Agree, I am 57 and have had 270 mod. 70 about the same amount of time:) Was raised hunting mule deer and elk in western Colo. where a "close" shot was200 yds if you were good or lucky:) I received it as a pre-teen from a neighbor for shoveling snow:) luckily he had compassion ( hard headed ex marine) about hitting targets(kill shots) at 300 to400 yds ,made me and his son do that before he would hunt with us :) and he shot his 30.06 all the time at 500 yds. that was not popular then, unlike now where everyone is a sniper:( from movies and video games:( can still hit pie plate targets at 250 yds with the mod 70 :) just for tmi my other deer rifle was a restored 303 british ( 100$) my teenage friend I traded it too still hunts with it:). Be safe and pass it on thx. Rick
Exactly. Just because John hunts with a 30.06 and joe shoots a .308 don't make a difference. They both will drop anything one would encounter in North America.
@@edwardhill1739 If a 1000 lb brown bear is coming after me I’d rather have the 30:06 with a 220 grain bullet than a 308 any day. I have shot at big trees with both and the .06 definitely has more penetration power.
I worked with a WW 2 Army Veteran in 1980. He was in the Italian campaign and he told me if a German was behind a big tree he would just shoot the tree a few times and the German would go down. He never talked much about his actions, but when he died they listed his awards. He had many including a Silver Star.
In WWII lots of guys were shooting armor piercing ammo. That will diffenatyly penatrate more than a standard bullet. You have to com;are apples to apples.
308 and 30-06 stay close together till you get into heavy bullets. I personaly love 30-06 due to the history and my uncle used that caliber when he was a sniper.
I have an 06 case necked to .358 with a 250gn bullet that comes shockingly close to a .375 H&H. I wish I had a collection with an 06 case at each caliber!
@@juenbuggs we were sitting around one night at the shop and necked down a 30.06 case to. 17hmr. Just for looks. But now I want a custom rifle chambered for that.
I'm waiting for a company to make a DPMS AR-10 style 30-06 semiautomatic rifle. Several companies make them for 308. I realize that's more of a battle rifle standard, while 30-06 is more of a hunting cartridge, at least these days. I understand why the 308 was developed. They wanted a shorter cartridge. Still, 30-06 in a modern semiautomatic rifle would be great. So far, the only one I know of, is a modern BAR, and it costs $6,700.
Nope. Welcome to physics. A difference of around 150fps will remain constant regardless of projectile weight. There's a reason the NATO standard is 7.62x51. Here's another hot tip. The 30-06 ammo used by the US military was downloaded when compared to civilian 30-06. This was done due to military range constraints. The downloaded 30-06, was nearly identical to .308 loadings....Weird..
@@225degrees- Re: "The 30-06 ammo used by the US military was downloaded when compared to civilian 30-06. This was done due to military range constraints." The original 30-06 loading used in the Great War, World War One, was a 150-grain spitzer (pointed) flat-base bullet (G1 ballistic coefficient of .405) fired at ~ 2700 fps. Its claimed maximum range was 4700 yards, but that estimate was later shown after the war to be incorrect, and during the war U.S. troops firing the cartridge from medium machine guns had also noticed a discrepancy. When tested to full distance, the M1906 cartridge actually had a max. range of 3300-3400 yards. During that era, long-range harassing and interdicting machine-gun fire was considered important, so work began on a new projectile for the 30-06. In 1926, M1 Ball/FMJ was introduced, using a 174-grain jacketed boat-tail bullet with a BC of .494 and a MV of ~ 2647 fps whose maximum range was approximately 5,500 yards. At that time, standard practice was to use up old ammo stocks first for training & drill purposes, and since wartime surplus amounted to some two billion rounds (!) of M1 30-06 ammunition, there was a lot of it to be used. By 1936, it was discovered that the maximum range of M1 Ball was beyond the safe limits of many firing ranges, in particular National Guard ranges in many eastern states. A rush order went out for production of a cartridge essentially duplicating the old M1906 cartridge, and in due course, M2 Ball arrived in 1938. It utilized a 152-grain FMJ-FB projectile backed by IMR-4895 (or its equivalent) @ 2800 fps. It's maximum