Hello Dustin, I know I just commented, but Ed at Eds orchids suggested watching your videos. I have been in love with phragmepediums since I was a little girl. ( The neighbor had a orchid greenhouse ). I have a bunch of different kinds of orchids and I mainly am into micro and miniature orchids besides phragmepediums. I have just recently started building my collection of phrags. I just finished watching your video on them from a year ago. I am soo thankful that Ed recommended your channel!!!! Thank you for all the information. (Hoping one day I will be able to afford the expensive ones). I don't understand why some are so expensive especially since they are so easy to grow. I have a hard time justifying that kind of money for one plant. Oh well, I will stick to the ones I can. (I love them all!!!) Thanks again!!!!
Lovely getting to see your amazing collection again with such beautiful plants. It gives the rest of us confidence in knowing that although it may help you don't always need a grow tent and humidifiers scattered around the house. Happy 2021 Dustin!
So enjoyed all of this. I was doing research and I stumbled upon your channel . I am so intrigued with your varied collection and knowledge , especially the fact that you have bred your own orchids. That begonia you showed with those remarkable leaves and your orchid seedlings with the pink leaves were so amazing . I really look forward to incorporating what you’ve done with your collection into my own👍🏻👍🏻

Hello from Australia! You do great tutorials & very good at explaining/sharing the knowledge. I didnt know anything about Phragmipedium 's & now cant wait to get one. Not easy to find in my neck of the woods though. You do a great job at propagating & making new orchid babies. Hope you get back into making content & seeing an update on your plants. Cheers!
I’ve been thinking that I wish you would post soon! Glad to see an update and your thoughts on those lights. I might be getting one of the same for my aroids (and a few orchids)
Yay! Glad everything is looking good for you! Those lights seem to be doing wonders. Thanks for sharing your experiences, especially with flasking and growing seedlings (I've been taking notes and hoping to dive into flasking for 2021if my seedpods come to maturity). Keep on growing and looking forward for your next update
Vanda always in bloom in Canada, that's amazing. Definitely a challenge to get them to bloom with indoor conditions. Glad you found a good strong light. I'm experimenting with the Orchid Hobbyist lights. So far so good, long term going to try their stronger spike producer to see if I can get my Vandas to bloom as well. Good stuff.
Congratulations on your registration (s)...and soon to be)). All those deflasked seedlings are growing up so much! I particularly loved the reds and pinks on the phalaenopsis leaves...hope to see you figure that out. Your aroids are getting huge! And you've bloomed a renenthera..in Canada? I'm sooooo jealous, I have mine under 4! T 5 led full spectrums...4 nearly 4 years... including a full south exposure. I'm seriously going to rethink my lights for a few of the light heavy feeders. Anyway, good video....good to see you and Clive🐈.
Wow. Your el choco looks so good. Mine is struggling lol you were talking about your orchids and I just felt like I entered an advance chem class lol you are very knowledgeable.
Missed seeing new vids from you, but we all understand life and it’s demands... I met Michael Kovach several times over the years at his greenhouse in Virginia and if he were still alive, I think he might appreciate how well you are doing with his namesake! I have bloomed a few, and you are right, adults are so much more forgiving. I have killed well over 90% of two flasks of them...I look forward to your community pots thriving, though! Please nix the ring light...gives you the evil eye! 😂
👀 *RAWR* haha. I will tone the ring light down, but trust me it’s better with it than not. So much back-light from the grow lights washes me out. Production notes aside-thanks Michael, means a lot both for the Kovach comments and understanding ☺️ With the seedlings, I’m 90% sure I’ll do better with those out of flask than I have in flask. Haha. If not...try try again!
@@HerebutNot You rebloomed mama, which puts you in rarified air. I expect you to have a room full soon! Now, to get all those CITES certificates so you can get rid of them!!! BTW, I grow mostly phrags, and am really impressed with your breeding program. At my age, instant gratification is almost a necessity, so I will continue to watch you breed and I’ll stick with BS seedlings and divisions for my collection. 😂
I’m willing to be a mommy for one of your babies orchid (Donate) lol . 😍 Such beauty and such a passion and loving care. Because of you I started make seeds. Such knowledge in your videos. Thank you.
