    Tim is my favorite Robin for one simple reason: he chose this. He looked in the mouth of madness, saw people suffering, and jumped right the hell in for no reason other than wanting to help and feeling like he had the power to help.

      A good reason to admire the character. However, I don’t believe it was Tim’s only reason for undertaking the role of Robin. His father was killed, so there’s that, even if he was a criminal. He also needed direction. He was sort of a wayward youth. And this was a way to find fulfillment. He was also a self proclaimed detective, very intelligent. And this provided ways to exercise those deductive powers. And then, he’s a male youth, and a mischievous one at that. This gives him action like he’s never experienced as a little street hood ne’er do well.

      @@marktomlinson838 Tim parents were alive when he became Robin, his mother died while still in training and his father was placed in a coma. His dad was released and healthy while Tim was still robin but did lose his dad around the time Tim was 16. Tim becoming Robin was a bit complex first he wanted Dick to go back to being robin since he knew how much Bruce needed a Robin, but Dick didn't want to leaving Tim volunteering to become Robin. So yeah he became Robin because it was the "right thing to do" but also to keep batman sane since Batman was becoming reckless after the death of Jason.

    I personally think the "toy commercial" mentality that pervaded _Batman and Robin_ is what damaged Robin's character the most in that movie. Like, instead of finding a way to organically add Barbara to the Bat-Family, they just have Dick constantly fail and be insufferable and have Babs show him up at all times, because he's the old toy and she's the new toy.

    • @SeasideDetective2
      @SeasideDetective2 Год назад +4

      I wish I could say that writing Barbara (*sigh*) Wilson as (implied) British was the movie's biggest mistake, but it's still a glaring error. What makes it worse is that Alicia Silverstone, though born in San Francisco, California, is the daughter of two British immigrants, which makes Alicia practically British herself. She would have heard "foreign" accents at home all the time growing up, so I don't think it would have been asking too much of her to master one herself. Either that, or just make her Commissioner Gordon's daughter just as she's supposed to be, and in the bargain allow Jim the sympathy and dignity he deserved in BATMAN & ROBIN and didn't get.
      All that said, except for Arnold Schwarzenegger's atrocious performance as Mr. Freeze, the way Robin was handled is the thing I hate the most about BATMAN & ROBIN. I can look past Batgirl judo-flipping him, but the real insult is having Batman throw him into a vat of ice cream - and in a scene that wasn't even supposed to be funny! As I understand it, the script originally called for Robin to be punched out, which also would have made me cringe, but at least then he probably would have learned his lesson.

    • @loudboy317
      @loudboy317 Год назад +4

      What's worse is that the movie made Batman into a hypocrite. He criticizes Robin for almost getting killed by Mr. Freeze but Batman forgets that he too was almost killed as well. Mr. Freeze trapped Batman in a rocket that was going to fall back down and blow up all of Gotham City. Then, during the car chase, Mr. Freeze fires his freezing cannon at the batmobile essentially putting Batman on ice. Batman was a real jerk to not recognize his own mistakes until the very end when Poison Ivy puts up the Robin signal.

It's equivalent to a Special Olympian beating all the non-disabled people in a foot race because all the rest of them were shot in both legs just before the race.

  • @shanekixmiller2133
    @shanekixmiller2133 Год назад +7

    And can we please talk about how amazing both of the robin suits from those films were? The first suit from Batman forever was a fantastic and modernized, practical update on the original Robin suit. The suit from Batman Robin was basically Nightwing with a cape. I f****** love this Robin! I think it's pretty impressive that they knocked it out of the ballpark with a suits for this character. And also doing it so early on. The 1990s aren't well-known for fantastic looking superhero suits. But if you ask me, besides small little flourishes like the Arlo go in several different spots on the suit. Probably could have done without it in the middle of the mask in the first one, this suit looks practical enough and well not designed to be used in a modern superhero film from today. And that is amazing for something done through the span of 1995 through 1997. And also, like I said before, for it being the first time this has ever been done in a movie. Before this, the only live-action Robin we hit ever seen was the Adam West Batman show and the serials from the 40s. But I totally agree with what you said about how different the character is from film to film. He looks fantastic. But he had far much more depth and meaning in Batman forever, which is still the most underrated Batman movie of all time. Yes, the studio mandated that it'd be more child-friendly and campy, but it's still a pretty dark and awesome Batman film. And even Robins character reflected that. Batman & Robin 1997 just turned everyone, including Robin into cartoon characters. Although I did find the idea of a rift between Batman and Robin, with Robin wanting more recognition and to step out of Batman Shadow very interesting and it's a shame that we couldn't have seen that played out in a different film. You can say whatever you want about Batman and Robin, but I'll always love that movie. Just because it's so bad that it's good. I don't understand how anyone couldn't be endlessly entertaining when that movie is on. It is literally a live-action cartoon episode. But I'm getting all over the place now. The whole point of this comment was to give props to the costume design from both films. Kudos. And kudos to you as usual for this video, I've always loved your stuff! Besides myself, LOL, I feel that no one understands these characters as well as you do.

