“To pretend they [Angels] do not exist because we do not see them is like pretending that we never sleep because we have never caught ourselves asleep.” -Fr. Walter Farrell, O.P.
The Catholic church firmly teaches the existence of angels, both good and bad ones. It is based on faith in divine revelation, but God has revealed to us the reality of angels and demons. And by doing so, He is telling us something intelligible and wonderful. So, we want to understand the angels as much as possible, in order to understand the ways of God and the ways of the spiritual life.
Angels and Demons (Aquinas 101) - Fr. James Brent, O.P.

Several years ago I had a violent motor car accident. Just before the impact, one voice prompted" This is your end" another voice said" NO just hold tight the stearing wheel, you will be OK" I listned to the second voice, I lived unharmed. In real life this communication is impossible due to the time factor. The above video now explains me how it was possible. Many thanks and Gods blessings for the staff of Aquinas 101 for the wonderful work.

My father had some kind of intervention that saved him from an accident. He felt a pressure on his chest suddenly and it led him to put on the brakes right before a car crashed into the side of another just ahead.

From actual personal work with plenty of angels, demons and other spirits the truth is more complex than simple childish good vs bad guy ... demons can be helpful not only in material concerns but in spiritual evolution as some were taken from older religions . The whole underground myth of reclaiming parts of ones soul, a profound shadow working myth common in older religions ,crucial part of heroes journey from joseph cambel.Lucifer translated as lightbringer is one most important forces for our evolution , enlightenment and illuminating the dark labryths of underground aka unconscious. Thats lucifers function a deity taken from greek patheon, sadly malicious forces confuse it with satan.

I can’t understand people who deny the existence of Satan. I am tempted by him on a daily basis . The devil is behind terrorism, drugs, pornography, violence, bad thoughts and moral relativism. But Jesus defeated death and sin. We have nothing to fear if we pray and receive sacraments frequently. The demons run away from Saint Michael, our Lady, blessed water or a cross. And our Gardian Angel is always there to guide us. Ángels are seeing God constantly while they take care of us

It is a tragedy that the Aquinas treasure is hidden from so many, not only in the world, but also in the Church. Thank you, Dominicans, for making this treasure available online>

When the Priest speak about angels being present at the mass he speaks of the presence of the saints in the same breath. "Together with the Angels and Saints let us pray". My question is how is the presence of the Saints at the Mass is to be understood. How it would be similar or different from that of the Angels.

    • @ThomisticInstitute

The distinction that he draws in the video is instructive. One can be present in a place locally or by exercising influence there. The saints exercise influence insofar as they worship God and minister to men in peculiar fashion in the context of the sacred liturgy.

They are presented in an excellent format and appeal to my mostly analytical way of understanding. Every one of them enriches me tremendously. I am in my “senior” years but still very much seeking more communion with God. I have also been listening to some of the podcasts. Sadly, these instructions are not found at the parish or customary meetings. I have been sharing some with my son who has stopped practicing. Thats why in prayer and meditation we are silent we silence our mind! Cause the way of communication of the Angels who are pure spirits with intellect and will is through silence! I remember the saying in the corridor of a college Catholic School it says Speech is silver Silence is Golden! K

Thank you for this teaching. It is literally a gift. I am a bit confused however, and I hope you can clarify something for me. If angels are the ones who give us inspiration to pray more during the mass and help man to be more intellectual Then what does the Holy Spirit do? I always understood it is the Holy Spirit who leads you into deep worship and personally I even feel He allows the transcending of Good ideas from God to man.

You're absolutely correct and the two sources are not in conflict. Sometimes the Holy Spirit does so directly, sometimes through the mediation of angels, sometimes through the prayers of the saints, sometimes through the inspiration of a beloved friend. God (the Holy Spirit) is not just one cause among causes. He is the universal cause operative in and through all particular causes.

Does St. Aquinas comment on how the angels interact with us in Scripture? You explained the influential manner, but would the manner in which St. Raphael guided Tobias was of the first kind? Given a capacity to be contained therein?

Wonderful video! Question: You say the world of angels is silent, but does not scripture tell of angels singing and praising God? And aren't angels given food by Abraham and he washes their feet? Does Aquinas adress this? Thank you again for the video!

Hello, wonderful work and very clear video. I'm wondering however, since God is all-powerful, why does he allow demons to exist still? He could in a split second, if that, just make them cease to exist since those are guaranteed to never repent, right?

I see the angel as patterns of being, like when someone is angry, he can be possessed by that anger, or by the god of war in another perspective.
The same is true with a positive spirit or mindset. What make you believe there is an existential reality beyond a pattern in our minds.

I really enjoyed the video, but it left me with a question -- How do the angels influence physical events or phenomena if they have no physical presence themselves? So, for example, how did the Angel manifest the pillar of fire that led the people of Israel through the desert? Can an angel only do so with if God wills it, or can an angel do so according to its own desires?

Hi, could anyone enlighten what was happening in the Book of Tobit and Angel Raphael? Was he temporarily contained by God on earth or was he merely exercising his influence? The latter is a little hard to believe seeing as the book seems so literal.

Is there a Thomist way to analyze the nature of Artificial Intelligence (including large language models (LLMs)) that can closely follow the human intellect - and may have superior knowledge compared to an average human? AI agents can also communicate knowledge very efficiently - by transferring weights present in their models.
Is there a reason to believe that there are essential (insurmountable) differences between humans and LLMs -- as the LLMs do not (yet) have bodies; they cannot suffer and cannot receive God's grace?
