As a Native American I can speak on what Mickey was talking about with marginalized ethnicities having lasting health effects from colonizers changing their diet. My ancestors were farmers, and ate what they hunted and gathered, from the climate around them. Then after the great Indian removal westerners introduced simple processed food and food that was grown in an area Natives were not acclimated to. That is why the Native American community has a high rate of morbid obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Also, ask any Native and they will tell you the WORST thing westerners introduced to us is alcohol. Alcoholism is a big problem in the community. And eating less westernized food, even what is deemed health food, doesn’t correct the generational damage to our genetic makeup. I actually hope Paul reads this comment and researches it because this has happened to many minorities and immigrants here in the U.S.

Hi, just wanted to say that the idea that we evolved to eat differently is largely a myth. There are some small differences found in different ethnicities, but, by and large, there are none. The processed food diet makes nearly everyone sick. Eating lean meats (like deer and buffalo/bison) and vegetables is good for nearly everyone. Humans evolved to be able to survive on almost any kind of diet.
@@maraphernalia I’m not talking about “evolving” I’m talking about an unwanted diet that destroyed my ancestors health was passed on to future generations. Why is diabetes and other health conditions genetic? It starts somewhere and the ability to hunt deer and bison was stripped away and you saying processed foods makes people sick…well that proves my point. If you are genetically prone to certain health conditions due to genetics, it’s incredibly hard to prevent them even with eating balanced meals or cutting calories and moving more.
I absolutely agree. My kids are mixed Hispanic. And their culture has the most amazing food. But they definitely have a a propensity of pushing their delicious food on people. It's how some show love is by feeding you. And the way they cook their food is not always the healthiest. Paul has no understanding of genetics or different body builds. Or how different cultures cook and show love. He is sooo sheltered. And ignorant. But he just. Keeps.talking.......just stop speaking paul. Not everyone is tall and thin. With no outside health issues causing weight. I take 3 meds that cause weight gain. I have hormonal issues. I work and have 2 kids. I'm a single mom. I'm in an extremely tough undergrad program. I have zero time to starve myself because I don't make my income from spreading hate and vitriol. I'm actively working to help people as a career. So paul. Just stop already.

The kids I see fighting for social justice that are woke are more socialized and seem to have much more meaningful lives. They understand the issues and can speak to them. Hi! Your video was randomly on my recommended. I am close friends with Mickey irl and this was such a good summary of everything. I don’t want to speak for Mickey but I do just want to confirm that my impression from her is that she really does just want to help those who have been affected by fundamentalism and help those who may be in the deconstruction process feel more valid and accepted. She’s one of the funnest and most interesting, but also kind person I’ve ever met!

It always cracks me up when people use “woke” like a curse word. Like they expect people to be like kids on the playground and go “you take that back!” When in reality they’re more likely to go “…and?”
Well, we were taught specifically to do exactly that so, I'm absolutely not surprised. I've seen it and I've done it. Self awareness is something they take from you and so is thinking for yourself. Lean not on your own understanding and all that, ya know, like that one verse says.
So as a fellow licensed therapist it makes me a little mad to hear Paul was downplaying Mickey's credentials like that. So the requirements vary by state and type of license, but in general you need a *MINIMUM* of a Masters degree and after you get your Masters you have to work a few *thousand* hours under someone else's supervision, meet with that supervisor regularly, and pass a certification exam that costs hundreds of dollars. It takes about two to five years post Masters, so that's after six or seven years of higher education. (Some states require a 48-credit degree and some require a 60-credit degree.) In Mickey's case, since she is a social worker, she likely had to take TWO certification exams. Then after licensure we have to take so many hours of continuing education (and some of them get expensive!) every year or two to keep our licenses current. So, Mickey had to do A LOT to earn those LCSW letters after her name!! She also says in one of her responses how much she had to submit to RUclips to be vetted to get that little banner under her channel to prove she is indeed qualified.
Also we're not a monolith. Mickey and I have very different personalities and communication styles so I wasn't sure how I felt about her when I first found her videos. Therapists can come from any religious/spiritual background (some of us are even Christian ;) ), racial background, ethnicity, body size, etc. I had classmates who went to graduate school straight out of undergrad and classmates who went back later in life after already working in another field. That's why if you don't connect with a therapist when you try them out, it's okay to switch to someone else because you might indeed mesh better with a different person and it doesn't necessarily mean the first person was a bad therapist.