    I always loved Chris O'Donnell's portrayal of Robin. And just his Robin in general. Didn't really fit much with the comics, but it was kind of its own thing. But it worked. And even when it was bad, for me, it was still good. I love this Robin. Hollywood has seemed to be afraid to do anything with the character since 1997 and I think that's a total shame. It seems that James Gunn's new iteration of Batman will feature and focus heavily on Robin. Literally for the first time since 1997. That really says a lot. Yes, Ben affleck's Batman continuity mentioned a robin, but we never saw him. Except for his burnt up and destroyed suit sitting in the batcave as a memorial. I grew up in the 90s and Chris O'Donnell has always been my Robin. And I'm proud to say that.

    I remember going to see BATMAN FOREVER at the age of 14 and thinking that, wow, this version of Robin is a lot edgier than Burt Ward's or Loren Lester's (Lester having voiced Robin for the early '90s animated series). Even after seeing Burton's films, I didn't think I was quite ready for a "dark" Robin. I remember thinking, "Where's the wisecracking teen I know and love? Why are we getting this rage-filled emo kid?" (Yes, the word "emo" wasn't around then, but that was more or less what I was thinking.) Ironically, however, as I've grown older I've come to appreciate O'Donnell's character arc as one of the best things in the movie, and a welcome antidote to Jim Carrey's Riddler wackiness. I remember reading all the fan media about BATMAN FOREVER at the time, and recall that in one interview Schumacher referred to Dick Grayson as "a gypsy lad." He might well have been referring to the actual Romani background Grayson was given in the '90s comics. In any case, it's obvious that the screenwriters had Grayson's "real" backstory in mind when they had O'Donnell mention "Nightwing" as one of his potential hero names.
    One of the very best lines in BATMAN FOREVER comes when, having just donned the Robin costume Alfred has made for him, Dick says to Bruce, "I can't promise you I won't kill Harvey." What's not emphasized enough, I believe, is not only that Bruce takes this bit of news very well, but WHY he takes it well. It can't be stressed enough how significant it is that Dick says "Harvey" rather than "Two-Face." Bruce knows upon hearing this that Dick - much to his own reluctance and resistance - has forgiven Dent, and now wants nothing more than to see (legal) justice done. Grayson now understands that refusing to become a killer himself is the best way of mastering Dent. (It's also interesting that, in his own way, Two-Face himself also wants to see justice done, and interprets his near-death at Robin's hands as a potential example of this.)
    Watching this video, incidentally, has made me aware that we desperately need a Vee Infuso vid on Alicia Silverstone's Batgirl. More to the point, we need a devastatingly mocking takedown of someone we all know is not the "real" Barbara Gordon (okay, "Wilson," but let's not split hairs). Admittedly, the Barbara of the comics is a bit too much of a "Mary Sue" character, so it's always welcome to see an alternative take on her. But I've long suspected that the fourth film could just as well have been titled BATMAN & ROBIN & BUFFY, because the Batgirl of this movie is very similar to the original portrayal of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER's Buffy Summers. Both characters - or versions of characters - are products of the '90s, and to me that's no coincidence. Feminism in the '90s, or pop-culture feminism at least, was a joke: pretty much just a superficial "girl-power" foundation with a heaping helping of "In case you hadn't noticed, I'm a silly girl!" dumped on top. So what we get from Silverstone is a youngster who is highly skilled, but lacking the conviction and discipline needed to be taken seriously. That's been a major problem in Hollywood: it's been capable of giving us young female characters with flaws, but since those flaws are being childish and funny, they are endearing to us, and so they aren't really flaws at all. Say what you will about today's "woke" and "girlboss" heroines, but at least they're presented in a way that allows us to take them seriously.

      The year was 1966. I was eleven years old when Batman first appeared on TV. I fell in love with Robin, played by Burt Ward. Since then I didn't miss a single episode. For me, Adam West campy portrayal of Batman was so boring and anoying. I couldn't care less for him. But Robin was clever, full of energy and handsome. Indeed he was the reason to call the pair - the Dynamic Duo, because West's Batman was too slow. I've been Burt Ward/Robin fan since then. Also went with my father to see the Batman 1966-1967 movie. When the series ended, I followed the reruns. In those years, Google did not exist. For decades I did not hear any more of my idol, Burt Ward. I compensated this by buying comics, suscribing to Teen Titans and have preserved those issues in mint or near mint condition. In the nineties finally a Batman movie came to be. But without Robin. I had to wait more years until these two movies came along: Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. And I was so grateful that Chris O'Donnell was portraying Robin. It was a good selection. A great and talented actor with the handsome look and beautifull mesmerizing blue eyes, reminding me of my dearest Burt Ward's. I love O'Donnell excellent portrayal of Dick Grayson/Robin preciselly because the writer included his origins. It was a DREAM come true for me that I thought that would NEVER, ever happen in my lifetime !: I was finally seeing Richard Grayson's parents (there wasn't any brother - but I didn't care), I was given the opportunity to see the moment they were killed, and more than that,... to see his expression, to evidence his sorrow, to see him somehow crying. Later to see him in Robin's and somehow a Nightwing outfit...cool. And to include romantic and kissing scenes.... more INCREDIBLE. That is why I despice all of those comments ridiculizing these two movies because they do not know what is to WAIT for DECADES until a cleaver writer and producer give Robin the place that he deserves, a soul of his own, and the script lines of a young enthusiastic man - as Burt Ward my forever Robin portrayed before, now represented by Chris O'Donnell.

