    The original 2010 version of 2033 has none of the issues with the UI and it's arguably the better version of the two. It's much more of a passion project and has far less publisher meddling affecting it. You would be trading some of the expanded worldbuilding for it, though, but it's worth it in my opinion.
    Aside from a few misinterpreted plot points and gameplay elements this is a solid, well structured review, nice work.

      I have to admit, I don't have any experience with the original game so I can't really comment. I did see in various places, including in the comments here, that a lot of people really enjoyed the original, so it's clear to me that even without any of the Redux changes it was a good game.
      Thank you so much!
      I'm going to be very honest, you've made me very curious and I ask this genuinely, what misinterpretations did I make? I'm always open to a new outlook on things and I love learning new things about games.

    You simply open your Journal to see how much ammo you have.
    Also there are different audio cues for the throwables you select

    • @GamesfromthePast-Reviews
      @GamesfromthePast-Reviews  11 месяцев назад

      The journal, as in the diary or the notepad? If it's in the notepad, I never open that thing lol. Since I've played Metro a lot of times, I never needed to look at the journal to see my objective or the direction in which I have to go, so I completely forgot about it.
      Yeah, there are distinct audio cues, however quite a couple of times when trying to select something even though I heard the cue I wanted I would get a different item. I assume it was me continuing my mouse movement for half a second and as a result moving on to the next thing, not the games fault in that regard.

    I've played through this game so many times and it always seems like I find a new detail each new playthrough. Thank you for keeping the game fresh in peoples minds through videos like these. Playing the pacifist run in this game feels more right than any other.

      I have the exact same feeling, every time I play this game there's something new, something I missed and it's great.
      It's possible that the pacifist run feels right because that is much closer to how things work in the book. The vast majority of time I try to knockout everyone but I always manage somehow to fail at stealth and the firefight starts, which honestly I don't mind, lol.

      @GamesfromthePast-Reviews  11 месяцев назад

      I honestly would have liked it if at lease some info was presented, I find it kind of silly not to be able to know how much ammo you have. On Ranger Hardcore you can run out of ammo so quickly and it would be nice to know when I find a weapon somewhere if I should exchange a gun I'm holding and I'm out of ammo for with the new weapon. Plus I always fumbled selecting the grenade I wanted which I found both funny and frustrating.

    Here are a few differences from the original game:
    - Most weapons that aren't homemade have a more close design to their real life counterparts (AK's don't look like they have been made in the metro but have been scavenged from the surface.)
    - Almost all main character design and models were much simpler, and a few, like Miller and Ulhman received complete overhauls to look like they do in 2034.
    - Faction uniforms were completely different. The Rangers weren't uniformed and used standard outfits that you encountered most station guards using. The Communists used standard equipment too, the exception being their officers. And the Reich troops used a much more stereotyped uniform that made them look like german troops from WW2 (Most obvious being their german style helmets).
    - The frontline railcar chase was a bit shorter, you never stopped in any of the Reich's stations for a shootout with the guards, you stormed past them while being pursued and shot at from the guards stationed there.
    - The way to the library in the surface was a bit shorter aswell, without the mutant horde you fight in the front. You merely platform a bit and meet with Miller and the other guy in front of the building.
    - The spiders didn't exist in the D6 part, instead it was plate armored nosalises that were either invincible or very hard to kill.
    That's what I remember from way back then, haven't played the original in ages since you can't acces it easily nowdays, but I certainly agree that it is a somewhat different feel to the Redux.

    Ranger Hardcore (with survival if in redux) is the definitive experience for 2033 and Last Light. The resource scarcity helps set tone and immersion in a big way.