He definitely feels shitty when educated women point out that he has zero education or life experience because he's so sheltered and determined to stay sheltered. I love learning about other cultures. Experiencing them. But he's only happy to white wash the entire world.

My friends and I who have been to therapy have all had therapists we did and didn’t like. One of them had a therapist that would get frustrated with her cause she didn’t really click with him and felt misunderstood in session. But because he was the expert, she wasn’t sure if she was really allowed to feel that way. I think your comment is a really good general reminder to people: it’s ok and totally normal if you don’t get on well with your therapist. It’s ok and totally normal if you need to look for another one that you click with. They’re people just like you, and not everyone sees eye to eye. A good therapist won’t be offended if you need to find another one.

The funny thing is that Paul’s whole “I didn’t realize this was gonna be such a big thing” is ALSO a common manipulation tactic intended to make the viewers and Mickie feel silly for making such a big deal out of his “mistake”. It’s the whole Reverse Victim and Offender thing. So he’s actively gaslighting and manipulating his audience in a video where he’s defending himself against people pointing out that his disrespect to Mickie is a manipulation tactic. Exactly! Obviously it was tongue in cheek of Mickey to put 'Paul' in the trigger warnings, but honestly, his behaviour is kind of triggering to me. The way he keeps deflecting with comments like "isn't this just common sense?? I didn't realise that was such a big deal?? Am I being unreasonable?" makes my blood boil. It's the type of argumentation that's very, very hard to counter without looking like a hysterical drama queen and that's exactly what he's going for. Just continue talking slowly and in a calm tone and the other person getting (rightfully) upset looks like the "crazy" one, no matter the substance of your arguments or how offensive you're really being.

Like what does he expect to happen, one of her patients mentions they’ve been having some issues with restricting food and she immediately says “sorry we have to end this session because I’m a fatty and therefore all of my knowledge and training on this subject are invalid. Go find someone else bye”?

It also shows a gross misunderstanding of eating disorders that is both symptomatic of fatphobia and perpetuates it. I'm a mental health professional who specializes in eating disorders and the majority of people with anorexia are not underweight, much less the majority of people with eating disorders as a whole. I have an entire soapbox I could get on around weight not equaling health, but I'll leave it at that.

@cl5470 Except that, by her own experience, trying to sustain fat loss took a toll on her wellbeing. Health is a lot more than the physical, and mental distress can even turn into physical symptoms or maladies.

Few things about Paul's response. Choosing to use the wrong name as "Missy" really says a lot. That is a name that is often used in a derogatory tone to assert authority over someone. Maybe it was an innocent mistake, maybe it was weaponized incompetence. 🤷🏼♀️
Also, he mentions that she called him a Fundie, but never explains why his beliefs do not closely align with fundamentalist views. Maybe pull out one or two examples of fundamentalism that he disagrees with.

In Mickey’s video, she DOES say how the “casual approach” is working for her. She doesn’t have anxiety, or shame from an eating disorder, and accepts herself. I’ll take that coaching.
Iirc she also talks about how she feels much physically healthier than she did when she was eating restrictively.
Overeating IS disordered eating, though.
@@cl5470 Mickey has a history of eating disorders, which are much more than just about "physical health". Eating disorders have some of the highest risk of death of any mental illness, and the majority of people with EDs die by suicide from the shame, guilt, and emotional suffering caused by the mental illness, not from related physical health complications from the way they eat. She has spoken in several videos about the different "diet" approaches that have triggered relapses for her, including restriction and calorie tracking. I understand that it feels counter intuitive, but some people are safer and healthier in fat bodies, and they shouldn't need to explain their personal health history to strangers to justify their existence as fat people deserving of equal respect and consideration as people.

And they talked about how her husband eats more than her and finishes her leftovers. They also mention that her doctors are always pleased because her blood work and such is always where it's supposed to be.

