- Voodoo Lab pedals are amazing. They just are. But you don't have to take my word for it... wait yes you do. But you can also hear them today. I'm giving some history as to why and how they were game changers in the mid-90s and how they're still killing it today. In the comments tell me if you've ever heard Helen Stellar and about a band you heard of from a movie soundtrack!

JHS' wife: "More used pedals? Are you serious? This is wasting our money!"
JHS: "Don't worry, I'll make another RUclips video and drive the prices up 200%. It's an investment!"
Haa damn, he does change the value a little bit.
@Jean Quast Nobody cares and you're a bot or some advertiser
@@SpooningTreesap86 its so strange because there’s always that second account that says “ok ill try it out, looks good so far”. Most of those dumb adds only have the one comment.
@@Otis-Isom I've seen it becoming more common, many times when you go to a post on Instagram you'll see one advertiser post and then 2-3 "wow that's great thanks" messages follow it up immediately. Also noticed they both commented on the same day so probably bots. Hell even if they aren't bots it's unsolicited advertisement which is annoying.
@@SpooningTreesap86 yeah, it’s kind of interesting watching the shift in the way bots advertise but it would be much better if their wasn’t any bot ads at all
To Everyone: I think Josh has successfully organized the single best guitar gear channel on RUclips.
Yes
Yep thanks to Josh inflating pedal prices I traded my df-7 for a glass bottom yacht
Without a doubt.
I never used pedals before the pandemic, but I caught the “weird pedals” show & started buying pedals. Overdrives and distortions mainly, because I became a minimalist player by virtue of being broke as a young-player. 😂
I watch this show constantly now.
Agreed!
No. He does nothing but contribute to the completely falsely inflated second hand gear market and has done a great job of helping things become inaccessible for no reason. Bravo.
3:55 - Ron Howard narrating: "But Josh wasn't OK with that."
Jeremy Tallacksen basically what I was thinking, but your version is better
Hah....good one!
I was thinking the narrator from Jane the Virgin
Nice! But I think Arrested Development style would be more "He wasn't. But Josh comforted himself in the knowledge that he DID own every Boss pedal with the original font and silver battery access screw."
I know everyone always says this but I love you spotlight other pedal makers. That says a lot about you and your company. So much so, that it makes me want to buy a JHS pedal, whether I need it or not. If I do, I'll review/demo it on my channel for sure. Great vids - always look forward to them!
GearGasms Agreed. I love that JHS spreads the love and it makes me appreciate their products even more. I just grabbed a Pulp N Peel V4. Sounds phenomenal.
You guys are pushing me and my credit card further and further into the JHS camp!!!
@@GearGasms You can't go wrong with JHS. I have five of their pedals and will buy more after my bank account recovers from my last few gear acquisitions.
KC
The Unicorn or Penguin?
JHS Cheese Ball...Highly recommend!
I’m just sitting here watching this 30 minutes before I set up for my first ever gig. 😂
Thanks man!! I’m a little nervous, but I think we should do just fine.
Break a leg
Sweet dude! Let us know how it goes
Enjoy...! Have a good one
Good luck
Man, that micro vibe & sparkle drive together put the biggest smile on my face... Thank you!!
The Sparkle Drive has been my main overdrive pedal for over ten years now. The clean blend is incredibly underrated. No clue how I could live without it.
I'm still laughing about the Proctavia yoghurt. :-D
was taking a drink of coffee when that popped up
Yukkkkkkk! !!!!!!! !!! !
That is hilarious, but this pedal rocks. I have the original, no led. Love it. Also have the Tremelo and the Microvibe.
Randy California was the guitarist in Spirit; he was tweaking his own gear as a teen in the 60’s when Hendrix asked him to join his band in NYC, he was too young though. I was fortunate to catch Spirit in the San Diego Stadium parking lot for 1 dollar in the 80’s. Randy played a Purple FrankenStrat and when he lit into his solos the air became rarified. His equally brilliant stepfather Ed Cassidy was also something to behold on drums, one of a kind. Fans of fuzz and Rock in general should deep dive into the first four Spirit albums, but start backwards. 😉music.ruclips.net/video/l-2A7FgHx4s/видео.html&feature=share
"a guy named Randy California"... quite an understatement
I was just going to say that! Played with Hendrix, founder of Spirit and Taurus, pretty much WROTE Stairway to Heaven...
