Shooting a Mossberg .30-06 a Thompson Center Compass .308 and a Savage .223 thru stacked drywall to evaluate bullet penetration. Stacked drywall is pretty tough!
The biggest problem with people comparing the 30-06 and .308 rounds, is that they use generic cheap ammo, not the kind people usually hunt with. With 125-150 grain ammo 308 and 30-06 are fairly compatible, but go up to at least 180 grain and up, use better more consistent ammo, and you will see that 30-06 is much more faster, more powerful and flater shooting round. .308 is very abundant at stores compared to 30-06, so it's a trade off. I hunted with a 30-06 for years. Was great for whitetail deer. I dropped my gun from a tree stand damaging the gun and the Redfield wide field scope. Redfield replace the scope for FREE in spite of the fact that I was honest and told them that I had drooped from 15 feet up a tree. I zeroed the gun shooting one inch groups several times. The total tight group would move 8 -10 inches. I shot so many times that I started flinching before gunsmith told me the barrel was moving around. I went to 270 with good hunting. Now I was considering a new 308 because I am concerned about ammo availability in a survival situation. I thought that the 30-06 was vastly superior to the 308 but now feel that due to 308 potentially being more readily available, thanks to your test, I’m comfortable with the 308 as my choice.

But one of our neighbors put one up in the edge of our woods without asking for permission to do so, I have let it go for the time being. Our woods is small, 4-5 acres, not many deer. Getting back to the guns, I think the .308 is a good choice for the reason that you mentioned. Most of the gun stores seem to have .308 ammo, not so much for the .30-06 in our area. I have been trying to get my hands on some .44 Mags, but dose not appear that is going to happen anytime soon. Sorry for over talking. But, thanks again and take care and good luck with the .308.
That's the same reason I went for .308, wanted more stopping power than a 5.56 at longer ranges. Would want a 1 shot 1 kill so went with .308 instead of 5.56 potentially needing follow up shots. The .308 not as common as 9mm or 5.56, but still better than a lot of other calibers during an end of the world situation

308 by NATO standards was designed to be similar since it's lighter ammo. Easier to transport. Long range my money would be on 30-06 is most cases. But but the 308 certainly maintains itself even with long range shooting. Never black or white with rounds. My rifles are ww1/2 rifles. I mainly buy 30-06 ball for that reason.
I have a question.... If you are using the same stack of drywall for each round then would not the drywall be weakened allowing the rounds to travel further?

Not true - The 308 goes deeper in water. Reason: It's smaller and has less push against the water. The size of the 30-06 hinders flow thru water. When you use drywall, it has a lighter density. This is why it goes further in drywall. Now think of animal flesh - is animal flesh closer in density to water or drywall...

This is good! I would like to see a test of how many walls these rounds would go through. Make sample walls with insulation and 2x4 with the dry wall. Shoot from a distance 10 or 15 feet to represent shooting inside a house. Or mimic shooting through an outside wall going inside with typical siding on the front panel. Thank you!

The test is entirely invalid. The shock of the first round would have significantly degraded the integrity of the drywall's structure and the second and third rounds would have therefore behaved differently upon penetration than would have been the cae if you'd had a seperate stack of fresh drywall for each caliber (which would have made the test credible).

Hello good sir, nice to see some sensible folk that just have fun doing some shooting, the kind that are a bit more challenging to find nowadays. I did have a few suggestions though. I don't want to start comparing you to other channels or saying your video wasn't nice (because I did enjoy watching) but another test that a RUclipsr named WHO_TEE_WHO did was paper plates, and concrete pavers. I don't know if you've already done those or if you would want too, but it could be cool. And I like the slower pace of your videos, not everything has to be all fast paced all the time.

The drywall test was something I was vastly more curious about than concrete walls or paper plates. In a home defense situation, drywall penetration is the most important test to know as most homes aren't made of brick nowadays. Unless you lived out in rural areas, using these rifles rounds could go through many layers of homes before stopping. One of the basic rules of firearm safety is to understand what is behind your target after you shoot. You are responsible for every round you shoot, whether it's hitting a burglar your neighbor's children
@@Logan-py8we Different guns shooting different ammo, different distance etcetera. Maybe not duplicating someone else's test exactly, but someone shooting a heavier bullet at close range out of a longer barrel is not going to get the same result out of the same caliber as farther away, lighter bullets and/or shorter barrel length. That line of logic is like asking why seeing one guy hunt deer should be interesting if you've already seen someone else do it. Because it won't come out the same each time, especially not if you are changing some of the parameters of the way it's done.

A friend of mine, who does building, suggested that I build a couple layers of fake wall that would resemble an exterior wall (with all the pieces) and then shoot thru a couple of those to see what actually happens.

308 and 30-06 range of bullet masses overlap so they often use the same bullet. 30-06 case is larger and so it is possible to make it more powerful than 308, but usually they are loaded with the same amount of powder. This is because originally the 30-06 used slightly less powerful powder since it was introduced earlier than the 308. So to avoid overstressing older rifles designed for the original 30-06, often 30-06 is only loaded to the original pressure even though that leaves excess case volume with modern powder.

Drywall stacked against each othet in layers is much harder to penetrate than same with spaces between sheets

The test is entirely invalid. The shock of the first round would have significantly degraded the integrity of the drywall's structure and the second and third rounds would have therefore behaved differently upon penetration than would have been the cae if you'd had a seperate stack of fresh drywall for each caliber (which would have made the test credible).

Hello good sir, nice to see some sensible folk that just have fun doing some shooting, the kind that are a bit more challenging to find nowadays. I did have a few suggestions though. I don't want to start comparing you to other channels or saying your video wasn't nice (because I did enjoy watching) but another test that a RUclipsr named WHO_TEE_WHO did was paper plates, and concrete pavers. I don't know if you've already done those or if you would want too, but it could be cool. And I like the slower pace of your videos, not everything has to be all fast paced all the time.

The drywall test was something I was vastly more curious about than concrete walls or paper plates. In a home defense situation, drywall penetration is the most important test to know as most homes aren't made of brick nowadays. Unless you lived out in rural areas, using these rifles rounds could go through many layers of homes before stopping. One of the basic rules of firearm safety is to understand what is behind your target after you shoot. You are responsible for every round you shoot, whether it's hitting a burglar your neighbor's children
Why repeat tests somebody else has already done?
@@Logan-py8we Different guns shooting different ammo, different distance etcetera. Maybe not duplicating someone else's test exactly, but someone shooting a heavier bullet at close range out of a longer barrel is not going to get the same result out of the same caliber as farther away, lighter bullets and/or shorter barrel length. That line of logic is like asking why seeing one guy hunt deer should be interesting if you've already seen someone else do it. Because it won't come out the same each time, especially not if you are changing some of the parameters of the way it's done.

A friend of mine, who does building, suggested that I build a couple layers of fake wall that would resemble an exterior wall (with all the pieces) and then shoot thru a couple of those to see what actually happens.

308 and 30-06 range of bullet masses overlap so they often use the same bullet. 30-06 case is larger and so it is possible to make it more powerful than 308, but usually they are loaded with the same amount of powder. This is because originally the 30-06 used slightly less powerful powder since it was introduced earlier than the 308. So to avoid overstressing older rifles designed for the original 30-06, often 30-06 is only loaded to the original pressure even though that leaves excess case volume with modern powder.
