    I like that the light companies are putting out long lights instead of the square or rectangle box lights. So much more useful for rack and window growing.

    Wow! There is a noticable increase in the light! I like the length of that strip too, hopefully the ballast doesn't create to much heat. It will be interesting to see in about a month or two, your aroids will be the harbingers of success. I'll pop on over to the blog, I'd like to see more about this light...thanks Dustin!

    That grow light looks awesome! I'm getting grow light envy 😂 I love that it's super long, much more useful for home growers I think. At some point I really want to redo my rack lighting, but they have worked great for so long it seems like a waste. But they could for sure be better. Hmm... I totally agree that, when you're spending money on a collection you love, it's worth investing in decent lighting. Thanks for the video! 😀

    Thank you for this! I'm planning to buy an apartment and knowing I can this easily adjust how much and what type of light my plants will get eliminates the condition it has the right orientation :)
    I just don't know where you bought that rack which carries the lines that attach to the light but I'm sure something can be figured out. I don't mind drilling the ceiling but having the lines go down like 1.5m just to hover at that height seems unnecessary

  • @twlohwrists

    ooo! I really like the length and power on this light. I noticed you put it pretty close to your orchids.. did you end up lifting it a bit? or are the plants happy? Would you use this with your aroids? Or would it be just too bright?
    Thanks!

      I know! Buuuut...it’s more hyping “new plants” that I don’t like, you know? I use my Instagram to log new plants because I can benchmark their growth later on, right? But I donno...there’s something about “watch me open gifts” that just feels weird to me-like going to a Christmas party where you all watch one friend open their gifts...lol. Probably just me, but for those reasons, I don’t do unboxings. I feel like grow lights are a bit different because it’s focused on plant care rather than plant hype, and we could all use more of that. Also...I don’t have anymore room for new plants 🙈

    Hey Dustin! We talked a while back about cheap LED shop lights from Amazon. I ended up getting them...that was late summer of 2019. It's now Jan 2020 and so far all my orchids are doing great with them. It will be interesting to see how they do over a couple years of using them. I'm growing mostly complex hybrid phals.

    • @HerebutNot
      @HerebutNot  4 года назад +1

      Matthew - nice! That’s good to know. I think I’ve found even with the good light the impact is always better if you’re providing more photons to the plants-but in some cases if there’s too much blue light it resulted in chlorosis and what not. Awesome that your lights are working. This new light has caused like a significant boost in growth for my plants-leaves are lightening up, but the aroids have pushed new leaves that are about 30% larger than the previous. Will be looking forward to seeing more of your collection and Tnx for the update. I’ll be sure to let peeps know who are asking about grow lights

    skin oils on the bulbs is OLD, like ancient advice related to high intensity discharge HID lamps like MH and HPS that didn't have envelopes. and FWIW, you won't be touching the actual LEDs themselves since they have either an optical lens or just a protective lens. Cool light though, and good on ya for recognizing the importance of proper lighting

    Hi there! I read your recent articles regarding anthurium and other aroid care. Fantastic. I also noticed you have an A. pseudosceptible! I will be getting one after months of searching and wanted to ask how yours is being kept happy for eight years! Thanks!

    • @HerebutNot
      @HerebutNot  4 года назад

      Hey, thanks Dale! My pseudosceptible just grows in a pot with peatmoss, perlite and bark actually. I question if it’s a true pseudosceptible though, because the leaves are only about a foot and a half long? They never have amounted to the large leaves I’ve seen online and so I wonder if it’s a hybrid or some other species. If it is indeed the right species, I assume the reason it is still alive is because my home temps are quite mild - it’s a slow grows and has 7 leaves. Tends to grow faster in the winter, but I would attribute that to light more than temps, as the sun penetrates further into our condo in the winter and the plant is the only one I don’t grow near the windows.

      We did enjoy and and was quite proud of myself on only spending 205.00 emerging with a bunch of great orchids and tons of supplies. You should visit Ecuador. Our country is stunning and you can see tons of orchids in the general area of Quito very easily. You can see tons of cloud forest orchids in Mindo and on the same day ditches FULL of Sobralias.
      I found this post in an old orchid blog and thought you might get a chuckle. Really worth a read.
      "How to Kill An Orchid
      Most people prefer to keep their orchids alive, but some people are dead-set on killing them. If that’s you, then you’ll enjoy this handy list of tried-and-true orchid destruction tips. If you prefer to keep your orchids alive, avoid these common mistakes:
      Overwatering - This is a quick, easy, and common assassination method. Excess water rots the potting media, and eventually suffocates the roots. To speed things up, allow the flower pot to sit in a tray of water. This will quickly cause the orchid roots and potting media to rot. Death within a week. The tray of water and rotting roots may stink and attract flies, so you get a bonus."

    I’ve been looking at the ray 66, it’s good to hear the the wait wasn’t as long as they claimed. What is the footprint of the light when its up a foot or so above the plants. Does it spread the light out 20-24 inch area evenly or is it just blasting straight down. Awesome video.

    • @HerebutNot
      @HerebutNot  4 года назад

      Matt M - yeah, it spreads light well. I’m loving it so far - have lowered it a couple times b/c the spread is almost too much. Haven’t had any leaf chlorosis yet, so we’ll see how the plants respond. Thanks for the encouragement - wasn’t sure if a plant light unboxing would be well-received. Happy New Year man!

      I think because there is really so little information other than specs on this Particular fluence light an unboxing and showing real world Application is very good idea and really helpful. Some of the other larger fluence lights have had so many videos it wouldn’t be worth while.

    I've been running a RAY44 for the last year and a half. I'm going to add another but ship times at fluence say 45-60 days. How long did you wait to receive your light? It's certainly worth the wait, but I'm thinking of getting the HLG saber 100w as I'd like a second tier to grow more over the winter.Thanks in advance. Enjoy your new light!

    • @HerebutNot
      @HerebutNot  4 года назад

      Ratsinsky - well...the site says 45-60 days, but they shipped it within a week. Lol. I actually was expecting the lead time and had it shipped to my work, thankfully it arrived on my last day before the holiday break. I don’t know if I lucked out, or maybe they have that disclaimer for larger orders? Either way, it arrived faster than expected.
      With your RAY44, did you find there was a noticeable change in growth or photomorphogenesis (the look of the plants in response to the light)?

    Hey Dustin, question for you. I bought a "mini flask" of Phal gigantea about a month ago and haven't deflasked them yet (the media was still firm on the bottom when it arrived). It looks to me like the plants had been recently replated into this container as roots are just now extending into the media. My question is, how long do you think I should leave them before deflasking? The plants are still small, two or three leaves only. My thinking is to leave them until the roots have grown through the media or, heaven forbid, until I see signs of contamination. Thoughts?