@@horrorview More like wrote 2 bars of Stairway to Heaven. Nice try
those 2 bars are worth at least $1M
@@asparagusbear3323 :)
Thought the same. Spirit is such a great band no one really talks about
I discovered Ry Cooder when I was 16 watching the movie “Paris, Texas”. Still listening 36 years later....
I became Cooder-aware while watching back-to-back Walter Hill movies: Southern Comfort and The Long Riders (IMO #1 GOAT Western)
Please do rotary pedals next!
Second that!
Can't do a rotary pedal episode without the Boss RT-20 Rotary Ensemble, one of the few RARE non USA made pedals worth getting.
Personally I would like to see him do a Ring Modulation episode. Wonder if JHS has or plans to release a ring mod pedal
Neo Ventilator II...
No please I dont want people to find out about my super secret Pigtronix Rototron .
I know it’s not a real band, but I’m pretty sure That Thing You Do is one of the greatest songs ever written. And one of the best movies ever made for that matter.
Josh, you're literally blowing up the spot (and the prices) on some of the best kept secrets in gear 😂😂
Sparkle Drive Mod? Giggity? Legendary.
Great video! I think the analog chorus is one of the most musical pedals out there. I love the micro vibe and sparkle drive. Kudos to you for sharing these videos with other pedal manufacturers. Love it!
I love that you plug other pedals and other pedal companies and give a history lesson in the process.
I love Voodoo Lab's pedals. MY Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive is always on. It takes an already excellent guitar tone and sweetens it to perfection. It makes my tone come alive. I wouldn't want to play without it.
Sparkle Drive is one of my favorite ODs. Used it for years. I use a Plumes now because the 3rd setting kinda gives me that clean blend with a little more of a ratty sound which I like.
i love the 4 knob tremolo cuz you can also use it as a boost if you turn the intensity all the way down and it sounds awesome
Josh: I don't have the original version without the LED, but I'm ok with that.

Still waiting on that bass specific episode
Josh is waiting for the okay from Davie. Sorry for the delay. No pun intended.
Yeah Josh please do a bass one
Oh, what a treat - a complaining bassnozzle.

Movie that led to musical discoveries : O Brother Where Art Thou, as a Brit it introduced me to artists and genres I had no clue about. Great stuff. :)
Watching The Big Lebowski and hearing Just Dropped in to See What Condition my Condition Was in made me realize Kenny Rogers was an acid head back in the day.
I wouldn't call him a "head", he only did it that once and saw so much that he broke his mind. Effed him up real nice... now he thinks he's an island in a stream... whatever that is
Discovered The Shins as well as Iron&Wine from the movie Garden State ... Brilliant movie and Soundtrack
This is exactly what I was going to post
Same for me. I also discovered Nick Drake and indirectly The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie through this soundtrack.
one of my fav soundtracks!
I had a Bosstone, it worked great with my SG.
"but I'm okay with that . . . " *locks eyes with audience for three seconds* (No, he's not okay with that.)
John is the man. I worked at Voodoo Lab as a play tester for a while (worked at Boogie for a while too both were in Petaluma CA for a while). I had an Analog Chorus that was technically broken as it squealed at extreme settings but the middle ground settings were so lush and 3D.
Band discovered on a movie soundtrack:
The Beta Band - High Fidelity
"I will now sell five copies of The Three E.P.s by The Beta Band." - Rob Gordon
Bob Conklin heard them a bunch of years ago on XMU, immediately bought all their stuff.
@@toddwhite1036 Dry the Rain is inextricably tied to High Fidelity for me. My friends and I walked straight from the theater to the record store to to find the Three E.P.s. They turned out to be a great band!
Gotta tell you the sparkle drive is great for a boost, clean or otherwise !!!
I just bought a Sparkle Drive. I way going to by a Joyo Vintage OD. But, found a used Sparkle Drive. I have had it for 2 weeks and am loving the clean blend. It adds a dimension that other pedals don’t have.
Band discovered from a soundtrack: GodSpeed You Black Emporer on the 28 Days Later Soundtrack.
Saw them in a warehouse in my small-city hometown on maybe their first tour!
I had 4 VL pedals. I still have a modded MicroVibe and Tremolo. I had an old BossTone and a Sparkle Drive. Great pedals.
