TF2's Update Problem

  • And no it's not just the fact that Jungle Inferno was nearly 8 years ago.
    With each passing update of the game, more and more content gets added, regardless of the quality of said content, it all makes it's way into the game bloating up what's actually present. Primarily with the seasonal events like Smissmas and Scream Fortress which are now the few things most TF2 fans look forward to each year thanks to the disappearance of anything else, so much goes into these Seasonal events only to disappear a month later, with nearly half of the game's content being tied back and linked to them as well.
    As time goes on, the sheer size of these seasonal updates could completely squash the updates of old and outright replace them in terms of size and usage.
    So what does someone do to fix such a problem?

    Alot of people like me who came back post bot crisis and haven’t played a scream fortress in years are very easily overwhelmed with 2 dozen or so maps that i’ve never heard of. They should either do what CS has done at times and retire maps or atleast separate them by gamemode.

      I think there’s should be two new orginization types:
      -By gamemode like you said
      -By year, it’d be cool to go back and experience each years batch individually (especially if you missed some)

    Honestly, there are a number of event-restricted maps that can be safely removed from circulation... Some shouldn't have made it into the pool in the first place, to be honest.

      I think the issue then comes when people have spent money on map specific items like Strange filters and map stamps that they would then no longer be able to use. Even though I rarely see anyone actually using strange filters.

      @@GeorgeWilkins Plus, who would get to choose and would they actually choose the underperforming maps, or just the maps they themselves don't like?
      The perpetual problem of some people liking the content, some hating it, and some being ambivalent to it all, with removing pissing some people off a lot while keeping not really affecting the ones who don't like the thing they can opt out of entirely as much.

    It was last year that it was the first time I didn’t bother finishing all the contracts bc of all the map’s being added

    I think there should be a split between the more classic style Halloween maps that are just slightly tweaked version of the original maps with hell and spells, and then the ones that just completely throw the game on it’s head like crasher and every single ZI map

    Map rotation would probably be the best, putting the main four maps in the mainstays but cycle between the maps from 2015-2023 would be the healthiest choice, alongside cosmetic crates just being dropped down to once a year and being what is essentially the summer content since Halloween and Smissmas cosmetics are beginning to be tapped dry, maybe a updated crate that features a collection to return.

    I genuinely see no issue of removing at least 15 of the current SF maps, those being ICS maps (or maps that are just as low quality as ICS maps) and reskins that just take an already existing map/community map and shove SF garbage on it (like bloodwater, hassle castle, etc), and finally, and I know this is controversial, but the Zombie infection maps.
    If this were to happen (which won't sadly), Valve should also stop throwing 10 maps per update, the maximum should be 3, and this isn't just for SF, but also the other seasonal updates, and they should all be of the utmost quality
    Edit: let's not forget how our beloved casual matchmaking system makes it harder to find a decent match on the SF maps

      I would move ZI into misc maps, but only if the gamemode was maintained at all cuz right now it's a pain.
      Because it has potential for being a fun gamemode and isn't all that offensive to the overall tf2 aesthetic. It's closer to VSH imo, then to something like prop hunt that someone tried to capitalise on during smissmass.

    My solution is before Halloween update is to add a vote that gonna remove some Halloween map for the year unti there is 20 or 30 remaining

    I got tired of doing contracts cause all they do is give you halloween only cosmetics which really damper my spirits of SOME of the cosmetics looking great and barely feeling halloween specific.

    The answer is to bring back community driven events.
    The problem was that end of the line was the first one of these and was SO BAD it got the swamp themed event cancelled due to the PR backlash Valve had to handle in regards to the stuff that went down with the EotL devs.
    Invasion also had its flaws as a mostly community led event, but was overall good because Valve did do a little managing beyond the dead 0 they are used to doing.
    I think the solution would be to hire one guy to be the "TF2 Community Manager and Coordinator" to work with the community in organizing say, 1 or 2 Holiday sized themed or community updates a year around spring, or 2-3 "micro updates" about 3 times a year. This way non seasonal maps fitting for the standard map pool are actually encouraged to be made as well as general cosmetics instead of "1 update for year round stuff then 2 updates worth of workshop bloat."
    However Valve is very selective in hiring period and everyone who has enough understanding of Source and TF2 is already hired and even then are split between other Valve stuff with only the occasional TF2 seasonal approval and coordinating with any contractors like for the 64bit update. I unfortunately don't see a solution unless they pulled a CS2 and launched "TF Gravel Wars" just for the sake of having the game run on a system that a majority of devs or new hires can actually feasibly learn and manage.