The fact that Paul doesn’t seem to be able to conceptualize a way in which someone might be able to watch a spicy scene without becoming aroused and lusting after those people is very concerning to me. I’m also so very tired of Paul being like “ya’ll don’t have to watch us. We don’t pretend to be experts.” When they do. Their whole channel started because they were giving advice on how to go about dating when they were only in their first year of marriage. It’s since come out that their first year of marriage was really hard so really, did their “advice” even work out for them? They make a lot of videos giving advice which they don’t have the expertise to give. They position themselves as having some kind of unique knowledge that they’re gifting to other people when they don’t. Mickey said that these things can be harmful to you in the long run if you let it go to far and Paul said nothing about her actual arguments and only said well you’ve taken the casual approach and look at you, you’re fat, so what do you know about being strict.

So much of this is taught in the Fundamentalist churches. It’s all about guilt and self loathing. So much with sex and sexual desires are wrapped up in guilt. I can remember many a vow of at Summer Camps in which we were incentivized and guilted into making virginity vows.
In shock about how much of this ended up being related to fatphobia. Paul really couldn't see past Mickey's appearance and view her as whole human person, and respond to her as such.
I'm glad you made this video! The crossover I never expected. I watch Mickey's content but hadn't kept up with this back and forth, and I'm glad I saw it through this lens - with your reactions to Paul's behavior softening the blows.

@@brackencloudAnd Mickey literally has her own past issues with EDS, so she can also talk from her own experience and not just empiric knowledge which can also be an important angle for people who have their own issues. It's empowering to hear someone else talk about their past issues and how they overcome them.
Many thin people have horribly unhealthy relationship to food. And many fat people have a healthy one. It's not a straight correlation even if we all can agree that many fat people do have an unhealthy relationship to food. But then again, is it their own fault? Vast majority of time it is not. It's disorders, trauma and mental health that affect it the most. The amount of people who eat a shit ton too much knowing that it's unhealthy for them, just for the fun of it and do not care about the possible consequences, is minimal.

I kinda said this before, but Paul clearly has a bit of an ego problem. I'm more embarrassed for him than I ever am angry at him for sharing his opinions. Like sir, if you think being fat is bad and you comment on her weight at all for any reason, you're doing it to be mean. That's pretty straight forward to me.
Edit: Also the fact that to him and to his audience calling her woke (something Mickey probably wouldn't deny) automatically makes what she says dismissible is very telling. He doesn't express why that would be a bad thing. It's just a given to him.

He definately does, and it becomes so clear when he talks about why he compared crack to food and sex. Like it’s just such an obviously bad take, but he can’t just admit that. I don’t think it would be that hard to say “yeah, we probably shouldn’t be comparing food to crack, that’s a weird and unhealthy way to look at it” but he just can’t do it. So now he’s trying to justify this weird comparison and bragging about how humble he is in the same video. It’s kinda funny, but mostly sad.

Imagine boasting that you only take references of human society and psychology from ancient stories and acting like you really did something.
The problem with how he talked about her being fat is that it was obvious that for him fat=bad. It’s not just a fact or a descriptive word. As you and Mickey pointed out, this negative association with being fat harms everyone, regardless of their size. Also, as a fat person, I can tell you that we know all about how diets work and can speak on it very well. And, as a therapist, Mickey is well versed on how fatphobia affects the brain and body negatively. Paul and Morgan are problematic in so so many ways.
the way he says "how is my criticising her for being fat bad when she calls herself fat", like he's so convinced it's terrible that he can't understand how her using the word as a neutral descriptor isn't equivilent to him saying her opinion doesn't matter because paul doesn't find her attractive!

I don’t always agree with Mickey’s takes on things, but I feel like Paul kind of proved her points with his last response. They even addressed that you can’t just say “I read the Bible so there” because it’s been so debated for millennia. He’s so undeservedly confident in his assertions and really didn’t have a solid defense for anything. I guess I didn’t expect anything differently from him but when his entire rebuttal was to “defend his faith and speak in love” it really lacked both.