I discovered “explosions in the sky” through the movie “Sunday night lights” and the track “first breath after coma” is probably the best instrumental track ever written!
*Friday
I have the Micro Vibe and I love it. It took a little bit of time to figure out where to put it in my signal chain for it to sound the best. Put a good fuzz in front of it and you can get all Jimi.
One of my favorite soundtracks in the mid 90’s was Empire Records. And there was a song on it called Nice Overalls by a band called Lustre. Loved that band. They only put out on LP in A&M Records and I still listen to their album regularly after 23 years.
My father had the Voodoo lab bosstone and he lends it to me quite frequently so I’m pretty happy about that
Tito and Tarantula. They were the house band in “From Dusk Till Dawn”. Just amazing!
Rob Hensel awesome movie. My favourite track is Dark Night by The Blasters
Let me just give a shout out to my 2 best friends on the internet... you guys have magnificent taste in music and movies... well done!!! The intro to that movie, when the guitar part to Dark Night kicks off then the band kicks in... oh shit... theatrical masterpiece.
It is really nice to go back to some of the pedals we all tried and wished we still had our hands on. Had an overdrive when I first started playing that got stolen but later was able to get one at a flea market. Voodoo Labs makes killer pedals and they are very underrated.
Love that chorus pedal. Wow.
Hey Josh, have you considered doing a video on ring modulation?
Fight Club introduced me to the Pixies with Where is My Mind playing at the end of the movie.
Same here
Yep
I heard Surfer Rosa from a classmate in 8th grade ('88). She was usually listening to The Cure. So I listened in on her Walkman, and was pretty blown away. I brought her a blank cassette tape for her to copy it over for me. A week later, and I wore that tape out. It met it's ultimate demise in my Dad's tape player in his car. It got crinkled up.
Finally someone giving some love to Voodoo Lab pedals! Been a fan for years (and not just because I live in the same county they're made, didn't even know that for a while ;) I own many of phase 2 including the tremelo, sparkle drive, chorus, micro vibe, and they're power supplies. Would like the giggity too...🎸
Randy California! The guitarist from Spirit? "12 dreams of Doctor Sardonicus" baby!
Hi Jeff!
@@cstocker77 ruclips.net/video/dTHzWJmfRDg/видео.html
I have one of the pre-LED Proctavia pedals. It's a very good pedal and surprisingly versatile for an octave fuzz.
"singles" movie soundtrack introduced me to Smashing Pumpkins, Mudhoney, SCREAMING TREES. MY GOD THAT SOUNDTRACK is more good!
Love that sparkle drive!!! Great episode.
Actually, I was watching the end credits to the Power Puff Girls movie and saw that the end theme was done by a band called bis. I have since acquired every one of their albums. They somehow managed to fuse punk and disco into a palatable form of music and they're definitely worth a listen.
Dave Wiese Bis were SO HYPED in the UK in the mid-nineties for about ten minutes and then became massively uncool really quickly. I saw them open for Sebadoh and they were utterly dreadful
@@Steaminlidz Here in the states, I hadn't heard of them aside from one album on Lookout Records catalog not long before Lookout fell apart.
This is great! I just learned that one of my favorite pedals on my board is kinda rare I guess. I have the Voodoo Labs Tremolo without the LED, has two knobs, and the internal jumper. It's in perfect condition and sounds amazing. I bought it new when it first came out and it was the second pedal I ever purchased. Thanks for the info Josh!!
You should listen to king gizzard and the lizard wizard!!!
Just saw them live in Paris! Amazing band with a crazy sound
i have recomended this band to JHS three times now ... still waiting - again - start at the begining and take the ride - simply put - the best new band ever . not a bad song in the entire catalog. absolutely incredible .
just saw them in London last week was one of the best concerts ive been to
Yes!!!!!
I have an original Micro-Vibe, it’s never coming off my board... unless that little lightbulb for the photocells in the circuit needs replacing... then it’s going right back on again.
Soundtrack band... not quite from a movie, but I really got into Death Cab for Cutie because they kept playing their songs on The O.C., then I saw them at this free street concert in Coney Island and starting buying their albums... the next gig I saw them was at Radio City Music Hall... I’d say that’s quite a leap from a street by the boardwalk to one of the best sounding spaces in town!
Sparkle Drive is my favorite OD ever.
The Analog Chorus seems to adopt a briefer delay range that overlaps a bit with what some flangers do. That's usually optimal for nailing an ersatz Leslie sound. Nice!
