  • In this video we repair a Razor E100 Scooter. It needed new batteries, had issues with the motor controller and we had to order a new charger. The young lady it belonged to lets us know it has been working well since repair. Hopefully the information helps if anyone else has issues with the E100 or similar scooter. They are just really neat little scooters and I really hate seeing them thrown out with years of enjoyment left in them....

    These new are around $150 so an investment of $30 or so in new batteries and $14 for a charger is still well worth the investment, especially when you factor in the happiness value. I found 5 of these at a yard sale for free. They had all been stored outside and the chains and other metal parts were rusty in bad shape. Got the first one cleaned up and applied 24v direct to the motor and confirmed the motor was good. Just waiting for batteries and a charger. Hopefully I'll have at least a couple of grandsons flying around on them soon. Thanks for the time in putting the video together. Nice job and great reference.

Right now i charged the batts one at 14 volts and the other is barely keeping charge so im using a tender to treat it hopefully it gets revived. When i gave the motor power it worked but when i used the batteries it only clicked by the control board so i hope that was a dead battery not controller and i hope the batteries are good

    I know this is old, but the throttle won't send voltage to motor until you kick push the scooter to 3kph....safety feature I guess.
    So putting the scooter on blocks, testing by pushing throttle will never spin motor even if there's nothing wrong with it.
    EDIT: Just hadn't got that far in video.

      @ThriftyToolShed  3 года назад

      I used a Drok DC-DC Buck Converter. I have a video on it as well, but any supply could test motor really. Even if you careful use the new battery with jumpers. Remember with the controller you do have to push to start. I guess for safety, these do not start up as soon as you press the throttle. They are called kick scooters but it did surprise me how hard I had to sling it to start up while testing. The first few time I thought it wasn't working, but I just did not give it enough motion before I hit the throttle to make it go! If still not working, make sure the throttle switch is activating the controller! Best of luck to ya!

      I don't know for sure, but with Lead acid batteries it can be tricky. It could be dropping really low under a load. Most lead acids will fail in this manner, with a faulty cell the voltage drops severely under any load. A voltage check alone usually doesn't tell the whole story.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  4 года назад +2

      Well I no longer have this because I gave it back to the little girl. After cleaning the corrosion I had no issues with this one. It's fairly simple, it gets a contact from the accelerator switch and if you kick start it will pick up motors voltage generated and pull the relay in. If you need to verify motor is ok, you can put the voltage across the motor to test rotation. Which issue are you seeing?

    Hi. Thank you for such detail video on restoring of this scooter. I am not good on fixing up a scooter like this. I have one exact model like this in the video. It's a lot newer which is made in 2018. But when I plug the Charger which I bought it through Amazon. When it plugged in to the three prong connector in the side of the scooter. It lights up in green in the AC adapter indicator. It's supposed showing in Red when the battery is being charged. I spin the rear wheel and turn the throttle same time. It's not turning like you showed in this video. What do you suggest for the next diagnostic to be performed. Thanks.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  3 года назад

      I would check actual battery voltage if possible and make sure it is ok and no corrosion etc. Also you may have to kick or spin the motor pretty good to get it to start. I was surprised that I had to kick it so hard to get it to go on this one. I also noticed on this one that I could hear the relay click on in the controller even if I did not spin the wheel. So if the controller is the same you should at least hear the relay click when the trottle is pressed.

      @@ThriftyToolShed . I have charged the battery for 3 days with the charger I ordered from Amazon. I used the Multi-meter to measure the battery voltage. both 12 volt battery on-board the scooter only measured 20.6 volt. The motor spec is 24 volt. So, the battery is not powerful enough to make it to spin. I might end up replace both the Lead acid battery. I can find them on Amazon as well. the battery on my scooter is CP1250H 12 v 5ah. Thanks for your reply.

    You know whats crazy i bought the razor e100 pink scooter also very similar to this one. $15 offer up But i guess i got the crapy version of the e100 it had the same casing or similar speed controler difference is only one relay insted of 2 inside the in speed controler Same plugs but different motor and no chain mine has a direct 550 or 570 not sure what size but its brushed motor instead of the chain driven one this one has and it also has a. Different rear wheel ... My question is do i still have to push start it to get it going and It doesnt click when i pull trotel is that normal it holds charge. It. Turns on and everything i tried pushed stating it and nothing. Motor works.direct so i think its the speed controler but idk what part inside the controller. It cud be. Its not coroded so i wonder what it is thinking of buying a new controller cheaper i think ...

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  4 года назад +1

      If yours is different, it's hard to say for sure. I would think it is definitely a kick start. If yours only has the one relay, it may not click. I would verify the plug to the speed throttle back to board does have voltage coming to the board when turned. Make sure the brake switch is working and not dropping out the controller.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  4 года назад +1

      If you are giving it a good push and still not starting then it could be speed controller. If not already double check voltage is getting to the controller and also make sure the throttle switch input is getting to board and if I remember right the brake switch will kill the board as well, make sure that is working well. If those things are good it's most likely the controller since you have already ran the motor.

      Sounds like from what you are mentioning, that the battery is bad. That is common with older batteries, they show charged fully and die very quick with load. You can tell easier with a load tester. If you don't have a load tester, the best way is to measure the voltage while under load. But it's most likely telling you that anyway when you go to ride it, the load is causing the batteries dropping off.