range was 3450 yards. Military 30-06 was not "downloaded." per se, compared to civilian loads; it is simply the performance specified by the War Department and the Army. Their testing had to take into account not just how the cartridge would function in a bolt-action, but in automatic weapons such as the Browning BAR, Johnson light machine-gun, and M191 Browning medium machine gun. For the 30-06 case, a 150-grain bullet at 2800 fps is not in any sense a "tame" or weak load. While it is possible to squeeze another 150-200 fps out of it in a bolt-action, there would have been no reason to do so in a military-pattern firearm. It would have increased recoil, hastened wear-and-tear, and hurt accuracy for only a modest gain in power and range. When propellant chemistry advanced during/after WWII, thanks to R&D at DuPont and elsewhere, it became possible to achieve the same performance with a 150-grain bullet using less propellant and hence a shorter case. If you have ever seen a round of M2 Ball sectioned or taken apart, you will note that the powder load did not entirely fill the case anyway. That also helped the designers of 7.62NATO/.308 when it came time to shorten the older cartridge. That's how they moved from 7.62x63 to 7.62x51.... As a rule of thumb, loaded to its full-and-maximum potential, bullets etc. alike, the long-action 30-06 will deliver 150-200 fps greater MV than the short-action .308 Winchester/7.62x51 NATO. The shorter cartridge keeps pace, performance-wise, until around 175-180 grains, when the greater case volume of the '06 begins to really tell...
I asked my dad the .308 vs. 30-06 question a few years ago. He said that with a rifle barrel up to 22” in length, there’s not much difference in performance between a .308 and a 30-06. He said that the.308 seemed to be more consistent and more accurate, shooting the same 150 grain projectile. His theory was that you needed a longer barrel length to burn that extra powder and gain the extra velocity of the 30-06 cartridge.
Yes please make then 100 yards at least so we can have a better idea of doa energy. And penetration of projectile. Also projectile type verse weights of grains versus velocity. All this adds of to killing power. Like elk it 1500 ft pounds of energy at point of entry of projectile. Deer would be like 1200 ft lbs.
Since the 308 was designed to be "just like the 30.06" ballistics wise, the results make perfect sense. After all, it was designed for the military with specific requirements to be like the 30.06 only in a smaller form so that more ammo could be carried. Yes, the 30.06 has a small, insignificant in practice, advantage when looking at the numbers but would a deer say..."hey, shoot me with at sissy 308 would you"? I think not. LOL
@@NorthCountryOutlaw To be honest, Savage put an *excellent* recoil pad on my Axis .30-06-- To the point I was amazed at how light the recoil was the first time I shot it... That said, I shutter to think how bad a metal-butt plated rifle would have been...
@@NorthCountryOutlaw In my experience, with factory loads, not much difference. To Grilled Cheese's comment though, you can load the 30-06 a bit hotter than the smaller 308 so with a reload I suppose there could be.
Agreed. I love my 308,243,260 however that extra 1/2 inch the 30/06 has over the 308 represents hundreds of feet per second, and effectively pushing the heavy for caliber bullets.
The issue is that while the 30-06 can theoretically be made to handle heavy 200+ grain bullets, most off-the-shelf rifles don't have the twist-rate to support that theoretical advantage. Also, while there is obviously more case-capacity, the maximum pressures for the two are different, with the 308 having a higher safe maximum pressure. The ability to load hotter in the 308 is usually enough to make the cartridges more-or-less interchangeable. - The 30-06 isn't less effective just because it's a 100 years old, but it is designed around powders that are more-or-less outdated.
@@TROOPERfarcry No they are not that close. The added capacity of the 06 allows me to push a 180 gr bullet to extremes wherein the bullet will still expand upon impact. Not so the .308, to achieve good velocity at distance a lighter bullet must be used. I have nothing against the 308 but from much experience I sold my 308 and kept the 30-06. If you want to test a 308 against a rifle fairly close then test it against a .275 Rigby. The advantage of the 308 is the shorter case so it can be used in short action black rifles.
