I would look into your oxygen absorbers. Once the bag is open you only have so much time to use them and each bag usually has several absorbers. So if you open you need to put them in a jar as soon as possible or use them as fast as you can. So that you are not wasting them.
Also pro tip. Try prefreezing your food on the trays before you put in the freeze dryer to cut down on running time

I found 8 cans o evaporated milk passed its pull date by 2 years and I open each can smelled it. It was still good so in the Freeze Dryer it went, turned out amazing. I will have to sent mine back because it has started to only have 5 rings of ice in the front 6 inches of my FD. It probably low on freon, right now doing a one cup per tray water run then I will take pictures and contact Harvest Right. There are a lot of people having this same problem. It ran perfect the first 5 months. I love it and would buy it all over again.

We have had our freeze dryer for less than a year and have had loads of fun experimenting. We got ours at the tail end of tomato season and sliced tomatoes and sprinkled a different seasoning on each tray and they were a great snack. We made plain ones as well and powdered them up to thicken up ketchup I made that wasn't as thick as it should have been as well as adding to soups, etc. We have had freeze dried, chili, soup, refried beans, raw scrambled eggs and powdered, candy, fruit.....the grandkids as well as adults have loved everything so far and we are totally amazed. We bought a chopper on Amazon, as well as more bags and oxygen absorbers, to speed up dicing and store potatoes, onions, carrots, zucchini in jars as those get used to add to soup, eggs, etc. Make sure to keep the oxygen absorbers sealed up once you open the package. You are going to love it! Hugs to you all.....

You can store extra oxygen absorbers in a canning jar filled with rice. The rice pushes extra oxygen out of the jar. Then vacuum seal the jar and they will keep for a long time.

I have a small orchard and my best tip is to be sure and research what variety grows best in your area. The orchard that you mentioned close to your old house would be a great resource. Fruit trees take time to mature so it is worth the time to pick the right varieties for your area. Oh, I fenced in the area of my orchard, and we run ducks there. They do a good job helping with pests and do not dig up the mulch around the plants and provide great eggs. Great video!!

As I understand it, when you juice you can dehydrate or freeze dry the pulp left over and powder. Another way to waste not want not! I bet you'll love your freeze dryer the more you get into it. I don't have one but hear about them and can see their value. Also, you probably will like having it in the garage. Noise factor, space, etc. Before you know it you'll be wanting a second one! And, now you need to look into tools for shredding, slicing, etc. Have a great day!

So glad you guys are finally getting to use the freeze dryer!! We have been using ours for over a year and love it!! One of our favorite things is to scramble a bunch of raw eggs from the chickens and Freeze dry!!! Just an FYI, Be careful about leaving the oxygen absorbers open, reseal the unused right away or store them in a mason jar with a lid or they will go bad. Also, ziplocks are not completely airtight, and they can take on moisture again. So if you’re not using right away, Mylar or jars are the best, and it’s best to get the products into them as soon as you can after they come out of the FD. I would just hate to have you find out the hard way after all the work you put into preserving everything..😘
I hope you got the tray stackers we sent you for Christmas! They will save a lot of freezer space if you are pre-freezing, and will help with carrying your trays without having the bottoms of the trays touching the food on the tray below it. Happy freeze drying!!!

Nate, I have some Questions for you!
If I have a vacuums food saver/ heat sealer, should I still put one of the oxygen absorber in there still? Also, how would Pemmican do for freeze-drying and how long do you think it would last?
Also, with dehydrating, if you powder things, they wont last as long due to more surface area. Is this the same when it comes to that?
How much electric does it take in 48 hours?
Do you use the oil free pump?
you should make potato chips and see how they do!
Would honey do well if you were to make a smoothie mix powder?
Could you still ferment the cabbage once you add water?
Freeze-dry made coffee, for instant coffee! I have heard that tastes amazing.
You two are such a beautiful couple!
You can easily freeze-dry soups for camping and backpacking. Freeze dried sweets are amazing!! I buy them on FB marketplace! $5 a bag but they are yummy!
Could you Freeze-dry Lemon Juice and use it in canning for tomato pastes and sauces etc.?

When you open oxygen absorbers place in glass jar with lid or they will go bad and wallaby maylar bags are very economical priced and made in America. I don't recommend putting oxygen absorbers if you will eat within a year. The maylar bags keep light out to help last longer so dont need oxygen absorbers it in ziploc bags

Oh, guys. I hope you have as much fun as I’m having. Experiment a bunch…. It’s the best way to learn. Save up leftovers until you have enough to do a load. The only thing i would say is that when you buy a huge bag of OA, open the package once and repackage them in smaller Mylar bags ( I bought some small ones just for this reason) and make sure to open, take as many as you need and QUICKLY reseal the package. Remember oxygen is not your friend!!! Have fun!!! P.s. start a log book of pre FD weight and post FD weight so you know of much water to put back in. More important for casseroles, chili, tomatoes, etc. not necessary for apples, other fruits, etc. You will love doing your flowers!,

We are still on the fence about a freeze dryer. My garden produced 5 gallons of salsa, which I canned and froze. But my gardening skills, and space, seem too small for the investment in a freeze dryer. But my cooking skills are good, and I still only know how to cook for an army, but there are only 2 of us.

You sound like me. :) Kids left and I still cook for an army. My husband and I purchased a FD and we love it. People buy them because of concerns with supply chain or to preserve what they grow OR (like us) preserve what you we from local farmers. I'll FD a lot of fruit so my husband munches fruit at night instead of unhealthy snacks although there are some of those still in there. Join some groups and find FD channels. There's a lot to know but it's easy once you get the hang of it. Check out dehydrators also. Dehydrators pull more vitamins out HOWEVER during the cooking process those nutrients are removed anyway so some people say it doesn't matter. You can check out Rain Country's channel here in YT. She doesn't have a FD and explains why she dehydrates. Good luck!

I would like to be "prepared" my only question is what happens when we no longer have these resources? Such as bags, lids for canning jars, freeze dryer, dehydrator, electricity, etc...am I the only one that thinks of this?

Becky at Acre homestead did a video reviewing a bunch of freeze dried candy. Check it out

Between the actual cost of the dryer and to use it I’m not sure.

We will soon find out on our electric bill. Because we grow so much food, it was definitely worth it to us

You need to keep oxygen absorbers in an airtight container until you 100% ready to use.

What's the difference in a dehydrator and a freeze dryer?

Freeze dryer gets 100% moisture out and has a longer shelf life. It also freezes vs. Heat

💰🤑I would like to know what the electric demand is for a freeze dryer. Since those couple cabbages took 30 hours. 🤔
    P.s. nice "styrofoam" cabbage ASMR!
I hear freeze dryer Candie is delicious!
🍋🥭🍍 You could probably do alot of fruit trees in the tunnel if you utilize a passive heat source- compost, etc.
