Those Marine's at the front gate deserve a medal for keeping thier cool through that whole experience, if you want the truth about this whole debacle, read Sneep's books.

Why would Nixon appoint an ambassador whose son had just died in the war. How could that ambassador keep a cold head and a pragmatic approach to his job. The loss of his son alone should have disqualified him to be ambassador specifically to Viet Nam.

This was a particularly dark scene in a war that was already a dark stain on the image and soul of the United States. They never had any intention of evacuating more than a small fraction of the South Vietnamese that they had promised asylum to. In the event, even most of that fraction got left behind because of the lack of proper planning and then mismanagement when it came to the crunch. They promised those people all kinds of things to get them to do what they wanted, and many, many did as they were asked, at great personal risk. Then they left them to the Communists. Fortunately for many (but, sadly, not all) , the Northern troops were not as arbitrarily vindictive as predicted. It wasn't exactly handshakes and hugs though. Leaving allies in the shit is beginning to become a habit for the USA.