    • @gemtownMANCHURIA
      @gemtownMANCHURIA 11 месяцев назад +2

      Im gonna disagree with you there, I played and finished the entire franchise multiple times (yes in ranger hardcore aswell) and the enemy AI is just not advanced enough to justify it. You see the games color palette and the enemy NPC models blend in extremely well (not a bad thing on its own), couple this with the pinpoint accuracy of enemies with automatic rifles and you'll have to kiss firefights goodbye in most fights. Stealth all the way! the alternative is an exercise in futility for new players, and just outright fukken boring for veterans (i was at one point the former aswell).
      From my lengthy experience with this franchise I'd recommend survival hardcore at most, spartan hardcore atleast, anything less and its too piss easy with stealth hoarding and anything more feels like playing a janky stalker total conversion mod where a bandit armed with a 12 gauge can penetrate an exoskeleton.

    For your channel, you genuinely need more views and support, this was great work. Also I remember reading the book (2033) after I played the game and I thought that khan's whole naming thing and lore behind it was a bit goofy. I think overall I like both the book series and games pretty equally, strong in there own differing ways.

    • @GamesfromthePast-Reviews
      @GamesfromthePast-Reviews  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much!
      When I read the first book I thought that given the type of world we're dealing with sure I can believe in the reincarnation aspect and I will even go along with the idea that a reincarnated person knows their past lives and everything else. However I did have one question I couldn't find an answer for, namely what exactly is Genghis Khan doing in Moscow?
      Maybe it was explained more in the other books, but I unfortunately haven't gotten around to reading them.
      I absolutely agree with the fact that the books and the games are good in different ways. One of the reasons why I didn't want to talk a lot about the Metro 2033 book is because the book is focused more on the world and characters as opposed to the game that, as a game should, is focused on video game mechanics, action, shooting, stealth etc.

  • @NatetheNerdy

    I love the metro series, both games and books. It's been a while since I last did a ranger hardcore playthrough, but I thought you could see your ammo if you pull out your notebook, unless that's the second game.
    Also, I know they're called morality points, but I think of them more as life experience points. Throughout the series you can get some points by doing things like having drinks, smoking hookah, or just listening to conversations.

    • @GamesfromthePast-Reviews
      @GamesfromthePast-Reviews  11 месяцев назад +4

      Hmmm, it's possible that the ammo count is on the notebook however since I know the maps and objectives pretty well I almost never pull it up and even when I do it's by accident, lol.
      That's a great way of looking at it, life experience points, and that would explain why you get points from doing things just as the ones you mentioned.

    It's a good review and the game is a nice time killer if you just wanna switch up your games for a week or 2. The books are a joy to read with a lot more crazy stuff in em like cults and psychic humans. What made me fall in love with the game was indeed the atmosphere of Dead City level. I'm always a bit reticent to cover a narrative focused games endings as I kind of feel like I'm peeling back the curtain a bit too much, especially with a game like Metro 2033, where there are some pretty heavy implications.

    • @justaguyyouknow7139
      @justaguyyouknow7139 11 месяцев назад +1

      @GamesfromthePast-Reviews I don't disagree. I guess for me, despite the moral point system, the endings is what makes it all worth it. It provides the deepest moments of introspection that is communicated beautifully through the game, despite the flaws in gameplay.
      It's also crippling to get the bad ending in 2033, not know it's the bad ending, go on to last light, and suddenly the full weight of your lack of awareness hit you at once. Hunter's quote at the beginning, "If it's hostile, kill it" never left my mind, so that's what I did. I never heard Khan tell me to act more than without hesitation or doubt.

    I think of them as humanity points rather than morality. You can get them from some simple things like playing music. So it's some attempt to stay human and not turn into a monster, a literal or figurative one like a lot of the rather evil characters you meet in your journey. A monster can't be reasoned with and would probably murder the Other ones, meaning they would get the bad ending.
    As for the stealth I'm a bit torn. The original was unforgivable but with the Last Light/Redux AI, it's a bit too easy. Sometimes the AI is dowright stupid.

      @@giovannicervantes2053 I love that weapon! A full auto, high fire rate shotgun, it's perfect Too bad it goes through ammo terrifyingly quick, but still one of my favorites.
