creativity put into little mods like this. Not too many mechanics will give such detail but I'm glad you do. Always look forward to the next uploads :)
I bought the same Boss DVD player to install in my sisters car and remembered watching this. She has a Acura MDX 2006, which is nearly similar to Erics install here. Too bad you didn't show how to remove the headliner cause that was a pain. Installed a Android stereo as well and wired audio and video to and from both devices, plus a reverse camera. That took me at lest 3 full days to install it all.
When I was installing factory DVD players, we had to cut a hole in the headliner and mount the plate. Also, why not pull the radio and make your power connections?
Awesome. Nothing goes like the instructions say. I'm looking into replacing the factory "RES" rear entertainment system with an aftermarket. I'm 99% sure, after watching this, my kid can just play on the phone.
Looks MINT! I thought newer headliners were fiberglass, which makes me think it would hold up alright to having a dvd player hang from it. Then again you do have kids, which tend to be hard on things. Haha. I was cringing when you were lining up the template. I remember drilling out holes to mount a roof rack system and thinking to myself I hope these all line up.
What a nice van! I'm jealous.
Your ground is good. You should always keep ground wires short and connect them directly to the body of the car. That will always have less resistance than a wire to the ground terminal of the battery. Don't run grounds to the battery. You dun good with the ground, just the way it is.
The 12V constant wire should be red! Other people might work on your van someday. It is irresponsible to use non-standard wire colors. It would be best to run it directly to the positive battery terminal and fuse it within 12 inches of the battery. The 12V switched wire should go to the accessory wire from the ignition. That wire should be yellow! Also, solder your splices into the wires directly or use scotchlocks to attach the wires. Don't "redneck rig" your power wires to the fusebox. Even if someone sent you a fancy adapter, it's not the right way to do it and you know it.
While you had the headliner out, you should have run RCA cables to the radio area. Don't depend on the crappy FM modulator.
Nice Channellock crimper! Those crimps work great. I've never had one fail. You don't need to solder everything.
Eric, you'll always be our hero for life, whatever. :D
you should convert all your interior lighting to LED. would take a lot of amp load off of the circuits and then you can tie in whatever you want.
Good job assuming you'll need a stronger mounting surface such as the cross members.
Glad you got it to work. It was good you didn't have to call Boss tech support. I have a head unit from them with a little 3 inch screen on it. I can't get tech support to help me out at all with my question on it. They answered me once and I asked a couple follow up question and they never respond. I would not use them again passed on there very bad tech support
I've used the add-a-circuit many times.
Nice one! Great video to watch.
Pretty clean install!
Very nice work nice installation
Best video thus far!
Nice install!
awesome vid eric ! thanks !
Great video, very informative, good job...
When it like that hanging bolts with 3 nuts. All thread bolt cut to length. long as you tighten it it's stable as 4 boxed legs
Thanks for the video. How do you setup the audio via FM transmitter?
Great video Eric, dragging that headliner in and out must have been fun. Drilling into the headliner would have been the most nerve-wrecking part for me also. I would be SO pissed If I made a hole in the wrong spot!
Maybe, someday when I can afford a shop, and better video equipment, (and the know-how to edit the videos) I'll be able to get free stuff too... lol
LOVE your vids Eric! Would love to work along side you!
Wow you wanna do what, and at his shop..??.. "Work alongside with Eric, I don't think So".. I guess you no clue as to how impatient Eric is around the work shop.. if you do something incorrect around him.. You will pay nearly with a body part of yours....
Eric, you could later change the bulbs in the DVD player to match up with the dome lights :)
Screw halogen bulbs!
Brilliant video chief! Thanks!
Did this a few years ago in my dads Astro. Trick it out with a custom input jack, 300w power inverter for games, and off air ant for the car.
It doesnt get any use now. Can't pickup HD signals, dont own anymore DVD's, and games are all not in HD.
Still looks good tho!
Wish I new were to buy your electrical probe with the alarm what model and manufacturer is that tester your using eric
I sure hope that's a good quality dvd player and display after going through all the trouble to get it in there. If it burns out and breaks in a week I'd be pissed.
You are the man, Eric
I see that dvd player has an HDMI port on the driver side, can you plug in lets say a laptop or gaming console to it? awesome video by the way Eric!
This is seriously hard work
hey Eric . . I just bought a dvd player flipdown. what wiring will I need to get it to run thru to the circuit board. I have a Nissan Altima 2013
16:29 Wasn't that black box on the red wire an inline fuse?
