    My personal tip when studying which also applies 80/20 rule:
    Pretend that you have procrastinated and tomorrow is your exam. Try to learn just enough to barely pass the exam within 1 day.
    A day after that's done then you start dividing your study material. This fictive 1 day later exam is a good warming up, fast learning technique and a reminder that you might end up in that situation 1-2 weeks later when your real exam starts.

      @@sukhqazmi5837 I also love Friends. I personally don't necessarily agree with Ali on not watching TV either--obviously spending five hours watching TV instead of doing your homework isn't good, but in the evening watching one episode of Friends is totally fine. People commonly overlook the concept of taking care of yourself when they try to be as productive as possible (at least that's what I've seen). And yes, when somebody in my class doesn't get a Friends reference my teacher made (iconic tbh), everyone's like O_o

    Seriously, how many people can actually say that?

    • @AlloftheGoodNamesAreTaken
      @AlloftheGoodNamesAreTaken 4 года назад +82

      Charles Cheng His statement is the biggest problem with all the productivity gurus. I like a lot of what they have to say, there are a lot of good tips that I find helpful. But the lack of awareness that nearly 100% of the people in the world are absolutely not in control of what they can do with their time reeks of privilege and “dominant group.”

    • @SandDune11
      @SandDune11 4 года назад +17

      OIdStudentMom but you are in control of what you’re doing with your time, just think about it

    • @AlloftheGoodNamesAreTaken
      @AlloftheGoodNamesAreTaken 4 года назад +56

      @@SandDune11 Wouldn't that be a perfect little world? I am in control of maybe 20% if I'm lucky. There are other variables including social status, race, gender, where we live, education, employment, etc, etc, etc, that go into how much control we have. We are no more in complete control of how we can use our time *100%* than we are in control where we were born or who we were born to. Now, if we want to talk about how we use the little time we DO have control over (and some of us honestly do not have that, maybe you could look into how the impoverished and oppressed and enslaved of the world are forced to live) then that is worthwhile. But to claim we are in complete control all the time is to lack awareness of how the vast majority of people in the world live.

    The life-changing book for me was a book called The Now Habit. I can't overstate how much the principles in this book changed my life; without it, I'd never have gotten into med school or achieved any of the things I'm most proud of. It's quite different (and, I'll even say, better) than Getting Things Done, because it explores procrastination as an anxiety problem - people read books like GTD and yet still don't apply the principles and then feel frustrated with themselves because they don't know why.
    The Now Habit gives you really simple but profound tools for changing your thinking and your habits. I found the book by accident, and it predates the pomodoro technique (while still describing it, without the name). If you struggle with time management despite "knowing all the tricks," then The Now Habit is your best bet. Not getting paid for this endorsement, though I'd be glad to help the author, Neil Fiore, for all the help his book's given me!

    I completely understand the whole "no TV rule", it is definitely one of my worst habits that I've been unable to successfully kick out. And there is one HUGE reason for this. The reason is that I'm trained to watch TV/Netflix during lunch/dinner. Which is why I end up, at least, spending two hours of my day doing this. What would be an alternative? I've tried reading but I find this extremely difficult to do. Sure, one alternative is definitely talking. But, being quarantined and stuck at home with family does not help with that.

    I went to med school relatively late (at age 35) and that was in 2001. I'm not a fan of excuses, but I do think that it's way harder to focus today than when I was in school. The internet was around, but not like today - we had Palm Pilots, which allowed you to keep medical reference materials handy, but they weren't necessarily connected to the internet at all times; cell phones were just becoming popular but weren't permitted to be on in the hospitals. Getting down to work was much easier bc there weren't so many distractions. I'm glad I'm not in school these days, though I think your tips are really helpful!

    At last, I understand Pareto Principles :
    20% of your effort resulted in 80% of the outcome!
    If I applied it to studying Maths and Physics, that means 80% of the result that I got in the exam came from 20% of the content (the basics). To master the exam, I should focus on the basics rather than the specifics. Thanks for opening a new mindset for me, Ali.

    I only use the command space bar on my mac, cause I am super lazy.
    But at the same time that helped me to remember many article authors and the topic they published about (I save articles by author year journal key word). When I am writing a paper, and I need to check again the results from the original article, I only type the first author last name and open the article in a sec.

    So you're telling me that the way you have time to be a doctor, youtuber, etc. is by having an IOS extension that saves you literally seconds and by learning to type faster?
    I wish this video wasn't about concepts like the 80/20 rule and arbitrary computer extensions, but a real life view into your schedule. How much time do spend on different tasks a week? What does your calendar look like?
    I think an answer to these questions would be a far more helpful video.