I have a reflector as well. It’s such a beautiful plant. But I’m having pest issues with it as well. I found mealy bug on it, which I think I’ve gotten rid of. But some of the leaf damage doesn’t strike me as resulting from mealy bug. I’ll have to get in really close & see if I can find red mites or other nasty squatters. I appreciate your videos. Thanks for the great info 👍🏻
Great update! Just in time before the new year while I was bored of TV program and was looking to find a good video to watch! I always get very happy when I saw your posting since I know it's a quality content and I definitely learn things from you , thanks very much for sharing your knowledge. The shrimp food was very interesting ! Great discovery, and surely your begonia grew well in the space of 4 months, amazing growth rate! May be a good subject for next year to make a video on: your experimental plant foods. Thanks again for sharing and have a wonderful 2021!
Thanks so much Mary! I think you’re right-a talk on organic ferts in general is probably long overdue. Thanks for your support over the years. Have a wonderful New Years and best wishes for you as we enter ‘21 🥳
Great looking plants. Yes, you need a place with tall ceilings. You could fashion a wall or tree like structure for your most excellent orchids, and I know the Annona would like it. But beware : it opens up a whole new degree of what you can talk yourself into plant wise. Everyone should have a Ravenala!
Hi five for the kovachii, very nice specimen. Mine has no luck as I grow it in the subtropical area, even though I provide air-conditioning at night, the day temp. might still be too high for it last summer, and it reduced to something like seedling. Now that winter temp is low, it seems to pick up again, though I am not sure what will happen when the summer comes again. Fingers crossed with mine. By the way, happy new year :)
Really appreciate your channel. I'm going to give germination a try using the step by step guide. I've pollinated a pseudopeloric NoId phal (both pod parent and pollen parent were mutated) and have a seed pod!
Doooo it! The neatest thing about breeding your own orchids is that you get first access to the unique things. Like variegated leaves or pink leaves or or or. Worth it.
Man this phrag is crazy 😂 also of course your plants grow big and fast, you take care of them so well that they give you their best. Good thing that you speak about temperature for the seeds because i have the same problem with mines I guess. Someone told me that growing ludisia discolor seeds is complicated but i tryed anyway, too soon to know but i wait. Was laughting to tears then you comparated your size to your plants 😂
Good to see your video after a long time. It seems you might run out of room soon. Any thoughts on donating any of your least favourite orchids 😏, I am ready to adopt 👍. 😊
So great to see an update! Sorry I'm late to the party 🥳 Everything is looking great! Your seedlings are going to take over the house soon 😀 Do you find your phrags in general self-pollinate alot? I seem to notice most of the paphs I have end up self-pollinating 😆 My Alocasia really love semi-hydro so I definitely agree they seem to love constant moisture. Sorry, I know semi-hydro isn't for you, I'm not trying to poke at it 😆 Syngonium also really seem to love constant moisture.
No no - I agree. I did a caresheet for Alocasia baginda and I even noted that it might be a good specimen for semihydro. I have heard of some people's plants crashing if the roots were kept too wet, but as you know with some terrestrial orchids, calcium deficiency can be a significant issue for plants adapted to alkaline soils. So, I think ppl who have had A. baginda crash in s/h maybe had that happen because of low calcium. Some of the biggest plants I've seen were in semihydro, so I think they're all about that moisture. Regarding the phrags, I do find kovachii and kovachii hybrids self pollinate easily. That's why I think my "Fritz Schomburg" was actually kovachii. My bet is that the parent pod was kovachii and they pollinated it with besseae. I bet many or most of the seeds were actually Fritz Schomburg, but maybe some of the kovachii pollen had melted or got water on it and also lead to self pollination so that the seed pod was actually a mix of kovachii x self and kovachii x besseae. That kovachii plant specifically self pollinates pretty much every flower so if I use it in hybrids in the future, it won't be using the kovachii as the pod parent - pollen donor only.
