Yeah, Kirk took lessons with Joe Satriani, so he understood harmony and rhythm on a good level. But I think it was Cliff the big force on the theory on Metallica. Definitely the best musician in the band. I wonder if he had not died...

I love the song, almost entirely, except for two (minor) things. The recapitulation part should be a part of a transition between sections; I personally find it anti-climactic as the song’s ending. And I would have worked a bit transitioning between the song’s beginning and the (killer) riff on the second section (maybe asking Lars to do some tasty drum fills in between?). Outside of these, this is a kickass song, and Scott, you did a kickass analysis of this one. Well done. Loved it.

Cool Video, although I personally do not equate Metallica with Shred.
I also doubt that Theory was ever considered when this song was made, the only Dorian they may have heard of was Gray.
As you pointed out, this song is based on E5, and the open E pedal tone which was the norm in this era. It appears to me that the Chord, and Note choices are all based off of the E, and are pretty much following the Black Sabbath approach to song writing by incorporating the b5 in an already implied Em to create the overall evil tonality.

I believe that metallica do know their music theory, at least kirk does, Most of their early stuff was so melodic and almost classical in nature, there is absolutely no way they don’t know their theory... of anything, they probably know it so well, that they know when to brake from it...
An old friend of mine was a classical pianist that switched to jazz. During an interview with a national classical music radio station, they asked: you started off as a classical pianist, then you switched to jazz, can you explain the difference?
His reply was: well, classical music is all about the rule, jazz is all about the exception to the rule...
So is it possible that metallica started off being classically influenced in their theory, but became so aware that they ended up being jazz influenced? Even without knowing it?
    Just saying...
