All these scan tools available on the market are great for DIYers, but sadly this has also led to an increase in auto theft. For criminals in the know, it's super easy to steal a car nowadays that have a push button start. If they can gain access to the vehicle and have a blank fob and mid level scan tool, they can program the fob to start the car in a couple minutes. Sometimes older tech can be better.

Pro tip: If you have a kid away in college (or anywhere) buy a scan tool, put it in a ziplock bag and leave it in the car they are using. I bought ANDEL AD200 for around $20 BUT for some reason it does not reset codes so I wish I bought the ANDEL AD410 ($35). One can also stop at the box stores and get a free scan too. Good luck and here is hoping you do't get the call I did that the light is on.

However, it will read codes that are not pre-programmed into it. In that case, it shows you the code, and the screen reads “Definition not found. Please consult service manual“ It has saved my bacon more than once!

Checking the battery was taking a pair of pliers, carefully touching one handle to the negative side and the other to the positive, If you got a bright blue shower of sparks, then the battery was ok, If you got nothing or next to it, battery was dead...😂.

I started with a Blue Driver. I didn't like using the small screen on my smartphone so I bought a USB dongle to use with laptop software (OBDWiz and FORScan). Do you have any experience with either? I realize that not all functions will work on all cars. Is there any resource which tells what systems/modules/sensors can be checked on different cars? Specifically, my daily driver is a 1996 Dodge Intrepid (3.5L). I have a FSM and know that the car stores transmission codes. They don't come up with any scan tool I've used so I'm wondering if there is anything that will retrieve them (other than a dealer's tool).

I love the Blue Driver thing because anytime something is not mechanically wrong but it has computer software issues then I can press the "clear" button then "all codes" and it will reset any non factory code back to default on every single module in the system!

Considering it and the xtool a30m. Xtool looks like they're offering the autel level product but in the cheaper dongle form factor. Trying to see if people have ever tried both

Unnecessary to spend so much. You only need to read the code and you and look them up and google.

I use an EML327, which plugs into USB, initially bought to use with my Ford Transit via ForScan. It's just an interface, not an actual scanner as such, but the upside is I can install various brands of software onto the laptop. The downside is I need to cart the bulky laptop around to use it.
You would remember as well as I do Scotty, the days when a multimeter and hand held tach would tell us all we needed to know 😅🤣

Those ELM devices work quite well with a tool called "Torque" if you have Android.

Ahh, the days gone by. My grandmother used to say, “Don’t buy any car with things that are too fancy. The more new things they have, the more things can break.” She was in her eighties when she died in 2011. Smart lady, and a real spitfire. 😂😂

By any chance does anyone of Scotty's fans remember the company he recommended for getting auto paint? I can't find the video.
Some knuckle head skimmed the back of my sons 2021 Corolla. The plastic bumper has tire crap on it and they scratched the paint on the metal in front of the wheel also.
    Thanks for any help

Scotty you are right. Spend $300 for a better scan tool. That is 2 hours of labor you will spend at the dealer or mechanic. This way you know in advance what is the problem with your vehicle.
