  • This video will show you how to change the battery on the Nest Protect Gen 1 smoke detector. The gen 1 smoke detector takes three AA lithium batteries. After you have removed the Nest Protect smoke detector from the mounting base and removed the wire harness you need to remove four phillips screws. Then you can access the battery compartment on the Nest protect Generation 1 smoke detector.

Great video, mine started at 6 am. I received an email advising me to replace the Nest Protect with a new one. Mine is only 5-6 years old and these are supposed to be replaced every 10 years. No mention that all I had to do is replace the batteries!

Thank you that was helpful. I got so far as to unscrew the screws on my own but I could not figure out how to get to the battery portion before I looked at your video.

I saw another video that stated I needed to shut off the power of the home before attempting to change battery. Is that true? Can I not just pull the whole unit down, the way you did in the video?

Does it keeps its settings or do i need to reconnect it to my WiFi network and the other nest protects in my house? I have the battery versions with 6batteries inside.

Good Question! It will keep its settings once the batteries are removed and reinstalled.

Yes, you can do the exact same thing to clean the battery version as well. Thank you for watching and hopefully you won’t have any more false alarms.

Can it use a 4.5V adapter?