The comments are killing me who tee,😂😂😂😂. The proof is right there for all to see. Nearly identical performance. But the oughtsixers out there just can't handle it! Lol. # but the 06 destroyed the paver more than the 308 did. Lmao! God love em! I think the 30-06 is one of those magic calibers. So versatile. Love it. But to argue the difference between it and the 308 is so silly to me. If you own one of these you truly have no need of the other. Get something else in a different "bracket". Lol. Great video. Great, Finally someone gave a side-by-side that meets perfection. Thank you. This is rare: a nice review of all components in the test validates your result. BL for new buyers...go for the cheaper ammo between the two, the gun design features you like best or the bullet that you have available to reload with...Personally, I divested 30-06 and ramped up 308 about 10 years ago.
Probably already been said but..... The difference widens when you start separating bullet weights. Most 308 win loads top out around 168 to 180. Most 30-06 tops out around 220 grains. Speed kills but weight carries through
I've had mostly ,308s in my life. My dad always told me a .308 will effectively kill anything on this continent. He also had a 30-06, and he and my brother always had 7mm mags. I've never had a problem with my .308 big game rifle, so then I bought an AR-10. STILL .308, STILL NO PROBLEM.
30 odd 6 is still more powerful. They were standard issue during WW2. Just imagine the Germans and Japanese were known to take a few of those rounds and still not go down in some cases.
Very interesting, I love the video. I've used .308Win in hunting rifles and the H&K G3 (or rather 7,62x51 NATO in the AK4 as the G3 is called in the Swedish army), but never tried the .30-06. I almost got myself a rifle in .30-06 a few months ago, but decided against it as the ammunition is a bit more expensive than .308Win here i Sweden. Seems like I made the right choice, Why pay more for something that doesn't seem to deliver any benefits. On the other hand, I usually don't hunt pavers....
I love the 7.62x51 but I don't personally own the rifle. My only experience with it was in the Marines with the M14. I have friends with AR-10s and have shot them. And other 308 bolt rifles. Great round. The 30-06 (7.62x63) is as well. I have old WWI/II rifles that would do better than the rifle used in this example. You are correct though, the ammo is more expensive for little gain.
Cool test. I really like both cartridges. I think the benefit of the 30-06 is not realized until you load heavy bullets 180/200 +. But even then the 308 isn't far behind. I'd like to see the same test 30-06 vs 35 whelen . When you look at the ballistics of the 35 whelen it's hard to imagine it has the same case as the 30-06. Thanks for sharing 👍
@@stevenhigby3512 I hate to break the bad news to you but the 30/06 is around 17 1/2 lbs of recoil while the .308 is around 16 lbs pounds of recoil @2700fps with a 150gr projectile with around a 8lb rifle.
I'm a .308 guy but I really thought the 30-06 would break 2 pavers. Great video. Thanks for giving us something to enjoy during this lockdown time brother.
I like a 30-06 because it can load from110gr to 240gr. And it can be loaded with a big variety of gun powder. It also uses the same powder as a 6.5 creedmoor that Iike. like.

Distance between blocks also has to do with it. Place the slats up so there is 1/2 inch between the blocks , then place clay between the blocks. The kinetic energy will transfer thru and bust more blocks.
Appreciate you watching! I work crazy hard at it on top of my real job. Yeah a lot of people say that, but the average watch time of my vids is only 4 minutes. People skip ahead to the good parts
Nice video. 308 seemed to do a little less damage. The 30/06 seemed to Disintegrate the first block and had a bit more Energy to move the third block. Nevertheless two great rounds. Me personally i love my 30/06 its my most go to gun for all purpose. Again nice video. Be safe and hello from Watkins Glen new york.
You have to take into consideration what velocities are present at the target and what projectile differences there is . Projectile softness and construction differences can skew the results also . It appeared to me that the 30-06 projectile expanded more violently and broke the first paver in more pieces . That would translate to a larger wound channel . I have used 308 W and 30-06 a lot and I have no doubt that the 30-06 with the heavier bullets it can push has more killing power than a 308 W .
Would of been interesting to see if a heavier bullet used in both guns would of made a difference? 30-06 just pushing the same bullet out about 150fps faster.
