Silent Night is a spiritual song. The arrangement of this beautiful song with Avi interjecting Peace is something we all need right now. I'm all for the spiritual side of Christmas, not the commercialism.
PTX has turned "Silent Night" into a soft, beautiful lullaby. The emphasis on the word "sleep" has such a soothing and calming effect - sung by the voices of angels.
I enlarged the picture. As the trio first started singing Avi's body was swaying back and forth like waves washing over him. When he started singing I don't think he ever opened his eyes. Absolutely beautiful
PTX are not fooling us. We know they're literal angels.

I'm showing my age, but in 1976, I toured Germany with a youth orchestra. We were from a fine arts camp. We had an orchestra, jazz band, concert band & choir. We got to sing a madrigal thing in a church in Strasbourg, France & it was so magical! These guys are always magical!!!
I love the little glance Scott gives Avi at the end. I know they all love and appreciate each other's talents and skills, but Scott is the most obvious about showing it.

I've heard so many versions of silent night in my lifetime. This is by far the best! Live in a church, I love that you can hear the echo. So soft and gentle. I feel very moved and at peace. Touches my soul.

This is truly A Capella as it was created and intended! Then the beautiful carol Silent Night become a breath of angelic air floating to the rafters - the spirit of its original self. These guys are just amazing. I am not sure they realise just how good they are ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's just magic when Avi and Mitch sing together.
Don't get me wrong, Matt is wonderful, and has filled some big shoes very nicely. But something extraordinary happened when Avi and Mitch's voices came together. Simply put, it was perfection.
This was shot in a cathedral in Germany while they were on a European tour. Watch how Avi smiles now and then while the trio sings, and then how Scott looks over at Avi a few times, especially right as Avi sings that last note. Also note that they have their eyes closed, feeling each other throughout the song, tuning into each other.
Charlotte can you do me a favor for a missing connection on Fantasy Records website that I can't get the attention of anyone to fix yet over the last 2 months? I even joined his fan club on Facebook and they just told me to try again. Well that was a couple of weeks ago now again. Perhaps you have a connection with Avi's reps? It is quite simple. When you go into Fantasy Records in the first page you go down past several categories to "Our Artists" and Avi isn't there. It is where people can subscribe to the artist's own page as well but he just isn't there. He is in other places but not where it is easy to click on the link and subscribe to his page.

I also bugged them once again about getting Avi on one of the late night shows, as they've done for many of their other artists. He so deserves that exposure!

Somebody needs to get thru either to Fantasy Records or to Avi's people to get that fixed. I know how much traffic you can miss with that kind of error from my own experience.

Barry ☘️, Thanks! This is beautiful. This morning I have listened to this 5-6 times. The singing of course and the setting too! Yes! Perfect. The beautiful arch perfectly lit behind them, the sound echoing. I am so so pleased that this was live. Read, no Mission Control Center. They are their own sliders and knobs. One thing that struck me here is their voice control. Even their coordinated breathing added to the musicality. Not even sure that made sense.
I am sure by now you know I am someone that likes to be immersed in an experience with all of my senses. So, here again, make a spot for me on the floor there. I can’t tell you how badly I want to have been lying there drinking this in. And Barry, please add yourself in there right between Mitch and Scott. I imagine that you could sing well in this style.
I know that it is partly the echo and that it is unaccompanied, but the sound at 4:00 - 4:36 reminded me of William Byrd or Thomas Tallis compositions. Is that considered a floating melody? That is how I hear it anyway. Very moving. (It’s too serious to concentrate much on the obvious pun there) Something I want to experience in my life is to hear early church music being sung in a church like this. I am certain it would be an experience that would evoke awe.

My all time favorite arrangement of this song. It is deceptively difficult. Those planned dissonances make it tricky to stay on pitch, but they nailed it.

One of the humblest Christmas videos they have done and one of my favorites. They are just so very special.
Can you imagine the other people in the church when they started singing? They must have been totally blown away.
I love how they started out with the original Trio, showcasing how talented they were even before Kevin and Avi joined. Then Avi showcasing his range that many people aren't even aware of. Very similar to Avi's solo albums, where he jumps seamlessly from bass to upper registers.

Oh god, that bit in the middle where it's mostly Avi and Mitch together, with the others just mingling in the background. That's always been my dream to hear a full song of just Mitch and Avi mingling Mitch's high notes with Avi's low notes. How lovely that would be.
Finally!!!! The arrangement is extraordinary and yes, they all sound angelic. The live performance it's a plus, a great treat. Not to mention the church acoustics. I agree, Avi's voice is truly emotional, both in its low and high. I also love Kevin's part throughout the whole "sleep" section. Beautiful!
This just confirms that pentatonix is the real deal. Amazing that kevin and Avi joined the group the day before they preformed on the Sing Off and without them I can't listen to anything else.