Seeing someone use weight shaming isn’t going to make me feel comfortable going to a Church. So he’s not doing a great job at defending the religion. I'm autistic, so I don't always understand rhetorical questions, but I think I've got a pretty good grasp on this one. And I don't think it was meant to be helpful. It was more like, "I know what your relationship to food is just by looking at you, and you really don't have much good to say about the subject."

This is hilarious to me because Paul is also not very masculine. He’s a former hairdresser who regularly wears a colorful Maid Marian shirt (I guess he’s a big Disney kid?)

As a dietitian doing my PhD, Certified Personal Trainer with 8 years of training in nutrition, health and fitness under my belt, I can tell you that ONE year of training or experience in health and fitness is NOT enough to talk about nutrition as if you are an expert. I don't usually comment on videos but I'm quite passionate about this.
In fact, Micky was not giving nutrition advice but using it as a metaphor for eating disorders, disordered eating and mental health, something she not only has lived experience in but actual qualifications that Paul doesn't. It's not ironic that she is coaching us about food (which she isn't, she is giving a metaphor), she is talking from years of education and within her scope or practice.
I am a Christian, and all of our commandments in the Bible can be summarised as: Love the Lord with all your heart and love others as yourself.
Paul diverged from his original points by talking about weight and nutrition, without addressing the biggest problem: He was not acting according to our biggest beliefs - acting in love towards others. He does not consider her feelings or his audience's, instead he dismisses it by saying they should "just chill". Even if he doesn't agree with her world view or view on health, a loving response would be to put her feelings first and keep to the original point of the debate.
I believe that Paul truly believes that he is defending the faith and leading people to God, but out of love - we as Christians should be showing more compassion. This type of responses do nothing to lead people to God because it doesn't look any different than that "of the world", using their catchphrase.
Paul doesn’t give me the impression he can skillfully string together main points without going on a defensive tangent.
There is just so much to unpack here, but the biggest thing I just cannot get part is Paul’s insistence on prolonging the conversation about Mickey’s body. Besides the obvious misogyny, it simply cheapens his argument. Paul had a great opportunity to expand on Mickey’s point about Paul and Morgan not having the experience or credentials to talk about their faith - which I think would have been a much more insightful and substantive discussion. Instead, he’s so vapid and condescending, bringing up a topic he knows will cause controversy but is too egotistical to see it as a bad thing.

it's also so telling that paul really thinks anyone can be skinny. like i, personally, am a person who could be skinnier if i wanted but my partner is medically skinny. he has a biological problem with his body where he doesn't get all the nutrition from his food so he is always on the verge of malnutrition. i know women with pcos who simply can't be skinny because their chronic condition prevents it. people who take prednisone often gain weight and can't lose it because the medication prevents it. not everyone can be skinny! also really love that he cut that bit where he repeatedly called her fat together and thought it... exonerated him? except it just made it look worse?

I’m a therapist/clinical social worker (like Mickey) and a Christian, and it turns out, it’s important for me that my clients know they are safe with me. That’s why we have things like Trans Lives Matter or BLM in our office - so that clients know we stand with marginalized communities. Sure, it could be considered “woke”, but when you learn about the history of these communities, the oppression, and the ongoing trauma, why wouldn’t a therapist want to align themselves with their clients and say “I see you, and you’re safe here”? I also believe that’s what Jesus taught.