With the lighter bullets this is very true. 30-06 doesn't typically really shine until you use heavier bullets with slower powders....then the 30-06 shows it's true potential. Of course many hunting loads below 170grains both will be so close that for must the difference will be negligible.
If you're taking suggestions on what calibers to test out, I'm gonna throw .25-06 in as my suggestion. I have one, a Ruger M77 Hawkeye, and it's my favorite deer rifle. They also seem to be highly underrated and somewhat unheard of these days. So if you ever get your hands on one you know you'll get an thumbs up from me for ever video it's in. In addition to the thumbs up I give all your other videos, haha.
I have a Ruger American in.308 & a Remington A303 in 30-06 they are both great rifles & not for sale! I also inherited my grandfather's Winchester model 100 in .308; I have take several deer with both calibers & didn't have to track a blood trail very far! I have also take deer with my Winchester 94 30- 30 & my Ruger Blackhawk in .45colt. So I wouldn't hesitate to use any of my guns to take a deer or big game. I am a big fan of the 30 calibers for taking big game, guess I'm just old school my late grandfather believed in being a sportsmanship and the one shot one kill skill set...we are meat hunters & if the buck had a nice set of antlers, well that was a bonus! So keep up the great videos! & like my hero Roy Rogers always said" May the good Lord take a liking to you & HAPPY TRAILS" ( I actually got to meet Roy jr.( Dusty) Rogers at a concert in my hometown before he retired from the Son's of the Pioneers and He is one of the kindest, gentlest, most humble of Christian men that I have ever met!)
just the difference in the pavers build. u could shoot it again and the 308 will blow the paver in more pieces than the 3006. not all pavers are made equal
Fantastic as always. I always like the comparisons between these two cartridges. It was great that they were the same bullit same gun Perfect . Keep on keepin on, T
Appreciate the test and all your work. Not sure it proves much however unless we start hunting pavers. My guess is a 44 mag would do pretty much the same thing at this range. Both these are tremendous calibers for almost anything in the lower 48. It also might be more fair to compare these two with a normal loading of 150 for the .308 and 180 for the 30-06. As an example if you were comparing a 26-06 to the 30-06 you would use different weight bullets for a fair comparison even though the 30-06 could also shoot anything the 26-06 could. In off the shelf ammo the .308 has the advantage of being a newer round and not downloaded for older guns. When I started hunting I bought a 30-06 because I waned to hunt elk and moose besides deer. I still think a hand loaded 180 Nosler Partition at 2700-2800 is a wonderful killer and has always done it for me. When in Alaska I always thought when hunting moose that it would suffice for big bears if you happened to bump into one even if not the first choice.
Should have went with a heavier load because the 30-06 is a much heavier round I prefer the 174 grain match but for absolute drop ‘em on the spot knockdown I shoot 180 grain for distances over 250 yards give that a try against the .308 them we’ll see which is better
30-06 is a much heavier round: exactly! you're using a long action rifle with a cartridge half an inch longer and 15-25% more powder for what? 100-150fps extra? if you add another 0.15" length use can use a 300winmag instead :) Also, nothing stopping you from loading heavy bullets in your 308 either. Fired 220gr @ 2450 fps handloads once with plenty of pressure safety margin even with lower CIP specs
Great video Just goes to show that all things equal at close range the lower velocity will do almost equal damage but the higher velocity will preform better at longer distances. That’s why the magnum cartridges are so popular.
The only difference I can see is stopping power, they both only went through one. But, the 30-06 completely demoed the first brick. The .308, seems to have only cut it in half. It’s a matter of, how far do you want that deer to run? Lol
When I was a kid hunting with my Dad he had a Winchester .348 that he carried all the time. I would love to see it compared to a 30-06. Thanks for the videos. I really enjoy them.
From handloaders perspective I like the 06 better than the .308. When you use 180 gr or heavier bullets the 06 has a little better punch at longer range. But other than that the .308 will do anything the 06 does and with less recoil.
