Did you see that Maiden will be in New Zealand next year?
i recommend checking isolated drums from iron maiden song caught somewhere in time I'm not asking you to make video about it although i would love to see your reaction you can find it on yt and its on single bass
Enjoy Nico as long as you can. He had a stroke in January but has fought through it. At the beginning of this current tour, he was actually ridiculed for being off. Then it came out about the stroke and the negativity quickly became positive because even though he was slightly paralyzed, he persevered. He's better now, but Father Time is a prick and will eventually take him from us. Up the Irons and Up Nico!
If the day ever comes that we lose Nicko and the boys still want to go on, I say El Estepario would be the perfect fit!!
@@randywissler9923no
@@randywissler9923I think it would be Joe Lazarus that stepped in if they carried on.
I can see my face 1:23 in to the video, bald dude just behind the guys with the green hats! 😂
72 years old...and still kicking asses...Nico is great..!!! ❤😊
you right bro 72 years and he play amazing 🙂
Please check anything from their legendary Rock in Rio concert in 2001. It was the last show of the tour of the Brave New World album released in 2000, the first one after Bruce and Adrian return to the band in 99 (Bruce Left in 93 and adrian left in 89). So it's also the first record of Maiden with 03 guitarrists. This tour was legendary and the DVD they recorded in Rock in Rio was an absolutely beast. I was at this gig and i can affirm i was sensational. You should definetly check it out.
Agreed. Dream of Mirrors is such an underrated song and need more airtime.
i suggested on another maiden video that he could try the clansman Dram of Mirrors and The sign off the cross off the 2001 rock in rio show. hope he does them all.
@@remcovandenheuvel1315 He already did the Clansman. Sign of the Cross would be a good pick
@@trolleymctrollface6544 i forgot. think i requested sign off the cross and dream off mirrors. and mabye another song off that live show
1982 Hammersmith better. 2001 bruce voice not at its best
Maiden are a masterclass in how to write and perform masterpieces.
There are many reasons why they have managed to stay on top of their game for almost 50 years.
I remember this night very well. It was a very hot evening in June in Gothenburg. Amazing experience to be there with 50000+ other fans. I brought my 14-year old step daughter and cemented a life-long love for metal with her 😀 They also sent it live on Swedish television and radio, reachable from Norway, Denmark and Finland too so potentially about 25 million people could enjoy it. Amazing one-off.
I was there; among the "sheep" queuing since 7-8 AM and it was a struggle I tell you. The sun was on and never left off, for the whole day we queued, but once we got in it was among the best experiences of my life, but it was hard earned!
I was there, it was just as good as all the Maiden concerts I’ve been to.
🤘
Maidens music never gets old....superband....100% professionalism.
Possibly my favourite Maiden song. This is a superb performance of it.
good performance....but i prefere the version with paul in "live at the raimbow* in 1981
when adrian just enjoyed the band replacing dennis stratton
Definitely my favourite.
Good to see the Paul Di'Anno, and Clive Bur classics still being played live
👌
Andrew I would be interested in your review of Clive's drumming on Hallowed be thy name live in 1982
This band is amazing! Selling out a stadium after decades! And the lead vocalist is amazing!
Total pros
My first ever maiden gig.. In my hometown. Been to 17 gigs since then.
Fun fact. The intro to this song was used in a Lucozade advert in the 1980. Featured Daley Thompson on the starting blocks and when the song kicks in that was the gun going off to start the race.
Oh wow!
Get your tickets to iron maiden booked their coming to see you in Auckland 16th of September at the spark arena
The backdrops are works of art in their own right. They use many over the course of the show, for the big songs. They've been doing that for at least 20 years, maybe longer.
All of these live Iron Maiden performances are goosebump inspiring. They are so damn good.
