For me, Daggerfall's soundtrack is a throwback to another era and time.
The focus of the music is very much on the world and environment, and not on the player. Rather, the player is invited to see and understand their place in a world that is so much larger than them.
That is the beauty and simplicity of the music, it tells a story and brings out a sense of liveliness that the player will think about long after the game's initial popularity has waned years or even decades later.
I am one of those players.

I like Jeremy Soule's compositions, but this evokes a sense of strange eeriness and beauty i haven't seen in any other soundtrack, except King's Field 4. For what i know, Eric Heberling was doing pinball music before Arena. Marvelous work from his part, i can forgive them for recycling the majority of the songs, they are amazing.

      Well said
Daggerfall is so far removed from the modern TES games, but it really started it all. Arena was like an alpha prototype.
Open world games like Daggerfall just didn't exist back in 1996. I played the heck out of this game as a teenager then.

I had forgotten the synth panflutes, which to me reads as the most 90s thing about this soundtrack, but that's part of its charm.

I love to see so many people loving the music who haven't played the physical game. It goes to show how magical, dark, and mysterious the soundtrack is. Even non-fans can enjoy, too.
I believe Eric was doing pin ball sound effects prior (according to a comment here). I wonder how stunned the team was. I can't imagine they were expecting such stellar and unique OSTs, but I could be wrong. A few samples would sell me after all.
But I like to think they thought Eric be a great pick just because he would do it cheap and their budget was tight...and then he gave them THIS.
Eric: "Okay Bethesda Softworks, I made you your OST for *flips through notes*
TES 2: Daggerfall. Hopefully my skills are versatile enough to make a decent soundtrack."
Team: *ears fill with sweet sound* "OH GOD YES"
I also like to imagine Eric was a die-hard Arena fan.

I totally agree with you. The tragedy is that midi tracks (that are used in the game) do not do justice to the talent of Eric Heberling. It's why I made this remaster. To show to everyone that with right instruments and good mixing, Jeremy Soule is not superior to him. By the way, I'm working on the 1.2 version without the harsh ending for looping purpose.

I'm really grateful that there's people out there putting stuff like this together
I was 14 when I got Daggerfall and it blew me away. It was more of an 'under the radar' game back then - long before Morrowind blew everyone's minds.
Open world games weren't a thing back then, and then you had this - where you could just go around being a murderer if you wanted, or a vampire, or a werewolf, or a holy knight, or a mage - it was just incredible.

I was 6 watching my brother play having ZERO idea what was going on in the story (I understood a few side quest and basic game mechanics. As well as the difference classes (I thought elves were the BEST). I think above all, I thought the enemies looked cool, the world felt huge and utterly mysterious to a little me. The graphics were amazing then. I didn't need to understand it entirely to enjoy watching. It was a creepy, open world RPG with no rules and no forced decisions (at least in comparison to other games). My brother could randomly decide to just be evil and that was cool. Or randomly decide to be good last second. Didn't matter, we had fun. I went on to play Morrowind with him years later and those are some of my most precious memories.

i want a Daggerfall remake. The music is so so beautiful

    • @Merudiana-the-local-demoness
      @Merudiana-the-local-demoness Год назад +18

A remake of Daggerfall will not go well. At least not with complete modern 3D graphics like Skyrim, because of how heavily the game relies on procedural generation. And the game won’t be able to have the absolute size and scope that the original did because of how difficult it will be to port that into modern graphics without making it look lifeless. The reason why the world Daggerfall feels so alive is simply because the graphics are primitive, this makes it so that your imagination goes wild and your mind fills all of the blank spaces. If such a huge and empty game world existed with modern day graphics, because the graphics are so good you won’t be able to use your imagination to make it feel more alive and full than it actually is. The better the presentation is, the more apparent the flaws are.
However, if you want a remake that just improves the game and doesn’t use modern graphics…that’s Daggerfall Unity which actually IS a remake. And there’s also mods like DREAM that improve every single texture, make most objects (not NPCs though) 3D, music, real ambient lighting, better terrain generation, and many gameplay mods that add in immersive mechanics like real horses. Modding the base game perfectly improves the look and feel while still being kind of ‘primitive’ enough to allow your imagination to run wild and make the world feel full of life.
Tl;dr: Remakes already exist with Daggerfall Unity, but a full 100% remake with full 3D modern graphics likely won’t be good because the game will need to be streamlined and made far smaller like the recent games in the TES series (Oblivion and Skyrim). Furthermore, modern graphics will limit imagination which is necessary for making the world feel alive even though it’s actually pretty empty (since…you know…procedural generation). Really the true magic of Daggerfall, comes from its being made in the late 90s.
Edit: Oh yeah, I don’t want to insinuate that “Hur durr, modern gaming bad, only games from the 1990s were fun.” I wasn’t even a single cell when this game released, and I grew up in the 2010s (I’m now 18). I’m just saying that a lot of the immersion that made Daggerfall great is in the game because technology wasn’t advanced enough to make realistic graphics, so the developers needed to use other means (music and sound) to make it feel immersive. And this lack of technology is what brings out some imagination, which makes the game feel better than it actually is. This is also why Skyrim, while a fun game, doesn’t feel as full of life or ‘real’ like Daggerfall.

@@Merudiana-the-local-demoness Yes i see what you mean with the imagination and modern graphics. I want Remake for music especialy, not really for the game itself. With moding it's perfect i agry. Remake the game in the same way of Skyrim it's not a good idea because we loose ambiant and all work of devs for bring the world of Daggerfall to life. A console release it's not a bad idea however, with adaptative control etc...
Independent developers are carrying it to PSVITA by the way. If they get there, it will be exceptional.
A port with mod included like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Next-Gen update or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with a Modding Store.
But again I agree, the game must remain in its juice. With some improvements but not a total change of DA and loading system.
I have 21 so same, i love old games and the vibes they transmit, but i have one thing i hate in old games, it's music, it's for that i want a remake...not of Daggerfall especially but of the Soundtrack because she was very good and And hear it with 16bit sounds I can't find my account.
PS. Sorry for my english i'm french

@@Merudiana-the-local-demoness eh, I kind of disagree. I think procedural generation has come a long way since Daggerfall and with more dynamic house generation and more random 'real' or 'unique' npc quests strewn about in a few places it could be really interesting. Actually I was considering working on a little mod for unity to mess with the house generation but.. We'll see.

Eric Heberling: Medieval Realist, Game of Thrones.
Jeremy Soule: Fun fantasy, Lord of the Rings.

    • @Mehdi.Ouassou
      @Mehdi.Ouassou 5 месяцев назад

I don't think so, but there is one major difference between the two :
Eric Heberling had to compose knowing midi limitations, whereas Jeremy Soule could make a realistic music right away.
When I did this remaster, I choosed to ony use acoustic virtual instruments, It's why it sounds more natural, but in fact, in the original midi files there are a lot of pads and synths I replaced with real instruments, like strings for example.
Jeremy Soule has an orchestral way of doing music that feels magical or fantasy, but it's the same for Eric Heberling.
Your conclusion proves one thing : I did well with this remaster 😊
