This is likely the most romantic thing I have ever seen. The way they interact is so deep and sensual. And the astounding glory of their voices just takes it over the edge.
The young Pavarotti was extremely excellent and of course Freni is one of the greatest in her prime. Both gorgeous colours of tones here. Like anything the voice wears down and unfortunately a lot of singers reach their fame after the prime years. Pavarotti at his peak fame could not beat himself as a young man.
Unworldly power and expression. What a beautiful treat. Both from Modena Italy living on the same street and growing up together dreaming of being opera singers. They sound angelic together.
No tenor voice comes close to his, his power and crispness was truly awesome, even at his heaviest he still had it, and that’s what years of practice brings 🙌
Luciano- “c è freddo fuori” ...and you can feel the cold December air sweep through the music. Mirella IS Mimì , vocally and in the simple ways she had on and off stage . Worked with both of them and saw them many times, it was unforgettable.
Sadly you’ll not here this caliber of voices again. God bless’d them both with those incredible gifts and thru video we can delight in this golden era of singing. Just think at this same time there was Franco Corelli beginning his incredible career, Leontyne Price, Robert Merrill and I could go on... Thank you for this treat.
I hope they are reunited and singing together again tonight. I had the pleasure of seeing both Pavarotti and Freni many times. May she sleep sweetly and be blessed for the joy she brought to us here on earth.
@@Theaterofthepilgrammige Yes “‘tis” my opinion, but it’s one based completely in fact. The other opinions you mention are faith based. Faith is the belief in something for which there is no proof.
I had the indescribable pleasure to see Pavarotti in Boheme at the Met back in the ‘70’s. Not only was the performance beyond words, but we managed to find our way backstage afterwards where I met him for the first time. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life!
How wonderful to see Mirella and Luciano together singing one of their iconic duets very early in their career.. I had the pleasure of seeing Pavarotti a couple times in opera and concert over the years and meeting him at a signing. We shared the same birthday, October 12. I told him that at one of the record signings through his manager. He stood up and shook my hand very gracefully and loved to hear it. Lovely man!
Splendid, and re- united forever now! Remembering their Bohème under Carlos Kleiber at the MET, one of the most touching performances I ever attended. Rest in peace.
At this early point in Pavarotti's illustrious career, the sky was the limit. You have only to observe how he opens and shapes his mouth. The notes, high and low, flow easily and the sound is beautifully lyric. In the course of his career Pavarotti strove for more volume and power, something his natural voice did not permit. He opened his mouth too wide and too much; the voice did not resonate as in the past but, who cared? Least of all Pavarotti who had, by this time, established himself as the leading tenor worldwide with acclaim across the board. Pavarotti effectively, conscious or not, sacrificed art for economic gains, as is every artist's right to do. But based on potential Pavarotti did not achieve the results that his prodigious talent augured. Make no mistake. Pavarotti was, throughout his career a superb tenor and his achievements were many and, most of all, well deserved. He will go down in operatic history as highly ranked among all singers in general and, tenors in particular.
Shlomo Hoffert excellent comment. He lacked discipline in many things. He became more of an entertainer than a classical singer. Still-pretty darn good!
Oh my God, the two kids from Modena, both singing together and so young with such fresh voices that's hard to convince oneself they're both gone. Mirella was my favorite verismo soprano for a long time and Pav's voice was so special and more so when that young . . . have a knot in my throat...
I LOVE LOVE LOVE FRENI and always loved the way she would make sure she had enough moisture for those notes! Just glorious....RIP....childhood friends united!
Rosebud39 Find a video of "Pavarotti Lincoln Centre 1980". By 1980 LP had learned to breathe, which he attributed to working with Sutherland. In 1980 Pavarotti is in complete command, you can see his unparalleled confidence as he nails every note - and is breathing much better than here. LP is solid here, but 1980 Lincoln Centre surpasses.
Always my favorite Zerlina--no one could touch her in that role. And, of course, superb as Mimi and Micaela. Just yesterday acquired her recording of Figlia del Reggimento!!
I am very very sad I can't explain it in words... Sadly im not born in the 60s so I maybe could hear both of them in their prime.... I hope they singing together this night and this aria❤️
I have a recording in studio of Manon Lescaut by Puccini, singing Manon; Freni and Her partner Pavarotti. Hearing both of them, is a wonderful experience.
Pavarotti is the greatest ever!!! Blows me away ever time!!!! Perfection!

It clearly shows in this particular performance, that they had been friends as far back as childhood.. their chemistry together is unforgettable!
Unworldly power and expression. What a beautiful treat. Both from Modena Italy living on the same street and growing up together dreaming of being opera singers.