    Dick being flipped by Barbara is in no way him being beaten and isn't some silly showcase of weakness.
    Bruce is controlling and overprotective. I think that's the point of this arc. He's pushing Dick away out of his lacking of allowing someone to take their own risks. Dick's not a kid, arguably. I think it's suggested he's in college by this point. And he rebels against Bruce's mindset, this PLUS he's influenced by Ivy's pheromones, so I think you're seeing a limited view of this character. As I think Bruce suggests at the end, Dick is still searching for a new family "You weren't talking about being partners, you were talking about being a family." and Bruce isn't giving that. He's treating him like he's a soldier, not a brother.
    Batman is in no way a mark to adhere to. He's a broken kid trying to control the pain in his life.
    Batman & Robin, on it's own, is in no way one of the worse movies ever made.

To choose a better path and bring the man who killed his parents to justice. With him already being established before the film starts. Then the sequel would take place 5 years later, it would be about the story of Under the Red Hood. In between the films, Dick had left and formed the Teen Titans. Then became Nightwing by the time of the 2nd Batman film.

    I really liked O’Donnell’s version. Like this video, I did prefer Forever’s take much better than B&R break down of Robin.
    I truly would have like to have seen his Dick Grayson with Keaton’s Bruce Wayne and his Batman. It would have seems more like father son. O’Donnell with Kilmer was good, but seemed more like a big brother relationship.
    Also as a point of reference on Keaton’s would have been Robin.
    The original actor cast for Robin/Dick Grayson in Batman ‘89 was not Marlin Waynes. It was actor Ricky Addison
    Ricky who was cast as
    Dick Grayson before the character was removed by Warren
    Skarren for the
    revised shooting script. Marlin was not cast until Batman Returns, and also dropped after costume fittings and shooting began. And yes, he did get payed and is still getting residuals from the film.

    There aren't many views you share on our shared passions that I don't agree with, Vee. This is yet another video I completely agree with and I'm very glad you made it. I'm fully on board with the DCU and I actually think sometime in the future the Snyderverse will get another chance if the DCU goes as planned as the new definitive timeline because WB will be more willing to restore it once they have a successful universe and fully established universe that won't leave the definitive DC cinematic universe up for debate. I mention the Snyderverse as I enjoyed most of it very much. For now it is the swansong of Snyder's DC characters sharing the screen for a long time surely. But as much as I am in support of Gunn's vision, if he was always gonna use his influence to end a movie that had nothing to do with his Universe then it shouldn't have been a short Clooney Cameo that ended it on a suppossed Joke rather than a timeline where Batfleck has been replaced by his returning predecessor who played a huge and terrific role in the movie as Keaton did. If that was the ending it would feel apt and would also have left potential to return to veteran Keaton Batman at some point.
    For some reason Gunn wanted Clooney at the end. I could have gotten on board with that if it was more. Just give his Batman and his wonderful Robin a part in the movie instead of the reason he was actually brought back. Imagine something like Nic Cage's Superman but with a bit more screen time. We could even have gotten a look at O'Donnell fighting alongside Clooney's Dark Knight as Nightwing. Whatever the issues of Batman and Robin Chris wears a Robin suit that seems like he's gradually growing into Nightwing. It's too late to hope for him as Nightwing in any way I would think but in a different time for Batman and this Genre he could have made a fantastic Nightwing and I would have adored just a little Screen time of Clooney and O'Donnell as Batman and Nightwing in the Flash. I digress but it's about time WB give the main Bat Family a chance.on the big Screen and Chris was terrific in the role. When thinking of future Robins and hopefully a Nightwing Film at last he really captured what you'd want a young adult Dick Grayson to be and I hope for a new incarnation soon that captures that also

    Chris O'Donnell was Jason. Period. They changed the name to be more recognizable, but until the original Crisis, Jason's backstory was the same as Dick's, except Jason had an older brother.
    In the comics, I think it was Killer Croc that killed his parents, until he was rewritten as the street kid, when Two-Face killed his father ( -may have that backwards- Checked. That's correct).