Just to get an estimate how much would you charge to install one of these DVD players
Eric,
Big fan. Love your videos and what you provide for your viewers. I'm not sure if you did this, but here is a suggestion: Bench test car audio electronics before committing to installation. I learned that lesson the hard way. Thank you sir.
Note to self and others.
Remove metal bracket from dvd player, place to desire location with Headliner still in the vehicle take black marker put dots on headliner for drilling through. Then remove headliner do a mock up install with either piece of fiberglass or piece of scrap metal laying around.
Rule of thumb measure twice drill once.
What
Nicely done .
Does the ground have to be the same thickness as the power wire? For example if I use the 12 gauge ad a circuit and run 12 gauge power wire from it to the unit, can I use the much smaller ground wire coming out of the unit without hurting anything?
I install these everyday and I've never taken the head liner down. I was blowen away that you went though all of that too get it in there.
How do you do it CarPhonix?
HOLY SHIT CarPhonix, what are you doing here?? BMP!
I've done this a few times at work, never had to remove the liner. Just used the mount for the dome light.
PS: heard a few horror stories of guys drilling holes in roofs.
How would you go with wiring? Hardly any room with some cars which have a dome light the size of a small mobile phone.
Bobman84 Wiring would be fished between the roof and lining. Tons of space. We would also run AV cables too.
Could you suggest some type of support for a heavy flip down DVD player with a sunroof?
thanks Eric!!!
Well done Eric, where do you get those wire strippers from? Bloody good vid. Johnno
John Kinnane Link in the description along with the other tools used in the video.
Cool install! I found it easier to add circuits to my truck by building a separate diy fuse/relay box. Amazon always has excellent deals on fuse holders, fuses, and 30 amp relay connectors (relays included)! I've spliced from the hot switch wire of the ignition and had zero issues.
Brian Piper I'm actually going to do that with the Fairmont. Thanks for the suggestion.
I have a 2005 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition. I just install a Jenson VX7020. The factory DVD player in the back is not working. Any ideas would be great thanks...
Man just get to the wiring of the thing, i like your videos so im watching till the end , but the only thing complicated to me about that project is the wires. I am an idiot with wires and elec.all i know is red to red and black to black after that im lost. Cool video though, i like em all.
how good are the 9V memory savers; compared to larger ones or more expensive ones?????
Great video
I have my Toyota sienna, dvd screen installed by a certified "tech " but it continuously drain the battery. so I unplugged it,whatcould have done wrong??
Hello man,I bought 2008 VAN Vw Touran i have almost same dvd player Boss.Everything is connected properly, but have no sound. Can u help me out ?
i use to solder, but crimp is just so much easier and if done right is just as good connection.
Me too, I prefer to use non insulated butt connectors and heat shrink for most of my connections.
Great tutorial video, tnx. for me it is the most unplesant part of our work to install stuff like that. They can't live without television, uh? Angry!
Note: when you install a power tap you must determine which side of the fuse panel is hot. This can be done with the fuse out and a tester. Then you install the tap with the fuse in it for only your new cut and make sure it works. Then install the original fuse. This prevents you getting the fuses in series with each other.
Glad I looked through the replies because I was going to say the same thing. If you grab the fused side for your "add-a-circuit" you've just added to the load of the original fuse.
I like to put toothpaste on holes I drill that need to be lined up to another surface. Push the two surfaces together and you have your hole markings....
Great idea!
Brian Piper It really does work well. You don't have to use toothpaste either. I find it does work better than other things I've tried though
NOOOOPE!! not doing all that🤣🤣🤣 amazing video!!!! By the way 👍👍👍
Open the screen and have someone hold it in the place your considering installing it, sit in the driver's seat and see how much the screen blocks your rear-view. Had a factory DVD on a Ford Freestar and it blocked too much of my view out the back window.
Great job
good video sir,. thanks
so great
Thank you I will do it for my 1996 Nissan quest when this van is modified
Nice video. Thanks
I would have used a ACC circuit.
good work.
Very cool, very hip!
hello i see last time someone left feedback i think but ,,, anyway ,,, i have the add a fuse line ,, but finding the power for dome lights i have the white and wire and blue but the others purple and another light blue so should i do the middle which is blue and looking at the add a fuse hard to find the fuse for rear wipers and i see that others say they never take the head liner down ,, I didn't take mine down,,, but love this video and i have the 2013 honda odyssey thanks but need some info...
I have a 2005 Uplander and I like to hook up my DVD player to this vehicle but how can I go about it because this other DVD entertainment center came from another hot highliner that was made for it and mine I don't have the wires that goes to it what can I do. !
