  • Hello Everyone,
Ollie here and back with another Starcarft 2 1v1. This time Terran vs Zerg.
    Another game of Silver League!
So the shoe was on the other foot today, when instead of sieging in a TvT 1v1, i was sieged. Great news though, i broke out and managed to inflict a lot of pain.
    Hope you enjoy :D
What I'd love to know is where you think I can improve.
As always, I'd love your feedback and comments, I'm enjoying getting better with your help!
Look forward to chatting next time.

Well done! This is exactly how you use vikings and siege tanks in TvT. You get extra vision from your air control and then you inch forward with your tanks while he can't see them. You can also get a liberator with the vikings to deal with the enemy tanks more easily.
Also big fan of that stim marine drop.
A couple of quality of life tips again:
-Use ctrl+click instead of double click to select all units of the same type. It's just more consistent and less finicky.
-When you unload medivacs on the ground, it is very slow and awkward and you can easily accidentally cancel the unload. Use the unload command on the medivacs themselves instead and they will continue to unload while you are moving them around.

Okay cool, I was wondering how to do the medivac thing, I’ll give it a go

Great improvement with your tank and viking usage, and maximizing the tanks' range by getting more vision. And your marine drop was great too - excellent use of stim, stutter stepping, and gunning down priority targets. Well done!
Worker production was good, though they weren't balanced very well, as you noticed quite late. As you saturate each base, make sure to rally new workers to the next unsaturated mineral line. And don't forget more production structures; you've been queuing lots of units at once as a crutch of sorts to spend your money. While that's certainly better than not producing at all, it is far better to have get more barracks/factories/starports as you expand to new bases. A tip on this: you don't have to wait for the buildings to be complete to add them to your control groups. Pop down 3-4 barracks and a factory and immediately add them to your groups once construction starts, and then you don't have to think about them again at all. Very minimal attention invested and massive benefit as your army grows far more rapidly.
    Keep it up, GG!

Overall, you handled that contain well. You didn't die to it, got air superiority, and counter attacked. Often, a contain means very little defending. Biggest critique here is that you should've added another starport. The key to breaking a contain is air superiority. In the early game, it's hard to get enough marines to actually run over the tanks so it's better to use air. Your medivac drop was also very well controlled. You stimmed, jumped the tank, and targeted expensive stuff and workers. Couldn't have done better myself.
I recommend you build a bunker at your natural asap. It's a pretty safe thing to do and delays you very little. It's also because you fast expand instead of going double gas. That bunker will protect your natural against a lot of harassment options like reaper hellion. It also shits on proxy rax if it's not reapers going in your main.
At 7:55, it's better to leave with the vikings and hit somewhere else or retreat. It's pretty unlikely they'll kill that command center and killing the gas SCV's is not worth the APM at this point. Also, in most circumstances, I recommend using a medivac full of marines. Vikings are usually more important for air control at home, though in this case, the enemy didn't make enough vikings anyways.
At 9:19, you should've just bum rushed him. You had enough marines to overrun his one tank. Just make sure to siege your tanks too instead of using the regular mode.
At 10:29, I'll note that this is the correct call. When you do a drop, one medivac is enough to cause chaos, 2 is enough to do damage, 3 is a big investment and better do a shit ton of damage. Don't drop with unfilled medivacs. That's just wasteful. A doom drop could've worked. In this case, don't load the medivacs, take a group of marines and tanks and walk them to the other side of the map, top right corner to be safe. Load there, and drop them into your opponent's main. Siege the tanks. Profit. If you load this early, you may get intercepted and losing that much will often end the game.
At 12:14, you opponent was screwed with you sacking his third but you could've stomped on his balls too if you sieged the tanks closer to his main. A big weakness of Terran is that if your production gets camped, you're screwed. Really the only thing that could save you from marine tank camping your production is flying away, doing the same and base trading, or you have BCs popping out.
Now I say you did well counter attacking, but the best thing to do would be to break the contain quickly and get him back. It's ok in that circumstance because you had the available vikings and medivacs made, but usually tank viking contains are countered by constant viking production. Get enough vikings, your enemy loses air control which lets you make a liberator to run off his tanks. Your tanks, while not in range of his tanks, should be close enough to stop the liberator from getting jumped by marines or cyclones.
What I'm describing is a one base build that hits much earlier but similar concept to breaking it here, though often you'll just have enough units to plow through at that point. TVT in that stage is all about out positioning the enemy and making sure they can't siege in range of your base. Your opponents build was pretty weird. He went for a contain but he also had a second base. This will not work later on. If you go greedy and offensive and your opponent has less bases at that stage, the opponent will have more units to just plow through.

