    Icing is no joke. RIP

    Heartbreaking - thanks for the upload.
    RIP.
    Using the autopilot in icing is a big no no, as is flying above maneuvering speed in turbulence.

      just like using cruise control in a car during inclement weather

      Sorry but what does ‘flying above manoeuvring speed in turbulence’ mean?

    • @saint_play
      @saint_play 26 дней назад

      Manufacturers set a max manoeuvring speed so pilots know the max speed that aircraft can withstand all the pressures and forces it will encounter at that speed. Anything faster and you risk the aircraft breaking apart. Add that to flying in the violence and turbulence in bad weather and that's just going to be disastrous @@alexcoxcox87

      @@alexcoxcox87 All certified aircraft have published "V speeds" or air speeds. Stall speeds, Never Exceed speed, Best Climb, etc. "Va" is maximum maneuvering speed, the maximum airspeed at which you can use a full deflection on a control surface (aileron, rudder, elevator) without damaging the aircraft. It varies by aircraft weight, and turbulence can narrow those margins considerably. But icing is IMO is the scary bit here.
      Ice, mountains, IMC, single pilot. Just the worst possible combo.

    I didn’t read the “Fatal” part of the title before viewing. This was heartbreaking. My condolences to the pilot’s friends and family. I’m not going to start saying what he should or could have done. I feel there’s a time and place for place for that and right now it’s too soon and I don’t feel it would be right of me to comment without all the information. I’m just so sorry to the loved ones for their loss.

      How is it heartbreaking? No one is immortal lmao.

      @@canadianaviator It’s heartbreaking because I’m capable of empathy and therefore neither a psychopath nor a sociopath. It’s heartbreaking because he came so close to being safe only to not make it and to lose his life. Just because no one is immortal doesn’t make death something I treat nonchalantly, even whilst surrounded by it day-in, day-out. There’s a reason I said there’s a time and a place and that’s because I don’t think it is right to judge someone’s actions with only a few of the facts, nor is it right to do so on a public forum where his loved ones may find themselves listening to what happened, only to read disparaging comments from people who never knew the man.
      Whilst most remain respectful when lives are lost, there are those few like yourself who choose to laugh at it. Why? You knew before you even started to write the comment you did that it wouldn’t be welcome amongst anyone respectful towards those close to the man who has only just lost his life, yet you wouldn’t stop yourself because you appear to be desperate for some attention.
      Whatever your opinions on death are makes no difference to me. Your lack of respect for any family member or loved one in this pilot’s life who may one day stumble across this, laughing at empathy shown towards them for their loss, only serves to show the kind of person you are. Take the advice given to Thumper: If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.

    amazing how fast it goes bad

      Yeh, unfortunately it was going bad way before it ended. He just didn't either realize it or was too cool to let on. His autopilot was trying to get his attention. Poor kid, icing over any mtns is not good. Midwest not so bad because you can point the nose over, keep your airspeed up and get down to warmer temp. Not an option over the Sierra mtns.

      It went bad during pre-flight planning.

    Moderate icing is an emergency for that aircraft.
    Escape must be as fast as possible, not whenever.
    Using an autopilot in icing masks loss of control.

    Turbulence, icing, IMC and single pilot hand flying a STAR... Rough for a lower time pilot who may have not flown it before. He should have accepted the vectors.

    • @TheFlyingZulu
      @TheFlyingZulu 26 дней назад +2

      Or rather a pilot having issues with his autopilot while on a STAR and probably attempting to hand fly it but it would seem it was too late for him to correct.

    I wonder why there is no ELT signal

    • @austinholmes96
      @austinholmes96 26 дней назад +1

      Maybe the signal was blocked by terrain?

    • @denverbraughler3948

      VHF radio travels in line of sight. Aircraft flying overhead can receive the signal transmission, but ground stations can’t.