Agreed. 06 is normally loaded ~ 180 gr and 308 at ~ 150 gr. I understand that takes away from the equal equation but perhaps try standard loads for each in the test. I have both rounds and they are fine for each rifle I have for them; I hate to give up the old 06 rifle as it's such a smooth shooter and actually lighter than my 308.
Nice to see a comparison using the same rifes and the same grain of bullets. So many comparisons are done with different rifles and different grain of bullet which makes as much sense as comparing apples to oranges. Great job!
A light bullet like he used in this test is not what you would want to use in a 30-06. If you are going to use light bullets the test would have been better served to use a .308 and a .275 Rigby. Cinder blocks and water jugs are not good penetration targets.
Both the 30-06 and the .308 are grandchildren of the 7x57. The .473 head diameter on the brass in the teller. Both the 308 and the 30-06 are great elk hunting rounds but after owning both I sold my .308 and kept my 30-06. A large bullet will still expand because of the extra velocity at longer ranges with the 06.
Well done and I hunt with both of those calibers and it seems like I usually lean more towards grabbing the 308 over the 30-6 mostly because the 308 seems to have a little less recoil than the 30-06 but then many times I do hunt with my 30-06 and I have never lost a deer or anything else I've shot with either caliber due to not having enough power.
Somebody once said you won't see an advantage out of the 30-06 until you get to a 24" barrel length. I seem to remember that the Ruger Americans full size are 22" so this result made sense.
i grew up shooting 30-06 for deer, although it worked best in lighter weights (150 gr.) than the heavier bullets which didn't expand so well for medium game. I've learned to love the .308 though, and you can't beat its versatility and wide availability.
@@legoyoda8037 30-06 is for real men. 308 is for men who have soft shoulders. You can't send a 190-210gr .308 downrange... And the 178gr you do send is going the same velocity as a 195gr 30-06. In no way is the 308 better. Cheaper is about it and it's not by much.

When I started reloading 30-06 rounds for my Garand and .308 rounds for my M1A, I noticed they use the exact same bullet and the same amount of powder. The only difference I could see was the 30-06 had a lot more empty space in the case. Why wouldn't they have almost identical results?
Your observation is correct: Propellant technology during the time of the Second World War was not as advanced as it later became. The 30-06 case was not filled to capacity when firing a 150-grain bullet, as in the M2 version of the cartridge. This is in part because the M-1 Garand, the world's first widely-issued self-loading military service rifle, was not designed to fire high-pressure hunting loads of the kind used in bolt-actions by hunters of big game. You needn't take a bear-hunting cartridge to war; something suitable for medium game - such as deer - is quite ample to the task. The "empty space" as you term it was the 12mm case length they removed to make the short-action 7.62x51 NATO (or in civilian guise, ,308 Win.). Modern propellants made it possible to get the same level of performance out of the shorter case with the same caliber/weight and type of bullet, an FMJ or ball round of ~ 147-150-grains at about 2800 fps. Both the M-1 and M-14 like powders in the IMR-4895 or IMR-4064 burn-rate range. Military ammo contracts were filled with propellants with similar specs, but blended in custom lots. However, the two cartridges are not equivalent in every way. The longer 30-06 case, when loaded with modern propellants and projectiles and to the limits of its design, hits harder and shoots farther than the short-action .308. It is also capable of handling heavy 190-220-grain projectiles which are too much for the short-action .308 (Yeah, you can use 'em in a .308 case, but they don't perform as well as they do out of a long-action case).
Or perhaps WhoTeeWho could crawl his way up the calibers to see what it takes to crack one of those mischievous rascals, starting with the .22lr (I am quite convinced that an air rifle won't cut it), and see where we end up. It doesn't have to be super scientific, just whatever affordable ammo he can get his hands on 😄

Do a vid between a bolt action 30-06 vs a semi auto 06. It would be interesting in seeing how the difference in actions effects the ballistics. You could use your Ruger and a Remington 742.
I know a lot of the community tries to say there is not much of a difference but honestly when I shoot each I feel it, 30-06 has a clear advantage in power, the .308 still is an awesome cartridge!

Same bullet and same velocity with that light a bullet. The 30/06 handles heavy 180 grain and 200 grain and 220 grain bullets at higher velocities then the 308.