I have been using the Giggity since it came out, one of my favorite tone shaping pedals.
Voodoo Lab Control Switcher saved the day on my rig. It turned channel switching on my amp into a midi signal since my amp didn't play nice with the built-in momentary/latching switching of my ES-8.
Not a movie, but I discovered a J-Rock band called The Pillows from the Fooly Cooly anime that used to be on Adult Swim back in the day. Songs are from various albums from late 90's to early 2000's. everyone a masterpiece!
Tulk such a great, great band.
@@rt.hinkel High gain yet melodic. Masters of chord progression. I know I've let those OST loop over and over for 15+ years. Makes be want to get a Fender Jag
The Pillows are the reason I play bass. Heard Sleepyhead whilst two robots were fighting and said "I wanna play that".
Jeez i haven't heard that animated series mentioned in forever. Loved it.
Pedal power 2 still going strong after 20 yrs ...knock on metal.VL has great customer service too . Kudos to JHS for supporting other company's.
Agnes Obel from Netflix’s “Dark” (who’s keyboardist, violinist and cellist all apparently use pedals 😁).
I love that show, and the soundtrack is beautiful.
I've had an acoustic for years, never really practiced much. Just picked it up once in a while. I just got an electric guitar, now I have a whole new set of interests with guitar, so I watch a lot of videos in general, but I watch your videos just to pick up on your love for electric guitar and pedals/modding-sounds. Thanks pal. Keep it up.
Soundtracks gave me Ennio Morricone, Peter Gabriel’s Passion and Passion sources records, Brian Eno’s space stuff (Saturn maybe), and of course lots of Brit stuff from Guy Ritchie
Brian Eno/Apollo. Top soundtrack choices.
‘I don’t think I have a problem’. Dude, the best salesman on the planet. That new intro is awesome btw. I was really impressed by the song ‘Hollow Talk’, by the Choir Of Young Believers, from swedish serie The Killing.
3:50 That look was priceless! You’re so not okay with that hahah
They are great pedals. The store I worked for started carrying them 15 years ago and have had the Giggity and Sparkle Drive Mod on my home board ever sense. My Pedal Power 2 has been on 24 hours a day for 15 years and never a single problem.
The Muffs with their rendition of “Kids in America” on the 90s classic “Clueless”.
Agreed!
Been waiting for this video, I’ve always had a soft spot for Voodoo Lab pedals. I absolutely love my tremolo and micro vibe pedals. I can’t imagine my setup without them.
I love this show. It feels like the Good Eats of guitar pedals
I just stumbled on to this channel in the last few days & I've been consuming every video I can. They've really sparked a dormant love of guitar & effect pedals (even vinyl) back into me. Thanks, Josh!
Watched this movie called "The Graduate" and heard some really cool songs from a band called Simon and Garfunkel. You should definitely give them a listen.
I've heard of them as well. They seem to have a lot of potential and I'm pretty sure they'll make it big if they just keep at it.
Old video, I know. But I discovered Pete Droge and the Sinners when he did the title song on the Beautiful Girls movie soundtrack album in about '96. I went to the store to get it and ended up with Find A Door instead, not knowing the song was from a movie. Been a fan ever since.
I discovered Big Star by watching "Nothing Can Hurt Me." Crazy they weren't bigger than they were.
bevo65 they are so amazing
The first voodoo labs purchase I made had me hooked. I bought and still have one of the 4 amp selectors from them, built very well and I then installed 2 pedal power 2’s in my board that I’m still working on lol.
Maybe I'll just make a board out of univibes, with about 8 or 10 of them, is that allright?
Actually, using a couple of them could create some interesting sounds if you set them to different speeds.
I believe that would be awesome.
Also cool: Run a dirty rotary through a square-wave or pulse tremolo. At different speeds.
Fulltone dejavibe is all I need! That thing is sick
@@liamtahaney713 I'm using a NUX Roctary. Fast and slow settings with a ramp, overdrive and octave up and down controls. Picked it up for $100 Canadian used.
I'm so happy you did an episode on VL. The tremolo and sparkle drive have been on my board forever. Phenomenal stuff. That trem is just the closest thing to my old Fender amps and a life saver when backline provides a Hot Rod Deluxe or something.