I love that this channel has gone from beeing you reacting to drummers to you discovering Iron Maiden..🤘🤘
Fine reaction. I shall admit how wrong I was, because I've been an Iron Maiden fan for a long time, since I was a kid, and, by that time, just when I got to know Maiden's sound, the drummer, Clive Burr, was leaving the band (me and my fellows, Maiden's fans, we used to think that there could not exist a drummer better than Clive), and so someone with a strange name came up - Nicko McBrain, and I remember that we asked: "Who is this guy? Is it possible that he's got what it takes to be the drummer in our favorite band?" We could not be wronger than this! I regret asking these questions! Nicko is the best drummer live! Since Neil Peart's death, he has been the greatest one!
It would be worth going back and checking out some of the recordings with Clive Burr on drums. He was a fantastic drummer, too, with a slightly different feel from Nicko. Also, with Paul Di’Anno on vocals, who was terrific on the first two albums, if not so impressively operatic as Bruce Dickinson.
Somehow I find Di'Anno more impressive, for me he could produce much more of a goosebump feeling, especially with this song.
Just watched the 1980 Rainbow performance, so much better!
Clive could swing, ghost notes galore. Gives these tunes a totally different feel.
Clives isolated drums tracks here on YT are phenomenal.
Disclaimer: No shade on Nicko, he's a boss.
I love metal, but I've never much liked operatic singing (or atonal screaming either). I kinda prefer Di'Anno@@DerEchteBold
@@DerEchteBold- I like Paul's vocals on the music he recorded with Maiden and those live recordings with Dennis and Clive are fantastic. I saw Maiden live in 85 on the Powerslave tour when I was 15 and it was a life changing experience.
It's funny hearing Andrew talk about how important being "on" every night is then seeing people talk about how good Paul and Clive were.
I was there, it's my all time favorite concert with maiden and also maybe ever. They only played songs from the first 7 albums.
This was also famously (for swedish rockers) aired live on TV at the same time. We traveled to Gothenburg by car and SO many others did that the highways were all packed with cars with maiden banners, flags, stickers etc. The whole thing was almost like spiritual journey xD
PS: I'm a bassist, the bassline he plays at 6:28 and onwards was like a milestone in my bass development, one of the coolest and fun riffs you can play!
Always gives me goosebumps the instrumental section of Phantom, fave maiden song, and they released it straight out of the blocks on their first album in 1980. Amazing.
Hey Andrew. It’s your lucky day. Iron Maiden have just announced the first date for 2024. It’s at Spark Arena,
Auckland on September 16th.
Looking forward to you giving us a gig review afterwards.
I first saw Iron Maiden live in 1982 at the beginning of the Number Of The Beast tour a week or two before the album hit the stores. It was an epic gig and so memorable for the performance of "Hallowed Be Thy Name" that was the first time that I had heard it. The band were so tight even with the new boy Bruce on vocals, I saw them again later that year now having listened to the album many times and they sounded just as tight as the record. That was when they had Clive Burr on drums who in my humble opinion managed to do so much with a small kit. I saw them many times during the 80's and early 90's and every time they were so tight playing some tracks faster or slower but always perfectly in sync. I lost touch for a while with girls, jobs, houses etc taking my time and money. Over the last few years it's been great to catch up on that lost time and the band are till at the top of there game. Senjutsu the current album seems just as fresh as the 1st self titled album. I hope I get to see them live again at some point. Nico is an incredible percussionist, so accurate and metronomic but somehow adds feeling to the way he plays just like the other members of the band. Many thanks for sharing.
More Maiden please!!
Agreed!
Phantom of the opera is from the first Iron Maiden album and its still killing! Love Nickos drumming on every record ! ❤ check out the Trooper, some crazy drumming there as well 🔥 or Where eagles dare - apparently even Nicko had first issues playing that song originally
Nicko is 71 years old now, and they're just finishing a pretty big and demanding tour right now. Nicko has always suffered from cancer and got well quite recently, before the tour. I've seen most tours since mid 80's, never disappoints.
