Hello. Your video stimulates the pragmatic sense of the engineer in me. Here's why. Your pliers exert vertical shear on the glass to be cut. Moreover, the cutting tools are discs. We will likely agree on these two points. Now, if the shear is vertical, and the discs have the same geometry upstream and downstream of the contact point, there is no physical reason why the cut should be different depending on whether you cut forward or backward on the workpiece. Skeptical? Let me give you another example: depending on whether the mosaic artist is left-handed or right-handed, one will cut forward while the other cuts backward relative to the raw glass. Now, if your theory were correct, then one of the two would have a cleaner cut than the other. Considering this, it becomes clear that there must be another reason not related to the tool's rotation direction on the workpiece. I think that by reversing your usual cutting direction, there's a strong probability that, working in the opposite direction of the usual, you simply don't place the shear point at the same distance from the previous cut. I would tend to believe that you unintentionally shortened the distance. And careful watching of the video shows that you indeed made more cuts backward than forward: 48 against 30, a 60% difference, confirming the theory that you cut at a closer interval. Sometimes, we have a false perception of a fact; it happens to me as much as to you. I am aware that this contradicts the subject of this video, and I apologize for that. This does not diminish the relevance of your RUclips channel or the quality of your content, which I particularly appreciate.

A wonderful explanation Axel and one that I would have to agree with you on. I love hearing other people thoughts and opinions and it definitely clears up why I was able to cut neater. The funny thing is I enjoy cutting backwards especially if it gives me a neater edge. Thankyou so much for taking the time to comment and watch the video, I appreciate the engineer in you. :)

I appreciate this post but I don't think you are a mosaic artist. Your "theory" is a fact not a theory. However, once you try cutting this way, you will see that Peter's way simply works.

@@bevturquoise4651 Well, it's hard to say whether my decades-long pursuit of Roman mosaics qualifies me as an artist. I've been at it for over four decades now, albeit as a hobby. Now, whether you agree with me or not, Peter managed to make 60% more cuts when going backwards. So, it stands to reason that moving in reverse allowed him to execute more incisions along a single revolution

This was great! I can see the difference. As someone who struggles to cut neat edges I can’t wait to try this.

LOL A few people have said the same thing and they didn't realise that the majority of people just cut forward. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

I haven't tried it, but it definitely seems to come out smoother than the one where you cut forward. I wonder why?!

    • @TreasuryRoad

I don't know I have a feeling its more likely me because the only thing that has changed is me in the way I cut. But if it works for me it could work for others. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching. :)

Hmm. I guess it's just me, but I really don't see a difference. I even reminded the video twice and compared the cuttings again. Maybe it feels and looks better to you because you are doing something different. I could be wrong though.

You could be right, I found there was a difference perhaps it wasn't enough though, although other comments are saying the difference is apparent. It will be interesting to see what others say. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)
