You can use waterproof varnish on top of it, but just make sure you are not applying paints & varnish to those areas of mug which comes in contact with the mouth while drinking.

You can but not sure how much durable it will be!! may be if you can use waterproof varnish then it might work... just make sure you don't apply them on the drinking area of mug which comes in contact with mouth.