Remember tomorrow from this same show is worth watching.
Loved your rant. As a person without a musical bone in my body, I can agree 100% with your comments. The professionalism engagement, expression and glaringly obvious passion that Iron Maiden bring to the stage is what hooked me in 35+ years ago.
this was shown live on TV in Finland! I remember watching this show with my dad, one of the best Iron Maiden shows! Up The Irons🤘
I couldn't agree more on the delivering part on stage. I always used to tell my band members "If u can't perform in practice as if u were on stage, then u'd most probably won't give out your best out there" It does not matter who is in the crowd or who is not. If you don't enjoy what you do, no one else will enjoy your music.
Good news. Maiden will play live in Auckland next year on 16. September. It will be your chance to see them live.
I was at that concert in 2005.
Best concert I've been to with IM. Seen them about 10 times and it is always special.
I was there and I still remember this concert so well. It was an amazing concert! And yes, they're changing their background and sometimes the stage a bit for each song. ❤
Not only is Nicko a outstading musician/drummer He;s one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. He owns a BBQ restrant here in Boca Raton Fla. Great BBQ by the way call Rock and Roll ribs. Cool place!! One of his favorite things to do is play golf. During one tour they almost had to cancel a gig. He was playing golf before a show and got hit by a way ward gold ball on the arm... Put a huge welt on his arm but played the concert anyway... True pro
Hi Andrew, love your channel, just found it. Iron Maiden is coming to the Auckland Spark Arena on september 16, 2024. Make sure to catch them live!
I’ve only seen them live 3x but the first time was my very first concert; I was 12 (1983). Then all these years later Maiden was my daughter’s first concert ever. She was 10-11. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
The reason why Nicko is such a great drummer is he was taught by James Marshall of Marshall amplification fame,as Mr Marshall was a drum instructor prior to starting Marshall amplification.
Iron maiden coming to Auckland NZ September 2024 !!!!!!!!!
Thanks for choosing Sweden / Gothenburg ! I was there,with friends :-) :-)
Wasn't at this one, but I did fly over from Scotland to see them in this stadium on the 2008 Somewhere Back in Time tour (the same tour that your reaction to Rime was on) and the energy was electric. Standing in the scorching summer heat wasn't much fun, but seeing Rime live was top notch.
I completely agree with your tangent at the end as well. Yeah, there's only 5 of us watching you, but if you go out and put 100% into your show and I like your music, I'm gonna bring folk with me next time!
Maiden live album is kick ass . Thank you for finally doing some Maiden
Amazing performance!
A very nice one from Iron Maiden is fear of the dark, so super active when Bruce is on stage. A real frontman who knows how to get the audience moving
Maiden are so big in Sweden that the swedish state television broadcast this live....
Rumours they're going south in 2024, don't miss your chance if they play NZ!
16th September 2024 Auckland, looking forward to your review 👍
To anybody who sees this comment. Especially very young people. Bruce Dickinson, the singer and probably most of the band stayed away from drugs and alcohol. They accomplished a lot in their lives because of it. If I could start all over again, I would redo my life completely different.
Not that I’m old or anything, but I held myself back a lot because of fear and insecurity.
When Bruce was young, he wanted to become a fencer and a pilot he is an international fencing champion now. He is also a pilot. And has flown the entire band around when they were on tour. You can do whatever you want in life if you stay focused, don’t let fear hold you back and stay away from drugs and alcohol. This is my best advice to anybody that reads this.
When it comes to professionalism, Maiden are in a league of their own. When I saw them live on the Seventh Son tour, the strap broke on Steve Harris' bass mid-song, and without missing a note, he dropped to one knee and kept playing while a roadie ran on and fixed his strap.
All of their stage back drops are hand painted and change several times throughout a show 🤘🏼
Need to watch then live version of 'Aces High' where there is a near scale Spitfire hanging above the stage or 'Power Slave' from the 1985 Live after Death concert DVD where a huge Eddie walks out on the stage and interacts with the band. EPIC!