Yeah, this. Like, it is wild to me that open mindedness and acceptance are somehow seen as a bad thing by Paul (and others. He just expresses incredulity that a therapist would be that).
Also, I got my adhd diagnosis this year, at age 37, and it's been such a relief knowing that I'm not lazy, and careless, and uncaring, that feeling that paralysis isn't a moral failure. So yay! 😁
@@PygmyGoat3 I just wanted to add some extra information, a lot of non-binary people are addressed as their AGAB, even if they are totally cool with that, it can help a lot to acknowledge that that's not their gender. It also helps to normalise using different pronouns for people in general, instead of just the AGAB ones. So if someone uses more than one, or even any, pronouns, it is very common for most people to only use the pronouns that align with their AGAB, which kind of ignores the other possible pronouns, you know?
So it's not so much that she/her is inaccurate in Mickey's case, it's that very often that's the only pronouns people use, which kind of ignores the rest of the pronouns they use.
I hope I explained this well, I'm not sure I did, so if it's unclear please let me know. ☺
i have so much i could say about Paul's comments. on so many levels, this is crossing new lines into targeted cruelty.
for now, I'll say this - there is a big difference in claiming 'fat' for yourself as an act of self-liberation and someone else calling you 'fat' or 'heavy' or whatever else as a derogatory descriptor intended to undermine who you are, what your expertise is, and/or your ability to know anything about health and wellness.
and Paul knows that, or else he wouldn't have said 'can i not say that?' and 'you might hate me for saying this, BUT...' he knew what he was doing and wants us to believe otherwise, and i simply refuse to accept his manipulation as naiveté.
The “am I wrong?” Thing he said over and over shows this is how he argues with people. He frustrates them to no end and wraps it up with that “am I wrong” and people say no just to shut him up or they are so manipulated by his tactics they say “no” out of insecurity or shame. It’s a form of bullying. It was telling he kept saying it to Morgan expecting her to agree with him, which shows this is how he handles their arguments.

From everything that Mickey has said about her relationship with food, it sounds like she actually has quite a bit of experience in how to have a health relationship with food and stay physically healthy. Add someone who works in the medical field, I can wholeheartedly say that the MOST unhealthy thing you can do is go on crash diets that don't work, trying to lose weight, and then gain it back.
It's FAR healthier to be overweight, but maintain a CONSISTENT weight than it is to be thin but then gain weight, then lose it then gain it.
The entire diet industry is toxic and it wreaks havoc on the body for a person's weight to yo yo like that.
You can be fat your whole life and still maintain healthy lipid, triglyceride, cholesterol levels, all of that. Because fat IS NOT inherently unhealthy.
So the fact is, Paul is just wrong.
And beyond that, poor mental health is WAY worse for a person than being fat. Depression, anxiety, high stress levels, all of that will shave years of a person's life span. And that's not even touching mental health conditions like eating disorders (which are some of the most deadly mental health disorders).

As a fat person who developed an eating disorder in the process of trying and failing to lose weight for years, all I hear when people tell me to lose weight is them telling me to risk seriously harming myself so I can appear more aesthetically pleasing and superficially healthy for the sake of those around me.

Everyone deserves to love the body they're in, to feel comfortable in that body and be at peace with it. And as long as you're body SERVES you, allows you to go to work, to spend time with your family or loved ones, and do the things you want to do, then it's a perfect body. And we should all honor our bodies and the things that our bodies show us to do, no matter what size they are.
Side note: I freaking love Mickey. And I feel like their clients are so lucky to have mickey as their therapist, coz you know mickey is actually helping those people find real self acceptance and self love

As a person who went to Christian college and has a degree in church and ministry leadership, Paul couldn’t make in a lot of ministry classes or Bible classes because exegeses and being encouraged to understand things in the culture it was written for would end in him arguing with the professors. This was SO COMMON with white dudes who grew up in church, especially ones who had parents who helped them pay for college.
Also, porn addiction isn’t a thing. It just isn’t. If you’re watching p-rn to a point where it’s negatively impacting your life it is an indicator of a different issue. And if you want to reduce a behavior not because it’s an addiction but bc you want something different in your life it’s fine but it’s not an addiction.
How he talks about p-rn (and how MOST fundamental evangelicals talk about p-rn) is basically the same as Jodi Hildebrand begins talking about p-rn. It’s not a straight line but it is a red flag.
This is true. We should not be telling people who have a normal interest in sex, or even a fixation, that they have an addiction. It is so unnecessarily stigmatizing and shameful, and it literally isn’t true. Isn’t Christianity like supposed to set people free from shame? There is a way to work on unhealthy behaviors like a hyper fixation with sex without giving them misinformation or questioning if they are even really a Christian. It just requires an education on the subject, which both of these people lack. I just wish they’d either stick with telling their own stories not prescriptively or make their channel just straight political. At the moment telling people what they have to think and do to be a good Christian with no education and a very clear political lens through which they are reading the bible, it’s a perfect storm for terrible advice.
To be fair, there are two classes of addiction: physical and psychological.
Physical addictions occur with substances that cause physiological dependence (e.g., alcohol, meth, opioids, etc.). They impact people pretty universally as they produce a cellular, metabolic response that we have no control over.
Psychological additions are compulsive, uncontrollable behaviors that negatively impact a person's life. Examples of this typically include activities that produce high dopamine responses, like gambling, shopping, risky behavior, porn, etc. But, really anything can become a behavioral addiction so long as it produces a dopamine response for that person (e.g., a specific video game, using social media, disordered eating, obsessive exercise, etc.). They are not universal as they don't trigger a biological response per se, but the key here is that there is no predictable pattern and what may not become an addictive behavior for most people, could develop into a behavioral addiction for one person. Most people can partake in viewing porn without issue, but it is also not uncommon for certain people to develop a psychological dependency/compulsion.

