April 30, 2020, marks 45 years since the end of the Vietnam war, when Communist forces from the north captured Saigon, the capital of the democratic south. Michael Burr served in the US Air Force and was posted to Saigon in 1970, teaching English to members of Vietnam’s air force. He also had a camera with him and spent his free time taking thousands of photos of wartime Vietnam. Nearly five decades later, Burr returned to Saigon, renamed Ho Chi Minh City after the war, to visit his old living quarters, reminisce about old times and share his extensive photo collection with local people. The trip also proved to be an emotional experience, taking Burr back to an unforgettable time in his youth.

I went back a few years ago and was very glad to see how well the Vietnamese have done.
“Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.”
Sir... I'm one of the boat people...refugee in Indonesia...it will be a blessing if I could see more of your photos. My family after the war fled to France, Australia, and US.
Nice insight into modern Vietnam. Liked & subbed.
I find this really sweet and nostalgic, even though Im not an adult yet. Im from Vietnam, and i must say, aoi dai is now worn a lot less. Ive actually never seen staff wearing them im stores when i visit, but i do know they are worn by both men and women, usually when Tet comes, marriages, or any other event.
How has this not gotten more views??
Beautiful story thank you for sharing
Michael, that was just awesome, thank you for sharing it with me, I am going to share it on my page.
Thank you Michael, from another AFLS
I'm Vietnamese from Australia , everytime I go back its getting more westetnised. The new generation spends alot of time on internet and surprise to me the internet speed is faster then the internet speed in Australia
Westernized is a bad term, it develops more. Their culture and government develop, and their land develops.
Great video... ! Welcome-back . Vietnam will live forever, You can come here any time being welcomed
You’re awesome for sharing this thank you soo much ❤️❤️🥺
love this sort of stuff- well done, Louis
Thank you
Wonderful memoir!
Great photo and I would like you to post each one one of them on RUclips please. I would like to remind of my childhood in Vietnam. Thank you for your service Sir.
EDIT: Correction. The link below contains photos from Robert Landro. The post only briefly mentioned Michael so I got confused until I translated it. Sorry! But there's many pictures here.
I wanted to see more photos so I searched "Michael Burr Vietnam photos" (minus the quotes of course) and found a few things quite quickly.
The motherload of photos I found were on his Facebook: m.facebook.com/nguyen.chinh.589/albums/10210193180184207/

Wow what an amazing video, really well done. I’d love to see his photos of Saigon if they are available somewhere.
I do a bit of video of then and now in Vietnam aswell. Uploading a new video in a few days.
Great story from a great man. I wonder where the appartment building is located? Regards from the Netherlands
Did SCMP reupload because some of the comments, including mine is spot on?About how US should take responsibilities for spraying agent orange which still persists event through the Vietnamese victim children?
The US has. The US has been helping to cleanup around DaNang. Well, the monies. None of the victims get any. It’s a communist government.
Vu Le lol. How do you know? It’s funny because of the tax payers money in freedom land goes to government officials instead of roads which my state needs to fix badly and to the military, which it has a base on every continent.

They have the best military in the world best of luck from India 🇮🇳❤️🇻🇳
Not quite right, China objective was never to colonized Vietnam, China objective was to teach Vietnam a lesson that Soviet Union will not help Vietnam when China invade them, that objective the Chinese achieved but to be fair China second objective was fail, which is to deter Vietnam occupying Cambodia, and to be completely fair I agree even if China want to occupy Vietnam, China will fail.

