I was today years old when I found you can make a Boss CH-1 chorus pedal into a vibrato pedal if you’re going mono by putting a dummy cable into output B..
Not sure if anyone’s ever said (I expect that have!) but I love the work you guys put into the aesthetics for the graphics in the thumbnails/intros... just the use of colour, the layout, it’s just beautiful... so well done to Josh or Nick, don’t think it doesn’t go unnoticed :) have a great weekend!
It's actually a great content marketing tactic. Not only does it make JHS seem generous, but also like they're knowledgable 'pedal nerds'. Who would make better pedals, than those informed by the greats? Plus, you're watching it, which means that while seeing all these other great pedals, you're seeing the JHS logo on the amp, in the intro etc. I'm getting pretty marketing nerd here, but it's building your associations with the brand, positioning them in your mind, and giving you recall (every time you think of a RAT, you might also think -- oh the JHS guy loves those). If you want to learn more, read Byron Sharp's 'How Brands Grow', and hunt down 'The Long and the Short of it' (you can google a .pdf online). They're dense reads, but they explain why you buy shit. And why stuff like this is so fricking important for businesses.
It’s genius, if you ask me. I always get skeptical of sellers who try to push, and they all try to push. JHS actually got me started on pedal obsession and allowed me to expand my pedal possession. And to summarize JHS mentioning his competitors, I’ll reference Issac Newton with his awesome quote, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Scary to me when I heard Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian are doing a pilot for Eyeliner brushes they wished they’d created after you lined up how this goes. Go bro.
Josh, you have quite a few unique creations that you should be extremely proud of. From the panther cub, and the lucky cat, to the unforgettable color box, you’ve done some amazing pedal creating. Cheers to you mate!
I love that DIIV record. Deceiver was when I felt like their music finally broke through to me. I always listened to their records as they came out, but they never stuck with me until this one. What I think makes it so special is the vulnerability, honesty, and commitment to sobriety in it.
I’m in Kalamazoo and I can tell you there’s definitely something in the water. Heritage has already been mentioned and it’s great to still have that factory cranking out classic guitars crafted the same as the Gibsons of the past. There use to be more music in the town since it’s a stopping point between Chicago and Detroit on tour circuits.
Gibson was there. Heritage Guitar's now builds guitars in the old factory. I'm good friends with the Production Manager there. Great place to walkthrough. Lots of history there. They do offer tours.Heritage guitars are killer. Fwiw. Great video guys. Love the channel!
I'm a Heritage nut. I have a really early 535 (their version of the 335), a 150 (LP Standard), and 170 (LP double cutaway). For solidbody fans, the guitar to look for is the 140 with a Florentine cutaway. It's 2/3 the thickness of a Les Paul with all of the output and a beautiful look.
I picked up a 2019 H-150 (Les Paul style) and wow is that thing well-made. Not a huge fan of the seymour duncans that come with it but other than that this guitar is crazy nice.
On one of the greatest days of my life, I was in Kalamazoo, travelling across the country with my sister, the summer of '82. When it dawned on me what else was in Kalamazoo, I looked Gibson up in the phonebook, and called, asking if I could drop in to buy some parts. I was told that they were closed for inventory, but what the heck, come on by and I could get a tour. So I did, and what a day! Even went through the expanded part that was added for the "folk boom of the '60s". Saw harp guitars, got to try the "map" guitar, and was encouraged to "just breathe on" a Kalamazoo Award, which seemed to have breathed life into it. When I asked about possibly scoring a Bigsby spring, I was told that they didn't carry them but that the Bigsby factory was just across the highway. I drove on over, knocked on the door, and who should greet me but Ted McCarty - yeah, THAT guy - who had retired from Gibson and was now president of Bigsby. He gave me a tour, and was pulling stuff off the shelf and unboxing it like he was showing off the model train he got for Christmas. My first ever time seeing a 3-lever palm-pedal...and gold-plated to boot. Just feeling the wooden floorboards under my feet at Parsons St. was an honour. And McCarty's business card is framed in my office. Toldya it was a great day.
I went to Manny's Music in NYC in 1986 with about $500 to buy an amp. Some guy there said that the best thing I could get for that money was a Roland JC120 with a Rat pedal. I checked it out and walked out with both, and three Rolands later (they're built like tanks, so wearing one out takes quite a while), I thank whoever that was. I got major compliments from tons of players since, and many of whom gave me either strange looks when I wheeled it in or outright mad fun of me before they heard it. The Rat was the perfect accompaniment.
