He’s right, though. I spent 15 years in Southeast Asia (primarily Indonesia) on a bicycle. Long haul tours, some of which lasted over a year through remote hinterlands. Jakarta, Bangkok, Makassar were commuting grounds from home to work and back. I was lucky enough to work as a guide for long distance tours for 5 years over there too. I’d be lying if I told you I hadn’t seen some crazy shit over there. But in the three years I’ve been back in the US, I haven’t rode my bike once on these streets. The reason? I’m fucking terrified. People here are already pretty much out of control the way they drive. But you add to that the fact that so many drive while on their phones? Joey is not exaggerating: you’re in danger. People think I have it ass backwards to have felt so comfortable doing what I did over there and being scared to do the same here. Not crazy at all. I know the risks and they are totally not worth it to me here.

I was in LA 3 years ago and as a Dutchman i never felt more insecure on a bicycle than in the LA traffic. My cousin told me there was a nice canyon nearby and when they went on their short honeymoon i took his bike, put a backpack on me with some water and some smokables and on i went. Goddamn dude 15 minutes in, the bike lane just stopped and i had to cross some highway looking road full with speeding cars. This tourist went straight back to his house in Northridge. Never got to that canyon he was talking about. I just stayed in my cousins backyard and got high. When LA was in full lockdown last year that was THE PERFECT moment to fix that traffic shit, put in tram system, better bus connections, more and safer bicycle lanes. What a missed opportunity that was.
I like Joey's new podcast Uncle Joey's Joint, but since it's usually just him solo, there's not really any loud and hilarious ranting going on. He is however, doing TREMENDOUS since moving back to Jersey.
As a 31-year-old skater, I can get behind my man, Joey I’d rather see the cars coming versus having cars behind me. It ain’t the legal way to do things, but I’d rather see what’s coming then have it come up my ass and take me by surprise when I’m on my skateboard, I don’t trust fucking nobody.