@@Sleipnirseight Ok, so I want to respond to this, and this is not meant to invalidate your point, because the point you are making is a good one. I just want to clarify some stuff (I've got a degree in this stuff and this is what i learned in school/research). There is a lot of discussion in the psychological community about whether non chemical addictions are "addictions".
"behavior addictions" As you call them do not have the same biological stuff happening, and so a lot of professionals do not like to use the term addiction. The way that a hyperfixation or a really strong behavioral pattern is treated is going to be super different from how a chemical addiction is treated, so in my opinion we should not be labelling them the same thing. If you look up behavior addiction, a lot of what you see is for profit treatment programs that have very little oversight using the term, which seems pretty insidious.
What may be called a "sex addiction" is most likely a maladaptive coping mechanism or someone who has a compulsive behavior disorder, not an actual chemical addiction. And a lot of christians throw these terms around and act as though "sex addiction" = some kind of chemical addiction, and that is super misleading and stigmatizes normal healthy behaviors as well.
These two types of disordered behaviors may appear functionally the same, but there are some important differences in my opinion. There are some professionals who are comfortable labelling things "sex addictions" or "internet addictions" etc, but in my experience it's a minority.
Anyway your point still stands, I personally never use the term "addiction" unless I am speaking about a chemical addiction, because it prevents a lot of miscommunication.
@@Sleipnirseight The point I'm making is that there is no DSM or any other official diagnosis for psychological addiction. The only behavioral addiction that qualifies is gambling addiction. Other than that, people may use the term to explain their experiences, but it's not like a diagnosable thing. At least it won't be diagnosed in the same way, it will be diagnosed as a compulsive behavior or something else specific. And sure you could make the argument that there is some biological stuff going on, but it isn't the same as chemical addiction and isn't treated in the same way. So while the use of this type of category may be helpful in some scenarios, I would caution people against using terms like this as though they are specific psychological or biological terms, because they aren't. Saying that we can develop addictions to anything is part of the problem in my opinion, because when we have this very unspecific language and can apply it to any maladaptive compulsive behavior, it can lead to people thinking they have chemical addictions and need to be treated that way, which is harmful. There is no such thing as a diagnosable sex addiction, or food addiction, or anything like that, these are terms we use to describe the experience of having unhealthy compulsive behaviors around these things. Situations like the Jodi Hildebrandt thing that is happening right now are cautionary tales of why we need to be careful not to conflate medical terms with informal language. I'm not saying never use this type of language, I'm just throwing out a caution here.

My win for the week is that we got to take my dog to the vet (we don’t have a lot of money, but he really hasn’t been feeling well) and it thankfully it’s nothing life threatening. He has a flea allergy and arthritis. So we’re getting him some supplements and looking into flea treatments. So hopefully he’ll be feeling better soon. ❤️

Used to work at a vet, prices are indeed soaring as vet practices are getting snapped up by corporations and squeezing both the staff and the clients for more and more money.
The only suggestion I can offer is apply for Care Credit, it allows you to pay the same bill over like 6 months. Better to do it in advance and have it onboard before you’re in a more urgent situation.

