Out of 5 videos I've watched in my tutorial on the German schmear, I like your style the best! I'm going to add a wire brush to my dry finish for a little more abrasion. Then water base polycrylic over that. Thanks!
This video was most inspirational. The project was out of my comfort zone, but my wife wanted it, so...Our fireplace is irregular stone, not brick. That makes troweling it on a big waste of time. What worked best for us was scooping it up in our hands (gloves) and smacking it into the grout lines then spreading it to the rocks after that. I used my fingers as a paint brush and palms more like the trowel to wipe away the "brush strokes" left by my fingers. With two of us working it took about 5 hours for schmearing, brushing and sponging.
looks great I am trying this on my brick wall on the back deck next week. I do not have a drill to mix it with though so can I just mix the mortar by hand?
Thanks for sharing! I'm thinking about trying this on my kitchen back splash and/or my fireplace. I first saw and heard of this technique on Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines. Looks like a great way to update your space and decor on a budget. Great job and kuddos for being a do-it-yourselfer!
Hey there! What mortar mix brand did you use? Was it S or N, and was it a thin set? I am having trouble figuring out what to use on the exterior of my house. Thanks!
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing. Can this schmearing technique be used over painted cinderblock walls? We just bought a new home that was built in the 70s by a brick mason for his family, and the exterior as well as some flooring and many interior walls are brick. Additionally, the seven rooms in the basement are framed out with cinderblock (the place is a fortress). I would love to schmear them. What are your thoughts?
This is the best method I’ve seen so far. Thank you!
Best vid I’ve seen yet on this technique, well done.
Great video! I had super old brick and my living room feels so much brighter now.

Would've been nice to see the end result instead of ending the video before showing how it looks done up..
Very nice! I hope to do this technique in my own home.
Really excellent job

Thanks for the video, I’ve been wanting to do this to my fireplace too 😉👍
Thank you, very good information. Going to take on the project in a house I am flipping.
Great video! I am going to try on an ugly red/brown brick fireplace. Can you share how you use the wire brush?