I love this channel so much. Thank you, Josh for the ongoing education and for satisfying the guitar nerdiness.
I discovered the La's via "So I Married an Axe Murderer". That record is killer.
I discovered Sondre Lerche through the Dan in Real Life soundtrack and now he's one of my favorites.
I found several bands years ago through snowboard movie soundtracks. A lot of the older snowboard films (like late 90s/early 2000s) used unknown and up and coming bands to fill out the soundtracks behind the riders' film parts.
I first heard My Bloody Valentine in "Lost in Translation" and have loved them ever since. Still think their name is bad, though. Oh well!
it's really disappointing how stupid their name is but ya know if someone can't get past the name, shoegaze just isn't for them.

Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise. When he jumps at the end and he's falling with Sigur Ros playing in the background. Musically changed my life.
Incredible soundtracks that changed my life: The Big Chill and The Crow.
Justin Driscoll the crow soundtrack is so good.
The singles soundtrack owns everyone
@@33cattt49 As an old man I'd already heard all those bands when it came out.
Justin Driscoll yeah but State of Love and Trust and The Lovemongers cover of Battle of Evermore weren’t easily available at the time, and it’s probably the most exposure Mudhoney ever got.
OMG! That Proctavia ad was just perfect! I couldn't help to comment.
Greetings from Spain!
now my lost ebay auction on that ocatvia at 50 bucks hurts even more.
I can't speak to Voodoo Lab pedals, but their Pedal Power 2 Plus made a world of difference in noise levels over the daisy chain setup I used before. :-)
I'm starting to think JHS was just started so he could buy pedals as a business expense. Dec. showing a profit for the year. Buy a couple new computers and a shit load of pedals.
I discovered the Gipsy Kings cover of "Hotel California" while watching "The Big Lebowski" and it just blew my mind. Incredible rendition which totally changes the vibe.
Will there by any attention given to Ring Modulation by JHS? Would be interesting to see your take on it. I feel it is one of the most misunderstood effects out there as there are few players who know how to use it effectively.
JHS must take up the torch and clone Moogerfoogers.
Tell me! Who uses it effectively? I’ll check it out!
Synthesists use it effectively. Ha. It’s real hard to use live unless you have four hands. He Fairfield circuitry “Randy’s revenge” is crazy usable though. The low pass filter makes it way more musical imho. The moog one is just straight up gnarly and you need to tune it very carefully. Sounds good though.
@@rasm0225 Jeff Beck and Bill Frisell are *very* creative with Ring Modulation. John Medeski gets some very interesting tones with it on keyboards. Radiohead used Ring Modulation to great effect as well.
Seeing the movie Flash Gordon at the cinema introduced me to Queen when I was 6 or 7 years old. It also introduced me to Brian May and became the reason I play guitar.
There are two types of people in the world. People who really enjoy different choruses, and people with invalid opinions.
You made it clear in the video, but the overdrive really shines with a bit less of gain and a cooking amp.
Band: Switchfoot, Movie: A walk to remember.

I can tell you're from Alabama by the way you say "still" instead of "steel". I never realized this was a thing until I moved out of the south people commented on my accent.
They're not pronounced the same?
Alabamian here and it's "water" for me. Everyone says water slightly different but people from the south sound like they're throwing a "u" in it. Some folks around here actually say wuter... Yessssss! I discovered Voodoo Lab in 2012 and they became one of my favorite pedal makes.
Around a decade ago, I went on a major overdrive pedal binge. I bought every latest and greatest thing going. I also bought a sparkle drive. I still own and use that pedal. All the others came and went.

I love your take on your industry, you love pedals and music so much it supersedes the standard idea of how business is... you will outright tell your viewers to buy and try pedals from 'competitors' brands to ensure they find the sound they want.. I wish more people and industries were like you, the world would be a better place... no selling anyone things they don't want, you are a great dude. It inspires me to continue my mods and pedals/anti-pedals/amps. Keep up the good work good sir!
I have the Tremolo and Micro Vibe on my board. Great pedals. I also power my pedals with the Pedal Power 2+. Also, I've experienced great customer service from them.
The Voodoo Lab Tremolo was the first pedal I ever bought. Before overdrive, before delay. 20 years on, it's the only pedal I own that has never left my board.
I love your channel man. Promoting other pedals shows that you have a love for this type of art. So humble, so intelligent. LOVE JHS. 💞
