I know this is an old video, but if anyone is so inclined to respond. I'm looking to do this to my fireplace, however I cannot stand the base color of the stones around the fireplace (they are sooo 90's Lol). My question is, can I just first fully paint the stones in a black paint, let that dry then follow up with your technique to give it more of a distressed (battle worn) look? looks great I am trying this on my brick wall on the back deck next week. I do not have a drill to mix it with though so can I just mix the mortar by hand?

Just curios why you chose to paint the exterior brick instead for using the German Shmear that you used for the interior fireplace brick?? My daughter is purchasing a large home in the historic area of Savannah and is hesitant to paint vs using the mortar for the Schmear??

Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing. Can this schmearing technique be used over painted cinderblock walls? We just bought a new home that was built in the 70s by a brick mason for his family, and the exterior as well as some flooring and many interior walls are brick. Additionally, the seven rooms in the basement are framed out with cinderblock (the place is a fortress). I would love to schmear them. What are your thoughts?

Love the outcome of the fireplace. before doing the German Schmear might have used some trisodium Phosphate on the inside of the fireplace which would have really cleaned it up with a wet then shop vac. But, certainly I am trying to add to your beautiful masterpiece and not say something negative. Kindly stated!