I installed this DVD Player and everything is fine.. Now When I turned off the car and turn it on again. I have to go and turn the DVD manually even though I left it on. Is it normal? I know the DVD starts from where I left off without any problem. The Problem is that even if I'm in the HDMI Mode when I turn it off and on it would start on the DVD instead of the HDMI input. Also I have to turn it on with the remote or manually all the time. Any Suggestions?
I would have put crimpable blade connectors so you can un plug the wires from each other if you need to take it down
What other "pimp my ride" type videos do you have?
My dvd of 2007 Honda Pilot RES, does not work any more as it tries to be on and make some dvd loading noise. Kids does not use it any more as they moved on to tablet, how do I just turn it off? I tried to power off, but every time key on, it makes noise for 2/3 minutes like trying to load dvd...how do i remove it?
Very good job sir! Huge fan! Love watching your videos!
Eric, as a person who typically does the twist, solder, glue-heatshrink method, I have no problem with crimp connectors as long as they're done right and with the right tools. Most of the time people use pliers or a hammer, or they'll use crimping pliers, but they'll use the ones made for noninsulated crimp terminals and end up destroying or penetrating the insulation. Yours are dual purpose by the quick glance I got at them (and looking at the link) both insulated and noninsulated crimping terminals. A connection like that I have no problem with at all!
I don't think people say this enough but I really appreciate Cameraman Brian, He's really helped take your channel to a new level. Great work Eric, That install looks nearly factory. :)
Why didn't you use bullet connectors for the power/trigger/ground wires? It would make it easier if you ever have to remove it.
How to do the title:
Step 1: go to wal-mart
Step 2: find the radio head with popout screen and dvd player
step 3: buy
Step 4: Install said unit
Step 5: pop out said units screen and realize that it interferes with the shift selector.
Step 6: Go to Walmart and leave with beer instead of a refund because they don't let you return electronics.
Step 7: Drink Beer
Step 7: drinkkk anoathers
Step 8: get baseball bat and hit that mfer out of the park.
Step 11: wake up and have no regrets.

Hey Eric, i know this might not be the right video to be making this request, but would you be willing to do a video on valve stem seal replacement? I am working on a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse, with a 2.4L 4g64 engine. I do not plan on pulling the head and will be using the same technique shown in your valve spring removal video. However, it would be great to see how properly remove the seals, how to identify a failing seal, and how to properly install the new seals. I also have a somewhat persistent tick. While the rocker rails are off, it only makes sense to replace the lifters as well. Maybe you have done a video I haven't stumbled across yet, but there are several videos on youtube with different methods of bleeding the lifters; some people aren't bleeding them at all. What is your take on this? I already ordered the parts, so there is a good possibility the job will be done by the time you would be able to do such a video; however, it seems like a common job and a walkthrough from a trusted source would do us all well. Keep up the great work.
Were having a problem with the remote to the dvd player.
Seems to be giving out. How do we program a new one?
Brand Nitro TF
model # BMWx-15XGE
I'd be a little concerned with possible video interference caused by the wiper motor when it is engaged.
Don't ever drill into the cross members the way he has (perhaps why the video is cut), it's a sure fire way to go all the way through the roof panel on the other side.
Either mount the bit deep in the chuck or use self tapping screws that can't reach the skin
Would this work on my 2000 Toyota Sienna XLE??
Hi I have a question did you hook up the add circuit thin on a exist fuse for te acc ? And where did you get power for the constant one?
Where can i buy those exact wires that you used to connect it together? Did you used a 16 awg wire?
I was SHOCKED that you would drill steel overhead looking at it with NO safety glasses!
Nice vid
very nice Eric... people should be able to follow your helpful instructions on how to do this install.. thanks Eric... very helpful....
Why not just get and ipad or android tablet ?
DigitalYojimbo And just where are you going to mount it genius...
Por fin un vídeo bien hecho sobre la instalación de este equipo, gracias.
Very nice
Nice job, Eric! Very admirable work. Hopefully that piece of crap player lasts more than 6 months.
Not to be a jerk, but change your rubber gloves before you reinstall the head liner.
You got dirty finger marks on the liner.
Shame on YOU.
Other than that best install I have seen on RUclips so far.
Great video! I appreciate how you take the viewer through your thought process and troubleshooting steps. It looks like maybe more trouble than it's worth when you factor the versatility of a basic tablet. Glad I watched the video and found out. Thanks!
It's for multiple people to watch entertainment, what is one person suppose to hold a tablet above their head all the way to Florida?