@@HerebutNot That's what I fins a bit intimidating about all the orchids I have that self pollinate! You may end up thinking you've pollinated something, and it not be that at all! My alocasia cuprea has been in semi-hydro from a little baby plug plant, and it now has a seed pod. Excited to try sowing that! I pollinated my ludisia discolor alba with macodes petola, and some of the flowers are swelling. But some of the flowers that I didnt pollinate are also swelling 🤦♀️😂 So I think I just have a load of ludisia x selfs growing...
Im so glad found your channel and thank you for introducing ray 66 led to us newbies. New York winters are gloomy and depressing so i bought those lights. Just want to ask you how hight should i hang it, mostly cattleyas on that window sill. Thank you again
I also had faded leaves in my macodes petola, but then I noticed the sphagnum had become too compacted and was retaining too much water and lightly suffocating the roots. The leaves also started to curl like yours. Once I loosened up the sphagnum, the leaves got flatter and firmer and some of the color started to come back to them, so have a look and see if that doesn't make a difference.
Yeah, what's interesting is that was why I repotted in the first place. In one of my recent videos I'd repotted into new sphagnum but that lightness didn't resolve. I suspect now that it's because the light is quite bright and the new growths are quite compact/short - this has caused the leaves to open and cluster in bunches rather than fully unfurl and I'm thinking maybe there just isn't enough airflow. If you look at my other plant in this video beside this one - it's leaves are nice and spaced out and have good color. So...I'm going to keep an eye on it and in the spring I'll probably thin it out a bit so there is better airflow between the leaves and I'll repot at the same time. Thanks for your tips/thoughts!
@@HerebutNot Good luck! Post a video of how it goes (with both plants and their different methods). I'm experimenting with mine as well, so I'd be curious to compare progress. By the way, I also have some wonky new growth from after the recovery process. I'm speculating it might just be its odd reaction to growth after stress and might normalize after a while. Fingers crossed!
You have soursop?! So cool! I'm sold! I also have that plant and it's grown from seeds, which I gave some to my friends. Theirs thrive but mine died due to thrips. But my aunt gave me some of her soursop seedlings and a guava plant all grown from seeds as well. So I got them growing nice and healthy in the balcony during the summer. I'm worried how they will do this winter season when I take them inside. I'm also from Canada. Anyway, I love your plants and care tips (from your page). Thank you for sharing 🙂
Sorry to hear you've been losing some enthusiasm, but honestly, who is quite themselves since spring of 2020? Thank you for the sharing you are able to do, it's informative with just enough of it over my head to feel like I'm learning, but not so far over my head as to be inaccessible. I refer back to your blog frequently for information and just today was watching your video on Phrag kovachii. There's one coming available and I wanted to know if I should pursue it or not and your a trusted source of info, as well as a fellow indoor northern grower. There is always endless fluff available, it's fun eye candy, but little more. I'm happy to wait until inspiration strikes you.
Wow-thank you so much for the kinds words. Really inspiring, honestly. Thank you. Regarding kovachii...if you're in a cooler climate and have moderate light, I'd say go for it. They're not as hard as some people make them out to be-but if your temps are regularly over 30C, I think that's where a grower runs into problems. This summer was very hot in Calgary and my kovachii suffered for sure...not dead...but I lost more growth than I normally do. Hope that helps with your decision :)
@@HerebutNot Thank you so much for the response, I didn't expect that! I have a 3 season room I heat over the winter for my plants. I keep a little electric heater in the 60-65 range (it's a desire for heat vs awareness of expense thing) over the winter. The sun gets it higher sometimes and I warm it more on watering days, but that's the min for the room. I also have a good southern window in the dining room not all that far from an air conditioner, so I'm thinking that would get it good sun and cooler temps in the summer. Between your article, video and a nice article from AOS, I think I'm ready to tackle it. Now I just have to hope I can get it. It's part of a NH Orchid Society auction of a local collection tomorrow. Small specimen, but I'm hopeful I can grown now. Thank you.
Hi, my orchid friend, I hope you are well. You haven't posted a video for a long time. How is your orchid collection now? I hope your orchids are flowering well.
Loved seeing an update. I can see Forgetii is still alive. My Clarinervium is still alive, but really not growing much. Most of my Phals are all in spike or currently in bloom (6 of 9?)