We used the same test at My gun range using 6 papers but the ammo was military steel core in both calibers ! The 308 damaged 3 pavers with damage to face of 4th . The 30-06 made it thru the 5th with superficial damage to the face of the 6 th ???
Wasn't that to accommodate automatic fire? Something about wear and tear on all the li'l bitty parts of machine guns. I vaguely remember something about the ranges the average conscripted infantry engages the enemy at, rarely exceeds 75 meters (roughly 84 yds) for riflemen and 400 meters (roughly 450 yds) for machine guns. Probably a different story for armies not based on conscription, but back in the days of the 7.62x51, most NATO armies were either entirely or to some extend based on conscription. I could be miles off . . .
That was a proper test, same brand, same bullet weight, same rifles. Well done, although I would have bet money they would both go through at least two of them!
The 2nd block when shot with the 30-06 looked like it was flexing in the slow mo, that was pretty cool. Another caliber to throw in the mix just 💩 and 😂 would be the 7.62x54R.
I just found your channel today. I haven't heard "who_tee_who" since Gomer Pyle was doing owl calls back in the 1960s on either the Andy Griffith Show or Gomer Pyle USMC! It brings back fond memories! I'm going to have to watch more of your videos. I'm surprised both cartridges only broke one block with the 147 gr. FMJ. I'd like to see you do the same test with a bonded core bullet from both the .308 and the 30-06. Since the core of a 147 grain 30 caliber FMJ isn't bonded to the jacket, and the core usually has some antimony added to make it harder, I think the cores are separating from the jackets, then the cores are shattering. I think a pure lead bonded core 150 grain soft point would actually break two blocks because the core wouldn't shatter and would stay attached to the jacket. Could you give that a try?
The powder charge in the .30-06 must be comparable to the 7.62mm NATO, which makes sense as both are Winchester with likely identical bullets. Though it’s not marked so, that .30-06 is likely safe to use in an M1 Garand without bending its op rod.
Didn’t matter much here, but you shudda changed out both front pavers after the .308, since the 2nd paver was smacked back a little. That might have weakened it slightly, so two fresh ones were in order for the .30-06 shot.

I worked with a WW 2 Army Veteran in 1980. He was in the Italian campaign and he told me if a German was behind a big tree he would just shoot the tree a few times and the German would go down. He never talked much about his actions, but when he died they listed his awards. He had many including a Silver Star.

It's when you get into the heavier bullet weights is where the mighty 30-06 shines.
👍👍
Try 180gr
I have a 30-06 Savage purchased in 1975. It has never let me down. Why change?
This was done due to military range constraints."
The original 30-06 loading used in the Great War, World War One, was a 150-grain spitzer (pointed) flat-base bullet (G1 ballistic coefficient of .405) fired at ~ 2700 fps.
Yea.. but the 30-06 should be a 250 minimum for full force. If this was a 250+ grain it would have went through probably 3 pavers
I agree with your Dad and always have. That is from a 30-06 user.
I'd really like to see some of these calibre comparisons done out at 100m or 200m.
Yupp same here. I might make a video myself. Its always up close.
@snaggletooth that is how physics works 😉
Right. A real comparison would measure things like drop over distance, velocities, etc.
Regarding the same projectile, further distance will not change anything in this test setup
LOL
@ bira: A deer really did say that to me once... no really!
Which is why I've been shooting .30-06 ever since! True story...

I believe 30-06 is more versatile when handloading. I would choose 308 if i didnt handload. Great vid just my opinion. Thumbs up
-
The 30-06 isn't less effective just because it's a 100 years old, but it is designed around powders that are more-or-less outdated.
@@TROOPERfarcry nice thankyou
@@TROOPERfarcry i have my grandfathers woodsmaster carbine remington . it kicks a ton only fired it 3 times

When it comes to penetration, weight matters. If you're punching paper, not so much... If you're punching game, it matters big time.

The 3006 will perform better in ballistics and damage in a wound on big game, its about velocity to open bullets at different distances.
