ADVICE FOR ANYONE MOVING TO TENNESSEE:
    1. Save all bacon grease. You will be instructed later how to use it.
    2. If you do run your car into a ditch during a snow, don't panic. Four men in the cab of a four wheel drive with a 12-pack of beer and a tow chain will be along shortly. Don't try to help them. Just stay out of their way. This is what they live for.
this also applies to warm weather. dont try to pay them with money either, beer however is a different story.
    3. Remember: "Y'all" is singular. "All y'all" is plural. "All y'all's" is plural possessive.
    4. Get used to the phrase "It's not the heat, it's the humidity". And the collateral phrase "You call this hot? Wait'll August."
    5. Don't tell us how you did elsewhere. Nobody cares.
    6. If you think it's too hot, don't worry. It'll cool down-in December.
    7. A Mercedes-Benz is not a status symbol, a Chevy, Dodge, or Ford is.
    8. If someone says they're "fixin" to do something, that doesn't mean anything's broken.
    9. The value of a parking space is not determined by the distance to the door, but the availability of shade.
    10. If you are driving a slower moving vehicle, on a two lane road pull onto the shoulder that is called "courtesy".
    11. BBQ is a food group. It does NOT mean grilling burgers and hot dogs outdoors.
    12. Yes, weddings, funerals, and divorces must take into account for UT Football games. never schedule on saturday in the fall
    13. Everything is better with Ranch dressing.
    14. DO NOT honk your horn at us to be obnoxious, we will sit there until we die.
    15. We pull over and stop for emergency vehicles to pass.
    16. We pull over for funeral processions, turn our music off and men remove hats or caps. Some people put their hand over their heart.
    17. "Bless your Heart" is a nice way of saying you're an idiot.
    18. No matter what kind : sprite, coke, pepsi, mtn dew, it isn't called soda or pop. It is all called coke.
    19. There will always be a tractor on the two lane when you are running late, so allow time for that.
    20. If you don't like the weather in Tennessee, wait 15 minutes, it will change.

My family and I live in upstate NY. Our dream is to move to Eastern Tennessee. We visited last year, and looked at property in the Union and Claiborne County areas.
The thing that stuck out most to us, aside from the beautiful scenery, was that nearly everyone we encountered was SO friendly and polite. Living in NY, people are generally pretty unhappy, and are often rude to others without cause. With the high cost of living, insane taxes (that the governor is threatening to raise), excessive regulations, and laws that trample our rights, it's no wonder people are miserable here.
In Tennessee, we felt like a weight was lifted off of us. It felt like home. When we got back to NY, the whole family went through a mild depression for the first two weeks. Our short time in Tennessee made us feel more welcome and comfortable than the town I grew up in.
Lord willing we'll get back soon, and hopefully this time it will be permanent.

I now live in a “city” with 7000 people (for work)... but it’s the ONLY place for miles with any significant population. But as I’ve gotten older I realize the 7 months of winter are just too much... I think Tennessee is the opposite that way, still plenty of friendly, small towns, mountains and national forest only with 7 months of summer instead!

I've lived in carter county my whole life, it's beautiful. I will warn you crack and meth runs rapid in carter county and all surrounding counties. Dont let this scare you, you will learn quickly that the sketchiest looking people are typically the nicest. The people with the worst houses or messiest hair are usually the most humble people. People in Elizabethon say mountain city is dangerous, ignore them mountain city has just as many crackheads as Hampton. In downtown Elizabethon there is a frozen yogurt place called sweetsie treats. It's like sweet frog but locally owned and better. The drive movie theater in valley forge or in bristol are the best thing to do on a summer weekend. Always know when there is a big event at the speedway traffic will be awful. And go to the speedway and lights at Christmas time, you wont regret it. Good luck moving and I hope you love it

I moved from California to TN two years ago. One thing I noticed is food is more expensive here. My food expenses have doubled since moving to TN. The portions sizes in California were much bigger and you always took some home, despite the entire plate being a few dollars cheaper than a meal in TN (Mexican food is an example.) The fresh produce is so much cheaper in California, but that’s not much of a fair comparison considering California provides much of the produce throughout the US. Sure is a plus though.
Tennessee is very pretty, but as someone who eats a lot, the prices and variety are disappointing.

    • @jordyjord1519
      @jordyjord1519 2 года назад +1

Bro same! I moved here 2 years ago from California and noticed the same thing. A bland meal at salsaritas cost me 17$! What are some cons you’ve noticed about Tennessee now that the honeymoon phase is gone? I find it very hard to find good food😂 at least in the Knoxville area. Also we don’t find that the people are as friendly as everyone made it out to be. I believe Californians are way nicer especially when it comes to customer service😂

    • @malaquiasalfaro81
      @malaquiasalfaro81 2 года назад

@@jordyjord1519 historically, the idea of Southern Hospitality is tied in with, having “help” with cooking and cleaning, and tending to the crops. You do the math. It’s pretty easy to be “hospitable” and whip up a meal when you have someone to do it for you. Much of the South was built on the Ethos of imitating European aristocracy.
Anyway I think a lot of the compliments of the South are from southerners themselves not outsiders.
As for East TN, it’s always been historically isolated so there’s not a lot of diversity. The whiskey here is bomb and the many moonshine brands are great! Old Forge is my 100% favorite. It’s a shame it has a bad light, I see it as no different than Cali’s Vineyards. It’s an art and a craft. Also, the McDonalds Apple Pie is actually a real Appalachian recipe that originated in Knoxville! So you’ve had a piece of the South this whole time. Nowadays my wife and make huge rice beans and pork burritos with good salsa all week, then we go to Asheville on the weekend to get different food.
Cons though… to sum it up
      1. Food is pretty bland and expensive
      2. Cost of Living is low but that also correlated with demand, gotta ask yourself why people would prefer to live elsewhere. That’ll take some soul-searching.
      3. East TN is MAD suburban, and they don’t even realize it. It’s not as rural and country as people think it is. I felt more country pretty much anywhere in Cali, even SF haha that was a gold mining spot! I’d check out Not Just Bikes to kind of explain the reason why things are built the way they are here.
That’s pretty much the only cons I have, but that’s also cause there isn’t a lot going on here. Knoxville is good though! Try heading further East and it gets more and more sparse…, enjoy being in that area haha it has the only Costco for miles.
Hit me up though on one of my videos or something if you want to chat about the change and all that. It’s good to share experiences

@@AlaskaErik I am inclined to believe you. My only knowledge of Alaskan prices comes from a self described "poor hungry native boy just trying to make it." He is from Wasilla lol.

Understand Tennessee has a high sells tax for a reason. With a high sales tax that means EVERYONE who visits Tennessee and spends any money is helping Tennessees budget. That in turn keeps residents from paying alot of other taxes. If you dont like the high sales tax then budget your spending in the state more. I've lived here all my life and traveled all over the country. I'll pay the high sells tax gladly to keep out state income taxes.

@Marcus P don't worry! I have no intention of bringing this morally twisted value system with me! I might as well be an alien here. I look forward to living in a place with conservative views and values.

Actually, in the Central Valley (Bakersfield and Fresno) they tend to be much more conservative than most people think of Californians. I am originally from Fresno and moved to eastern Tn. About 10 years ago. Love it!

@@tracyfinch3974 I moved here about 4 months ago, I also lived in San Francisco, CA for 4 years. Tennessee is a wonderful state. The people are wonderful atleast in the town I live. I don't want to see the ways of CA brought here. Not meaning you, but many people escape from CA, yet they continue to have a leftist mentallity.