Hi Dustin it is always great to look at your results I have never told you but the thinh I'm always wondering when I see your green pets is how do you teach Clyde to be apart from your home jungle he has to be the most well educated cat in the world😻🙀🙏💖
Everything looks amazing! Especially all the seedlings - congratulations on the newly registered phrags, they're gorgeous! 👏👏👏 A question: do you feed your seedling phrags the same way / give them the same light as the adults?
Wow!!! I am new to your channel. I definitely need to change my light!! What do you fertilize with or do you have a video on that?? Love your plants!!😁😁👍
Glad to see you're alive and well and still looking sexy. I was thinking about you a few months ago when I saw Philodendron spiritus sancti for sale. Holy crap expensive but I could picture you drooling over the leaves. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2021. Take care and hope to see at least a little more content from you in the coming year.
Ohhhh Michael, you have no idea how much I want to own a spiritus sancti. I feel like I’d have to swap out one of my monsters in order to accommodate one of those. But...doesn’t matter-there’s no way I’m paying over $1K for a plant (let alone $10K) 😂😂😂 Happy New Years and thanks for the support 🎉 🎈
@@HerebutNot I kinda figured it was on your dream list. It is certainly not cheap. I thought people were out of their mind when I saw the price, then I started researching and it is almost extinct in the wild and, even in cultivation, there is not a large number of plants due to difficulty propagating it. (I'm guessing it is one of those plants that cannot be propagated by tissue culture?). Who knows, maybe you'll win the lottery and you'll be able to get one.
@@michaelmccarthy4077 I hear there are indeed some difficulties with PSS in tissue culture but it the way demand is going, I’m certain it will eventually get there. At the end of the day, it always comes down to demand. However, companies are getting smarter, unfortunately. Remember what happened with R. Tetrasperma; they learned from that experience and now, despite Philodendron Pink Princess already having been tissue cultured, they are holding on to stocks and releasing them gradually just so the prices do not plummet...
Dustin!!! Happy 2021!! Where you gonna live when all of those seedlings overtake your apartment? I just had an animation in my mind of that unfolding!! 😄♥️
Hey Dustin: Have you used a silicon supplement for your orchids at all? Im thinking of experimenting with DG Pro-TeKt but don’t know the tds/ppm to try. Thanks
Hi Dustin, huge fan from nyc. I hope you see this question. I recently just purchased this exact light, ray 66 but am unsure as to the coverage. Obviously 66” long but what about the width? I’m sure this is mostly dictated on how high it hangs but I was hoping you can shed some light as I’m planning ahead before it arrives. Thank you so much. Hugs
Your videos although infrequent are always a wealth of information and inspiring. Quality not quantity as they say. 😊 Was also wondering if you had any thoughts on anthuriums with stunted leaf growth? My Crystallinum and Forgetii each produced a leaf that grew about half the size of the preceding ones and just stopped growing. I’m in NYC, although it’s winter, I provide decent humidity and indirect light with supplemental grow light as well. Have you experienced this before? Thanks in advance for any advice. 🙏
Mmmmmm - in general I feel if leaves are getting smaller it's because something is getting pinched. Maybe water flow is reduced. Maybe light is reduced. Maybe temps are too cool for what the plant prefers. Or maybe it's running low on nutrients? Given the time of the year, it's possible that it's related to light. However, I have had a similar sort of deal with my forgettii and was leaning toward the possibility that they don't like mild temps and prefer quite warm conditions? Last year my one stopped growing and dropped a lot of leaves-this year my green form stopped growing and dropped all but one leaf. That said...my first forgettii (that dropped leaves last year) actually put out two huge leaves in fall and has since flowered twice. SO....I don't have enough evidence to say for sure that they are "seasonal". I suggest you check your temps and if they're good, consider thinking about your light levels and period and consider if the light now is shorter/darker than it was earlier in the summer. Bit of a mouthful - hope that helps.