Born and raised in Kalamazoo. Half way between the D and Chicago is not a bad place musically. My uncle worked at Gibson. I remember visiting him in the mid 70’s. Had friends that worked at ProCo and wound bass and guitar strings at Dean Markley. Epiphone and Harmony also built in the Zoo. Great music all around town. Club Soda was the shit! Live music every night. Many before they were famous came thru. All types of music as well. Big shows at Wing Stadium.
deceiver is such an excellent album. really hits the perfect mix of pop, ambience and wall of sound. saw them play in Nashville ages ago, and they really filled a mostly empty room with such a lush and clear sound. really impressive and great song writing
Your genuine love for other companies pedals make me trust in the fact your pedals have a lot of love put in the, and that they will for shure make purdy sounds :)
ALL THE UPDOOTS for the Starflyer 59 reference! Love, love, LOVE this DIIV record and this band. Josh, you need to check out their earlier albums as well, Oshin, and Is the Is Are. Gah, sooo good!
For me deceiver demonstrates one of the best guitar tones that i've heard in the past years. Just like you said, they are slowdive without the slow, but I think they came of a "krautrock" background Check out their second album "is this are" beatifull clean delay tones, they used the behringher DR400, love this.
Happy to see you recommending DIIV's 'Deceiver'! A fantastic band that I've been a fan of for several years. I'm might be wrong on this, but I think the two guitarists use a few of your pedals JHS!
The pedal that really surprised me is the Carl Martin Quattro. It's an AC-powered (likely converted to 12 volts DC internally) analog multi-effects pedal with four effects: compressor, overdrive, chorus, and delay with tap tempo. I use it for practically all my guitar recording, even if just for the buffer. The compressor is can get super squishy, but when set low, can be a nice boost. The overdrive has two modes, and the gain range goes from no clipping to lots of clipping and every setting is good. I'm not a big fan of chorus, but this is a good one. I like the it set to a fast speed. The delay sounds analog, but I believe is digital (maybe PT chip?), and includes a tone control. I would be interested to see what a JHS version of that would be, as I really like my Angry Driver and see the quality and passion you put into your designs.
An older friend of mine got to meet Aerosmith by accident in that old Kalamazoo Gibson factory. He says he took a tour and as he was leaving, he wasn’t looking and almost walked right into Steven Tyler! He didn’t recognize them right away and says Steven told him to move, and he didn’t realize who they were until he left. I too am a proud Kalamazoo native!
I had completely forgotten about DIIV, absolutly love their first album. So thank you for reminding me and thank you for putting out awesome pedals and content. I learn something cool every week about a subject I love!
The Dispatch Master is one of the most useful pedals I've ever owned. I love using it before my Spring Tank, the reverbs mix very well together at low settings.
About the record: "Diiv = Slowdive without the 'slow'" was appropriate for the old Diiv (Oshin/Is The Is Are). Deceiver is often very drugged out sounding yet immensely intelligent. It's part Siamese Dream Smashing Pumpkins (they even kinda "quote" the riff from Soma), part MBV, part Pygmalion Slowdive and the rest, well, Diiv.
The Dispatch Master V1 was the first ever pedal I bought back in 2012! Great thing. Still have one but I might be retiring it from a board in favour of a Neunaber Immerse V2. I don't think I could sell it though. Sentimentality + amazing pedal.
I hear Crowded House “don’t dream it’s over” in that vibrato! Avalanche v2 is by far my all time one trick pony. If I could only have one it would be that or the dispatch master.
Deceiver was my top album last year. I'm fairly new to DIIV myself though swimming similar circles for years. 2019 was a fantastic year for music. Kim Gordon's album was stout and Richard Dawson's album is a freaking masterpiece. I think Deceiver beats them by a hair simply for continuity vibe. You mentioned Starflyer!!! 😊
Speaking of which, would be so awesome if you made a video about the Mutron BiPhase history and new versions etc. I think Musitronics effects pedals were/are great sounding, one of my personal favorites being the BiPhase units, new reissues and old originals. Massive respect to you and the crew, love this channel !
On demoing the vibrato - I was waiting for the cue and sing, "there is freedom within. there is freedom without, try to catch a deluge in a paper cup...." hahaha!
I share your appreciation for the RAT. I used it mainly as an overdrive... kept all the knobs fairly low. And nothing sounds like a RAT through a Fender twin Reverb.
Love the "Beavermind" tee shirt....reminds one of the "Dark Side of the Trailer Park" tee shirt from a long forgotten guitar sting company. A request: please bring that shirt back...mine has long ago faded into threads from overuse.