These two wonderful Italian singers grew up in the same town of Modena, Italia. Riposa in pace.
They shared a wet nurse.
Pavarotti era de otro planeta , impresionante
No tenor voice comes close to his, his power and crispness was truly awesome, even at his heaviest he still had it, and that’s what years of practice brings 🙌
Beautiful !!
This is sublime! Freni looks beautiful and Pavarotti is so slim!
Luciano- “c è freddo fuori” ...and you can feel the cold December air sweep through the music.
Mirella IS Mimì , vocally and in the simple ways she had on and off stage .

Bravo Luciano and Brava Mirella. BEAUTIFUL FROM BEGINNING TO END. May you both RIP.
PAVAROTTI VOZ inigualável eterno. SAUDADES. DUETO FABULOSO.
MEMORABLES!!!!! UNICOS !!! VOCES,TECNICA,INTERPRETACION
Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Marvelous, sublime
An operatic match made in heaven. No equal today sadly.

94 imbecile.
Two voices in perfect harmony! I love singing Mimì thanks to Mirella Freni: her interpretation of this role is still the best.
Simply the best.
Bravo!!!!!

So young Pavarotti.
I was fortunate to enjoy young Pavarotti few times, but sadly I missed Mirella Freni. Now they are in a Glorious Heavenly Duet, RIP.
I hope they are reunited and singing together again tonight. I had the pleasure of seeing both Pavarotti and Freni many times. May she sleep sweetly and be blessed for the joy she brought to us here on earth.
Were you born in 1926?
They aren’t reunited. They’re dead. The afterlife is a man made invention to assuage fears of mortality

We all know he was other-worldly, but I had forgotten how incredibly beautiful her young voice was. Stunning singing.
I'm sure in 1968 and later he sang three times better.
Dos voces bellísimas, jóvenes... Soy feliz de ver esta joya.
Nunca os olvidaremos.Fantastico
When he sings "al retorno" and she sings "curioso" the smile that lights his face...very telling, Rodolfo.
Just now discovered this posting. Thank you, thank you as I’ve never seen the young Pavarotti and appreciate this wonderful performance.
There are not a few other treasures from his early years on RUclips - both videos and audio.
Mirella Freni magnifique diva...superbe voix...soeur de lait de Luciano Pavarotti !!!
2 voix inoubliables !!

R.I.P. , FRENI !!
Ora Mirella e Luciano sono riuniti in cielo RIP 😥 😥 😥 SUBLIME E DIVINA MIRELLA 💖😥😥😥
Loved La FRENI in "FEDORA", at the Metropolitan, everything she sang was GORGEOUS.
Luciano is my favorite.
Pavarotti the best ever. Non ha paragone. Potete ammirare altri cantanti, ma Pavarotti è unico
Franco Corelli was the best.
Pavarotti is the best of all time. Corelli was like bariton.

@@leonardodavinci2218 LMAO. what the hell
@@Loulou-sr3tk no, he wasn't
Many have never heard the younger Pav sing. He was amazing as was Freni.
Gorgeous. ❤️
Freni is absolutely gorgeous, heavenly in this footage. To be in her presence must have been an amazing experience.
It was. I saw Miss Freni several times and once backstage in San Francisco following a performance of Manon Lescaut.
I played on her recording of verismo arias. She was amazing but very down to earth, NO pretense! I had tears during some of the takes.
Absolutely mirella freni has the most beautiful voice .This is great thank you so much ...
Mirella was, with the two Renatas, the greatest italian soprano of the XXth Century RIP adored Mirella!
A far more understated yet dignified finale than the modern versions seen. Wonderful.
Magnífico!!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE FRENI and always loved the way she would make sure she had enough moisture for those notes! Just glorious....RIP....childhood friends united!
Wonderful. His performances and recordings with Freni are superb.
This Pavarotti I can hail! He was right when he said that he was at his best in the mid sixties.

Maravillosos
Mirella Freni(1935-2020) and Luciano Pavarotti(1935-2007) in their best roles La Boheme Mimi and Rodolfo
It is always splendid to see these two singing together
Due tesori immensi dell'opera !!!
I would have never recognized Pavarotti. Mirella was so pretty and a super soprano
Always my favorite Zerlina--no one could touch her in that role. And, of course, superb as Mimi and Micaela. Just yesterday acquired her recording of Figlia del Reggimento!!
I concur. To me she just seemed like the most natural “person” although she was playing a role.
Bravissimi ! A joy to see this from Pavarotti's early days. The year I was born !
Wowwwwwwww Lucianoooooo 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

so young ... it is beautiful

Freni is lovely and Pavarotti looks like the athlete he'd been in his youth!
I would have loved to see/hear them in the final act. I would cry my eyes out.
Amazingly beautiful!
Amazing ❤️❤️
Pavarotti at his best. A splendid Puccini/Verdi lyrico-spinto tenor.
Also Scotto in her vocal prime --
These old recordings are just so amazing