Cool test. I really like both cartridges. I think the benefit of the 30-06 is not realized until you load heavy bullets 180/200 +. But even then the 308 isn't far behind. Well done mate! Same rifle and same projectile! Thanks from Australia.
Thanks for comparison!

100-150fps extra?
if you add another 0.15" length use can use a 300winmag instead :)
Also, nothing stopping you from loading heavy bullets in your 308 either. Fired 220gr @ 2450 fps handloads once with plenty of pressure safety margin even with lower CIP specs
Great video
Just goes to show that all things equal at close range the lower velocity will do almost equal damage but the higher velocity will preform better at longer distances.
Thanks for watching!

Great job!
i was surprised, ithought the 30-06 would go a little farther. i am a 30-06 fan boy!
A light bullet like he used in this test is not what you would want to use in a 30-06. If you are going to use light bullets the test would have been better served to use a .308 and a .275 Rigby. Cinder blocks and water jugs are not good penetration targets.
i do prefer God's round as well
though i load mine with more grain than the guy did in the video
My search was 308 Vs 30.06. This was straight up. I still lean towards the 30.06 but hey. I can not argue this. Great video!
30-06 has little advantage over 308 ! I'll take the 308 myself. I've owned both
If they called a 3006 a 308 magnum you wouldn't sell 308... There is no replacement for displacement....wake up fool.
@@chrisacd5895 tell all the people at camp Perry that im sure they will understand you lol
@@chrisacd5895 they still sell 38 special
Both the 30-06 and the .308 are grandchildren of the 7x57. The .473 head diameter on the brass in the teller. Both the 308 and the 30-06 are great elk hunting rounds but after owning both I sold my .308 and kept my 30-06. A large bullet will still expand because of the extra velocity at longer ranges with the 06.
@@russellkeeling9712 i like the 25/06 better for my needs. It shoots farther than its bigger brother
Yep both cal, are great tuff to pic, one off the rack when I’ve got time to shoot so I bring. Both
Well done and I hunt with both of those calibers and it seems like I usually lean more towards grabbing the 308 over the 30-6 mostly because the 308 seems to have a little less recoil than the 30-06 but then many times I do hunt with my 30-06 and I have never lost a deer or anything else I've shot with either caliber due to not having enough power.
Somebody once said you won't see an advantage out of the 30-06 until you get to a 24" barrel length. I seem to remember that the Ruger Americans full size are 22" so this result made sense.
Do 45-70 vs. 500 mag. Next!
i grew up shooting 30-06 for deer, although it worked best in lighter weights (150 gr.) than the heavier bullets which didn't expand so well for medium game. I've learned to love the .308 though, and you can't beat its versatility and wide availability.
308 is a smart option.
30-06 is for old people that have been hunting with core lokt rounds for 40 years
@@legoyoda8037 30-06 is for real men. 308 is for men who have soft shoulders. You can't send a 190-210gr .308 downrange... And the 178gr you do send is going the same velocity as a 195gr 30-06. In no way is the 308 better. Cheaper is about it and it's not by much.
@@legoyoda8037 Respect the old man who walked the path of darkness... and lived. With that taken cared of... the 30.06 is known as a hunting round for 60 years. The .308 is a military round. Appreciate you watching Pete
When I started reloading 30-06 rounds for my Garand and .308 rounds for my M1A, I noticed they use the exact same bullet and the same amount of powder. The only difference I could see was the 30-06 had a lot more empty space in the case. Why wouldn't they have almost identical results?
Your dead right, only when you go above 190 grain projectiles is the 3006 going use some of the extra case capacity with a slower powder.
@@blackhat2385 I tend to use 220 grain
I really enjoy your videos. Comparison-wise for me I would like to see 22 WMR versus 17 HMR that would be cool.
👍👍
Or perhaps WhoTeeWho could crawl his way up the calibers to see what it takes to crack one of those mischievous rascals, starting with the .22lr (I am quite convinced that an air rifle won't cut it), and see where we end up. It doesn't have to be super scientific, just whatever affordable ammo he can get his hands on 😄
My 3006 blows holes through trees that my friends 308 can't🤷♂️. Also I've seen 308s get deflected by brush while my 06 just goes right through. Making it a much better brush round.👍
That was fun! 30 6 has more smack n scoot but pavers are tough it won't crack beyond one
45-70 vs 300 Win Mag... Make it rain concrete!!
