What a Sunday treat! Soft spoken Benji with Winnie and Theo chasing each other in the background had me rolling on the floor. Didn’t know where to direct my attention. It couldn’t have been more perfect if you had planned it. Loved the video.
That poor tree does not stand a chance against the 4 legged beasts of fun 🤣 That said this seems an amazing hobby/ art form. Can’t wait to try it! Thanks for all the info!
you can also make underwater kokedama quite easily! I made a ball of muddy top soil and some root tabs, wrapped it in the end of black pantyhose, then covered the panty hose with plenty of torn up java moss, and wrapped it in place by just spreading a black hairnet over the whole ball-- no need to do several rounds of thread! the hairnet was virtually invisible from the start, but with a few weeks of growth it was completely covered. with a good pair of angled planting tweezers, you can easily insert a plant into the top of the ball also, tearing a tiny hole through the panty hose so it reaches the root. it absolutely thrived in a vase full of water under a daylight lamp.
After watching 'Tutorial and Care for Live Moss Ball Houseplant,' I’m pretty sure I just found my new low-maintenance best friend! 😂 It doesn’t ask for much-just a little water and some love. Who knew a ball of moss could give me so much responsibility AND zen vibes at the same time?
I started watching your videos in 2021 when I was feeding my daughter late at night and needed something calming… now I’m doing the same with my son and his name is Benji! 💚 hopefully he picks something up and becomes a great gardener one day 🤞
Thank you for this well thought out and explained tutorial. It is so lovely to see such a well spoken young man doing positive, creative, informative high-value content. And your fur babies were the icing on the cake. I just got 2 kittens 2 weeks ago after one of my older cats passed and the ensuing chaos is just so funny!
Catch rain water , or leave your town water in a bucket or bowl for 24 to 48 hrs , that gives it enough time to evaporate all the chemicals out . Loved this video, thank you for sharing and thank you to your fur babies for sharing there time ❤
rainwater is the easiest and cheapest option. But i know in some places in the US it's literally illegal to catch rainwater, crazy as that is. But just leaving tap water out to air won't always work. If It's very hard water, so full of minerals, those will not evaporate and as you keep watering you moss and the water evaporates, more and more of the minerals will be left behind on the moss which they don't like. Also while a lot of treated tap water uses chlorine which does evaporate if you leave it out, more water treatment plants are also using chloramine, which doesn't evaporate. So depending on your area you might well still have water treatment chemicals left even after letting it sit. So if you live somewhere with very soft water and that only uses chlorine to treat its water then leaving tap water out to air will work fine. If you live somewhere with either hard water, or chloramine in your water or both that won't work and you need one of the other options
I have a fica bonsai I have babied for 25 years. It is beautiful. This is the first time I have seen kokedama bonsai and I am smitten. Husband is "Oh no! Not another one!" I shall wait until spring because I live in a temperate rainforest which provides an abundance of beautiful moss. I must say I love moss so this really appeals to me. Thank you for this lovely tutorial. It will be difficult waiting until spring! I love the rock foundation. Perhaps a gorgeous piece of driftwood would work as well? I live on the coast of the Salish Sea. Thus is so exciting. ❤
Thank you for this tutorial Benji! I can't wait to make a kokedama with a little indoor bonsai. I feel like my platycerium mounting skills have prepared me for this day lol
Hi Benji, I must say for a young man teaching us this method is amazing, plus ur voice is soft & gentle, pleasing to the ears, I feel that's very important when one teaches. It also shows Love, compassion, & patience with ur craft. I truly admire ur videos, and I will continue to follow & share the new knowledge that you bring to the internet and RUclips ❤❤❤ We here in the states also use these clay balls called LECA Clay balls or beads, I had transferred all my plants from soil to the LECA balls, as it does NOT have tiny bugs in the house, like the ground soil or potting soil mix.
Zero Water brand filter for the win! I’ve had one of the pitchers for years and I really notice the difference in taste, and use for my sensitive plants because it removes chlorine and TDS. Definitely has paid for itself many times over vs buying packaged filtered water. I see them on FB marketplace too pretty often. That and I water my plants with fish tank water and they love it. Already conditioned and fertilized. But now I have too many plants!
That was great. I was killing my mosses with too much water, and you sorted out my thinking on how to get just enough into them. I loved your presentation of them, and they are like little artworks. You have a wonderful eye for shapes.
