- Scotty Kilmer, mechanic for the last 48 years, shows how to fix a broken car the won't communicate with a scan tool so you can't get any information on the problem. Sometimes it's as easy as just disconnecting parts to find the problem.

💚❤💛👋
great video scotty kilmer, thanks very much for the information i really appreciate it man....Please tel me, if i am using the OBD port plugged into the car whilst the scan tool is pulled in the cigarette power port, will it cause damage to the scan tool?
Scotty Kilmer where can I get commons sense🤤🤤
Scotty as a mechanic I just went through this on a Nissan. I was at my wits end, no communication with scanner, when I decided to check the DLC pins. I retensioned them, and got the scan tool to work. I got the dreaded U1000 code which is a story into itself, but it saved me money on another ecu which wasn't the issue.
I love you man, you save me a lot of money and time thank you
Some people saying this video is a sell out. I don't see where. No name was mentioned, No link to product in description, The umbrella doesn't even have a name on it. Everybody has to make a buck. Leave the guy alone. He is a great guy. How many repair videos has he made for RUclips? How many people have sent him money for helping them out? I rest my case.
my guess is the fucking elio... but you are right
I like his videos because they are to the point. He doesn't make you sit there and watch as he unbolts a nut. We all get how to take a nut or bolt off so why waste time. He is a sweet guy in person. -John
I don't see a sell out either. Are our favorite sports teams sell outs because they wear nike and addis? It's good that people want to sponsor Scotty. Nothing wrong with that.
yeah but showing you how to unbolt a bolt is very useful. Go watch ETC's video where he changes a radiator on a Chrysler. He spent 30 minutes just getting one bolt out lol. Chrysler engineers hid it behind some plastic and metal pieces so you can't get to it unless you remove all the junk first and then you realize it's rusted and you have to cut it off. And so what is usually a 10 second unbolting turns into a two hour chore.
+Y10Q I'm a fan of Eric too. Him and Scotty have different styles. But I do like em both.
I was chasing my tail for a month trying to figure out a 2002 Buick rendezvous. Countless hours and dead ends. This video and a half hour, fixed the problem. Thank you!!!!
I have the same problem, what was the problem with your Rendezvous? May be a common issue?
which sensor was the faulty 1?
Coolant temp sensor on mine. Still haven't replaced it. Just unplugging and replugging solved the communication issue. Still throwing a code for it, but now my scan tool is working again.
Thank you Scotty for your channel. I'm just an old shade tree mechanic. The modern engines are out of my league. I'm glad you are up to pare on the latest. I really value your information. Keep up the great work you do on RUclips. It helps MORE than you know.
I love this guy! Not only is he super funny to watch he really knows what he's talking about. Every time I have a question that I am stumped on I look it up on his channel and he's never let me down thanks Scotty keep rocking brother
so glad I came across this video, I haven't been able to pass my smog, I went to 3 different locations, finally last week guy told me, it's my OBD PORT, I didn't think about one could be bend. I paid for my registration, so the price wouldn't increase, but no sticker, today when I get home I'm going to check the port. I was about to go to the dealership, they want $195 to do a diagnostic check, if they fix the issue, then they told me they would credit that towards the bill. I have a 2012 Toyota Camry SE, I LOVE MY CAR I have 103K miles on it the warranty just expired at 100K, will post an update sometime this weekend. thanks again for sharing your GREAT KNOWLEDGE ON CARS.
This helped me a TON when trying to get my 2009 Pontiac G6 to connect to my OBD2 sensor. Had the connectivity problem and turned out to be s sensor on the engine... I couldn't figure it out forever!!! After checking fuses, reading other articles online, etc.. I just kept driving it over the last year with a check engine light on because nothing seemed out of wack. I was gonna just run it to the ground because I was so stumped!
Thanks Scotty!
Decades of experience make this chap an authority repairing cars. Indeed, he does know what he talks about.
I love this guy.
I love you too
Right I havnt even met scotty and I would trust scotty with my car than most that has worked on it
Thank you scotty. I gave open heart surgery to my 7.3 and when I closed her back up I must've caused a sensor to short. No start no communication with ecm. I tried this and found the problem! Saved me so much headache
My wife won't communicate with me. I'll have to give this a try.
make sure she's plugged in
she's all hard soldered unfortunately, have to find a way to make the software srop malfunctioning
Just unplug her husband sensor... lol !
Maybe you should trade her in on a newer model !
One with oversized headlights and a tighter suspension.
You are THE MAN! had the same problem, and it was the same issue, I didnt reconnect the fuel pressure sensor completely. Plugged it back in, good as gold. Thank YOU Scotty.
Love the channel Scotty. I've tried all these methods. Nothing will work with the machines. All the lights come on. I'm speechless. I have a 2004 Northstar Cadillac Deville.
Hey. Did you ever get the problem fixed? We’re having caddy issues too
Beetlejuice HeRe. I've been a SeLF schooled Vehicle mechanic for 38 years. I know I don't know everything but I'm abs SRS and AIR-TEAM Certified. But i have a customers truck and iT won't start. I've programmed the key and fob that works but won't crank and no communication with 2 different scanner's snap-on veris and an enova. YOu just gave me a turn. Cause I was at a Dead End.. thank you. God's Speed..