👍👍
I really enjoyed this video. My first deer gun was a Remington 700 30.06 that my Dad bought at JC Penney. Now, I shoot 308...the ammo is cheaper.
Thanks for watching Clifford!
🙋🏻♂️ hello from Sweden 🇸🇪
Are the scope still working for you? Do they hold zero?
bullet disintegrates on impact, shoot stacks of paper.
Yay! Pavers! Been waiting for this since you shot that trailer hitch ball! 🙆♂️🤷♂️💁♂️🤷♂️🙋♂️🕺🙅♂️🤷♂️🙋♂️🤷♂️💁♂️🙆♂️🕺 [me doing the ancient chinese obnoxious dance of way too festive commotion]
I have scraped my knees on pavers. I have loaded and unloaded tonnes of pavers with my bare-ish hands (wore gloves most of the time). I have swept piles of left-over cracked pavers 'till I was blue (or purple) in my face. I was left with the task when a foreman knocked over a 1.6 tonnes pallet of ten by ten inch pavers with the fork loader, piling each and every knocked over paver on an empty pallet, and throwing the cracked or splintered pavers in a dumpster. I even dropped a 2½" twelve by twelve over my foot. If I hadn't been wearing steel cap boots, I'd broken my foot (I did scrape my shin and performed a wicked dance of loud commotion). Pavers are so-o-o great when they are neatly tugged in, shoulder to shoulder, making a nice and walkable pavement. Up until that point, pavers just [whooooooot]. Thank you for extended my long overdue wrath to two of those mischievous rascals! I will celebrate with a cup of gunpowder tea, "borrow" a cookie from my daughter's cookie jar, and repeat my dance of commotion! 😄😄😄
PS: both calibers did an outstanding job, the footage was awesome, and thumbs up to Jerry for sending the ammo, and HeavyMetal for the pallet idea.
30:06 rules.
@@codealtf4logn779 why not ?
Because well not only is 30-06 too big for most animals, it may not be legal. .308 is very common.

When I want to compare I use a chronograph.
That forward and reverse combined footage is something that I miss and should be used more often.
Let’s get sum 10 gauge 3” magnum action.
Sir. All 10 gauge rounds are 3 1\2".

Thanks but I was talking about the what's the power of the scopes.. 3x9x50??
Hootie something I would really like to see and I've wondered for a long time comparing equal barrel lengths between a semi-automatic pistol and a revolver on 22 long rifle does the forcing cone and cylinder Gap Rob enough energy 2 affected in penetration on milk jugs Joe security Oklahoma
Hmmmm. Semi auto vs six shooter same caliber same barrel length. That's a great idea.👍 darn you! Lol. Now i just have to know!
Love my '03 Springfield Sporterized military 30.06...
Little known fact the 7.62x51 is actually lower pressure and velocity than 308 Winchester.
Surprised me!
The 2nd block when shot with the 30-06 looked like it was flexing in the slow mo, that was pretty cool. Another caliber to throw in the mix just 💩 and 😂 would be the 7.62x54R.
Good idea
Why? Nobody cares about that obsolete Russian round, try to find Ammo for that . Lol
Id take the .308 less recoil and a .243 same casing all you'll ever need for everything!
The powder charge in the .30-06 must be comparable to the 7.62mm NATO, which makes sense as both are Winchester with likely identical bullets. Though it’s not marked so, that .30-06 is likely safe to use in an M1 Garand without bending its op rod.
06 seemed to slap it harder and throw the concrete more.
Safe to say you own 30-06? Lol.😂😂
@@garytrainer748 safe to say if you watch both shots the concrete explodes out more with the 06.
Safe to say both bullets only broke one single paver.
Like to see a long range comparison out to 500 yards and more
Didn’t matter much here, but you shudda changed out both front pavers after the .308, since the 2nd paver was smacked back a little. That might have weakened it slightly, so two fresh ones were in order for the .30-06 shot.