I watched the first few minutes of this video three times. I had to because I kept getting distracted. Hate to tell you this but the critters stole the show. They was too adorable not to catch my attention and I am usually pretty focused when I am on a mission to learn stuff. LOL
This was so good, the kitty and dog play was very enjoyable. Theo really has taken to that kitty so well, seems like they are just old friends. Your detailed step by step on building the Kokedama was perfect!
I wanted to fast-forward the video and cut to the how-to, but the way you speak is so soft and soothing like meditation that I couldn't help to watch the whole video. Anyway, it's such a great tutorial! Namaste😂
The beginning of this video is me trying to survive 2024: just calmly focus on what you know and love, WHILE CHAOS REIGNS 😅😭😂 and kokodama seem cool as hell 💚
Не владею английским в такой степени,но слушала Вас,не отрываясь...и даже влюбилась,как жаль,что по возрасту_ я,как Ваша мама,наверное...😅❤🎉🙏🙌Благодарю за бонсай🙏
What a beautiful way to care for and keep plants! How do you care for kokedamas if you need to be away for a week/two? Can you put it temporarily in a terrarium, or is there a way to ensure it won't dry out when traveling?
I sometimes put them in plastic grocery bags or large plastic containers. Anything to keep the humidity! Whenever I come back, the moss always looks better than I left it
I love your presentation! Very thoughtful, relaxing and interesting. The subject matter is a beautiful addition or change up for holidays, or all year round... can't wait to try.
I have made four of these and my house has mini blinds I cannot remove so I went online to Walmart and ordered tension rods and white sheers the length of the windows and popped in the tension rods with the sheers behind the blinds. I can then keep the blinds opened all the way but the light if filtered from the sheers. It also gives a softened glow into the rooms from the bright white of the sheers. Both the tension rods and sheer curtains were super cheap and a great filter. I have one staged in a blue danube teacup on a saucer.
Thank you so much for this! Living in the eastern Midwest, folks don’t do much like this around here. I’ve always been interested in how the kokedama (spelling is wrong, I’m sure)are put together. Might make a couple of my own! Thanks again, Benji!
i gotta start the video over cause i realized i was just watching the little babies in the background like one of those baby stim videos. i loved the video i had never thought about planting flowers other than aroids indoors and pantie hose are an amazing tip
This is amazing, Benji!! Other kokedama tutorials I've seen all use soil - which is really messy. QUESTION - can decomposed granite be used instead of the akadama? I sift DG for my succulent soil mix and save the larger pieces for topsoil, which are about the same size as the akadama. I'm worried it would be too heavy. So would using some vermiculite work for retention and to lighten it? It would be nice to use what I already have. I'm not able to find a good answer on Google yet 😅. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you for the tutorial I normally make Ikebana for friends at Christmas but have been thinking of making Kokedama having now watched you will definitely be making Kokedama's as gifts this coming Christmas. Your home reminds me of the Eames House by Charles & Ray Eames both beautiful. x Im British so we always end with a X
Hello Benji, I loved your video. I live in Switzerland and there is moss growing in the forest. One can also find moss growing on walls by the parks, especially when it rains a lot. Do you think that moss would be suitable to make a Kokedama?, The problem is, I have no clue at what type of moss it is.
Thank you for this well organized tutorial. Though I love kokedama, I live in San Diego about 10 miles inland, no air conditioning, west&east facing windows, under a sun that loves to hang out in the west facing windows and chat for about 5 hours (oh hey tree, I see you're having ice cream for lunch today! want me to warm that up for you?) So I've been unable to provide the plants that require high moisture/shade what they need most. I feel like I might be able to have a few in the east facing windows. I appreciate all the information you generously provided. I have hope...
kokedama's stick to me bc in my childhood my grandmother used to make a lot of kokadamas, and always was teaching me ab them. this really reminds me of that memory. it'ss so nice! thank u
I thoroughly enjoyed your Wonderful presentation. You have a gift for teaching in that you emanate your expertise with peace, calm, compassionate caring. So glad I came across your video.
Hi Benji! This is going to become another favorite video! YOU do make it look very easy! Question, where do you get your star grass, locally, or online? ty
Great video, I'm excited to try this! I know you mentioned thrift stores for display bowls/plates, would love to know more about where else you source your display vessels