Second sensor I unplugged let the scanner do its thing. Thanks for the information. You always come through.
3 times now...this guy has been my hero!
Love your attitude and how you approach problems. I have a whole new perspective for how to solve problems
Very informative video, a lot of cars out there with this problem ☺️
i would love to be your neighbors, fixin my car while getting more experience just by talking and watching you fixing other car. oh what a perfect petrol head dream hahaha
+Scotty Kilmer , if Chevrolet trucks won't communicate, it's most likely the cigarette lighter fuse. :) Thx for all your energetic videos.
This true? Lol
You saved me I was going crazy checked everything now it's working THANKS!!
been searching for hours nay days. Thank you so much. Will try😃
I know nothing about cars but lately I have decided to be a perfect mechanic in cars in every department ...so that is a reason why Im here
Thanks Scotty, you're a life saver!
replaced a rear wheel bearing assembly last weekend, so satisfying doing it yourself

Where this guy at i need him right now
YOU GOT LUCKY HONEY ,COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS ,ITS NOT ALWAYS THAT EASY ,TRUST ME ! LOL
All I hear in my head when I see any gauges moving fast or hear revving is Scott Kilmer going "REVVVV UP YOUR ENGINES!" Great videos man. I even watch the random ones just to see what the solution is. Very educational and entertaining.
Omg this would take FOREVER! The scan tools take forever to try to connect.
Great video!
Thank you for not just making the 4 millionth cigar fuse video.
I love you man....you fix my problems and save me a lot of money and time thank you again
U have no clue how much you just helped me
i have the same car with the same sorta issue and just ordered a new ECU before watching this and didn't do that testing so ill go do it now omg
well just tried unplugging a few sensors with this method but was unable to find the issue
Scotty my man you're the best automotive youtuber
Thanks for sharing friend , I guess it's always a process of elimination , cheers
Good to see a man with an eye on the future lol
Makes me wonder. Why do you need a scanner when you have to search/communicate yourself with the car ? I allways watch your videos !
hi sr, this vid is puré gold itself, thats one of the most kept technitians secrets locked out thank Scottie I always admire you. Greetings
Great test. Very intelligent, Scotty.
How do I know what computer sensors to disconnect can you list em for me
Any help?
I never thought of a umbrella. Thanks for the tip. I also have an issue like the one you describe with scan tool not fully communicating. Thanks again, I will try that.
Scotty, you're a star!
Elio! I just found my “$100 Elio t-shirt” yesterday! I’d love to see your video showcase on that story!

thank you! I enjoy your content
Hey, thanks for sharing!
Scotty tus videos son los mejores.... Eres mi "go to mecanico".
the ending was EPIC!
You are the best. Thank you, Sir.
Although unlikely, had two sensors that been shorted out or faulty you would have changed the ECU going by your logic and what you said. You would unplug one bad sensor but because the device still wouldn't communicate you assumed it was not that sensor and plugged it back in. After going through all the sensors you would still have no comms and assume it was the ECU computer. Best to unplug the sensors one at a time and check comms WITHOUT plugging them back in. That is the only way you can be 100% sure it is not one of them causing the comms problem.
Interesting.
Awesome. Short quick and informative. 👍🏼
Thank you for not being the majority of videos on this topic which strictly address checking the fuse (which is arguably the most-known and easiest problem)
Thanks for this!
Thank you! didn't know that ECUs wont communicate if a sensor is shorted. I shall try it later on my Hyundai GrandStarex
this guy actually has good points... jeeze
Great, helpful, trouble shooting tip. Thanks.
Great video, when i first bought my f150 the cigar lighter and obd wasnt working turned out to be a broken fuse.. replaced it both worked... good to know the other possible errors and fixes
One of my friends has a fairly new (two year old) Kia Cerato. He took it to the dealer for a software update, it failed at 99%. Wouldn't communicate, wouldn't start, nothing. The car was dead, all of it. ECU, dash, lighting, everything. They unplugged the battery for a few minutes and it didn't help.
Kia ordered a new ECU (warranty) but it took two weeks to arrive. While they were waiting my friend did more research into it. Turns out that you need to leave the battery disconnected for 24 hours. He told the dealer that, and they tried that. Hey presto, they were able to enter a recovery mode, reflash/update the ECU and all good. They didn't need to replace the ECU after all.
Some businesses in ebay sells rebuild car computers for like $120 - $240. What's even better is some of them reprogram it for you, just send them your VIN and whatever it's necessary. You may have to send back your old one for core exchange.. In my past, a mini van had a faulty TCM and it had P0500 and P0605 codes. I order a ebay rebuild TCM, swap it, and it still works today. The P0500 and P0605 codes disappeared when I replaced the TCM.