In the late 60's there was a boost pedal that Vox and Heathkit sold. It looked like the wedge part of a Tone Bender in the Vox unit, and the Heathkit version had similar dimensions, but the lower portion was made of Tolex covered plywood with a green metal plate holding the circuit, pots, and switch. It had a great smooth, dynamic sound and pushed an amp slightly. I'd love to have that sound again.
You inspired me to try to finish my own RAT variant pcb/smd based mutant. First try didn't work, lost focus trying to trace the signal and figure out the problem. I must finish it now and create the ultimate clone distortion pedal that will save the world!
The Rat is definitely my favorite pedal you wish you had created. I wish I had made it too. I Love Rats so much I have three of them. A vintage Rat, a Keely modded Rat and a Kinnatone "Mischief" modded Rat. So good!
The emperor v2 , yes i know you already made it, but im blown away by the wave shape selector. its next on my get list for chorus, maybe even 2 for stereo. That was a bit brown nosey, heres a real idea: I wish you basically made the boss line selector but with an additional knob that set a frequency, all frequencies below it went to loop A and and all frequencies above it went to loop B for example
Thank you so much for making me check out Diiv. Showing music to people enriches their lifes. At least sometimes. And thusly makes the world a better place. At least their world. At least sometimes. Which is already a lot!
I’m constantly surprised by the records you chose for Record Time Diiv is pretty tight! If you’re looking for more music similar to them, I’d recommend Launder, Holy Fawn, Far Caspian, Daywave.
Just started watching your videos and wanted to compliment you for covering the cheaper pedals (which is all I buy since I just play in my basement and suck) and your sense of humor. Were parents English? You have a very dry sense of humor that reminds me of the English.
PLEASE, create a distortion pedal similar to the way you created the Bonsai pedal! I played my buddy's original 808, bought your Bonsai, and was blown away by it. You NAILED it! It is the end-all overdrive pedal.
It's funny the way you live the Rat I've felt about the original Boss DS1. The Rat was not in my wheelhouse. But the DS-1 through a Sovtek Mig-50 was so smooth and hot!
To make it worse, Fender called the vibrato tailpiece on their guitars the Synchronized Tremolo but the tremolo channel on their amps the Vibrato channel.
Yea Diiv are super rad. Lol my wife won tickets to thier show in Burlington VT one time. Oshin is my favorite record, and track one (Drunn) is from the first strike of the drum, nothing short of absolutely stunning.
Although I feel the Rat is my favorite distortion pedal, I'm here for the Eventide H9 & EQD Dispatch Master. The H9 to me is what I should've gotten instead of the Pod HD500X. So much smaller and their effects just sound better. I currently have an EQD Dispatch Master on my board and I love it so much. It does everything I mainly want to do with Delay/Reverb in terms of ambience.
FYI - re: Kalamazoo and weird events... Back in 1964 a creature fitting the description of Big Foot was sighted by one of the inland lakes about 40 miles south west of Kalamazoo. That was probably connected to the alien technology pedals from Kalamazoo and all the hairy beasts playing those Gibson guitars for the following decades (Dickey Betts, Zack Wylde, I'm calling you out. 😉)
Kalamazoo was home to the original Gibson factory. It was right next door to the original Checker (taxi cab) manufacturer. We received a new Checker every year until they closed but I wish my Mom would've bought a couple of Les Pauls along the way as well.
Hey, just wanted to say I really appreciate the videos, I've been super stressed out studying for my MCAT which is tomorrow and this vid really just helped me chill the fuck out a bit
Josh - You should have made the EHX Ring Thing. It does killer octaving / choruse / rotophase and wack-a-mole ring mod. Add overdrive and you get the nasty funk horn. You can even get a 12-strng sound out of it and it tune tracks to your guitar when hold the switch down half way. Some mad professor stuff goin on!
Dispatch Master really is amazing It sounds so analogue...I got one my first EQ pedal Rat ahead of it's time and now I want one, where have I been. H9 is amazing and unreal pedal for sure, what can't it do. I need one of those too. Lol Another great one Josh I always learn something and you always make me laugh....laugh with you go course Oh and I would say the.....Boss VB-2 Vibrato
The dispatch master is a wonder. Epecially the newer version, which lets you thicken the reverb with the repeats knob when the time knob is down. Only downside is the delay is a little too soft for some distortion tones, which I believe the Boss DD8 handles much better.