My first maiden concert at 16 years old. Looking forward to the 10th some day soon, some 17 years later.
There's a video on RUclips where Nicko is playing this with School of Rock kids.
And Adrian is a really good vocalist himself
They are coming to Auckland next year - a must see!
It really doesn’t get much better than Maiden live.
Andrew, you are missing out on a whole different world by not checking out the original Iron Maiden lineup and especially the original Phantom of the Opera live version with Paul Di’Anno on vocals and Clive Burr on drums live at the Rainbow 1980. Seeing these young lads belt out this music at peak intensity will simply blow your mind. Forget all the fancy lighting and stage sets…just 5 blokes killing it. Check it out, mate.
Not forgetting mr Stratton. Ever.
Hi Andrew! Great insight in regards to the 'job'. What I saw in that video is a group of musicians who show up STONE COLD SOBER for work to do their collective jobs. I've always believed that is a key to that kind of success, that kind of performance. Sure, have a drink after work, why not, you've hopefully earned it. But when you show up for work you'ld better be straight and sober.😎
Man I wish I was at the concert absolutely amazing
this song was used on a lucozade drinks advert with british Olympic athlete daily thompson, its in youtube!
You really should do a video of their live performance of aces high on the live after death tour ,( mid 1908s) it's mind blowing.
1908?🤨
Totally agree on the pride aspect and how important it is. And I'll say at 12;30, one of the facets of Iron Maiden that I've loved and that really mattered to me is their stance against 'supplemental effects'. There's no samples, fill in tracks, hell, there's hardly any chorus or delay. I don't think any of the vocalists, even the rare harmonies, are using any pitch shift/correction. Their album Piece of Mind had a liner note mentioning how they used no studio tricks in the recording. It's not a real essential thing for all music, there's great paths using samples and automation, I use that shit as a layman constantly. But, part of Iron Maiden's spirit was always, 'this is what we are, it's the best we can do, and it's real'. You can trust them as a fan in a way that's hard to explain.
I was watching this concert on tv together with my parents :D
Iron Maiden have been around since 1975, admittedly with different band members, but they are so tight and so professional live. It’s almost like fine wine 🍷 or well aged cheese 🧀
Great tangent to go off on!
Best advice ever for any musician!
Even if you're not the greatest player.... but tick all those other boxes!
Opportunities will come your way!
You can hear so much of Sabbaths influence in this song. Thing is you've got three guitars blasting away filling the sound, whereas Iommi had his work cut out by being the only lead guitarist. Respect to him...
Even though Iron Maiden claimed they were not inspired by punk there is definitely a very punk energy to this song mixed in with the progressive elements. I definitely know that their first singer, Paul Di’Anno had a very punk attitude and aesthetic.
Steve Harris IS Iron Maiden. Never forget that.
Great choice. By the way there are hints on their social media of them coming down under next year
Maiden used normally the single or album covers as backdrops. Some songs get some tours new backdrops, or they used similar brackdrops/tourlogos for some songs.

Saw them on the book of souls tour. Amazing show, easily out perform bands half their age!
Best advice ever!! You have to know it, you have to mean it! !m!
100%
I was there and they rocked!!
Nikko is the only drummer I've ever heard of who makes the parts harder over the years, keeps adding to them. It's natural to do the opposite and simplify everything, especially after playing it hundreds of times. He does the opposite.
Very few drummers that can compare to Nikko. He's got the same energy and technical ability as like Tommy Aldridge, but only one bass drum.
The closest I've ever seen would be Leonard Haze, the original drummer for Y&T. Super aggressive, hit them like the drums talked shit about his mom and had great composition.
🤘🧙♂️🤘
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
Someone who spent 40 years destroying Clive Burr's legacy wouldn't call him a virtuous drummer. Nicko in his songs is gigantic, but he has nothing to do with the Clive era. He spits on his songs constantly.