It's not a good idea to purchase a rebuilt computer. They only redo the cold solder joints. Keeping P=I.I.R in perspective, what do you suppose happened to the ICs while a cold solder joint in the computer gave out gradually? ICs have a very small headroom for fluctuations caused by a bad solder joint elsewhere in the circuit.
God damn it Scotty, you’ve saved me again! Subbing and watching every video from here on out. Thank you Sir!
I burst out laughing with that intro. Well done scotty you made my day again 😀
Ahh man thank you!! It's been bothering me so much that I wasn't able to use my scan tool! I look forward to hopefully finding the solution on my own. Can you show us how to replace one of those connectors? 👀
Welcome to Australia, OBD2 became standard in 2006 and anything before then generally never works regardless if you have an OBD2 port or not, however this makes you learn manufacturer specific diagnostics - Toyotas E1 and TE1 jumper, Subaru diagnostic connectors/FreeSSM/Romraider etc etc
Free SSM is my best friend for my suby here in Aus
Wow you guys were really behind the times
Tried RomRaider? much better logging support
Standard since 2006? Wow, those have been standard in US cars since 1996.
I work at a part store, we have the same scanner. Some asshat said we messed up his obd port cuz we plugged it in backwards? I'm a polish female, and I can pull off some pretty off the wall stuff...but that I cant even do that. Now. To fix my car
Thank you!! Now I know i can't just buy a 'junkyard' computer and slap it in! I'll have my mechanic replace and Program it! Also Epic BombShelter Dude!!!
Oh man, I'm having this issue with an 05 SAAB 9-5.
I'm not looking forward to going through all the sensors but, here we go!
What sensors do you have to unplug and how do you find them?
this is news to me. thanks scotty.
Very helpful thanks scotty
You crazy guy.... I like your videos. Thanks.
Nice bunker man. Really cool.
summer20105707 lol did you see the scorpion run down the wall of the bunker
Flippin’ useful. Cheers!
Great video!!
great tips thanks Scotty
Hi love the show, I have one for you it's to check all the fuses inside and outside the car , I had the same problem it's was a simple fuse that power powers the OBDII connector.
Oh the check engine light was on it was on for a lose gas cap
Mine won’t connect and I moved to an emission state. I’m a mechanic but I’ve never experienced this before. Thanks for the video.
this is awesome. will save me tons of time! can the obd be used to detect starter signal, say on PCM pins 23 and 76?
I love your videos and channel. Very helpful and strait to the point. This video was a great help. Thank you!
Worked perfectly!
Thank you
You genius bastard. Have a like and subscribe
Thank you, I will have my Evap Pressure Solenoid unplug and try, cause my new scanner not reading any codes!
Was that a scorpion running down the wall at 2:34? :O
I'm thinking the same thing...it looks like one
yep, lots of em in Texas. It's not that big of a deal if they sting you though, not much worse than a wasp sting really
but you can hear wasps
I was just gonna post that...that was a scorpion
@@scottykilmer wtf your viewers pay atttn
a great video thanks Scotty
Love you Scotty.
Great tip
Good job
Always helpful!
I have a 2004 g35 just put in a replacement engine in after blowing a hole in the block in the old one. Now it won’t start every thing looks ok hooked up right. What is happening is I am not getting any signal through the OBD2 as if the ECU was bad I took it to the Infiniti dealership and after being charged a fortune they told me that the ECU did seem to accept their reprogram but still would t get any signal . What is happening engine wise is there is no spark , fuel does come on cranks over real nice and sounds good and healthy just obviously the ECU doesn’t send signal to the coils to give it spark . I still think it’s a ECU problem I am currently saving up for a new one after buying 2 used ones just for them not to work but the dealership says they believe I messed up something on the wiring but the engine harness is still the same I’ve always had all that is different is the replacement engine which I got for the same model and year and manual transmission as well . Maybe give me your thoughts ?
Lool I needed this like two days ago
good tip.
ive been working on cars for about 8 years, i even asked everyone else around here and no one has ever heard of unplugging sensors to get a code reader to work, not that im saying your wrong its just crazy we never ran into this problem. 95% of the time its always a blown fuse linked to the cigarette lighter. the other 5% is a screwed up wire at the port
well, I've seen it many times here in hot humid houston. the head and humidity tends to wreck havoc with computer systems
around chicago everything usually rusts in half and falls off before anything can go wrong with most parts
i have a link error check fuses for ob2 good also checked fuses for cig lighter it was blown, i replaced it with a good one now my cig lighter works but i am still getting a link error do i have to drive the car to get the scanner to work without the link error after replacing the fuse? scanner works fine on my 07 bmw 335i but not on my 06 330ci it just says link error still? should i drive it and then it will reset after a drive cycle? i need it smogged, it passed 6 months ago but i need it smogged for transfer to me as guy had an old report (6 months olD) and dmv requires 90 days when transfered
Good video man.
Thanks Scotty
I appreciate this . Thank u Scott
What are some common tools used on VW's? Got a position at a VW dealership and want to make sure that I have everything I need. I read that I should definitely get a set of Torx sockets. Thanks
thanks Scotty