I think there are many simple design pedals that have not been explored yet. Like in the car industry I only see the lack of products that address certain needs. Everything is ultra complex and eternally diverse. Thanks for sharing that ibanez pedal. Actually thats one of the types of design i think we are missing as a standard product for every line. Everybody has their tape echos, or analog delays, but not many have the classic dd3 soumd and put some modulation. Cusack has a small simple super sharp digital delay with long repeats before ever oscilating with two modulation settings in a small format. Great pedal but mine has been sent for repairs 3 times du to various reasons and now I can hear the sound of the pulsating LED light. Mr. Black had a mini but that one wouldn't let the modulation be further changed and lacks clarity. I'll stop the blabber now. Its simply an opinion.
Roland phase II, (that's a two). Also the Morley rotating wah. For record time check out Be-bop Deluxe's Live in the Air Age. Best unknown blues rock album of the '70's. Prepare to have your mind blown.
I'm a Michigander who grew up between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. Pat Martino was a guy who worked at the old Gibson factory, and he did all the work on my guitars growing up. Not sure if he was an alien, but he was definitely a wizard. Over the past couple decades though, our alien overlords have decided they wanted Michigan microbrews to go all with the sick Michigan guitar tone we gave them, so that's the otherworldly gift we're giving the world now.
The Waza VB-2 is one of the coolest pedals on my board. It's expensive but worth it if you like vibrato. It's really well made and has great sound quality.
Josh, love your passion and honesty. Any possibility of reviewing the boss GT-1? I know it's a bit outside of what you usually do, but given your love of Boss, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts
Josh Scott. Invent a vibrato pedal that you can adjust how many cents it goes sharp or flat. Thats would be cool. And to push it even farther, maybe, just Maybe....now this is out there. Make it stereo, and on the left output it goes flat and back to pitch, and right output goes from pitch to sharp. And maybe give it a cool name, and a cool color. Definitely cool knobs.
The Ibanez DMD is like three pedals in one: Chorus, Flange or delay so basically it's 9 pedals you wish you invented :) My favorite setting BTW is a delay at about 350ms with a touch of modulation. Add an SS10 and you're in total shoegaze territory.
I love this channel...that being said I haven’t bought a JHS pedal because you keep making recommendations of other pedals. Can you do a video on Tremolo pedals?
Have you ever done an episode featuring the Ibanez PUE5 Tube? I bought one in 1991 and it’s been my favorite version of the Tube Screamer as well as the Tube King distortions.
Drop the façade. We all know THE pedal you wish you came up with first is Korg Miku.
Plot twist. That's the only pedal he created that wasn't based on anything else, in collaboration with Korg.
@@cavanray5327 Plot twist: Korg stole the idea from him
They still make that?
The real best girl(pedal)

You know in the future somebody is gonna dig Josh up... to settle a bet. Like they did to Ronnie Van Zant and the Neil Young t-shirt.

What’s the best way to use the Dispatch Pedal. Do you prefer using it in the loop or directly through the guitar straight into the input jack?
If you have a switchable loop with trails that would be ideal.

The emperor v2 , yes i know you already made it, but im blown away by the wave shape selector. its next on my get list for chorus, maybe even 2 for stereo.
That was a bit brown nosey, heres a real idea:
I wish you basically made the boss line selector but with an additional knob that set a frequency, all frequencies below it went to loop A and and all frequencies above it went to loop B for example
Thank you so much for making me check out Diiv. Showing music to people enriches their lifes. At least sometimes. And thusly makes the world a better place. At least their world. At least sometimes. Which is already a lot!
Great video Josh…..also sick shirt!
The Rat is my favorite pedal you wish you made. I wish I still had my original early 80’s large box Rat. It was HUGE and sounded amazing.
I’m constantly surprised by the records you chose for Record Time
Diiv is pretty tight!
Not from Kalamazoo, but it sure seems like the people running Gibsons marketing department are aliens incapable of human emotions...
Two words to prove the point: robot tuners.
Unfortunately they aren't good at cloning either.
Thank you Josh. I needed to know that you know Starflyer 59. One of my favs ever. Wow- Diiv sounds great.
I'm gonna check that record - but dude, Nada Surf: So much love for those dudes. Killer.
Thank you for recommending DIIV! Never heard of them. That is exactly my type of music. Sounds so good with headphones
It's funny the way you live the Rat I've felt about the original Boss DS1. The Rat was not in my wheelhouse. But the DS-1 through a Sovtek Mig-50 was so smooth and hot!
How did the whammy bar become known as tremolo, when the tremolo effect modulates volume instead of pitch?
Leo Fender fucked it up. I just call it whammy bar to skip the whole thing.
catchy
To make it worse, Fender called the vibrato tailpiece on their guitars the Synchronized Tremolo but the tremolo channel on their amps the Vibrato channel.