Whenever I listen to this song (since childhood, I loved that song sung by a male choir my father sang in) Christmas finds its way into my heart. ... And tears into my eyes... This, along with Mary Did You Know and O Holy Night are my top 3 favorite Christmas songs. Ever single time I hear them sing this, I get goosebumps. There is no one better than PTX for Christmas. Their pure vocals and harmonies on this get me every time. All Christmas songs take me back to my childhood where my grandpa would play Christmas songs on the organ and all the grandkids would sing along. So many fond Christmas memories.

Scott, Mitch and Kirstin were originally a trio. They entered the “Sing Off” only to discover they were required to have at least 5 members. Avi and Kevin joined just days prior to the “Sing Off”.
And they would have lost all the other groups having those standard elements of a cappella performing groups.
Can,t wait for christmas with this music.
The vocal coaches love this one to react to. First because they love live acoustic performances without any additional reverb or studio effects possible demonstrating the purity of the individual voices. The different styles of music they incorporated using a round in place of a chorus. How it demonstrates how the bass line actually directs the melody usually in performances. The use in this case of both of his vocal registers, the standard and then the upper by the bass singer Avi Kaplan in the round portion of the song. Quite unusual vocal although bass singers can use it if they practice enough similarly to higher pitched singers.

This is my favorite of their Christmas songs! Such a beautifully unique arrangement. FYI, it was filmed in a church in Germany, while they were doing a weeklong promotional blitz in Europe for the Christmas album. They were in the church for some reason I don’t know offhand, heard the acoustics in this section, and decided it was the perfect place to film a live rendition of this song.

Very simply done. This is not the most polished presentation I've seen with Pentatonix but with the simplicity, it is really beautiful to see them singing from the heart.

After Christmas, a similar song in that it's basically just filmed in a wonderful acoustic setting without needing much if any post-production (this time a basement hallway somewhere), is their cover of "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye. Also, if you're not familiar with it already, the original is an amazing song, emotional in a very different way, and well worth watching. Perhaps you'd consider a double-header?

Ah, Barry, as you love Silent Night, can I recommend that you listen to Emma Kirkby sing it? Not a review necessarily, but just for your own enjoyment. It’s such a delicate and pretty version, done in 3/4, waltz time.

Yeah counting is necessary with acapella at times, otherwise, the parts come in all over the place. I went to a church one time that had a piano and I was so lost? I had no idea when to start, I am sure that is obvious to everybody, but really in acapella congregational singing you don’t really start at the start, the more enthusiastic singers may come in by the 2nd word, the rest by the 3rd or 4th word. Isn’t that strange?

Have mercy, my relief from night hospital duty didn’t arrive until 10 am! Someone missed the memo on the duty roster? She was home by noon, I could have just stayed there and brought her home myself? They had good coffee though and thank goodness. I was struggling big time by 7 am? I came back here and crashed, which didn’t make the 4 year old happy at all. I managed 2 hours before she woke me up. 😂 She keeps wanting to go outside but it was 105 degrees here today. I said, AB, (which to your ear probably sounds like Aaaaaa Bbbeeee) I can do a lot of things but sit outside when it is 105 is not one of them. I got a pout face. 😂
Oh she had the pain relief available but getting her to take it was another problem? There was a lot of this going on last night by me 🙄. She was not exactly all there and I finally told the nurse to bring it anyway and she did. 🙄

I am beginning to feel paranoid about this, I mean the odds should be quite high that there would be one man somewhere? And in my favor? 😂
About 2 am I handed her my phone with your PTX 90’s dance medley and that turned into a ridiculous situation. 😂 The goal, to get her mind off of things, was to identify the 90’s songs she knew. She kept saying, he is funny, I like his accent where is he from, hahahaha he is so funny, he can sing what does he do? 🙄 At the same time I was saying, do you know that song, how about that song. So it turned into….Do you know that song, he is funny, how about that song, he is so funny, how about that song, where is he from his accent blah blah blah. Finally this was me, giving up 🙄. But as a distraction it worked?
Well, I would say that music always moved you and you were headed in the direction of the person you would become? Tuned In, as in literally. Music does that to me as well but probably not in the same way as it does you.

105 is not fun, it is indeed unBARRYable, I laughed at that and why wouldn’t anybody? AB talked me out of the house to play on the swings in the backyard. She told me I would be okay because it was in the shade from the fence? That made it 101 in the shade so it was not really okay. We were swinging along, I was not paying attention to the wind, it picked up and suddenly there was this sand storm like you wouldn’t believe. I could barely see the back door to the house and we were not that far away? So back to the shower for me and AB….I mean honestly this is crazy, and AB is a devious child. 😂

Of all of their songs, this is the one that, to me, practically begs one to sing along. They practically bury the actual melodic line within all those inverted chords, right up until the moment when Mitch sings the last line of the second verse. And I, for one, would love to hear you do just that. Just imagine your lovely voice mixed in with theirs. Do consider giving us one lovely virtual collaboration with them, you singing the straight melodic line, with them behind you. For Christmas?
