Just found this. It’s one of my favourite Niteworks’ tracks and Somhairle’s words are as true now as when they were recorded. Thank you for creating this.
I’m even later to the party than some. His words cut deep. I feel EVERY word. I have moved from the Islands and I ended up in England. I am without my language, without my people and without my community. It has been 14 years of loneliness and 14 years of homesickness. I long to come home and hear the Gàidhlig again!
Andrew I am late to the party in many ways.I have followed you for years and thanks to you have reignighted my love for my calf country .I am currently learning gaelic. thanks in part to you. Keep it up you are an inspiration ...😌😀
How amazing. I've been postponing watching this video because I thought it was just going to be pretty pictures and a song. How wrong I was. Thank you for this.
Brilliant, man. Great piece of music put to the words of Sorley and you've captured it in a gey braw film. Thoroughly appreciated, a grand piece of work. :)
The 'Clearance' scenes were shot in Raasay, both the cleared village of Hallaig and the abandoned iron ore works. 'Corporate Greed' was shot - naturally - in London. The rest was in the islands of Lewis, Harris, Berneray, North Uist, and South Uist.
My pleasure Patrick! As soon as I heard this piece, it stopped me dead in my tracks, and I knew I had to go back to Raasay to film the visualisation that appeared in my head. I can only hope I've done justice to such a moving and powerful poem.
Great video with great editing it really fits the song well, just out of curiosity do you have a link to the poem at all? I've tried searching for it but had no luck finding it.
Seoras Mackay Thanks very much a Sheòrais. I have no link to the poem I'm afraid - I just found the words by searching for them and for 'The Island Sorley MacLean'. Cheers.
movingimage.nls.uk/film/3141 I don't think this was actually a poem of his; it seems to have been an extract from this film (from 2:38), which is well worth watching in its entirety. Dòchas gu bheil sin cuideachail dhuibh uile!
Andrew Ditton That's ridiculous! I rlly hope Scotland become independent from the UK so they can finally have leaders who actually give even the slightest f*ck about their own language. Irish is even compulsory in most secondary schools here in NORTHERN Ireland! They need to do more about the Scottish Gaelic /language /Gáidhlig (not sure what to call it)
In Scotland You are taught French and Gaelic. When you Reach the end of your second year of secondary you can choose one. At the end of third year you can drop all languages.

I love the way Somhairle's words refuse to be silenced!

The song itself is mighty, the spoken words of Sorley, truly powerful (and the video absolutely elevates it). Perfection.

This song makes me cry sometimes!!!!!

I really like this. Excellent filming and really well put together. Brilliant choice of tune and subject.
Thanks Rich! As soon as I heard the track, making this video became a bit of an obsession of mine.
What locations are we seeing in the video?

Does anyone know where I can find the original recording from Somhairle or even the original transcript? Thanks!
Afraid not John, sorry I can't be of more help.
Your editing is getting better and better Andrew great work
Thanks Jack! This one was a 12 week labour of love, but I'm glad I could edit it to match what was visualised in my head.
I love this... Saor Alba.

Is Gaidhlig taught is schools in England because it really should be in my opinion to help it live on...
This song honestly got me emotional.
No, not as far as I'm aware. And I think you'll find it's optional in Scotland :(