TGP subcriber, right?
What's TGP?
Edit: miss read the P as B
never played the VB-2 but I was amazed on how much I loved the Vibrato setting on my Deja Vibe, definitely vibe effect is worth exploring.
Yea Diiv are super rad. Lol my wife won tickets to thier show in Burlington VT one time. Oshin is my favorite record, and track one (Drunn) is from the first strike of the drum, nothing short of absolutely stunning.
dispatch master is my favorite pedal of all time! it has been on my board since day 1 and never left.
You had my attention at Starflyer. Been listening to Deceiver all day, such great textures.
The dispatch master was the first pedal I ever bought. Really sent me on a journey I haven’t finished yet and I couldn’t be happier
Pedals are addicting as hell. So many great sounds and cool colors.
Damn, thats probably the most awesome t-shirt i have ever seen.
Loved this DIIV record! Their older stuff is different but equally awesome: very 80s sounding jangly dream pop, with amazing clean guitar tones.
Josh, I wish that you, when talking about bucket brigade circuits, you'd always mention the chipset. It helps...
Fantastic "Record Time" Thanks for all the sweet suggestions!
Dispatch Master really is amazing It sounds so analogue...I got one my first EQ pedal
Rat ahead of it's time and now I want one, where have I been. H9 is amazing and unreal pedal for sure, what can't it do. I need one of those too. Lol
Another great one Josh I always learn something and you always make me laugh....laugh with you go course
Oh and I would say the.....Boss VB-2 Vibrato
Saw DIIV live right before the whole corona thing. One of the best experiences ever!
Diiv is like slow dive without the slow ....speaking of things I wish I thought or did. Genius and true
Its simply an opinion.
i’m gonna have to go back and check your vb-2 settings because that was such a beautiful warble!
For me the Chandler Tube driver with a vintage GE 12ax7 in it. Sweet far just great overdrive. And the Boss SY-1 or as i call it Vangellis in a box.
Roland phase II, (that's a two). Also the Morley rotating wah.
For record time check out Be-bop Deluxe's Live in the Air Age. Best unknown blues rock album of the '70's. Prepare to have your mind blown.
I'll take any Be Bop Deluxe album (I have them all). I really don't consider them bluesy in any way though.
Well Josh, I’m glad you are the guy that created the “Bonsai” pedal. I love that pedal. It’s 9 ways PHAT!
The Waza VB-2 is one of the coolest pedals on my board. It's expensive but worth it if you like vibrato. It's really well made and has great sound quality.
I love mine. Got it a few years ago at the local music shop when I was looking for a RAT, funnily enough
@linksauce_1 Ha, I was looking for a tremolo and just bought the wrong thing. Once I got home and tried it, though, was an instant keeper!
Josh, love your passion and honesty. Any possibility of reviewing the boss GT-1? I know it's a bit outside of what you usually do, but given your love of Boss, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts
Please do a full episode on your RATS! It's my favourite pedal too :)
Diiv - first record time, that I didn't previously know, that I like immediately. Thanks.
Loved the Why you need a boost show !! Made me go try my Creme Brûlée’s and fall in love all over again.
I simply love your sense of humor, if you ever visit NL I'll buy you a few beers!
The Ibanez DMD is like three pedals in one: Chorus, Flange or delay so basically it's 9 pedals you wish you invented :)
My favorite setting BTW is a delay at about 350ms with a touch of modulation.
Add an SS10 and you're in total shoegaze territory.
I love this channel...that being said I haven’t bought a JHS pedal because you keep making recommendations of other pedals.
Can you do a video on Tremolo pedals?
The Dispatch Master got a genuine reaction out of me, and I was listening through a phone speaker! That's definitely a pedal I'm adding to my list!
So cool to hear you mention Starflyer.
Very good! You could talk about controllers, like the EHX Super Switcher. There are not many videos on this subject. Thanks!
Awesome pedals! That Les Paul sounds fantastic too.
My favourite effect after DST and OD is the chorus. does not Matter which pedal it is, I only love this effect!
Kalamazoo native here. Thanks for the shoutout!
Rat WF is my fave pedal. Bought a WF RI off ebay for $80 when I knew nothing about pedals and will never let this thing go.
Working from home during quarantine, I have been able to watch these during "work" so... no, I would not mind a 3 1/2 - 5 1/2 hour long video
The RAT is my go-to for all dirt! Cool to know that it’s from my state
Have you ever done an episode featuring the Ibanez PUE5 Tube? I bought one in 1991 and it’s been my favorite version of the Tube Screamer as well as the Tube King distortions.