@@HerebutNot Thanks for the advice. My temps hover around 73-76F (23-24C) and I’m still experimenting with my light so that might be the culprit. Will keep an eye on everything else. Although it stopped growing, it hasn’t dropped any leaves (yet) 🤞 so I’m grateful for that. Once again, thanks for your thoughts 🙏
I noticed in one of your videos that you had a really nice African violet. What exactly are your growing conditions for it? Soil, light, water... I see it is under growing lights. Mine is not doing well at all. Had it for many years in a north facing window, bloomed regularly. The foliage always looked pretty shabby, though. I repotted it in a pumice/soil mix, the roots were in bad shape. Was thinking of putting it in a east facing window, once it starts looking better. Any advice?
I am mad jealous of your amazing gift. I love looking at your plants.. I wondered could I ask you. Have you any idea where I could buy a flask to start trying to grow some orchids I am so interested but have no idea where to start. As I live in Ireland and have no idea where to even find someone with a flask to sell.. Or if anyone reads this post that knows where I can get a flask I woukd be very gratefull..
I brought vanda pachara delight from orchid shop in Edmonton. However, it never bloom. I wanna know what kind of light that you use and where I can get them? Thank you.
my alocasia like dragon scale do okay with dry between watering but their leaf structure suffers. my oaxaca is still recovering from me allowing drying; i’m hoping by winter everything will be okay. i think the plant literally goes into shock when it does not have enough water.
I’m looking at getting the same light, or something similar. How are you hanging yours? I can’t tell if that’s some sort of stand it’s hanging from, or part of the window (behind the table)
@@khailac it’s from a shower caddy (tension rod type). I asked him on Instagram and after binging videos later I found he says it in an older video :) I got the same light (44” though) and hung from the ceiling cause it only weighs like 2lbs
hi so i'm trying to grow some phrags and i finding it kinda hard i live in southern ontario (Detroit) i think it gets to hot here goes into the 30's c or 90's during day and 70.s at nite or 24 at nite. i thinking this its to hot for them had a couple die in summer here .....can u let me know what ur day and nite temps are for the different seasons please ? thanks and nice plants u got
Yes, I would. Most plants outside get a daily dose of “filtered direct sun” for anywhere from 8-12hours. In a home, like near this east window, the “filtered direct light” is only for a subset of those hours. In the winter for example, when daylight hours here are only 7 hours total, the plants may only get 2-3 hours of light. In the middle of summer light is less of an issue, but for the other 7 months or so, my goal is for optimal growth, and that’s where the LEDs come in (regardless of plant type)
Red mites-they’re the fricken worst! I used mineral oil and water. You have to unpot the plant, toss the old media, and liberally apply 3 times in a row with 5 minute breaks all over the whole plant (for orchids)-for the aroids, don’t unpot, but you need to watch for any survivors. Soak the whole damn plant and repeat application for 3-5 weeks in a row. Sometimes the mineral oil jacks up the leaves, so be prepared for gross looking leaves. New ones should come in better. Here’s a link for more info: herebutnot.com/pesticide-recipe-best-bug-killing-mealybugs-aphids-thrips-orchids/
@@HerebutNot Thanks for the advice. This is going to be a nightmare to get rid of these little beasts. And they are so hard to see. I didn’t think I’d have to repot... I didn’t know they’d live down in the media. I think they are on some of my paths and on my coelogyne. And on at least 1 dendrobium. I’m now on the attack 😊😊 thanks again
@@Garnetspagrud - good luck! They’re a pain to deal with. Vigilance/consistency is key. That oil smothers them fairly well as long as you get full coverage. You should only need to unpot for your first treatment-as long as you really soak the whole thing down. Still repeat treatments on the leaves week over week, but I have found a single root treatment seems to work
@@HerebutNot Miss your videos!!! I found a non toxic mite spray that works. Here’s the recipe Spider mite spray In pump spray add 1 quart warm water plus: - 2 tablespoons Dr Woods Peppermint soap - 2 tablespoons Dr woods Tea tree 2 - 1 teaspoon Peroxide 1% - 1/2 cup Alcohol 70%

Hi here but.I love your collections. Wow .new on your channel. Thanks for sharing Sir.
would love to see how you self pollinate your orchids!