    Honestly I would put most of the maps in some sort of weekly rotation, or y'know just start removing them cuz i genuinely can't find a match in 2/3 of them

    Top 3 reasons to hate tf2 halloween:
    1. The non pumpkin ones are slow grindy as hell contracts
    2. Sudden death gamemode contract(it has a bug that resets your proguess)
    3. People leaving the server making you unable to trigger damage on horseless headless man(boss contracts)

    I don't play TF2 for the super crazy whacky gamemodes. I just want the base TF2 casual experience. Nothing tops it.

    Something ive been wondering for a while regarding TF2's current content bloat (which feels like its really just been Valve's obligation to give the community shiny new toys to make up for the crappy state the game just went through) will end. How many years do we think Valve'll be willing to keep up with the yearly update tradition? (Rhetorical question nobody knows) but it is something to think about i guess.

      Bloated up the seasonal updates while packing them to the brim with content from the communities custom-made updates.
      Seriously though, they had Mayann Project, Journey to the East, Iron Gauntlet and Frontline all as full fledged community updates that they very easily could have put their stamp of approval on but haven't.
      Course Valve has internally gone through some significant shifts with TF2 as of recent so who knows what could happen in the future, not like they'd have to do much work.

      Sorting them by gamemode is still the best I think, less confusion anyways unless you can recall what gamemodes Hellstone, Gravestone, Cobblestone, Brimstone all are

      @@SpaceGuyOnline definitely not a bad idea to sort by gamemode, but can cause clutter elsewhere, but I guess that's also just a problem of them adding so many maps in general.
      maybe they could sort by gamemode in a halloween section? but then we're getting too many submenus. no real way of doing things well other than removing maps which is really hard to do once they're added (cuz someone is bound to love every map).

    I agree that maps should be sorted better for sure, or at least have the mode that they are tied to (cp, ctf, etc) i don't really agree with taking out maps but thats mostly because i get very easily bored of playing the same maps.

    The obvious answer is to let the people vote on quality and have the lower rated maps never return in the next season unless they get a major update and improved rating in the workshop

    The simplest solution I could think of (and have thought of before) is to let the community handpick the maps that will go away in the seasonal updates through a vote that the (growing) dev team for Team Fortress 2 can post on the blog tab of the team fortress website. This can be any number from 5 maps removed to 10 maps removed, but considering how much bloat we have this year (and how much it could grow), I feel like 15 removed this time around might be a safe bet because I can definitely call on a few maps that I'd rather not have in my rotation (I can't be name specific bc of how many there are, Wutville is definitely on there though)
    So the rundown would be:
    1-2 months before the Scream Fortress update, the TF2 dev team does a blog post that grants everyone the ability to vote for 5-10 maps to be removed in place of the new maps coming in (this number can be much greater, depending on if the dev team for TF2 decides whether or not to do a deep dive into how the community feels for a lot of the maps). This poll would close in 1 month.
    Remembering on how the save.tf website went, the safe bet in my own opinion for the dev team would be to host this poll on a custom website possibly called polls.tf, hosted by Cloudflare.
    After this poll has been closed, I *highly* recommend not adding as many maps as there was removed for now, at least until it would be considered reasonable to be on the same number of maps added as removed (5-10). This way, when the dev team chooses the new maps to be added into Scream Fortress, it doesn't outweigh the 15 that were just removed AND the maps that are chosen are very high quality and well cared for.
    Thoughts? I thought that this method would be the best, but I'm also super curious about what ideas you peoples have as well.

    I'd say you take maps out of the rotation after a few years when the usage doesn't exceed a certain treshhold.
    At worst, a handful of maps fall out that had a niche fan base.
    At best you only have the maps in rotation people actually play.

    new maps are separated from the rest in separate categories. you can just hide the old ones. you dont have to play them or even see them
    however, the merasmissions... they should at least get rid the ghost fort mission, god damn
    the rest of the bloat? yeah, well at least the game is functional

    add like a yearly map rotation. One year, half of the halloween maps are missing and then next year they come back and switch places with the ones that were available last year. Maybe keep a couple of fan favorites as permanent additions, but no more then like 5.

      Map rotations aren't exacly loved because it's randomness dictating what you get to play, and timed at that.

    i honestly advocate for the restoration of tf2. being undoing MYM and getting sprays as Quickplay back. tf2 since end of support with the blue moon update are just pure bloat. i honestly think they should stop one seasonal update. and give us one in March that is themeless. also for the love of everything, we don't need new maps. we don't need new warpaints we don't need new taunt (aka emotes now a days). just one or two HIGH quality maps is enough imo. PER YEAR. it not like people can play 90% of maps because of matchmaking and map selection only putting them in the most popular same five maps over and over.