    How can check the relay with multimeter

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  2 года назад

      The only way may be while still attached to the scooter since it takes the voltage from the motor once kick started to activate the output relay. You should hear the first relay pull in and then if I remember correctly, the second relay pulls in and supplies the motor once the kick start has turned enough to start up. You can also apply the 24V to motor itself as I did here in this video to verify the motor is ok and runs fine to eliminate it being the issue.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  3 года назад

      Well I did clean the corrosion from the board but I did not give the wheel enough help to start with to start it. So just like when you have to kick off or assist the scooter for it to start, I had to turn it by hand very hard as you can see in the video and then it takes off on its own, it's just a safety. So most scooters are that way. You have to kick off first then hit the throttle and it accelerates up. I guess so you can't hit the throttle by accident and it take off and hurt someone.

      I modify the kids powerwheels with 5s lipo. ( they love it). Finally got to fixing the scooter..it woundnt start..or I forgot to push it. Anyways...I simply took the throttle switch from one of the power wheels ( it has a return to zero or thumb release. I can run it on 8s lipo....but it's plenty fast on 6s lipo 50C (25v).
      The scooter has drag on it...it wont kick out from under a kid on 26V...but will drop
      to 24v-25v operating
      The stock esc is also just on or off....it just a safety feature...( kick start)
      to make sure you stand on it so it wont kick out from under the kid
      or it'll go without them standing on it...Kids will be kids.
      on ( 8s)32v-35V it'll do 16-18mph or faster. It might be Okay for older kids
      Ive ran it for 5 miles on 7s to test it...it's fine...it's right around 26-28 V operating.
      The voltage will drop to 4V or less average. 7s is safe or sweet spot.

    Nice video, but imagine if you could additionally repair a faulty controller, if it proved to be faulty, you would not have to do any bypassing or buy a new one, or hope that is is just a matter of cleanup and new batteries . You were lucky the controller only required cleaning and re-soldering. I know these controllers are rather cheap and it may be more suitable for some people to simply buy a new one and replace the complete unit, but if you are somewhat concerned with the environment and like to recycle things, knowing how to repair products is one way to do so and may be attractive to some. I would have completely removed the battery box, as well and cleaned the bike completely, and re-checked the steering bearings, nuts and brakes, before re-installing everything back. Thumbs Up!

      So, I did just clean up and hit some solder joints and I did use the original controller! Are you just asking in general?
      I only bypassed to test motor?
      Yes, I try to repair everything I can in my videos for sure. I salvaged a DeWalt blower in my latest video. I really do have a passion for giving things new life. It has always bothered me to see something thrown out that still has value or potential value! Thanks for your comment!

    I have an identical scooter that I am fixing for some kids. The battery appeared to charge properly, but actually only had a very small capacity while the other battery indicated the same voltage and had full capacity. Apparently, only a small amount of lead exposed in the bad battery. I will get replacements; however, is there any knowledge as to why one battery would die like that - simple age or bad charging? Kobalt Tools make a 24volt lithium battery that may have sufficient capacity - any ideas on how to fit such a battery into the scooter, with the addition of charging ports etc.?

      Sorry, I thought this question was for the newest scooter repair video with the long slim Li-ion pack. This scooter has the lead acid batteries as shown in the video thanks. Disregard the comment following this please.
      Well, the battery is simply cells spot welder together in a long slim design with shrink wrap. I did not have to take this one that belonged to a friend apart, but it looked to be a simple battery build if someone has the experience with them as far as spot welding the tabs etc. to form the battery pack with new cells. Sounds like at least one cell has pulled low on yours. It's always better to replace all cells at once though and sometimes it's about as cheap to buy a new battery. In some cases it's worth repairing a pack with a cell or even a few cells replacement, but it takes time to do it correctly. You have to have other donor packs with same exact cells or have some already that are very similar and also I go through a capacity test and internal resistance test and have all tested very close performing cells together and it usually works well. I used to take time to save cells from packs I picked up from recycle bins and etc. and I had cells with the tested data written on them for repair of packs etc. It's fun and it can be time consuming though. Best of luck to ya!

      I bought this same scooter in 2018, the first thing to fail it’s one battery, I put my multimeter in the output of the charger and I read 30v with the red light on (finish charge)! They cook the batteries! (12v SLA charge at 14v, and then floating charge at 13.6 or some similar, I make two 12v ports (one for each battery) and charge indepently with a imax b6 (multipurpose hobby charger)

    my son had an e300s sitting for 10 years so we decided to get it working again..we knew it needed batteries since they were bulging out...batteries replaced and the scooter would drive for 10 seconds then turn of...hitting reset switch worked but still shut down after 10 seconds...watched some videos and they lead me to believe the batteries were not the best...calling razor and they said replace batteries even though they were new...new batteries didnt work...scooter still cut off after 10 seconds...replaced control module...still cut off after 10 seconds...thought it was weight issue but me and my son weigh 185lbs and the scooter is rated for 220lbs...holding back tire up the scooter would run for ever...was stumped then decided to replace the reset switch and it works perfect now...no more cutting off after 10 seconds even while someone is riding it..kept the replacement control module installed since the original one was dated ''2009'' all in all it cost us $70 to get back up and running..hope my comment and this video helps someone else...