5:28 You’re oversaturated on your main. You should transfer workers to you natural and reset both rally points to your natural so new workers will automatically go there.
Also, while you are in the habit building stage, build a habit of muling your newest base. There are multiple reasons for this, but it all comes down to mining as quickly as possible while “mining out” (emptying the mineral clusters) as slowly as possible Half of the mineral patches in your main mine out around 9 minutes if you aren’t muling it. You can make that happen a minute earlier if you’re muling it and that speeds up your expansion schedule, exposing you to attacks earlier than necessary. So mule your natural until you have a third, then mule your third.

gg well played.. 2 points. at 6:02, don't jump in to the liberator/tanks, this is like jumping into the fists during a fight. Finally, at 11:00 your main army should be attacking/checking the opponents 3rd base while you did the marine/medivac drop. simultaneous attacks are strong. overall, good improvement.

9:20 your thinking here is spot on. To execute, you need to siege up just on the edge of range. I think tanks shoot one tile further then they can see. If you hadn’t rolled into vision, this maneuver would go better for you.

GG. Good way to avoid supply block - put your factory SCV on a control group, after he builds starport put him and one other SCV on nonstop supply depot duty til you’re maxed.

This was awesome you did so well handling that you focused well on macro I will say that we want to be taking care of those supply blocks preemptively. You want to act as if you will get supply blocked 5 supplies before we actually do every moment supply blocked is pretty big. It's going to start making a bigger difference as you go, same for upgrades esp. when in a mirror match. Your responses were really great, but you took a moment on remembering to make your third. Made up for it though with all the harass he was so occupied camping you he didn't defend very well.
Your very first trade was not the best he was setup at that point you just build up and make your setup so if he attacks in you get initial advantage, and counter attack into his units while they retreat. While doing that though a key thing to watch is for his tanks sieging up you have to do so at the same time or have the ability to kill them before they start firing. It depends on how things look.

Yeah, I was a bit rusty in a few areas but overall I think this is the best technical game I’ve played so far.

Silver and thinks about scouting! Won't be silver much longer. This is how to win. Do more than one thing better. For you, this game, economy (1), spending (2), placement (3). In order for his aggression to pay off, the attacker has to do damage, else gets left behind on economy. Correct to go after workers - the soft target. Opponent should have moved tanks close enough to hit your main, and positioned air so tanks could see further.

17:29 I disagree, you made a good decision expanding north because your opponents army could still be in the other expansion(and the widow mine WAS there). You are not terrible, this was common sense. Also this map has two 3rd expansion options so your expansion is completely valid and can be considered a "gamer with average thinking skills" move.

Totally agree with everything in this thread. FYI, the triangle third is very standard in this map. Even Zerg take it and Zerg hate having a triangle of bases. That said, your opponent took his third as his second base which is decidedly hilarious (and much worse than taking the linear third as your third). In this game, with pressure. feeling like it was coming from the left, a perfectly intelligent adjustment is to expand away from pressure. Well done.

15:52 Stop. Look at how many resources you are floating vs. his resources. This is why you won. Yeah, he could've pressed the attack earlier after your mistake. But you spent your resources, he did not. Which you can STILL be much better at.
I want to judge your build order, your unit choices, your strategy in general. None of that matters right now. Spend those resources and make sure you have the supply to allow you to do so.