You should totally do Iron Maiden - Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner , absolutely epic song, there's a great live version
He's done it
you've been humbled UP THE IRONS
I think Nico is doing his single-foot / double-kick thing again. He's a superman!
Nicko has some videos were the camera is recording him all the time, those are not videos from a concert, but from some events he participates. I would love to see you commenting Nicko skill in some of this videos.
Videos exemplo:
Adams Drummersfestival 2012 - Nicko McBrain
You should checkout The Journey Man live in Dortmund to hear another side to the band.
Different drummer, singer and... Guys don't forget Dennis Stratton!
Iron Maiden's coming to Aukland NZ next September
BOOM
Nicko is a rock. But I’m always struck by how relaxed he is. He looks soo relaxed and natural.
Know who else looks just like that? :) He’s big on RUclips :)
I have that same shirt on right now lol ....but yes Nicko is so Awesome on Drums
Best versions of this song- with Paul Live at the Rainbow, best with Bruce Live After Death.
With Bruce is better in Beast Over Hammersmith.
Nice message! Thx
It's rare for me to see Nicko choke the crash cymbals. His placement of them would leave me flailing around searching for one if I wanted to hit with the right hand stick.
Listen to the OG. It's on their first LP.
Check out anything from Live At Hammersmith in 1982. Clive Burr on drums, just as good as Nicko but I reckon he has a bit more of the classic british( or Ringo if you prefer ) swing in his playing. ps This song got me into maiden through the classic Lucozade advert on tele. :)
Please listen to Genghis Khan from Iron Maiden. It is a instrumental beast track. Amazing drumming there!!
This tune makes me want to drink a Lucozade with Daley Thompson!
i believe the back drop is rear projected, it is the cover of the 12" PotO IM release.
the difference in style is that this is from ... Killers , I think, and it and Iron Maiden were a bit different in some of the styling as the band was developing, but the vocalist was completely different. in my opinion more punk metal than bruces melodic almost theatrical / lyrical style. I like the first two records - still have my Killers back patch from my youth in the 80s, buy generally I will listen to the later versions of the songs from those albums live on Live After Death as that is the album i listen to most being the first big name performance i ever attended. (World Slavery Tour)... it actuality was what really got me interested in stage production work and how all of it worked. I have done a bit of local stage work for bands and theaters. I like working with the people and helping pull it off, but rarely have ever taken the stage during... much rather be behind the scenes...
Like you said, Maiden are the perfect combination of musical execution and stagecraft. They're actually not the tightest band out there...I've witnessed more than a few sloppy moments from them over the years, but overall, they're tight as hell considering the complexity and length of a lot of their songs, along with how much they move around onstage.
Watching Steve Harris in his 60s run from one wing of the stage to the other while cranking out extremely fast basslines while rarely missing a beat always makes my jaw drop.
I was at this very show! 🤘
Totally agree about always bringing your A game. Nothing more frustrating than when someone else on the bill (or your own band) isn’t doing their part, as it brings everything else down
RIP PAUL DI'ANNO YOU WILL BE MISISED. UP THE IRONS 🤘😔🤘
Andrew 24 September they are in Aukland
We always said play every show like you’re headlining Madison square garden
You're becoming a real metalhead :) :)
i know you have seen a bit of rock in rio but you should listen to sign of the cross on that the changes are insane cheers mate.
the stage backdrops often change per song.
You really need to hear Clive Burr. Different style and feel than Nicko, but equally astounding. Absolutely ridiculous right hand speed. Try Murders in the Rue Morgue, Killers, really anything from the Killers album or The Beast Over Hammersnith, live in 82
"These guys aren't getting any younger", but incredibly they aren't getting any worse, at least not noticeably so. I suggest you watch the animated video for "The Writing on the wall", the first song released from their last album, Senjutsu (2021). They are nowhere near done with their music.