Jewel orchids are my nemesis, I blame you for that. Happy New Year my man. Really enjoy your videos.
Good evening Dustin I am from Uzbekistan we are evening now l have seen your video thanks for your information
Very nice orchild 👏👏
woah, i subscribed this year but didn’t know you were from alberta! sending love from calgary 🥰🥰
Worth it.
Great tips.
If you're into it, I would LOVE to see a more elaborate video on your jewel alocasia's!! I've had so much success based on some of your content
Wonderful your flowers
Super nice video 👍!!!!!
Wait..... I have the same shirt that you’re wearing omg and I’m wearing it now hahaha
Looks better in you💚✅
Im so glad found your channel and thank you for introducing ray 66 led to us newbies.
Oh my gosh. That begonia. I need to get one some day
You have soursop?! So cool!
Thank you.
I like your vanda pachara delight
Hi, my orchid friend, I hope you are well. You haven't posted a video for a long time. How is your orchid collection now? I hope your orchids are flowering well.
Loved seeing an update. I can see Forgetii is still alive. My Clarinervium is still alive, but really not growing much. Most of my Phals are all in spike or currently in bloom (6 of 9?)
Sweet man. I actually pollinated my forgetii - so I’m hoping I get seeds soon
Where did you go?
Hi Dustin it is always great to look at your results I have never told you but the thinh I'm always wondering when I see your green pets is how do you teach Clyde to be apart from your home jungle he has to be the most well educated cat in the world😻🙀🙏💖
Merci, très belle video 👍👍👍
Love your content. Do you ever do talks for orchid clubs?
Just found you. Fascinating content🤗✅
Everything looks amazing! Especially all the seedlings - congratulations on the newly registered phrags, they're gorgeous! 👏👏👏
A question: do you feed your seedling phrags the same way / give them the same light as the adults?
Wow!!! I am new to your channel. I definitely need to change my light!! What do you fertilize with or do you have a video on that?? Love your plants!!😁😁👍
missed your videos :)
Nice shirt man! I mean this is a plant video right? Nice plants too.
Hi - I live in Calgary too & want to try phragmapediums and paphiopedilums- should I use tap water or distilled or tap water & change the pH-
thanks!
You should be fine with just tap water. Both of those types are generally okay with slightly alkaline water like we have.
Thanks! Just ordered 3 paphs and one phrag so that helps!
I also have the same question about how the light is hung. Thanks!
@@khailac it’s from a shower caddy (tension rod type). I asked him on Instagram and after binging videos later I found he says it in an older video :) I got the same light (44” though) and hung from the ceiling cause it only weighs like 2lbs
@@seanupton3170 Thanks for the info, Sean!
Agreed. Alocasia do not like dry pots. They like to be moist.
hi so i'm trying to grow some phrags and i finding it kinda hard i live in southern ontario (Detroit) i think it gets to hot here goes into the 30's c or 90's during day and 70.s at nite or 24 at nite. i thinking this its to hot for them had a couple die in summer here .....can u let me know what ur day and nite temps are for the different seasons please ? thanks and nice plants u got
You have a decent bright window and yet you added these LEDs? Would you do that if you had ONLY Aroids?
Yes, I would. Most plants outside get a daily dose of “filtered direct sun” for anywhere from 8-12hours. In a home, like near this east window, the “filtered direct light” is only for a subset of those hours. In the winter for example, when daylight hours here are only 7 hours total, the plants may only get 2-3 hours of light. In the middle of summer light is less of an issue, but for the other 7 months or so, my goal is for optimal growth, and that’s where the LEDs come in (regardless of plant type)
Hi happy new year! How did you kill off the red mites? Thanks
Flask’d Phal seedlings look amazing BTW you’re an amazing grower.
Here’s a link for more info:

Here’s the recipe
Spider mite spray
In pump spray add 1 quart warm water plus:
- 2 tablespoons Dr Woods Peppermint soap
- 2 tablespoons Dr woods Tea tree 2
- 1 teaspoon Peroxide 1%
- 1/2 cup Alcohol 70%
hi which city do you live in, i am in montreal, the winter is very dry and there is definitely not enough light, can you share your lighting solution
