Toppling the Cosplay Satan | Doug Wilson

  • There is always some crazy story to write about, isn’t there? So over the last few weeks, this happened. A Satanist group arranged to have a Satanist display erected in the Iowa State Capitol building. Iowa. This garnered attention in the first instance for obvious reasons, and also because a state representative, Jon Dunwell (also a pastor) said that this was a grand display of pluralism, and that we should all be good with it. Let each one be fully persuaded in his own mind, as the apostle said.
And then things moved to the next level when Michael Cassidy engaged in a mostly peaceful act of deconstruction. He toppled and beheaded this cartoon Satan, believing that if something needed to be done, then why shouldn’t he be the one to do it? And why not now?
Someone then made the whole thing a little bit more festive, as if that were necessary, by putting one of Canon’s “Christ is Lord” stickers on the forehead of the toppled idol. We can think of no better application, and are quite tempted to let this be the sum and substance of our commentary.
But alas. Some Christians still need to be reminded that Satanic idols in the public square should be considered as a bad thing, and should not be treated as though it were a good testimony to our commitment to pluralism and diversity. The reason this reminder is necessary is that there is another idol, and a much better looking one, that has been erected in the hearts and minds of not a few American Christians. This shinier idol, meaning the myth of a neutral secularism, has not yet gotten the Cassidy-treatment, although it has been begging for that treatment for some years now.

“Live and let live” was a spontaneous cooperative agreement of nonaggression between opposing sides who were entrenched on the Western Front during the first year of WW1. It lasted over a few days during the Christmas period of 1914 where both armies agreed not to attack as a show of good will. Once allied leaders got wind of that they put an end to it and it never happened again. The next Christmas when opposing forces offered the same truce it was met with raids and attacks. All that to say we are in a time of serious spiritual warfare. Though some may think extending olive branches of tolerance to opposition will somehow win them to our side, make no mistake, their “leaders” see this as unrelenting warfare and have commanded their forces to advance and occupy at any sign of weakness.

Satan is not a cartoon for sure. Modernity is filled with idolatry without the image of Satan. Yet that's what people do, worship him or something other than God unwittingly. I don't think the apostle Paul was inspired to tear down the false gods of ancient Greece/Rome though. Holding out Gods Word & walking in it seemed sufficient.
We don't live in a vacuum, if society rejects God, it is sure to fill it with something else.

Jesus drove the money changers out of his Father’s house - his own house, not Caesar’s house. Some Christians are claiming this nation is “ours” but the Bible says we’re sojourners in Babylon. There’s the rub - over-realized eschatology. Until the King returns and brings his people out of Babylon into the fullness of the Promised Land we live in enemy territory.

Jesus the Christ is God and King, and his word is eternal. The constitution must be subservient to the eternal law of God. Remove that divine footing, and the entire edifice of human law crumbles into a heap of standardless absurdity.

Once again, Doug mocks the American system in which the government is neutral to religion, but allows it's citizens to participate in any religion of their choice. Doug is wrong on history, our founders knew what a mess state-sponsored religion was, and they rejected it. SHALL NOT ESTABLISH RELIGION sounds really clear to me.
Also, here's Doug's syllogism for everything.
1)God is necessary for X(where X=logic, morality, politics, ham sandwich......)
2)X does exist (can't you see the ham sandwich)
    3) Therefore God exists (thank God for ham sandwiches)
Please note that you could insert anything for God, and this "proof"still works. Doug is proof that smart people believe silly things.