Wow all that old photo shoot at 1970 are treasure now.
Filipinos did not joined America during Vietnam in fact the Philippines saves thousands Vietnamese refugees in our country after the war..the Philippines sent military, nurses, engineers and teachers to Vietnam to build hospital, schools to raise them up
umm ... thank
yup you help the puppet regime in the south , the people you help are the people that work with American and befor it the French , if anything the French and American and those traitor should thanks you , not us Vietnamese in Vietnam who fought for our independence from external power
PHILCAGV(Phil Civic Action Group Vietnam) was deployed in Tay Nihn province not as a combat force rather conduction civil military operations ie constructing schools, road building, medical missions.though some interdictions with the VCs but not too often 🇵🇭
That was 1966-1969🇵🇭
actually not really what u said. The veteran of The South Vietnam went to Philippines when they lost North Vietnam, but that time Philippines didn't helped South Vietnam until American agreed to change the VNCH flag to America flag. The odds was all the battle ship of VNCH must be given to Philippines army :)) . That's fact bro. Anyway I luv Philippines now, we live for the present & future, not for the past. Vietnam here got some problems about South China Sea.
The faces in the photos are super trippy
Awesome content and cinematography but was the audio sound effects done by an intern SCMP ? 😂
Shame for making fun of your time in Saigon, drugs, women etc….how about real soldiers in field
USA needs to invest more in Vietnam. Both countries are trading allies!
???
China does a better investment job. In doubt ? go for: McKinsey Global Institute Jun 2019 China & The World Full Rpt.
USA is the best at Destruction, Induce waves of refugees & then Crying out for "Human rights", "Freedom", "Democracy" ... all the shirts you know.

What’s the song in the beginning’s name?
Why go back to Vietnam it totally changed plus 70 percent of the population wasnt even born when the war was raging.
The most disgusting REMF story I have seen and making humor of the plight of Vietnamese children in a bad situation showing no pride in service and this REMF joined the military. Simply Disgusting as the majority of military servicemen and women drafted and enlisted severed with pride and honor in a terrible war.
People are amazing, governments are cruel...
People are amazing, government are amazing at helping people and anti-Communist who are Pro-Imperialism are cruel
Criminals like to revisit their crime scenes.
hes not a criminal, blame the u.s. government.
40 years after the war, but seem nothing change!
Wrong Vietnam has reconciled and lobbies America to address the wounds. Slowly, US will have no choice but to compensate Vietnam because it was a war we should not have started. US vets are haunted forever but there is chance that Washington to one day will fully reconnect the damage
@@ErikPT The only thing I would give Vietnam is this 🖕.
@@ErikPT US didn't start the war, read a little history please do not base your history on movies.

American democracy 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

France: People said I surrender in every war but I colonized Vietnam
And then, still surrendered as their tradition.
And then France got humiliated and surrender

Now that we have defeated all our enemies, let's focus on capitalism. 😂
My family lost everything in the South because the American Forces abandoned the south.

D Sanders Yessss, I love South Vietnam and the Republic of Vietnam. I was born in Saigon in June 1975, about 2 months after the war ended. Communist Vietnam is an evil regime and it needs to be abolished. Bring Republic of Vietnam back ❤️🥰❤️
@@lilylovesitaly3932 not likely
@@lilylovesitaly3932ry to abolish our Communist government if you want to bring Republic of Vietnam back to enslave people just like the French colonists did to help the US Imperialism, cowards, you can't fight against the people government who fight against Imperialism so easily
@@lilylovesitaly3932just give up your hope on putting fake Democracy in Vietnam, you can't beat an anti-imperialists regime that can't be defeated
Certainly film that could be shown in Hanoi during the war. Surprised not to see Jane Fonda supporting her hero's. Absolutely no pictures of the documented 32,000 assassination's of South Vietnamese villagers. Filmed by those with a predetermined bias that the war was bad American foreigners and poor brave fighting soldiers from the north. Same reporters disappeared during the aftermath of the war during the atrocities, reeducation camps, and boat people. No film on the politicians who turned their backs on the troops and encouraged the likes of John Kerry who characterized the troops as murdering innocents in the style of Genghis Khan. I was there, I won't forget what this country (the US) and the media did as well as the politicians and many of the people of the US. Put it aside and go on, but never forget.
it was an evil war, hope you can come to terms with it & find peace and healing
For most, who lived at various camps, there is no building to return to see. It was always a beautiful country, and the Americans were trying to save it from communism. And it is capitalism which has revived it today.
D Storm no country other than North Korea is full communist
How exactly did you tried to "save" us? Spraying agent orange? Bimbing cities? Massacring villages by villages?
No, we did not need your "saving", we never did.
No America was afraid of losing its position. The war should not happened: ruclips.net/video/MIJfV2cTUHc/видео.html
classic America brain: it's okay to commit war crimes (mass bombings, spraying toxic chemicals, massacring villages) as long as we're "saving" them from communism
They needed no saving at all, America's involvement was unnecessary from the getgo. Americans always love to paint themselves as heroes, it's a complete joke...