Every word out of Paul's mouth is passive aggressive and insincere. His voice makes me shiver. What a nightmare it must be to live with a guy that weaselly and manipulative.
The thought process behind Paul and Morgan's video made me feel so subconscious about wearing a swimsuit. I grew up in churches that were very conservative. Definitely gave me a lot of anxiety that I am finally starting to work through. I really wish churches and Christian channels would go back to basics and focus on the Gospel of Jesus.
He brings up Mickey's sex life at the tail end when he says he's going to pray for her. That made me ready to flip the table. I get why Jesus went and braided a whip all afternoon to pick a fight in the temple.
Found it very interesting that he explained why he was responding to their video because "if you feel like doing something and it's not *bad*, that might be a sign that you should do it" or whatever....that's sounding dangerously close to what those awful "woke" people might say about a variety of situations, Paul.... 🤔
This is exactly what I was thinking... doesn't he espouse that just because you like something and it makes you feel good that doesn't mean you should do it if it's a sin... he's so hypocritical.

Porn addiction and sex addiction do not exist in the same sense as true addiction does. The appropriate ways to define them are compulsive use of porn, out of control sexual behavior (for the more severe cases), difficulty with management of porn use, etc. Porn and sex addiction are not listed in DSM V (the diagnostic mental health manual). There is a big push now by the so called "porn addiction therapy" groups to add it to the next edition of the DSM, but it's important to understand that the techniques that these therapists use (sadly they are often legitimate mental health therapists) have not been evaluated and studied for efficacy, and most importantly, rely heavily on sexual shame to control a person's behavior. Moreover, these therapists (with rare exceptions) have no education in human sexuality and there is no plan to create sexual wellness for a person. You can't just "stop" and cut off your sexual self the way you would with your alcohol use, for example. You can actually see how well this approach works in the recent Frankie family scandal and what the Mormon "church" teaches about "porn and sex addiction". Paul is so cavalier with this term because in these fundamentalist religious spaces, the amount of sexual shame is overwhelming and any sexual behavior that's not strictly prescribed is punished most severely. Also, saying you are an addict gives you an "out" - it's not you, it's your addiction (the monster Harvey Weinstein attempted the "I'm a sex addict defence", thankfully unsuccessfully). Ironically, when actual sexual misconduct happens, these communities do everything they can to cover it up. It's incredibly difficult to learn boundaries and appropriate behavior when it comes to sexuality and relationships in such a messed-up environment.

What makes Paul's response so terrible is that he never actually makes any arguments. It all feels like passive-aggressive sneering dressed up as "discussion." The two biggest examples are in two of his favorite words: "woke" and "ironic." He never says what he means by woke, or why he objects to it. For him it's enough simply to apply the label. That alone is sufficient to dismiss anything. Then he gets going with "ironic" when talking about Mickey being fat while discussing food. What's ironic about it? He never says. And even if it was ironic, so what? What difference does it make? How does it affect the truth of what she says? But Paul thinks "ironic" is a slam-dunk argument.
In addition: Paul blatantly misuses the parable of the prodigal son. The gospel does not present the story as a way of attacking "loose women" or anyone else we might think has gone astray. It's meant to be the word of god spoken to the heart of every individual, calling us to repent. By weaponizing it against Mickey, Paul shows that he has never really heard its message. This isn't just wrong; it's blasphemous.

Yes, Mickey has spoken about her EDs and has also said that her body and her quality of life are both at their best at her current weight. It has always driven me crazy when people correlate weight with my relationship with God. I can be a Christian and wear a size 24!!!

Loving that after being called out Paul made an effort to get Mickey's name correct (even if the way that he was doing it was giving the vibe that he thought it was a big deal about nothing), he didn't make any effort to learn Aaron's name though - just referred to him as Mickey's husband (when he wasn't saying I am assuming that he is her husband). Impressed that he hasn't paid attention to the fact that they are poly, I am sure that that would be content for him otherwise (unless that is what he was alluding to when he vague talking).
Nah, I think the poly aspect has gone way over his head. It’s clear he doesn’t truly listen to them, or other people, unless they are talking about him or in the middle of saying a point he wants to combat.
My win for the week is my daughter substitute taught at the school she works at as a para-professional. She was SO HAPPY and such a good day! I hope this gives her the nudge to pursue getting an actual teacher's job. She graduated with an education degree in December.
