  • @American_Jeeper
    @American_Jeeper 3 года назад +5

    I’ve seen them three times, Philly in ‘89, Pittsburg in ‘91 and Boise in 2018. While I have always been a fan of Burton, simply because of his talent and the fact that he loved Bach, both times I saw Newsted were spectacular.
    In Philly, he came out on stage by himself, right after “The Thing That Should Not Be”. The spotlight shone down on him, as he said, “ I know in your eyes I’ll never compare to Cliff, but this is my tribute to him...Bass solo, take one.” and the crowd went fuckin nuts. It was flawless.
    In 2018, Metallica showed they had not slowed down one bit. The Taco Bell Arena is a pretty small venue, but they absolutely didn’t give a shit about that. Every single member played his ass off. Again, “Anesthesia, Pulling Teeth “ was on the list, and Rob didn’t disappoint, although I just don’t think he gels with the band like Jason did.
    What was cool was that monitors came down from the ceiling and Cliff was playing too and Rob was right on point with Cliff...gave me chills. There was even a guy in the crowd who was Cliff’s spitting image, long ass hair, moustache, jean jacket and bell bottoms. The spotlight was on him quite a bit; James and Kirk pointed to him several times. The Legend in Loon Pants lived again for a few hours. Awesome concert.

He's on the album version of all of my favorite songs by them excluding Unforgiven but I genuinely like Jason's sound and approach more. It's really hard to pick my favorite Metallica bassist, actually. Cliff was the OG and wrote really great stuff that defined Metallica; Jason (when you hear AJFA songs live and can hear the bass) had some great writing too for many albums, a fantastic stage presence, can sing, and is a great performer, and was who helped Metallica become a household name in the first place; and Robert is technically awesome and heavier in his riffs and writing, which I always like to hear so I love his work on _Death_ _Magnetic_ and HTSD, two awesome albums.

    One thing’s for sure. If you have to go to the bathroom at that concert, you’re going to be walking awhile.
    Personally, I like Jason out of the three. Their music with him sounds darker and more aggressive to me. I’ll say this in defense of the Black Album. You can play slower tempos and still sound as heavy as faster music. They proved that. Take Sad But True, for example. It’s one of their slower songs and in the key of D minor, which is uncharacteristic of Metallica, but it still sounds beastly. You can thank Bob Rock for getting them to experiment with tuning down a full step to get that sound.
    As for Jason, who was the one guy that could walk through fire with those three after losing Cliff, I got a lot of respect for him.

    It's seemingly a very commonly done thing by the big four 80s thrash metal bands to blend the natural minor and Phrygian mode depending on the section of the song.
    Another example would be Symphony Of Destruction by Megadeth. The famous riff from that song is very Phrygian, but the chorus is a lot more natural minor. Indians by Anthrax goes back and forth a lot too. Slayer often is so chromatic it's hard to tell 🤣 but they still use the aoelean/phrygian framework.

    I was too young to live the scene in the 70's, but I'm so glad I fully enjoyed the 80's. Looking back at this raw energy just makes it so much clearer how much music has been watered down and neutered these days. I was fortunate to see Metallica several times back in the day, with Queensryche, with Suicidal Tendencies... jesus, after these shows it took you a week to recover lol.

    Jason's vocals on this song was his prime. But rob will always be my favorite bassist

    Kinda crazy that this was done this week. I just did a video about Creeping Death that came out the day after this. It's on the channel for my podcast Petal to the Metal. Show's called Epic Riffs. I know you probably won't get to see this, but as someone still learning to describe stuff from a theory perspective, I would love some feedback Master Shred. Horns up!

    Newsted, no questions asked. Cliff was great, but Jason had that energy that the band needed.

    I love Robert and cliff and no disrespect towards them but I grew up in the Jason era. So I'd have to go with Jason as much as I love the work of rob and cliff

    You didn't mention a passing Dorian note, C#, just before the beginning of the verses.

    • @Cr8Tron
      @Cr8Tron Год назад

      That was one of the main reasons I watched; to see if he had anything to say about that. He also wasn't listening carefully enough to notice that the chorus is still in aeolian, and only briefly flirts with the phrygian whenever they hit that F chord.

    This was a great time to be alive.... of course Cliff was the man.... Jason is awesome and did his best.....Trujillo is a ad man and fit in well with the aging Metallica.
